i love 1095 it is still more elastic than premium steel though premium ones hold longer edge (and are much more resistant to corrosion yet they still do once neglected ) but not by a lot especially considering the time factor to sharpen premium steel after heavy use (O the problems if a chip occurred and do not have premium ceramic stones ) . after owning both I will take 1095 and Tool steels over premium steels they are cheaper and do the same job with less fear of using them also after all to wipe them and oiling them is part of the fun Premium steels are for a different purpose than for field and heavy use they are good for folding and small knives the only thing i wish is for small everyday use 1095 not to coat them with something not good to use for food finally the slicing of 1095 is smoother unless i am full of it

my S90V and my 420mV which are the same are custom made and i still prefer the 1095 and RWl34 customs from diving sparrow knives

du bist ein fester idiot! 1095 stahl mit einer 60 RW härte is einfach zu hart, sprich er wird spröde. esee is scheisse! die lösung ist eine dickere klinge und etwas weniger RW härte - fertig. die dickere klinge braucht mehr zeit in der herstellung und ist somit teurer - sprich esee ist scheisse!

I just love that a company makes a video about breaking their own product under stress as its realistic.

Your 1095 is the best. I like that you are being responsive to your customers and keeping the best warranty in the business. I personally like steels like S35 for folders but your 1095 is hard to beat in a fixed blade. That is my preference. Love the new line of handles.

I find it very comforting that this is the standard for testing these knives. We all need gear that'll be there when we finish the activity that we needed the knife for in the first place. This is why I like ESEE.

This type of behavior from a manufacturer really is the gold standard. Honest about the materials science, no hype or misinformation, and no changes to the warranty despite major changes in blade materials. This is how it should be.

I'm just going to throw my "you should try 3V" comment into the ring with everyone else. S35VN is excellent but 3V has proven to be a bomb-proof fan favourite for outdoor knives that you really want to beat on. I'm really hoping you guys can offer this steel in the future.

Glad to see you guys telling folks to use the right tool for the job. Recreational battoning has gotten out of hand.

I love how much ESEE are responding to commets there are such few companies that do this !

You guys need to get your hands on CPM Magnacut. It is a new steel with the strength of 4v/M4 with the edge retention greater than S35vn and corrosion resistance greater than M390. You can run it up to 62-63 HRC without losing strength.

@@Butch_Deezlsteak the creator of Magnacut has shown in tests that it can be ran up to 64 HRC without losing much strength. Obviously the higher you go the more brittle it becomes but it is plenty strong at 62-64. 63 is the ideal balance. At that point it is about twice the strength of S30V.

It's also supposed to be decently easy to sharpen. I'd buy that shit so fast if ESEE made a model.

There are TWO things that I am completely sure of when it comes to this life we are all in. The love that Jesus Christ has for all of us and ESEE knives will stand behind there products. I have SEVERAL of them and I fully expect them to be passed down to my great great grand children! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE and trust your knives! Keep up the good work!

I live on Vancouver Island and I regularly choose my 12c27 or n690co knives over my 1095/52100/1075 knives due to rust when I'm out filming and exploring. I think this is a great move and ppl like me who are only interested in stainless knives now can think about getting an ESEE again. Take care best of luck ✌️

No problem, ppl also don't realize the extra shop gear and thought power needed to start producing a higher end stainless at a good hrc vs your typical carbon steels, ie plate quenching etc. I also don't think the crazy toughness of 3v matters enough in a 3in blade, I would make corrosion and edge retention the priority. Just my opinion there

I don't know much about knives but I'm really impressed with the honesty in this video.

Thanks for an honest video . 1095 has stood the test of time not as a racehorse , but a tough ass hell Molly mule .

Theres a great steel called Nitro V that a bunch of custom makers are working with often these days, due to its relative balance of desirable attributes (stainlessness, strength, machineability and price), if you are still in the discovery phase it would be a good one to try. S35VN is great though, as long as folks go into it with reasonable expectations. Great video!

