I'm not even remotely bothered by anything Northern Ireland related.. but watching a vice reporter throwing a petrol bomb at a bonfire with the Irish flag on it is very bad taste. You'd think, at the very least, the editor of the video would have had the common sense to remove it

I was born on a Dublin street where the royal drums did beat, And those loving English feet they tramped all over us, And each and every night when me father came home tight He'd invite the neighbors outside with this chorus: Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man, Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra. Come tell us how you slew them poor Arabs two by two, Like the Zulus they had spears and bows and arrows, How you bravely faced each one with your 16-pounder gun, And you frightened them poor natives to their marrow. Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man, Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra. Come let us hear you tell how you slandered great Parnell, When you thought him well and truly persecuted, Where are the sneers and jeers that you bravely let us hear When our heroes of '16 were executed? Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man, Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra. Well the day is coming fast and the time is here at last, When each yeoman will be cut aside before us, And if there be a need, sure me kids would sing, "Godspeed, " With a verse or two of Stephen Behan's chorus: Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man, Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell them how the IRA made you run like hell away From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra.

The troubles is arguably one of the most complex & difficult to understand conflicts of the twentieth century. It's rather telling kids yelling anti catholic slogans & burning flags have little idea what any of it means. Consider most adults, both inside & outside the conflict have little idea where it all came from or what any of it means, it's hardly surprising. It's all little more than hate few have any idea of its origins of being passed from one generation to the next. It's a very troubling sign for the future of the region & all the people who have to live there.

If you want to have an idea of what the atmosphere is like at a loyalist bonfire the best way I could describe it would be a mash up of a KKK cross burning in a Mafia controlled area with all day drinking, an undercurrent of soft drugs, paranoia, intimidation and, provided you agreed with the local mafia don aka UDA or UVF leader, a lot of fun. I used to go to them when I was a kid and the good news is that when you grow up, get educated and meet people from other backgrounds you realize that the whole idea of bonfires is an exercise in navel gazing bullshit for people who have little control in their lives and think that rubbing peoples noses in cherry picked history from 300 years ago is the way to feel important.

A very small percentage of nationalists try to confront the 12th July parades only because they purposely disrupt the ones who don't celebrate it. I don't care about my attitude, the majority of unionists don't know what they're fighting for. They caused this conflict and they're too stubborn to end it, no argument about it.

Am I the only one that's disturbed that the journalist actually participated in a discriminatory act, by throwing the Molotov cocktail at the wooden pile; with Irish flags on top. I'm not trying to be political correct here.

Well said my southern countryman. Dont let crashwarrior fool you into thinking all southern people think like him, hes a coward. Im from the North and i think we both agree that all this nonsense ends with our generation. The more people that come up from the 26 ccounties to populate the 6 counties, the better.

You've obviously never heard of participant observation. His participation wasn't really a big deal, but it allowed him to build rapport with the people he was researching and gather more valid data about their hatred to show to a wider audience. He made a short term sacrifice for the greater good, otherwise you'd never have seen this film.

This reporter let a bunch of kids pressure him into taking part in a sectarian hate rally. What a total stooge. Would vice considering sending someone to a klan rally to light the cross? That’s a serious question vice cause I know theres people who would love for vice to come promote and condone their activity too.

At 5:20 I don't understand why they blurred that guy's face. I mean it's clear that it's the same Rab in the beginning of this clip. He doesn't really have the most generic build and he's wearing the same clothes. And you see him tossing Molotov cocktails a few mins after they blur him. Seems pointless.
