Free Derry: The IRA Drug War

Subscribe to VICE News here: bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News
In February 2014, letter bombs were sent to nine British Military recruitment offices over the course of three days. Londonderry postmarks, a coded message sent to a Northern Irish newspaper, and security forces at Downing Street all pointed to the New IRA as the main suspects.
Last Summer, VICE News visited Derry and heard from Gary Donnelly - the most prominent dissident republican in Londonderry, accused of leading operations for the Real IRA - that these attacks on Britain were to be expected as part of "strategic attacks on high profile targets," as "it's England that's occupying Ireland."
In 'Free Derry: The IRA Drug War', VICE News investigate how, sixteen years after the Good Friday peace agreement and on the eve of the first major loyalist parade through the city in four years, dissident republican activity in Derry is increasing thanks to the merger of the Real IRA with anti-drugs vigilantes.
VICE News reporter Alex Miller speaks to members of the Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD), who formed the coalition with the Real IRA, and meets supporters as young as thirteen who are being armed with petrol bombs to combat criminal gangs and intervening police.
For the first time, Paul Stewart, a close friend of slain Dublin Real IRA leader Alan Ryan, speaks on camera about witnessing the murder, as well as sharing insights on Ryan's war against drug dealers.
Miller also interviews the mother of Andrew Smith, a man who she says was murdered by the Real IRA despite no affiliation with drugs related crime, before hearing from a Derry ex-drug dealer who now claims that, if the New IRA didn't fight drugs, "this town would be filled with ecstasy and rat poison and kids would be dying."
VICE encounter a city where kneecappings and shootings are rife, walls are branded with anti-UK slogans, and where a policeman can scarcely walk down the street - according to Gary Donnelly - "without being killed".
In "Free Derry: The IRA Drug War", VICE unmask the farcical veneer of the UK's 'City of Culture' 2013.

I don't know if this is still the way it was. I visited Ireland in 1990 and it was told to me that drug dealers are warned and if that does not help for them to find a new occupation, action is taken. But I went in 2000, young people on the sidewalks of Dublin were constantly asking me for a handout. I believe many of them were drug addicts. I gave one young woman who asked me 5 euros because I felt sorry for her. She then insinuated she was open for some action. I gave another 5 euros out of disgust and pity and booked.

Drug addiction is a problem everywhere I’m sure there are people within the republican movement who believe and would give their lives for their communities and people. It’s complicated and I don’t judge but as a former rehabilitated young offender having been straight for 40 years I believe people can change but not from a wheelchair.I wasn’t involved in drugs but I’ve lost close family members to heroin addiction so understand the strong feelings.I don’t know the answer the only answer I have is Gods love and mercy which has served me sustained me all of my life outside of that I see only hurt.

The war on drugs never worked and this wont work either. It's not necessarily the drugs that are the problem. Most middle class people regularly consume alcohol, cocaine, weed and ecstasy at the weekend and with a few exceptions don't have problems with it. Obviously heroin is a lot worse but still its always the poorer areas that tend to have the problems. Just as much drugs in middle class areas but less problems.

My understanding, there's a war, the stronger power has the capacity to win, tanks, guns, alliance with other countries, the other power doesn't give a fk anymore, and will fight by any means necessary, as they can't win in a straight out battle, example bunch of guys, going up against another bunch of guys with tanks. Also if your family is killed you will automatically become a terrorist, whether you take any action, that is what you will become. And as the saying goes, history is wrote by the victor, who could be as evil as you want.

The American Government and its "War on Drugs" (the DEA, Border Patrol/Customs, and other regional law enforcement of all levels) can take some notes from the IRA. They need to start going after the DEALERS, instead of harassing addicts and locking them up instead of getting them the help they need.

  • @MeaghanEdwards

    @MeaghanEdwards

    10 жыл бұрын

I agree that police need to stop harassing addicts (as it is a illness and needs to be treated as such), but another thing that needs to be done is a major overhaul of drug laws; the IRA, like the Mexican drug cartel, etc, kill dealers as a way of eliminating competition. They (like other terrorist organizations) get their money by dealing drugs. They are thriving on the current laws.

It is the original name, it stands for Daire, the Irish word for an Oak grove ... because they are on the island called Ireland. Anglo-Norman invaders of the British Isles have been trying to conquer Ireland for almost 1k years. In 1155 Pope Adrian IV abused his power as Pope to invade and claim Ireland for the English crown. He was the first and last Englishmen to ever be the Pope. Then in 1600s a Protestant King, James I, pushed out Gaels from Ulster and the Highlands and supplanted them with northern English and lowland Scots.

I'm English thankfully so don't believe in fairy tales myself but you can well imagine what happens when Catholic go around taking babies. The only trouble was they couldn't go five minutes without killing each other. I know they bombed a few civvies in mainland Britain but most of it was countrymen killing countrymen over a few spubs hundreds of years ago. If everyone went around killing naighboura because at one point some group had wronged them in some way then we'd all be extinct.
