12 Times Hyenas Messed With The Wrong Animals

Hyenas have a knack for not minding their own business. Whether they’re welcome or not is unimportant to them. They just like crashing parties. Sometimes, however, they crash the wrong parties, and they get a piece of their own medicine. If you want to see hyenas in compromising circumstances, you’re at the right place as we countdown 12 times hyenas messed with the wrong animals.

Lion
It turns out that the violent conflict between hyenas and lions over carrion stretches back to 37,000 years ago. The animosity between lions and spotted hyenas goes deep, and it is one of nature's most well-known rivalries and probably the most ferocious rivalry in the African Savannah, with both species having an incomprehensible loathing for one other. One thing Hyenas don’t want to do is crash a party full of male lions and that’s exactly what they do in this video, and you can see what happens as this male lion is in pursuit of this hyena with another lioness running by his side. It doesn’t look good for the scavenger. The female lays one paw on the hyena, but it’s not enough.
However, the big male catches up to the hyena and it is game over in seconds for the lion’s fiercest enemy. Whether they are young or old, lions will kill every hyena insight. That’s how much they hate them, so when hyenas go around looking for trouble, they better make sure their clan is high in numbers, and not isolated where lions can strike at any time. These two massive lions find a small hyena that has been left behind by the clan. The lions are just walking right behind the hyena without striking it, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a matter of time before they do. The hyena tries to escape with its tail between its legs, but that isn’t going to change the lion’s mind. I guess the lions are just toying with the hyena because it is quite young. When they’re standing there, they almost look like they’re all friends.
This hyena is praying for the lions to forget about it, but it doesn’t look like they will. However, the rest of the clan approaches, so this could change the odds for the lone hyena. Believe it or not, the hyena manages to get back to the clan and the lions don’t even bother chasing it. That’s what I call the luckiest hyena in the world. During this night footage, this male lion attacks the matriarch of the clan and mangles it badly. The matriarch tries its best to defend itself, but the male lion is too powerful. The matriarch’s back is broken, and it won’t survive this ordeal with a broken back. The lion leaves the matriarch there and chases the other hyenas because, on this night, the lion is not looking for food, it’s looking to kill whatever is in its path.
Wild Dogs
If there's enough food to go around, wild dogs and hyenas can get along fine, but a scarcity of prey can force them both out of their protected areas. The bottom line though is everyone's deadliest enemy is the hyena, and this includes wild dogs. There is a lot of discussions but not much action when wild dogs and hyenas meet. That's because neither of them wants to be the one to make the initial move. The hyenas chatter and giggle, while the wild dogs watch and think. This clip is a bit depressing. This hyena appears to have succumbed to these wild dogs, as it rests on the ground, seemingly unresponsive to the dogs' pinches and bites.
It’s rare to see a hyena in so much trouble unless it is attacked by a male lion, but this hyena is in big trouble and it’s time to bring in a priest to give it its last rites. These events happen daily, so life in the savannah is not all fun and games. These two hyenas are surrounded by a bunch of wild dogs and a small scuffle ensues. Both the dogs and the hyenas voice their opinions. The hyenas crack a joke or two and the dogs serenade them a little. After a little complaining from both sides, the animals disperse into the forest. In this video, about thirty or forty dogs maul this hyena to death. I guess these are hunting dogs that are let loose by their handlers. I don’t understand why people would hunt hyenas, but I guess they do it for a reason, whether it’s money or body parts to sell for money.

Ntwadumela, "he who greets with fire" is the name of the lion that attacked those hyenas in the first parts of this video. He was one of the most well-known lions of his time, known for hunting down hyenas, mainly matriarchs. God help any hyena who messed with his pride. He did this, not for food, but for revenge and sheer dislike. If he targeted a hyena, that hyena was as good as dead. It was never a clean kill either. He purposely crippled them, leaving them to die a slow, painful death. Killed over 30 of them in his lifetime, until a couple of shitty trophy hunters killed him from inside their vehicles. Sad end to a legend.

