ESEE Knives - Why Always ESEE?

Ойын-сауық

I get a lot of questions about ESEE knives, many times people are asking why I'm always using, talking about and mentioning ESEE knives. Why not other brands? What's my relationship with ESEE? In this video I make an attempt to explain.

"We do our absolut best to put out the best products we can" your right if you wanna learn how to sharpen a knife get a 1095. If you want to learn how to take care of a knive get 1095. If you want a cheap knife get 1095. But if you wanna have fun in the woods 1095 isnt the way to go.... if you somehow realise that and you Switch the steel i would buy every Single one of them bcs your design is 10/10

Jay Ballard Thank you for watching and the kind words. Any ESEE can be carried scout style but the sheath it belt attachment gas a lot to do with it. Personally I feel Armatus Carry makes a well made kydex sheath with a double belt loop attachment method that carries the sheath really well for scout carry style. The sheath is also pretty low profile which will make it that much more comfortable.

Honestly I use any kind of oil or lubricant, my fixed blade knives never touch food so I'm not too worried about what I use. Lately I've been using WD40. After I get home from the woods I do a couple passes on a strop, hit the blade with WD40, wipe off any excess and I'm good to go.

@@TexasPatriotOffRoadAndOutdoorsI don't know much about this topic, but I think that the hm versions are more of a, let's say, bushcraft design. More rounded handles so you can use them longer, carve with them without worrying about blisters, in general for slower and longer work... the handles of the original models have guards, so you would be able to use them in "tactical" situation. In this case, the flat scales also make sense, because the knife feels like a tool (which it is, but i hope you understand what i'm trying to say) in your hand, you know what way you are holding it and where exactly the blade is without watching it in your hand... i think this is why "bushcrafters" don't like these versions, because they are not ment for slow and long work, but only for the essentials in a moment when you really need the knife... i hope I helped somehow, btw I own the 4 (original) and the 6 hm, that is how i came up with this "theory"... I wish someone from ESEE would tell us what They think of this...

I'm with you, ESEE is my go to for knives. I mostly modify (etch, custom etch, and sometimes mirror polished) and resell them, but I have an esee 3 that I'll never get rid of. Your point on are there better knife steels, yes there are but are there better warranties or customer service? Absolutely not. Unfortunately the esee 4 no longer comes with kydex, but with three 3 and 4 the plastic sheath works just fine. I would replace the 6's sheath with kydex though. I just don't like the jimping on the thumb ramp. Do you still have the esee 4 clip point? I remember in your earlier videos that was your go to.

Yeah it will rust but as long there is done perfectly hardening and quenching meaning the edge is hard enough so even there is rust it will cut n easy to remove the rust, i just find the wet branch and slice it then dry wood n slice it the rust will go off 70% on the edge. 1095 easy to sharp even with cheap stone.

You cannot ruin the edge of an ESEE 5 by simply batoning . I have one and it stays next to me even when I sleep. I put a convex edge and you can shave with it. And what is this thing with these so called outdoor, survivalist etc, that always the first thing they do with a knife is batoning because carrying an axe is too heavy for their fragile hands?! Sad generations who have no clue about life and no respect for our ancestors who handled the bussines. 1095 steel heat treated by Rowen is the best. Try it and see for yourself. Stay sharp brother.

I've been to a couple of their classes and couldn't believe how down to earth they were. Not once did the owners or instructors push ESEE products. In fact, each class I've attended I've used a knife from a competing brand. They ask to check my blade out and offer compliments. They're just normal people who put their passion for outdoor skills in front of their sales. When you make a solid product and stand behind it, it sells itself.

One day, maybe, when ESEE decide to address the stainless steel issue, I might decide to pay more attention to their knives. I love everything about ESEE knives - except 1095 steel! I'm too used to my knives being ready all the time without having to pamper them all the time, like every weekend derusting chore. If ESEE have a major problem with stainless steels (especially the modern ones) then tell us about that. If it's because they only know 1095, let them tell us. Do Rowan only work with 1095? Apparently not! So why only the little knives for stainless? Share with us so we can understand.

Depends on what you already own. My favorite knife overall is right in that size range, but is hand ground to a thin edge, beautifully satin finished and made out of m390 (no chips or rolling yet), so there is no need for an ESEE 6 in my collection (what doesn't mean, that I wouldn't want one). The Laser Strike although is my second favorite overall, because it has the same "no-worries-toughness" that you get from an ESEE 4 or 5 with the controllability of a Mora when choked up. I don't find it as simplistically beautiful than the rest of the lineup, but it has it's own charm to it. Not to forget the amazing value you get (especially in Europe). Sheath's also unbeatable from my experience.

I have two of the same model - TRC Apocalypse L 2nd gen. They where 5mm (.19") stock, high flat ground and in M390. The current model (3rd gen) is in 6,5mm (.25") high flat ground ELMAX. They have various models though, you'll find something out of M390 for sure, maybe just not as large. If you don't mind the minuscule difference between M390 and ELMAX, I'd say just go with the current Apocalypse. The blades are built exceptionally well for what I have seen yet (I own five), and for that, their prices are fair. Plan on spending between 250-400 bucks depending on model, finish and exclusivity. Arizona Custom Knives had some and I believe BHQ carries them as well... if not you'll find them in europe.

Well, to be honest, besides saying that the sheath is good as well as the size and weight of the knife you didn't really tell why these knifes are so awesome and what exactly are they awesome for. I have no idea what are you doing with your knives sir besides this misterious 'cutting', but in my opininon if you hardly ever baton with a knife, you're not being 'brutal' on it. I highly recommend watching a DBK video about ESSE 5 in which they respectfully show why ESSE is perhaps not a very good outdoor knife, specially for that price. If you want something just to 'cut things' go with a mora knife for 15 bucks and get a Sandvik steel so you won't have to worry about the rust. It's just my opninion, please don't get offended.

No offense taken. You misunderstood the video my friend. We all know how great ESEE knives are, how tough they are... That's not what this video was about. It was more about my experience dealing with ESEE, how they where there for me many years ago when I was started my business. You can have the best knife ever made, but how you treat people, your customers separates your business from all the others. That's ESEE for me, it's more than just the knife, more than any of their products... It's the company as a whole. I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video, even though it wasn't what you where hoping for. But well and stay safe. Keep them knives sharp! 👊

@@GearReviewDepot all you've said in your video is how good they are to deal with...nothing about quality or design or what they have over other manufacturers in performance. Ok so they have good customer service....doesn't make it a good knife.
