I think the Jays would have done the same thing if they could acquire Ohtani using this method. But the Dodgers were schemers. They summoned Kobe Bryant from heaven. Additionally, the Dodgers have been associated with him since he was out of high school. And when Ohtani came to MLB, there was no DH system in the NL. This was not unfair, this was inevitable.

Nobody was pissed when Dodgers didn't have pitchers in the past 2 playoff runs because they where clearing payroll.. plus this is the reason why the team let Seager- Bellinger & both Turners walked ... The Ohtani to Dodgers talk has been going on for years. Remember the Dodgers had an agreement with him Out of High School thanks to scout Dan Evans but he was convinced to turn pro in Japan. Then 6yrs ago he went to Anaheim because National League didn't have a DH.

The Ohtani’s effect is true, but the difference is Arte is all talk and didn’t take advantage of the Ohtani effect. The Dodgers already are taking advantage of, Arte only gave the Angels the big name in LA , but it’s to remove it Arte because us Angel fans and all MLB fans saw the difference in big markets so just change it back to Anaheim Angels or California Angels and sell the team.😊

Ohtani said that there were two reasons why he chose the Dodgers. 1) Medical team. They have the same excellent doctor who did a TJ surgery on him and they have a good rehabilitation program. He felt he would be in a good hand. 3) Despite the fact that the Dodgers went to playoff 10 times for the last 11 years, advanced to WS 3 times and won once,they are not happy about their records and they are hungry to win it all. Ohtani has the same motivation and drive and he thought that the Dodgers was the right team for him. During the press conference, he said that he wasn't sure how long he would be able to play ( as a two-way player), so the team that has the best chance to go to playoff IS very important to him. When he can throw in 2025, he will be 31, so I guess that he will be able to play as a two-way player at a high level for another 4 years or so. If he plays other position, he will be able play for a long time. So, he didn't want to waste his precious time with the Angels. 4 or 5 years will go by quickly and I have a strong feeling that he will bring an A game to each game, inspires his teammates, elevate their play levels and eventually help the Dodgers to achieve their goal. Ohtani is worth more than a $700 contract.

cheap team owners dont deserve owning teams. the dodgers arent paying more than 20 million dollars to ohtani until 2034. the rest of his 680 million dollar contract arent going to start being paid until 2034-2043. thats the fact. the 700 million figure isnt accurate.

It's really silly to be mad at theDodgers for signing Ohtani (someone was going to do it) or the contract considering it was his idea to defer this much money. He actually wanted to defer all of it. Also, the Dodgers will still take a 46 million hit on the CBT number. As for Glasnow, that's just good baseball from a very smart front office. They are obviously sick of losing in the first round and have (finally) decided to go all out. Me, I can't wait to see how it all plays out next year... Go Blue!!! 😁

As I Dodgers fan I hope they are just getting started and get Yamamoto too. Remember they did nothing last off season and none of you complained then. Dodgers have the best ownership in MLB. You know the Blue Jays have an entire country, right? Just watch the fan base in the stadium when they play in any of the Northern cities that includes NY and Boston. They take over Seattle, Detroit, and Minnesota.

32 years passed before the Dodgers won their most recent WS in 2020. We also endured about 12 years of terrible owners with the Fox group followed by Frank McCourt. The current ownership and Andrew Friedman have turned the team around with money to get the best talent and built an impressive organization. Shohei said his contract is with Mark Walter and Andrew Friedman during his introductory conference. Dodgers have done a great job to make players want to join the team.

Would everyone be upset if Toronto or SF signed Ohtani or Mets signed Yamamoto for the same contracts? Their only upset be because it's the Dodgers.

I'm a huge dodgers fan, they are tired of losing. People need to stop, hateing on them, Go LA...

Thanks for not hating, something to keep in mind the Dodgers weren’t always able to spend like this. Plain and simple we got better ownership that has the money to spend and isn’t afraid to do so

Morosi even said that Ohtani’s agent didn’t confirm his whereabouts, then people, including Morosi, just believed he was on the plane. If the reporter only reported the info from the agent, none of this happened.

