Northern Ireland: Emergency talks take place after ‘worst rioting in recent years’
Emergency talks have been taking place in Northern Ireland, after yet another night of violence on a scale which police said they had not seen for decades. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis met leaders of the power-sharing executive to discuss the unrest, whilst the Stormont Assembly came together to condemn the violence and to support the rule of law.
In last night's clashes, a bus was set on fire and eight police officers were injured as they came under attack.

The truth of the matter is Ulster Unionism has always been on the wrong side of history. They accept Democracy when it suits them and threaten violence if the outcome of that democratic result doesn't go their way. When the majority on the island of Ireland vowed for home rule, the Ulster-Unionists resisted an Irish parliament to be run by the Irish; even though Ireland was still in the UK. The Ulster-Unionists bit off more then they could chew and a good chunk of Ireland (26 counties) left the kingdom because the Irish who also identified themselves as British wouldn't meet the Irish Republicans half way. Partition happened because the UVF threatened a civil war within the UK. The reason why they were threatening violence was because in 1918, Ireland had a national vote called “the Irish general election”. The majority of the Irish people voted for independence. The minority in the North of Ireland who voted to remain in the UK got their wish. The Irish people got cheated out of their Democracy and the island was partitioned. The 26 Counties became what was known as the “irish free state” (later to be called the “Republic of Ireland” in 1949) and the North of Ireland had to rejoin the UK as a new entity known as “Northern Ireland” in 1922. The founding fathers of Ireland (the first and original IRA) had no choice but to accept the 26 county Irish free state treaty. Either they accepted it or the British empire would've blown Ireland off the map. British Gunship Diplomacy from their empire forced Ireland to surrender. Fast forward to today and you're seeing a repeat of history going in reverse. You're essentially witnessing karma in action. In 2016 the UK had a national vote on the UK leaving the EU: i.e *Brexit* The majority of the British people voted for independence The minority in Northern Ireland who voted to remain in the EU got their wish. The British people got cheated out of their Democracy and the Union has become partitioned. The British government voted for the sea border because they had no choice. Either accept the sea border (known as the Irish protocol) or risk diplomatic action from both the EU and USA. Ireland has the backing from an Irish lobby in Congress (from both the Democrats and Republican parties) and an Irish-American president. That's without 26 countries in the EU that's also backing up Ireland as well. The UK had no choice but to surrender Northern Ireland to the EU. It's also worth mentioning that the DUP voted for this protocol that has the UK partitioned. They're shifting the blame, deflecting responsibility and meeting up with sectarian loyalist paramilitaries - DURING A LOCKDOWN - and is stoking up all this tension. They're an absolute cancer to Northern Ireland.

Bill Clinton was very important to the peace process and the Good Friday Agreement, there are people in NI that don't want peace, the DUP opposed the Good Friday agreement, they voted for Brexit because they thought a border would be put back in Ireland, it has backfired and now that have a border down the Irish sea and a possibility of a United Ireland referendum. They thought Brexit would put partition back in Ireland, instead, they have the protocol and border down the Irish sea separating them from the UK, how they fix that is anyone guess, because of Brexit, there has to be a border, the border has to be either on the island of Ireland on in the sea, they were told this during the Brexit campaign they would not listen. The bottom line is this, they only place for the border that doesn't break the GFA so it has to be in the Irish sea unless the UK stay in the customs union, which was what Theresa May wanted, but the DUP didn't. The majority of people in NI opposed Brexit , so this mess firmly lies in the hands of the DUP .

