THE ESEE-NTIAL LINEUP Which Esee is right for you? Esee 3 vs 4, Esee 5 ,Esee 6, Esee Izula, Junglas.

Inspired by information I wish I had when purchasing these knives, I have decided to condense some general data of most of the esee lineup. I was Looking on forums to gain better insight into the best uses for these knives only to realize the plethora of misinformation mixed with good information. When you have no basis for comparison it can be tough to distinquish the difference. The largest misconception that i know of is the how similar the esee3 and 4 are. This is wildly inaccurate as they are completly different knives. I hope this video is insturmental in helping you decide the knife that is right for you. This is important to me because these are not cheap knives per say. coupled with the fact that they can be difficult to come across to feel and see the difference for youself. when i set out to bring fellow gear lovers some helpful data, I did so with the intention of staying faithful to promoing products that i would buy again if I had to. Although everyone has different tastes and preferences quality is a timeless and universal truth. I feel the esee lineup is indicative of just that.

    Great review…thank you. I am an owner of the izula, and very, very many military and historical knives. I wanted to further my owning a of Esee and wanted to purchase a new, bigger fixed blade. Thanks to your video, I started the rabbit hole with the esee 3mil….and ended up purchasing the esee 4pko black linen handles with glass breaker pommel, and straight edge black blade. Perfect all around knife with the blade finger grip and excellent coatings.

    Good review. I really like the ESEE series knives and use my ESEE 4 as an EDC. I really hate when people give these knives negative reviews- I don't know why, because everyone has a right to their own opinion. But I just don't find their points valid. But I'm glad to see your video and the positive aspects of each knife.

    Thank you! I have become an esee fan too! I really like the 4 too. It's pretty hard to ding esee on anything quality related. All I could think of would be steel snobs not liking the steel choice. Or something subjective that they don't personally care for. Esee has gained a pretty stellar track record from my person testing as well as the research I've done. I'd think it would be tough to pick on tools that flat out work but then again, this is youtube! Thank you for your comment as well as your view! -Chase

    Thank you! The Bk-9 is a fantastic knife! Definitely one of my favorite large Knives that I own. I purchased some aftermarket micarta scales for it and that really seemed to complement it. That's just it though, if you get a bk9 and spend $50 on micarta scales you might as well get an Esse with the better sheath. So for those looking for a higher degree of fit, finish, handle scales, sheaths, and warranty, the Esee may be the way to go value wise. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to comment as well as watching the video!

    Great video thanks. I have always heard good things about Esee knives. I was thinking about getting a Esee 6 but then I found out about the Tops knife sold by TKC in their Architect line the 6.5 Field Buddy knife. Comes with the interchangeable with Esee improved Esee handles and 3v steel. The tip is thicker and stronger but not as tactical as the Esee knives for stabbing. Great choice of leather or Kydex sheaths. I did just order my first Esee knife tonight, Izula II, with matching handle scales with my 6.5 Field Buddy knife. The field buddy has a 6.9 inch blade of 3/16 and is about a inch longer over all then the Esee and my chop a little better then the Esee 6. I really like my Field Buddy knife and this IzulaII is a good pairing I think.

    Nice video and good info on the Esse lineup. I am looking at getting my first Esse in a few months (after Christmas) and I am torn between the Esse 5 and Esse 6. Sort of leaning towards the Esse 6 even though that 1/4" blade on the 5 is so appealing! Anyway, thanks for the video.

    Thank you very much, I really appreciate that! You really can't go wrong with either one! I was equally impressed with both. Also, there is a better than even chance that you will end up with both at some point, if you are anything like myself : ) I do like the sheath better on the 5 though. They are equally functional, I guess I just prefer kydex. The quarter inch steel of the 5 makes it an absolute juggernaut! It is almost novelty as it is ridiculously over built, which is part of its charm. It is surprisingly nimble if you need to do detail work. In fact I whittled a little staute as part of a video that I never finished. The 6 is normally my go to as I prefer longer thinner blades and it weighs less. It is also incredibly durable despite it's thinner blade. Anyway, if you have any questions or want help making a decision just let me know. Thank you for watching as well as your comment!