I gotta say that I appreciate your honest and upfront discussion of your products. I have two of the older D2 Esee 3 knives and like them very much, but the heat and humidity in the summertime in the area I live in causes the blade edges to dull. I have never batoned a knife in my life, so I am not worried about hurting the S35VN blade through that. I am waiting now until the new stainless Esee 3 and the Xancudo come out, as I plan to buy both. I am really getting into a small fixed blade as a EDC knife. I had a Spyderco Yojimbo 2 open up in my pocket and slice me when I reached in, so folding knives have lost some of their appeal to me. Have a great day fellas.

I just want to say, you guys have a ton of integrity. You are probably the only brand of any sort that I've seen where the video that most frequently comes up when I search you is one where you break your newest and arguably highest end product in testing.

Mad respect for ESEE for being honest and for putting out great products.

Honest, transparent and uses the tools they make ESEE are down to earth and get my nod. Personally I am happy with the 440c Izula for stain resistance and edge retention, not large enough for axe work abuse. Cheers

this is a very good knife....but it is different than our 1095 blades and we just wanted out customers to know the differences. If you use this as a knife and not a battering ram you will love it! Thanks again and if you need us, we are here for you.

I recently added an ESEE 3 S35VN to the collection and put on some blue Knife Connection handles - an amazing combo and super comfy/fills out my hand extremely well. I have to say it's such a great little knife and an incredible slicer, with the perfect balance of "not too big and not too small". It's quickly become one of my all-time favorites. With that being said, you guys reallllllllllllllllly need to explore adding (or replacing with) Magnacut and 3V into the range.

I love how up front you guys are with this. Kudos to you.

love the transparency and honesty here - been looking for a new fixed blade for a while and after seeing y'all in a few videos I think ESEE is the way i'm gonna go!

Over the years, I've owed both folding and fix blades in virtually every steel (including super steels) and still to this day, prefer a good 1095 or 01. I also really like a properly heat treated A2.

@@RandallsAdventureESEE Amen And also bladegrind, how the edge is ground, how you sharpen your blade, how you use it and how you maintain it. Good heat treat combined with a polished convex edge is better, than super steels and a bench grinder.

thank you! if we can't build it and stand behind it we won't do it....this video is all about making sure our customers expectations are aligned with our findings or they are at LEAST made aware of the benefits and limitations of these new offerings.

Best stainless options would be AEB-L or 14C28N for toughness

I'd definitely pick up a 3 or Izula II in S35VN for hunting or general purpose use. As far as my camp knife, I'll stick with my Esee 6 in 1095 and my Fiskars hatchet. Those two are the perfect pair for processing wood! That 1095 can take a beating and sharpen right back up with ease, I love it.

I can't help but, become a Essee owner because of this video (twisted my arm). Integrity is far and view between these days. The way you listen to customers and the transparency about the products you make is inspiring. Based on what I seen in this video I just purchased the Essee 6 but, I'm sure this Essee 3 in S35V will make it in my arsenal also.✌

If you all ever come out with an ESEE 6 in CPM-3V I will be all over that. Love my ESEE-6 blades (I have several, some are user/abusers and some are for display in my knife collection) and having one in uncoated CPM-3V would be excellent.

I appreciate that you guys are transparent with your results. Anyone that thinks super steels are “the best” hopefully learned here that there’s a give and take with edge retention and overall toughness.

I appreciate the amazing warranty you have at esee that I never miss treat one of my 7 esse’s i love them and your support makes me want to care for mine even further knowing if I accidentally mess it up I’ll still be happy with your crew and the company, the worst thing I’ve done with my izula is cut out some dragging trim on my wife’s car, because lady driver.. 👍🏼

I think your 440c and 440c in general are very underrated. I do appreciate that you guys are trying different steels and being honest about how it performs. I will be purchasing a zancudo fixed blade to use as a game processing knife.

We agree whole heartedly...many don't understand exactly how good 440c IS and that is is a far cry from 440a/b....but it's not the flash in the market that others are....

@@RandallsAdventureESEE Isn't 154CM very similar to 440C? Crucible turns out powdered and regular 154 and as a foundry they seem to be a very reliable, consistent (I always worry about the upstream supply chain - who makes the ingots, is it a brand or a formula - the knife makers themselves seem pretty good this decade).

I wonder if the new CPM-Magnacut would do a good job for a stainless esee. It is really tough especially at lower Hrc. It is also nearly rust proof, with similar sharpening and edge retention to S35v

Love the Loyalty to their customers, the honest transparency and integrity of ESEE. It shows they want to develop and hone their great products through testing and want to take their costumers along for the ride.