I am tired of hearing that this contract is 700 million . The pv of the contract is about 460 million . The deferral amount of 46 million is put in a escrow account . So the difference between 48 and the 68 million paid out over the 10 years down the road is funded by interest earned over the next 10 years on the deferral amount of 46 million so really its funded by the player.

What has messed up the dodgers and other teams like Braves and orioles has been the 7 day rest period to let the wildcard be decided.. baseball is an everyday sport. Letting them cool off and let these wildcard teams gain momentum and stay hot has “A LOT” to do with the last 2 years. 2 best teams in NL get knocked out in the first round with no offense.. eliminate this dumb ass playoff series.. if you want to let more teams be in it, then create a bracket like in basket ball.. top 4 teams in the league advance. Period.

in mlb, there's a luxury tax threshold ($237m next year and this threshold trends with expected inflation), and if you go above that you get a penalty or a competitive balance tax (CBT). the salary that goes against the CBT is the average annual value (AAV). basically, how much the player is making during his contract divided by the number of years of his contract. in ohtani's case the AAV is $46m. so that's what he's making each year from a CBT standpoint. i.e he gets $2m now, and gets the remainder or ($46m-$2m) x (1 + 4.5%)^10 = $68m ten years later. when you add the two, and multiply by 10, you get $700m so i interpret how CBT sees things as: $46m per year for ten years = (each year he gets $2m of the $46m) + ($68m is paid out 10 years later but that needs to be detrended 4.5% per year for expected inflation) a lot of people are making a big deal about this, but i don't see an issue with the math mlb is using. i mean you need to detrend the deferrals for expected inflation to determine the value of the player which is essentially what mlb is doing. i guess you can argue about the rate of expected inflation that is being used, but i think you need to pick something.

SF and Toronto offered basically the same Ohtani the same contract. He opted for LA, then asked to have all his salary deferred, which the Dodgers accepted. Also, 680 million is deferred for 10 to 20 years, which lowers the value to approximately 46 million per year (yes, it’s a lot of money). Also, as mentioned by a few others, the Dodgers basically did nothing last year and have cleared the payroll significantly to allow these moves. Even at this point, they are not the highest payroll but no one is talking about that.

Alright, here to put a ribbon on the fun baseball talk we’ve had today. We all know that the Atlanta Braves are America’s Team and Truist Park might as well be the White House. But, there are other teams in the MLB too and I don’t have a problem highlighting them once every blue moon. To wrap today’s conversations, let’s point out the franchise that truly treats baseball the same way people down south treat SEC football…none other than the Los Angeles Dodgers! Might as well make it Dodgers and San Francisco Giants combined because both of these franchises have fans that hate each other like Alabama-Auburn. Takes me back to them 4th Ave days, that house always has Dodger and Giants fans going back and forth all the time, especially when they played each other. Never forget when that guy with his son got beat into a coma at the Giants-Dodgers game. That’s a microcosm of Dodgers-Giants fans relationship. May be one of the most hated rivalries in sports period. Far as the Dodgers, when I was out there, they weren’t that good at the time. The thing I enjoyed most about the Dodgers was watching games listening to Vin Scully. My roommate/ big bro Rion was/still is a huge Dodgers fan and never missed a game ever. We watched all 162 Dodgers games one year. I was neutral but Scully was enough reason to watch a game; his style was unmatched and I don’t know if we’ll ever see another like him. Please stop saying that teams are paying this off-season what they agree to terms of paying over a span of a contract. ownership is supposed to assemble the best team possible. very rich organization and funny thing is, deferrals are perfectly legal. just cus other organizations don’t wanna spend the money isn’t our fault lol also, we have the best farm system in baseball. so i don’t get why people are big mad. they should be mad at their organizations lol

Look, at the end of the day it is what it is, they didn't break any rules. Does it suck for every other team? Of course but look at what the Orioles and Diamondback did this past season with a miniscule payroll. Success isn't guaranteed and I'll be rooting for the underdog which is every other team but the Dodgers for the next 10 years LOL.