    I have the 3 and have modded it a bit. I stripped the black coating and then applied gun blue. I also filled a section of the spine so you can use a fero rod. I have the black nylon backing as well and in combination with the molded plastic makes a nice carry platform. It is quickly becoming my favorite knife. The Laser Strike is on my wish list. Nice review.

    @@ccmogs5757 The knives I use and carry depends on what I have planned when I leave the house. The Esse 4 is the best of knife because it's light weight easy to carry and can handle lots of tasks. I use the Esse 3 as my carry knife every day because mine is half serrated with a glass breaker on the end. I carry it in a Azwelke custom kydex taco sheath. It fits in my pocket easy and faster to deploy than a folding knife. If you have a chance look at Knifeworks website for Esse knives they have the best prices and selection. You can get some great deals on their discontinued Esse knives selection they offer.

    I never really like the military-ish ESEE knives. Until now ESEE had not another option. Now I love their new Camp-lore line up compared to the ones above in this video they are perfect for my Alaskan bushcraft needs. - ESEE Camp-lore DC6 (least needed for I use kukris & Natas for a large camp knife) - ESEE Camp-lore Gibson JG3 - ESEE Camp-lore Bolieu RB3 (the best one for bushcraft) - ESEE Camp-lore CR 2.5 IMO the Camp-lore are the better knives for use if you are non-military.

  • @chasepalagi7675

    @chasepalagi7675

    That's interesting, I've never really looked at the original Esee line as "millitary-ish". when I think millitary knives I think of the clip point saber ground knives like ka-bar USMC, SOG seal 2000, or even the ontario air force survival knife. Although the clip point offerings from esee are rather unique I take your point. The full flat ground drop point blades like the fallkniven f1 always had a bushcraft feel to me. Then again Esee and the various designers made their new series specifically for bushcraft so I'm sure you're on to something. I see some cool designs from the camp lore series but can not comment one way or the other on them as I have not had the pleasure of working with them as of yet. I am looking forward to it though. As soon as I found out they were coming out I wanted to get this video done (before I spent a small fortune on another series). Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave your comment. I always find it interesting to hear different point of views. I actually learn a lot that way so thanks again. -Chase

    Chase Palagi No problem Chase. When I say ESEEs are "military-ish" I mean that there target audience is the military minded hence the colored knives, military sheaths, overbuild designs, and large choppers. For bushcrafters campers, hikers they are OK but a little heavy and on the expensive side for a outdoor knife (IMO). Plus it wouldn't hurt to have an ESEE hidden or stick tang to do less brutal work like Mora has done. The Camp-lore series should be better and hopefully cheaper for a 1095 steel knife. But I know we are paying for quality.

    Chase Palagi The ka-bar USMC, SOG seal 2000, and Ontario Air force Survival knife are old school survival knives (that still work mind you). Today's military are going with the type ESEE puts out. Just look at the *2 pound total* with sheath US M9 Bayonet (heavy, wider and colored blade). Any knife will work in the woods but for me I think bushcraft knives are much better than the military Rambo "pants pulling down" knives that are marketed in the USA.

    sweetcostarica I see what you are saying. I guess I never considered the the colors, sheaths, and all of that but that does make sense. Since the idea of the "combat/fighting knife"has kind of gone to the waste-side it makes Sense that they would gravitate toward a utility knife that they could mark with their colors and molle syle sheaths with a secondary purpose of fighting. I just never really looked at it that way until now. Thank you for your perspective. I sure hope the camp lore line will be cheaper but something tells me that is wishful thinking. Then again I don't know I haven't checked it out. Thanks again! -Chase

    8:39 For me the most outstanding feature of the ESEE5 is its wood splitting ability. That ultra-steep sabre grind just shoves wood out of the way, where an esee6 would bind up most times. For some reason you didn't really emphasise this aspect, which for me is probably its to selling point.

  • @ATOMSKI_MRAV

    He didn't emphasize it to your liking because it seems you're extremely partial to your 5 but he did mention that it will chop better than the rest and he shows you how he splits wood with it. That's good enough I'd say.