@@syd5380 You are misinformed, the Americans were invited in as an intermediary, by both the UK government and the Irish government to help broker a peace plan, George Mitchell did a great job bringing about peace in N.I, there is a faction of extreme Unionism in northern oreland that don't want peace, they are looking for a way to break the Good Friday agreement, and they will miscalculate this time, as well as they, did with Brexit. What will happen is that if they continue to be difficult, Boris Johnson, with the Irish government will call a referendum on A United Ireland . Here is very short article about it. Why has violence flared again on the streets of Northern Ireland? The street disorder that has flared in various parts of Northern Ireland for more than a week can be attributed to a multitude of factors. At its heart is loyalist anger at post-Brexit trading arrangements that have created economic barriers between the region and the rest of the UK. For loyalism, Brexit's Northern Ireland Protocol has undermined their place in the Union. But it took an event unrelated to the Irish Sea border furore to set a match to resentment that has been simmering since the consequences of exiting the EU became a reality at the start of January. The announcement by prosecutors last week that no action would be taken against 24 Sinn Fein politicians, including deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill, for attending a huge republican funeral during the pandemic sparked outrage among some loyalists. In several loyalist working class areas, many still in the grip of the malign influence of paramilitary gangs, sporadic rioting has since flared. Belfast, Londonderry, Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus and Ballymena have all witnessed scenes of violence that many hoped had been consigned to the history books. There have also been bouts of disorder within republican areas in recent days. In the most stark, youths on both sides of a west Belfast peace line pelted petrol bombs and other missiles at each other through Wednesday night. For loyalists, the funeral of former IRA leader Bobby Storey last June hardened a long-standing perception held by many within their community that the institutions of the state afford preferential treatment to republicans. For apparent confirmation, they pointed to police engagement with the Sinn Fein funeral organisers prior to an event that saw around 2,000 people take to the streets of west Belfast when tight limits on public gatherings were in place. This interaction with the planners was one reason why senior prosecutors concluded any prosecution of Ms O'Neill and her colleagues was doomed to fail - the other being the 'incoherent' nature of Stormont's Covid-19 regulations at the time. Criticism of the PSNI approach was not confined to hard-line elements within loyalism and all the main unionist parties subsequently called for chief constable Simon Byrne to resign, claiming he has lost the confidence of their community. DUP First Minister Arlene Foster has said she will no longer engage with Mr Byrne. Her lack of communication with the region's police chief during a time of escalating street violence, and coming only weeks after she met with representatives of loyalist paramilitaries to discuss the Brexit fall out, has drawn sharp criticism from political rivals. Non-unionist parties have accused Mrs Foster and other unionist political leaders of stoking up tensions, not only in relation to the Storey funeral but also in respect of the Irish Sea border. The DUP leader and other prominent voices within unionism and loyalism insist they are only reflecting genuinely held concerns they say must be addressed - specifically by way of Mr Byrne's resignation and the binning of the Protocol. Amid the current unionist clamour for Mr Byrne's head, and claims of 'two tier' policing, it is worth noting that two months ago the PSNI chief constable was facing similar claims of discriminatory behaviour from within nationalism. Those were prompted by a controversial police operation in Belfast that saw a man badly injured in a loyalist gun massacre during the Troubles arrested at the scene of a commemoration event after officers intervened to probe suspected Covid regulation breaches. Following that incident at the site of the 1992 Ormeau Road betting shop murders, Ms O'Neill claimed there was a 'crisis in confidence' in the PSNI among nationalists, albeit she stopped short of calling for Mr Byrne to quit. The Protocol and funeral controversy have not created the loyalist perception that the system is weighed against them, but have built upon a narrative articulated by an increasing number within loyalism that the peace process - particularly the Good Friday accord of 1998 - has handed them a raw deal. They cite underinvestment and deprivation in loyalist working class areas as further proof that they have missed out on the gains of peace. Nationalists and republicans reject this premise, insisting their communities have experienced just has many problems with poverty and unemployment since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement. Paramilitary elements are undoubtedly involved in much of the disorder witnessed across the region in recent days - either directly or by orchestrating young people to riot on their behalf. However, in Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus an added factor is at play. In those areas, the PSNI believes paramilitary involvement is less motivated by Brexit or the Storey funeral and more to do with a rogue faction - the South East Antrim UDA - reacting to recent police operations targeting its criminal empire.

There's so much it's hard to know even how to begin. Generally you have on one side British protestants who wish to remain in the union with GB and who mainly (but not all) supported brexit and have mostly traditional Western Conservative views. On the other side is Irish Catholics who want a United Ireland and who are mostly pro EU and these days tend to have very left wing and even Marxist views. Obviously not every protestant and Catholic will fall under these descriptions but by and large that's how it is.