I have the esee 6 and esee 3. I’ve beat the crap out of the 6 and it’s by far the toughest knife I own. I keep the 6 in my truck I can always depend on it. I carry the 3 inverted on my belt and it makes one awesome steak knife!

Im s glad, that you stand by your knives and talk abou the fact that we do need to use the right tool for the right job. I have an izula and esee 3 mil, and i do use them but never for firewood. For those i have my GBs and Hb axes.I do have a great variety of knives and brands but none come with warranty like ESEE.

I wish I had a picture of my junglas battoning a knotty piece of hedge! Looked like a boomerang! Sprung back true after the fact and its still my most used knife after 8-10 years! Had a wood stove for primary heat and used my junglas to process all my kindling and small logs. 10hrs +- of use per week for years! It’s literally an extension of my arm at this point. I’m confident buying an esee 3 in s35vn, because I will never use it to batton or pry… I already have a tool for that 👍

If you guys make a PR4 in S35VN I promise I'll buy it!

Love my AGK. 1095 serves me just fine, and is easy to touch up.

I know I'm a couple days late to comment, but would like to add my two cents. I love what you do with 1095 and no nonsense, hard use knives. I own the 4, 6, PR 4, izula, and two izula2's. The izula2's get used the most and I don't baby them. I know you have gotten an earful about 3v and I agree to a degree. I'm around alot of horses and livestock where conditions can get pretty corrosive. An izula 2 in 3v would find a welcome home with me because it's not only tough, but can be almost stainless.

I don't own any ESEE knives right now, but I really appreciate you doing this video. I hear people getting down on 1095 and raving about "super steels" all the time. I don't know about all the high end stuff out there, but I do know that I've never had one of my 1095 knives let me down, no matter the abuse. As far as edge retention goes, it seems like this is primarily a concern from people who don't know how to sharpen and maintain a blade or don't think they should have to. Thanks!

S35vn is good. But man I hope 3v comes in the near future. A 3 in 3v would be the perfect edc and outdoor knife. 3v holds a edge well & is not difficult to sharpen or maintain. At all. Also don’t rust as easy as other “tool steel” I hope you guys do some serious looking into 3v. Fingers crossed!

Loved the large essentials survival tin. Good to know the lil esse in that tin is covered.

I bought an Esee Laser Strike and put it to the test last summer working at a summer camp. I couldn't seem to break the thing in all the batoning and abuse I put it through. Great knife, maybe some day I'll be able to use the warranty.

I love s35v for a folder but I can’t sharpen it as effectively out in the field. My esse 6 has never been hard to keep shaving sharp despite using it like a miniature machete. Every tool has an ideal steel don’t try to be what your not. No one wants a cpm steel in an axe head.

Sweet blades. I currently own 3 awesome Esee products. My question is, would these S35vn blades do well for game prep - like skinning deer or smaller game? I'd like to have somthing less prone to rust as well as somthing that stays sharp for a long period of time. Other than that, I've allways liked Esee and will continue to buy your products. Some of the best in the knife business, and you cant beat the Warranty that's forsure. Thanks for the update on the new products guys. Look forward to owning more and making some videos of me using them..lol

I don't know what people wrote in their comments. But if I think of a 'premium steel' with good edge retention and excellent toughness, CPM 3V would be the first steel that came to my mind. As I'm not a premium steel nerd, I'm fine with 1095 for knives designed for hard use. But would like to see you try out 80CrV2 too. It's a very tough carbon steel. It's not as flexible as 1095 but still hard to break. It's even more resistant to shock than 1095 and holds an edge significantly longer. Probably the wrong steel for nerds but a highly capable alternative to 1095.

How refreshing! Bravo guys.👍 Side note: I have a D2 Zancudo folder that I edc at work (Electrician) have had it for nearly three years, she looks a bit 'weathered' but still performs great, especially with some of the nasty things I use it for. Would replace in a heartbeat if I ever lost her.

The Esee brand is absolutely my favorite knifes in the world in my collection! I own many types of their knives, and accessories! They are just my favorite tools period. I wish I could own everyone of what they make! 😊 Thanks for everything guys, you’re the greatest!