    I think discussion of prices would have completed what was an excellent run down of the range. For those unfamiliar with the brand, helps to assess real value. If a good knife is overpriced -- huge profit mark up added to cost of sale, it is still low value; if an average quality knife has a reasonable profit mark up that's very competitive, it's higher value. We can look up current retail prices of course.

    i finally decided on the esee LS-P with green handles i like the regular blades but as you know the LS is kinda like a canoe style blade which is fine with me but i am assuming the LS was a special order by an agency or something and a lot were made and the order not purchased i think not for sure but i thought that might be the price difference in it and the 5 but both look like hard ass all around knife , i'm a knife man got some worth more than others but i'm really glad i found esee Rowan heat treated and i really like a hard n high grade carbon steel seems like i cant get the edge i like on ss , but i have always liked Case xx i had the old lock blade before Zippo bought m out but the lock broke on it but they honored the warranty but i never really had a real survival knife so i can't wait for Christmas to get my LS-P green handles it looks like a hoss n a boss , i also need a leather sheath or just use what it comes with to carry kinda concealed or canter style i think it's called but thanks for the review video's they really helped me make my mind , i also will get my daughter the Izula with a full grip but thanks folks

    The laser strike sounds like a great option for what you're looking for! Nice mid sized, thinner blade knife. It sounds like everything worked out for you and I'm glad to hear it! It is however, a shame you are unable to get a great edge on it as 1095 is known for taking a very keen edge. I know what you mean though, some knives can be a bit more difficult than others. I'm also surprised to hear that it didn't come to you razor sharp. I have yet to experience a sub par edge on an esee out of the box. At any rate, I hope your knife serves you well and I really appreciate you taking the time to leave your feedback! Oh, and fyi, the Izula 2 has a little more handle length and comes stock with scales that wrap around the hole. You may have been aware but thought it worth mentioning.

    I apologize, I mis-read your post. I believe you were simply stating that you have a harder time sharpening carbon steel than stainless? That too is interesting as carbon is normally easier for me likely due to the lack of chromium and/or vanadium. Then again I suppose it depends on the steel. Something like 420j or 440A would be very easy to sharpen. On the other hand something like S-90-V on my 940-1 Is about as tough as it comes.

    Thanks for posting this review. Wasn't real familiar with ESEE's line previously. Glad to hear that you have a high opinion of their customer service. What I took away from your video was that the ESEE 5 stands out as a particularly robust and useful field knife. Thinking now of acquiring one as a backcountry blade. How high would you rate the 5 against some of the similiar offerings from knife makers such as KA-BAR, SOG, Coldsteel etc.

  • @chasepalagi7675

    @chasepalagi7675

    9 жыл бұрын

    The esee 5 is certainly robust! As long as you don't mind the extra weight it should serve you very well in that application! As far as other offerings, the Kabar Becker BK 2 "companion" is a very similar blade in just about every way (length, thickness, steel, grind, ect.) And wouldn't hesitate to recommend that one either. As a matter of fact I have a brief video on the BK2 if you care to check it out? I can't think of anything comparable in the SOG line up off the top of my head. As far as cold steel goes the SRK is a fantastic knife (to be reviewed) though a different style blade as well. It has about a 6" blade and a thickness of about 3/16. Also saber ground. That is the closest offering from cold steel that I can think of at the moment. Anyway thank you for watching and good luck with your knife purchase!

    I just watched a chopping competition with about 25 brands involved and the Kershaw Camp 10 won defeating the Junglas, Rtac2 and the legendary GSO-10 which is a 350 dollar blade. The Kershaw was the cheapest knife and the competition at 44.95 at Knife Center. I think it's the modified kukri design that enabled it to out chop all these other blades.

    Copy that. Yeah, Fox is a Italian Co. They use a Bohler N690Co. I just wanted to increase my wwt and snowy condition knives, So I went with that steel, Some say it's equivelant to 440b, I say it's alot better. But one of my Fav. Stainless Steel Set are my Fallkniven A-1 with my H-1 a lovely piece of kit. But recently Steel Will caufgt my fancy. I teamed the Druid Series, I got the Druid 240 with my Druid 230 which is a 9.06" blade and .20" thick, infact so is my 240, But the 240 is shy of 5", The Steel is 9Cr18MoV, and it's alittle better than 440b. The S W Dark angel for the $$$ is a great buy. The Druid's are made in Taiwan but the Darkangel is made in Italy in the N690Co. It's a Tactical looking feature. But work's great as a Utility/Camp Bush Craft Knife. Sweet and the price is very reasonable . If it was alittle shorter, I would of teamed it with my Fox Bushcraft Parang. But the Master Hunter is shorter a better match for what I need it for and 3V is not too shabby. It was nice, Keep in touch.,,.