  • @TheCapedWanderer

    @TheCapedWanderer

I never fully understood how truly important the male lion is to the pride until I saw that video. Lots of hyenas vs. lots of lionesses, and it was basically a draw, with the hyenas emboldened and gaining the upper hand (paw) in the dispute over the lionesses’ kill. Because even though any single lioness could reasonably take any single hyena, the danger of a hyena bite is real and cats don’t take risks like that. Then one male lion shows up with that weight differential and the tide turns on a dime. Hyenas scatter, the lionesses go on the attack, and the king goes straight for the matriarch. Brutal. He breaks her spine like a toy. And it all comes down to the proportional difference in weight between a male and female lion, the male is heavy enough to control a hyena where the lioness has to grapple with it. I have to admit I never really respected male lions until I saw how a pack of like 30 hyenas reacted to a single one entering the scene.

Footage from 0:54 to 1:17 features the lion known as Ntwadumela which means "he who greets with fire". Unfortunately he was shut down by poachers but he was known for not only being ferocious against hyenas but mostly because in comparison to other lions that defend themselves against hyenas or protect their pride or food, Ntwadumela was tracking them and killing them for sport, he knew that killing the hyena matriarch would defeat the rest of the pack directly and was going for it. Don't recall the exact number but I think he had more than 25 hyenas killed during his lifetime. And i'm willing to be corrected by experts but I also think that the lion breaking the back of the hyena is still Ntwadumela.

Ntwadumela killed over 40 hyenas in his lifetime. The back story of this attack is also fascinating, the attack was orchestrated by the matriarch hyena by dividing her clan into three groups of 7, 10, and 6 each after closely observing his & his brother's previous attacks and fighting styles with other hyena clans. That attack itself resulted in around 10 or more hyenas dead at the hands of two brothers.

Lions go for complete obliteration when in absolute power - Mopogos, Sekekama, or any other alliance with significant power. That dynamic is always filled with an element of vendetta, though I don't believe that in the animal kingdom vendetta exists as humans consider it to be (except for documentary narrations to make the stories exciting). It's driven by the will to survive and capture the territories with the most prey and eliminate potential future & current enemies.

It's not all about strength. Cats don't need powerful jaws because of the prominence of their canine teeth. Canine species like hyenas have smaller canine teeth therefore require stronger jaws. Cats can focus that pressure on the tiny points of their longer canines, making them more efficient at killing using less energy.

That male lion attacking the matriarch is from a NatGeo doc called Eternal Enemies: Lions and Hyenas earlier in the doc that pack of hyenas had attacked that male prides females. When he attacked the matriarch he was alone, not with his pride, and after the attack he just left, he wasn't trying to steal their kill, it was pure revenge!

Hyenas possess a facade of confidence, which is entirely opposite that of a lion - especially male lions. Male lions actually are fearless (except fear of lionesses 😂), whereas hyenas have confidence in numbers. They will be more persistent when in larger numbers, and are warded off less easily in this case. Their facade is broken pretty badly when male lions show up. They know that a male lion will very easily and ruthlessly kill a hyena or two to put them in their place. Hyenas know this, and therefore generally avoid male lions. But sometimes their facade carries them a bit too far, and results in a pack member or two becoming a vulture's centerpiece. 😂

Ironically, one of the reasons predators are so hesitant to attack Honeybadgers is because they will go for the testicles/groin as well. You can see this is the 2-v-2 clip where the Hyena instinctively protects its rump while exposing its flank. It obviously cares more about protecting its rear than its vitals; truly gnarly little creatures those Badgers.

"Great video, my favorite was actually the giraffe! I had no idea they could be so agressive and quick. The honey badger and the donkey are runner up lol" Fun facts. When giraffes have conflict with each other, they whip their necks about and hit the other giraffe with their head. This does very little damage, but is assumed to be the method used because kicking each other would result in severe injury for both giraffes. So they choose to posture and use their heads as to avoid life threatening consequences. As mentioned in the video, Donkeys are used as sentinels in North America on property that has problems with incursions from coyotes. There are several reported instances (and videos online) of cougars breaching properties on which donkeys live, and donkeys end up killing the cougars.