We honestly believe that MANY people know this...but we wanted to do our absolute best to communicate with EVERYONE what our findings were and how to adjust expectations.

So what is Bark River doing with their S35vn that ESEE isn't? It's extremely rare that you ever hear of a Bark River breaking. I've abused 3V just as much as I have 1095. It holds an edge at least twice as long as 1095 and it's semi-stainless. I would love to see an ESEE 3 in 3V. Or better yet, a collaboration between ESEE and Bark River to make an ESEE 3. An ESEE 3 in Elmax or 3V available in Bark River handle materials would be amazing.

I can't speak to what BRK is doing....we don't their process or heat treat....I do know they make great stuff and stand behind it....We feel very confident in our heat treat and feel like to get the most out of S35vn this is the Rockwell we need to be at...because of that...there is a yin/yang in edge retention and toughness.

@@vicarious1028 I own a few barkies myself. Broken a few through testing on purpose. The stress levels between bark river and Esee knives are very similar. 3v is tough, and will outlast 1095 no doubt. But it isn’t enough of a difference to justify $300 vs $120. Not to mention, bark river isn’t exactly known for their customer service. I know Esee will replace my knife if it comes to, but I have yet to break any of my esees that I’ve had over the past 10 years. Performance over looks.

Love your honesty and integrity. I would love to review one of your knives on my KZread channel. And prove some of the naysayers wrong. We are a bunch of air gunners and all of us have EDC it's a must have in our sport and hobby. I actually got into knife collecting from my air gun adventures. Now we all compete to see who gets the next best knife.

This must be the best warranty that we could have ever covered from a product. I was thinking about cold steel made s35 but this video changed my mind to buy the knife from you. Probably not s35 since I would not love to see that my knife is broken when my life is on the line.

Only people who wanted a “higher end” steel were those who don’t use them

I love 1095 but for my small knives I would rather have edge retention. Plus I live in the Netherlands, everything rusts like crazy here with our high humidity.

Not necessarily, some know that different steel has different application. I love my high-end steel kitchen knife (designed by me, crafted by a friend of mine). Crazy sharp, crazy edge retention (crazy not silly like the Myabi, it tested at RC 60). I would never want to field-sharpen that knife though. Though I have to say, the better my sharpening game gets, the less important "edge retention" becomes. But bottom line is, use the right steel for the right job.

You’re painting with a big brush dude. I understand the bomb proof nature of 1095 but you have to understand maybe about 10% of civilian regular knife users would really need that. Most of us will never need to survive with one knife. I live in a city near the Atlantic Ocean, fish and beach camp every season, 1095 is not real suited for that scenario. That being said, the xancudo with hole would make an excellent general purpose camp and saltwater fishing knife. Already ordered mine and can’t wait to use it this upcoming season.

No, 3V is significantly more brittle than S35VN and is challenging to field sharpen. I love and have ran 3V in the woods. But it's far from a first choice. (Also not as corrosion resistant)

@@RandallsAdventureESEE Of course. That is what I said. Having ran both steels, I can attest to the corrosion resistance of 35VN in fresh and salt water. Especially in comparison to 3V. Really 35VN is a remarkable steel for the wilderness and or damp environments.

No its not. I cut cinder block with 3V I made It is way tougher then s35vn.

You can win this argument by tempering the blade and then heat treat only the cutting edge to 60.

I bought this exact knife two weeks ago at Buds Gun Shop in Sevierville TN. It is such a fine knife for its intended purpose. Personally, I would never baton this knife unless my life was on the line. I have other great tools for processing fire wood. I appreciate your honesty in sharing how you broke your knife. I would love to see Esee start offering an O1 or 80CRV2 versions of all their knives.

I’d be curious about cpm-3v. But yes, super steels can be more brittle from what I’ve seen. Thanks for keeping it real ESEE. I love your blades.

This type of transparency is seriously refreshing. Just picked one of these up for EDC (a bit excessive maybe lol) since I'm a fixed blade guy and I like something with a little heft to it. This thing feels amazing. Absolutely love it. Literally 0 complaints about the knife. Would be nice if the the holes in the sheath were square though so I could mount the belt clip sideways for scout or appendix carry. You guys sell a clip for that?

