The Essence of Meditation

In this month’s teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche explains the essence of meditation and how you will know if you are in meditation or not. He also teaches what it means to be distracted and offers a simple method for beginning your own meditation practice.
How would you describe the essence of meditation to a friend who is curious about meditation? How does this relate to what Mingyur Rinpoche describes as, “Don’t meditate, but don’t get lost”?

Excellent point! I used to have this problem. I'm no expert/teacher, but here's what I think Rinpoche might say about that (based on other videos of him where similar issues are addressed). Try not to control the breath. But if you find yourself controlling it anyway, then accept that this will happen. Instead of struggling with your controlling of the breath, turn your attention to your controlling mind. Try to watch the whole process of you controlling the breath. Do it with a sense of humor, as in "look at me, there I go again ... controlling the breath frantically".

When I notice there comes a thought, do I name the thought, before I go back to breath? Like "aha, a thought, its about my dog" and then back to breath again? Because If I do not summarize the thought, I have the feeling, I do not know, what the thought was about. Like it stays unconscious. Or does it not matter in this type of meditation, to be conscious about the thought? That its just about going back to breath?

Sherwal Kumar Neeraj he talks about vipassana in a short video titled ‘analytical meditation’. I would say this instruction is more shamatha, which stabilizes awareness to be able to do vipassana. The two goes hand in hand.

Awareness is aware of anything or everything and when not aware of anything or everything then awareness is not present.actually it's kind of hard to be aware of the sound because the awareness aren't aware of it? Mostly I engaged or angry with loud sound and not aware of what happening with my awareness.to be more accurate say I am lost but I am not sure if I am aware of the sound because I am getting engaged or angry on the sound. Also this make me have a question is it awareness is the only true essence to meditation but not being aware since I am actually aware of the sound which make me angry or fear because even I am aware of it I am still angry and doesn't feel like meditate anymore .Example after some moment breathing I still got scared by those loud sound and I am aware of them but I am angry and cannot meditate already. Many thought and emotion surfaces which make me hard to relax again to meditate. I think the thing that should be explained to other is they misunderstood meditation as most monk meditation state. Maybe need a word for that to clear this misunderstanding so people can use the explanation you give to meditate more naturally.