    paulie 4x Nice, I am familiar with those steels, just not the companies. In fact, I am currently testing a Kylin folding knife for review with N690 steel. I thing that is a very strange choice for a folding knife in the $800 price range. Then again I'm not a knife designer. I have used it and it seems comparable to like 154 cm, 440 c, or maybe VG10 in edge resistance. I understand that it is a tougher stainless steel and that is why it would be appropriate for the fixed blade you are talking about. It also sharpens easy but agsin, a very strange choice for a very expensive folding knife. At what point do these people just grab a fixed blade? lol : )

  • @paulie4x1

    @paulie4x1

    True that, I like the steel and again, It's for my wet and snowy conditions but yet it's good in all weather and low maintenance . Food friendle too. Yeah, I also like the 154 CM, but I like the 154 CPM better it's actually comparable to O1.But since I bought my Hitam Golok first because I like chopper's to team them with smaller knives, Allow's me to cover all my bases and I'm not concerned about what's Bushcraft and what's Survival, that's why I carry a larger/smaller knives .But since I already had the Hitam Golok, I teamed mine with the Fox Trakker Utility Camp and Snipper Knife and with NY Fox Bushcraft Parang, I'm going with a C. S. Master Hunter in 3V and they match. I also got a Fox Jungle Combat and teamed it with a Fix Pro Hunter, I'm also getting the Fox Trapper which I'll team up with a Fox Casaba, and that's it for my Fox Stable, But serious check out the Steel Will's, for the $$ they make excellent knives, I know you'll like their folder's.,,.

Can't find out much but I don't know if I want to carry a 6-in knife was thinking of getting the 4-in do you know if the handles are all of the same just the blade length is different . Or just go with the 5 in the middle . Or is there a big difference between all three sizes thank you .

  • @chasepalagi7675

    @chasepalagi7675

    They really are all great knives but they are all different and excell in different areas. As far as the handle sizes. The 5 and 6 are the same size (interchangeable)and will have the largest handle of this line up (aside from the junglas.) The 5 and 6 are totally different though. The 5 is very thick, heavy duty, and is saber ground. The 6 is full flat ground, much thinner, and the blade is a little longer. The 4 is a terrific knife as well. It is pretty thick for its length and is full flat ground. My hand size is between medium and large. I have pretty long fingers but thinner than most. When I hold the 4, there is extra space at the bottom. I could get another finger on it . It also has a choil. If you tend to use choils when using knives, you would have more than enough room. If I had to guess, I'd say an XL hand would fill the handle size perfectly. If you are concerned that it won't, I suppose the 5 or 6 would be a safe bet. Thank you watching and if you have any other questions just let me know

    Pretty good revie, I really like pairing off my knives, a d I like a good quality plastic sheath even better than a kydex sheath, the plastic sheath doesn't dull my blades as much as kydex does, I'm sorry to say I don't have any Essee or Top's Knives well maybe a close with the BK-14 it has Ka-Bar/Essee on it and a Top's Mini Scandi M.S.K. , but I do have a Swamp Rat Set that is similar in size to your Essee ' s I paired my Rodent 9 with my Ratmandu, my Rodent 7 with my Rodent 4, and my new just got today Rodent 6 but I had the blade thinned and the top gaurd taken off at Swamp Rat's Custom Shop, I luv my choil's and Swamp Rat is the only one that puts a choil on their knives and has the Saber Vex Grind except for my Rodent Solution which has a Convex Grind and I paired that off with my new Rodent 6, I also have a Rodent Rucki which your right works great for clearing brush at a 15 1/2" blade lenght, but the real advantage is it has a choil and it baton's well too, so I don't really have to get another knife when building a shelter for instance, but from what I have read Essee does make one of the best 1095 High Carbon Blade out there, and your right that warranty sounds like a winner, I really enjoyed your video as I compared what I have to these great knives you reviewed, good job, and Thanx.