No clips from us but some kydex soft loops will work just fine.

So the Zancudo will have a sheath like the 3? When will the Zancudo be available to buy?

MSU Bird Hunter the Zancudo is slightly larger than the Izula and uses the same clip plate. Should be hitting dealers by the end of Feb.

I have a couple Esse knives and love them. My izula is my main edc; and my 3hm and 6 are my "outdoors" blades of choice. It's pretty awesome that you're offering so many models with g10 handle scales options. I have to admit that i was hyped that you were offering s35vn options for a couple of your knives. Im a huge fan of s35vn as an edc option; but would never choose it in a survival situation (if i actually had a choice). I think it's a great steel for your smaller models such as the izula 1&2 and 3. Those are the knives are use everyday for utility. Thanks for making and standing by amazing products.

I remember that day when I used my Dad's razor to pry open a stuck garbage can lid. You see boys,, there are sharp as hell knives, made for cutting and there are pry bars, made for prying. If you go in the woods to cut up wood for a fire......take an ax.

Everyone dont know when there going to end up in the woods....And I'm not going to carry an axe on my belt everyday....But I will carry a fixed blade..Everyday along with a folder... So if you happen to be the one to slide off the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. You might find it nice and pleasant to have that fixed blade with you so u can start a fire instead of freezing....Theres always a better tool for the job...But theres also that tool that's not the best at everything but can do it all.....

I cut firewood with the ax,, I shoot game with my shotgun,, and I skin the game with my knife. I DON'T cut firewood with my knife,, I DON'T skin game with my ax,, and I Don't cut wood with my shotgun. There is not one tool that does all three well.

Hell I take an axe when I know what I'm going to do....It seems you miss the whole point of batoning,survival Not planning to go hell if I know I'm going to be cutting I'll take a damn Milwaukee 18 volt fuel sawsall,or chain saw...Its about what you have when you need it.....Incase Yes even a forest hatchet is always in my truck...Then what happens when you are riding in your wifes car,with a friend anything..Not urban areas where u actually have to go to town.. Just saying It has a place... Not recommended by none but taught by all for some reason.....

If a deer runs in front of me.....I guess I won't need the shotgun to have a nice roadside meal, while waiting for the tow truck.. Oh did I mention, I also take a cell phone and extra socks when i go in the woods. I see that your not going to be happy til you find a way to make me fail. Why is that?

@@timhallas4275 Actually bud just trying to let u see 2 sides but apparently u are way to stubborn to see where it can be used.....I can go on ,and on with scenarios..Its gonna do know good when you are talking on someone who always has the perfect tool with them all the time for anything they run across... Apparently your not one that's had to make trips through mountains 100's of miles with no signal...and Can change your tire down in a ditch and be on your merry way never mind the snow are the 150' Bank you have to get out off...Because I'm sure you have a 200' winch and a satelite phone...so no not trying to make anyone fail just trying to have one se where it could be useful,that's it..I'm just another of the 90% of idiots where I know where its place is in Survival.......Not planned hunts,camping,hiking trips.....But I will Agree with you I dont like to do it never have.....I also dont like digging a 4'×30" whole with a kbar but been times where didnt have much option......

I'm going to stick with the ESEE ROWEN heat treated 1095, which all of my ESEE knives are made of. 🤘

The honesty is welcome. You guys pretty much said it all. Personally not surprised by the results. Still planning on getting a Xancudo for a fishing/boat belt knife, no need for batoning. If I ever feel my ol standby 1095 stuff is lacking....my steel and strop remedy the feeling in minutes !

Our obligation is to our customers....so we want to make sure that when we bring new products to market we've done our "homework" so they don't have any surprises. Our S35vn knives will last a lifetime as long as you treat them like a knife and not a battering ram. They WILL take some abuse but not like our 1095 blades but they have phenomenal edge retention.

Imagine going backpacking and you end up spending a night around the campfire with these legends.

I don't understand why anyone would want a hard super steel for a survival knife. Pen/folding knife maybe

@Dan Welch yeah people who don't study metallurgy often misinterpret brittleness for hardness. Or too much hardness as brittleness. When hardness and brittleness are two separate phenomena that don't always correlate. In addition to this if I stick a piece of 1095 in a forge at 1000celsius for 2 hours then quench it, it'll have high brittleness and low hardness and low edge retention and a lower ability to have an acute edge angle. Most production grade knives in stainless steels can snap by simply bending it in a vice. On top of all this, not having any taper in a blade will almost certainly lead to a fracture.

