Well that's not exactly true. While it's true you don't have to average double digit assists anymore to be an elite point guard you still have to be able to bring the ball up court, direct the offense, make the right decision, and least be able to playmake a little bit. While it's true every position has changed, there are still certain requirements and skills you have to possess to be at that position. Exam throw the outlet or bring it coast to coast on his own. Elite screen setter. Elite passer. Great rebounder. Elite shot blocker. Similar size to today’s center. Strong enough to guard true bigs but athletic enough to guard out on the perimeter as well. High IQ. Please stop me when these skills don’t translate to today. Good video and one of the things you allude to that often hurts players, coaches unwilling to adapt to the talent. Too often coaches in sports, and throughout all industries in general, just get stuck in their mind this is just how it's suppose to be done because because of "conventional wisdom" and the mindset has often restricted the talent of players. Coaches are not only guilty of it but so are a lot of fans. They've seen it work one way so that's just the way you do it but you get guys like Don Nelson, Mike D'antoni, Steve Kerr, and so many others who decided to dump conventional wisdom and do it their way. It doesn't always lead to championships but it often leads to a lot of success and you see other coaches adapting their old style once they see they're behind the times.

Didnt even mention Pistol Pete. The rest of the video is good and factual. People dont realize that back in the day the rules actually made it hard on players. Thats why players might seem so much more skilled today compared to other generations. Literally every rule change at some point has been made in the words of Adam Silver and Stern to 'open up the game' and boost statistical output. They are legendary good at their work. Their rule changes directly within a couple years completely changes the game every single time.

Great vid. I agree with your conclusion to a degree. Ball handling forwards and wings are probably the direction the league is going. Guys like Luka, Bron, Harden, Simons, etc. But expecting no players like Steph? As long as there are dudes who are that talented, they will make their way to the league. Guys like Dame and Steph won't just disappear unless the rules change again and they just won't be able to get shots up in the same way. Even back then, you pointed out outlier players who developed those kinds of skills when there was no blueprint. Now, there are so many examples players can look to. So if a dude is 6'1" and determined to make it, he has a blueprint for his success at least. He knows the sorts of skills to work on.

Excellent video, once again. There are a few Part 2 video ideas to tac on. • Nikola Jokic, the best passer in the league. THE Point Centre. He "can't jump" yet his hands are 100, whether it is for passing or for scoring. Just like Dirk Novitzki "pioneered" being a great shooting 7 footer as a legit career option, and influenced Kevin Durant, who will Nikola Jokic influence in the future...? • LeBron James, leading the league in assists with a remix of Kareem & Magic, now AD is a Laker. And it stems from having been such a dominant scorer in the past, it really helps draw the D to him. LBJ was always an elite passer, but now he's even better. • Chicago Bulls circa 90s. The point guard was an all rounder in the 1st 3peat, in BJ Armstrong. Paxon shot nicely, but wasn't really an elite passer or scorer. But in the 2nd 3 peat, the PG is Ron Harper, who focused on D. Steve Kerr was very poor at dribbling and distributing, but laser guided from 3 (and foul line). Scottie Pippen was actually the real "Point" for the team. A 6'7" Forward, who wasn't actually super nifty at dribbling or someone who would ISO, yet his pairing with MJ really allowed his good choices and amazing physique to make him a horrible matchup. • Steph Curry, in my opinion, doesn't actually play as a PG. (and neither did Russel Westbrook, imo) For instance, Chris Paul is a PG. But Curry is a Shooting Guard, who happens to have elite handles, and is great at passing. Draymond Green is the Point (centre) for the team. By having Curry run of screens, the D has to focus on his movement (AND Klay's) and focus on the ball handler. It is absolutely horrible to try to stop. • Those are my thoughts, anyway :)
@daishawnlovick84714 жыл бұрын
I'm a 90's baby, but personally as a 6'2 guard I'm well rounded. Defense, post scoring, slashing, mid range and playmaking. I don't care too much for scoring even though I can 7/10 plays. I like being a pound for pound point guard with the simple role of penetrate and pass. My slashing makes my playmaking more effective because it's easier to draw double teams and collapsing the defense, opening up teammates for an easy pass. Its not all about scoring, but playing your role to your teams success. 80's and 90's guards are the most prolific to me and always will be. John Stockton is a prime example of my play style. Just not as good of a passer or floor general. It takes years to develop and hone those skills to perfection
@Pachinko8883 жыл бұрын
Imo it's great that today NBA welcomes non-standard height/weight players as opposed to players being scrutinized for a f****ng 1-2 inch height difference or a different playstyle. Of course, not everything is perfect today but a welcoming hand to change is always good

Zaw33mc 2 what does Clint chapels or draymond do that Bill Russell doesn’t? Supreme athleticism, and world real own leaping ability, great on the fast break. U think Steven Adams and Tyson Chandler can play today but not Bill Russell? Use your brain bud.

I was too young to get the general perception of players when chauncey billups was in the league, and i just gotta say i'm surprised as hell that he was labelled a combo guard. Mans always been one of the first "true point guards" that comes to mind for me when discussing them. What the hell were we thinking back then??? lmao
I think the era of the small guard is gonna be coming to a close now. With a lot of 6’6” plus point guards entering the league I feel like we’ll be seeing the league as a whole become taller at the backcourt while also becoming smaller in the frontcourt.
love youre vids keep it up man!!!!!

Jerry colangelo was head of thecrules committee that made the rules changes in 2005 .. it was a bit of insider trading in how Phoenix became so good!
Low always puts out amazing videos
A part two. Done over a year after part 1😂😂
there are exceptional players who make the league change & add rules or change how the game is played and teams and players try to imitate, and those are very especial players
Glad you’re back LOW
I remember i spent a whole 2 summers training with steve and his brother martin for basketball and soccer... Soccer i ended up becoming my teams best scorer and in basketball my coach kept me on the bench and the one time i played i got subbed out after carrying my team back from a 10 pt deficit
Good video bro.. hard to make this type of video without mentioning Allen The Answer Iverson considering his impact on and off the floor. AI was the first score 1st pg of my generation
Love videos like this. I need my basketball fix and this is like methadone
Nice. I'd argue Cousy was more of a Score First than Pass First PG, but otherwise this is spot on.
Great vid. Only complaint is Iverson deserves mention in this evolution as a score-first pg on a winning team with a trip to the finals that was built around him. This helped pave the way for guys like Curry and Harden.

Please do videos like this for the other 4 positions and coach

At the end of 2021 season, you nay need to expand the segments on Stephen Curry, Kyle Lowry, Kyrie Irving.
I LOVE the recognition LoW gives mark price. Such an underrated player for how different he was for his time. Like Pete Maravich all over again.
I think you should have a new category at the start of 2015 with setphs mvp year. His impact on shooting and spacing is different than like CP3
He knows the sorts of skills to work on.
only thing i wouldve liked to see at the end is how the acceptance of the combo guard/positionless bball has caused a lot of issues for players who hav rough time playing off ball, but maybe that existed longer than just in todays times.... loved the video for sure though
Imo it's great that today NBA welcomes non-standard height/weight players as opposed to players being scrutinized for a f****ng 1-2 inch height difference or a different playstyle. Of course, not everything is perfect today but a welcoming hand to change is always good
That Miami hat and Wu Tang hoodie ❤️👐🔥