    I don't own the Bob but have manipulated it in person and it is a cool knife. I like the fit, finish, and extras to include the sheath. However if we are just focusing on the knives, I would prefer the esee 6. Then again I am partial to a full flat ground blade. I suppose the BOB is geared more toward bushcraft. I find the design of the esee 6 to be a bit more Versatile for my intended use. I hope this helps, but if you can give me more info as to your primary and secondary use for your knife I may be able to help you more. If you have any other questions, please let me know. +Christian Sukkar The esee 6 is a great knife! It is longer than the BOB and it's gradual approach from the spine to the edge makes the 6 a fantastic slicing knife. It came shaving sharp right out of packaging. It may be a bit long for some however, I think it is about the perfect size for a "do it all" type knife. I honestly don't think you will be disappointed.

    Tor Lönnqvist That's a tough one! If your mora will always be with your esee, the 5 may be a better *contrast. It is a serious beast! It's very thick durable and rugged. If you were to have only one knife, I personally think the 6 is more versatile because it is much thinner which can be squeezed into anything from food prep to batoning. The both are fantastic but I do prefer the canvass micarta and kydex sheath on the 5. I hope this helps. If not, let me know and I'll try to give you a better explanation. Mr. Kitty It sounds like you have thought this through! Truthfully I seriously doubt you would be disappointed with either blade. Although the 3 is much thinner, it's plenty strong for its length. It just kind of reminds me of a 3 inch razor. The 4 is a very rugged knife, I think it would be extremely difficult to break that one because of the thickness to length ratio. It is simply a smaller super tough knife. If you were going to see yourself prying, digging, batoning(What the length will allow), I would go with the 4. If it were more a general utility, edc, carving, sort of blade, either would work but you may enjoy the razor like quality of the 3. I hope this helps. PS I do not mean to imply that the 4 isn't or can't be super sharp, is is in fact very sharp, it is just much thicker behind your cutting edge.

    After reading your response and trying to keep a lighter load out it would seem the 3 would be better to pair with my Junglas. My reasoning is that the Junglas will be tasked with the brut work of batoning, digging and prying. The 3 could do the detail type work while weighing less. Thanks for the help, what you said made sense. Now it's time to order my Esse 3, can't wait to get it!

    I'm not going to be going into the woods like a survivalist. but I'm also not going to carry the knife everyday . Mainly for when I'm at my camp or in the woods with my quad would like to be able to have a knife in case of any reason. I just want a good all-around one that fits in my hand good . like I said before I have a very large hand . extra large . I think I would like the 4in but the handle looks a lot smaller , it might not be as comfortable to use . so possibly the 5 or 6 any information on the hand size and comfortability would help .

    I see, Yes the 4's handle length is about 4 1/2 inches long. The handle on the 5 and 6 is about 5 3/4" I now have custom scales on both the 5 and 6 so frankly I don't remember what it felt like. I don't recall complaining of any hot spots or anything like that. If you get the 5 it has canvass micarta scales which is a bit more aggressive in texture. Also, it is a quarter inch thick so it would probably fill your hand out nicely. It comes with the nicer kydex sheath as well. I love them both but I am personally a little more drawn to the 6. I prefer longer and thinner blades as they have proven more versatile for my use. It is still insanely strong and well built. I suppose the only downside is the molded plastic sheath but it too is very functional. I honestly do think you will disappointed either way.

    I most likely will carry them both at the same time, because the weight of my bag is never that crucial. The bigger knife (one of the ESEE's) would be used for heavier tasks such as shelter building and batoning, and the stainless Mora for food prep and carving.

    Tor Lönnqvist Like I was saying, I seriously doubt you would be disappointed with either one, they both are that good! Although I am not concerned in the least about the durabilty of the esee 6, the 5 is damn near indestructible! I feel that the esee 6 is a bit more versatile than the 5 but if you'll always have your mora, then you could take advantage of the juggernaut characteristics of the 5 with no sacrifice in utility. Obviously you get a marginally longer blade with the 6 for whatever that is worth? They both make great all around utility knives. I normally prefer thinner full flat ground blades for slicing capabilities however, if I had a mora with me then I wouldn't be as concerned with slicing. With all of this being said, as long as weight is not an issue and you are pairing it with your mora, I personally would go with the esee 5 for the reasons stated as well as the nicer kydex sheath, and better traction of the canvas micarta on the 5 (as apposed to the smoother linen micarta on the esee 6). good luck and if you don't mind, let me know what you decide