@Dan Welch it really depends on overall geometry in most cases. But any super steel with iron or non hardened steel laminate, like the takeda series of hunting knives, won't break. And will most certainly be superior to the knives shown in this video even though they're rat tail and forged.

Iv used my 4 for yrs as my all around camp knife, skinning, butchering, all around tool for out doors, iv scratched it, dented it, chipped it and dulled the hell out of it on bones, digging cat holes etc, yet it's my favorite knife, and I can get it razor sharp on almost any thing, love the forgiveness of the steel, litterally sharpened it on rocks, bone when skinning, stroped it on the hide of my game to touch edge up and kept going. My friends knifes have mostly gone to the side and they have esee's now, also have a izulla and a candiru., the can is my all around pocket knife. And my Izzy is the one in my I'm going hiking for a day or 5 bag, what I'm saying is some times there's no need to reinvent the wheel, a shinny new wheel is nice but some times gives up something to be all shinny. Yep a pun at the new steel, any ways ty for a great product iv loved and used for yrs. God bless. P. S your customer service is awesome. Very cool adding a high-end stainless option. At that blade size, it's impressive the amount of pummeling you had to do to break it. Sounds like most people with a decent head on their shoulders will respect the limits of the knife and either use a different tool for wood processing, or you could easily fashion a wedge if you felt the need to process something bigger that normally necessary. I have no doubt that stainless Esee 3 would baton through a lot of smaller firewood for a long time if you. Many of us avoid batoning through knots as it is because it's more work. I think S35Vn is a good choice and really helps round out the offerings for the hunters or people who live in very wet climates that still want the robust design of an Esee, or just like supporting the brand and stainless is a better option. I don't care for coatings on small knives (anything under "chopper/big knife" size), so having it without a coating is a big plus for me.

Great points and we agree...this knife would be a phenomenal hunting blade!

I feel like the s35vn version will have more of a limited usage capacity. Almost more of just food prep knife or making feather sticks. I would not want to use it for full out bushcrafting simply for the fact it’ll be harder to sharpen in the field and will chip a heck of a lot more than 1095.

this was one reason we wanted to start the conversation with our customers...if you don't baton or use it for HARD USE...we think it will be great...we (and many of our customers) are used to hammering on our knives and we wanted to be really honest about expectations.

@@RandallsAdventureESEE I'm one of those guys that would love the stainless "super steel" but more for the purposes that NY Blade EDC stated. It's the search for the unicorn knife. My kudos for making the ESEE 6, I love the knife and the abuse it will take but I'd love to have an EDC version that I can use at work, in the wet, turn around and take it camping with my Roselli Axe to have a basher and a cutter. I get pangs of guilt every time my 6 or Izula develops rust on that cutting edge.

I stopped using carbon steel for a lot of field knives simply because where I live, in the winter, knives rust inside their sheaths etc. People end up having more problems with sharpening and edge retention with carbon steel than stainless simply because of rust. I strongly recommend m390 which is a steel I've been using for some series of knives and that stuff is simply insane. I used one of my m390 Coldboy series to skin, gut, debone something like 2 sheep and 4 white tail with a week of daily use in between out at my cottage without any sharpening required. A simple strop does a good job of cleaning up the edge too. So carbon steels are slowly loosing their touch. And people who complain about sharpening knives in the field should just stay at home or at McDonald's.

I ran over a E3 with a D6 dozer in the woods , it was a gift from my oldest son , of course it broke . Without me knowing he sent it back , replaced no questions asked , this is a company I love to support with my hard earned money . As far as the Esee’s with 3v , TAKE MY MONEY . Love your products & more importantly customer service!

I have a 6P attached to my hip for hard work but now use the 3 in S35VN for camp work like food prep and anything that requires a fine slicing action. I sharpen my 6P every time I go out but with how good the S35VN holds its edge, I have been on six separate camping trips and still have the factory edge on there. Might need a touch up soon but I find that combo works great.