    Thank you! if you are asking my personal opinion, I favor plain edge when doing just about anything outdoors, wood working especially. It will definitely depend on what you will be using your blade for though. if you are looking for an edc knife, perhaps you'd want serrations to help cut through synthetic materials. the biggest advantage I've found for serrations is getting through tough rubber like hosing or cutting bread, or something similar. Aside from that, there isn't a whole lot that the serrations will do that a plain edge won't. Also serrations are not the easiest to maintain. Don't get me wrong, it can be done but it almost always results in rounding them off if you are not very careful. Granted, the stay usable sharp for a long time and you can touch them up if you put the back of them pretty much flat on a stone and use rearward strokes, but to actually sharpen them it can be a bit more challenging. if you let me know what you will be using the knife for primarily and secondary, I may be able to help find a good match for you, unless you have it figured out already? just let me know if I can help. Thank for your comment as well as taking the time to watch the video! -Chase

  • @chasepalagi7675

    @chasepalagi7675

    7 жыл бұрын

    Darofla I suppose it would be lend on what you are wanting to get out of it. 440C Is a stainless steel. It a bit more Carbon then 1095, it also has a lot more chromium than 1095. That being said, it isn't going to be quite as tough as 1095. (They are both more than tough enough to do about anything in a blade that size. 1095 will rust if you don't oil, or wipe your blade off after use. The coating will protect the blade but I believe the 440C is offered without a coating, if you don't like them as some don't. 440C may chip and or/ pit easier. 1095 is easier, and more rewarding to sharpen as it seems to take a super fine edge. All in all I really like carbon steels like 1095 in the outdoors. They require a little up keep, but how tough is it to wipe your blade after use? If you live in a high humidity area I would recommend 440C.I really don't think you'd be disappointed with either. Thanks for watching!

  • @Darofla

    @Darofla

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thank you very much that are alot very usefull infos for me. Also I dont have experience with the 1095. I only know the 440c. Humidity is also a factor here in north germany. At many days its over 94% here in winter and summer nowadys. Also the salt water north sea clima is applied here. I wouldnt use it much as a hard user knife in the woods. More as an edc pocket carry knife.

  • @chasepalagi7675

    @chasepalagi7675

    7 жыл бұрын

    You bet not a problem! In light of your location, humidity, and salt water, I feel you may get more out of the 440C version. Also keep in mind the word "stainless" is often misunderstood as it can still rust. The amount of chromium is normally what determines how stain resistant the steel is. Generally anything over 13% is considered stainless but this is also dependant on carbon content and other vaiables. Long story short, 440C is not the MOST stain resistant steel out there but it will be much better than 1095. In harsh and humid climates, you may notice small amounts of rust on 440C if you don't care for your blade. Just food for thought.

    Player187 Not at all! It actually does remarkably well while batoning. The only thing that limits it is the length of the blade. To remedy this, you simply corner off whatever larger piece of wood you have and there is no limit to the size of wood you can baton through. The video after my next one is an in depth look at the esee4. In short, that knife is extremely tough and can do pretty much anything from bushcraft to batoning. If you were to pick only one as more of a general purpose knife what would it be? I’m leaning towards the 4 or the 6 especially since it will be combined with a hatchet so knife doesn’t have to be a chopper.

  • @chasepalagi7675

    @chasepalagi7675

    4 жыл бұрын

    If it is paired with a hatchet, I would personally would go with a thinner blade as I find them a bit more versatile. So probably the 3 or 6. The 4 is a terrific knife, it just may be a bit over-built for being paired with a hatchet and the thicker stock isn't quite as conducive to food prep, detail work, etc. Shorter blades usually give people more control but longer ones give more options. Again, if paired with a hatchet I don't know if you want a bunch of added length. So if it were me personally, I'd probably recommend a 3. Between the 2 mentioned, the 6. But keep in mind if you got any of them I truly believe you'd be very happy with your decision. It is pretty hard to lose when all of your choices are good! Thank you for watching!
