This was just recorded as a Promo. Prince was filming Under The Cherry Moon and WB wanted a video for the next single. Prince hired a theatre and word went out. The preformed America twice as well as a version of Paisley Park as a thank you to the audience. Then went back to directing and acting in his movie.

He was 100% focused on music. He had endless energy, worked constantly and put it all out on the stage. He did a lot of jumping off the stage speakers, piano & different set pieces & almost always in heels, and he ended up with hip problems later. He was in a lot of pain and that's how he ended up on pain pills. He wasn't a recreational drinker or drug taker & people around him weren't allowed to do that stuff, but unfortunately being in a lot of pain ended with him addicted to pain pills, which ended up killing him. It's really sad.

I don't know if anybody's mentioned it, but the band you see here (or anywhere) is strictly for live performances; on most of his studio tracks, Prince played ALL the instruments. As far as recommendations go, check out Prince: Sign O' Times - LIVE - Movie Version (1987); you might want to have lyrics on hand. Also, for a non-music reaction, you know William Shatner, right? Two days ago he put a video on his offical YT channel, "Dear Canadian Open Net Salmon Farmers....", which is very short and very good.

Great performance by Prince & the Revolution! You're right, he and whichever band he was with at the time were like this every single show. Prince was known to be tireless, he's sleep only like 4-5 hours a day & was full of energy. I've seen him take over the bass guitar and keyboards in concerts, as well as the drums. And he wasn't even doing his real fancy dance moves here, he could really do some crazy stuff. Keep up with Prince, thank you!

Prince would do a 1or 2 hour warm up rehearsal before the concert performance that night. Do a 2 to 3 hour concert. Then do a 2 hour after party concert. Rinse and repeat. Sometimes they would just go do studio work after concert to go record something new.

This has been done in Nice, France, in a relatively small venue during the shooting of his second film "Under the cherry moon". A one-time show he did because he was missing being on stage. It was the second time he performed in France, the first one was in a Paris club named "Le Palace" in 1981. BTW, I like the tongue-in-cheek humor of Prince making Lisa Coleman (at the keyboards) wear a Soviet general hat in a song named "America". After all, he also did a song named "Ronnie talk to Russia (before it's too late)" in his "Controversy" album... Oh, and since you're talking about jumpng up and down you gotta check out a live version of "Housequake".

Prince played 27 instruments. The sax was not one of them. He made 45 albums.

Below are the lyrics. Prince has said it's straightforwardly patriotic, and I can see that. This was written just before Gorbachev and Reagan began to thaw out the Cold War. A couple of years before this, Prince had a song called "Ronnie talk to Russia (before it's too late)"--we could use a similar sentiment today before NATO gets in a hot war over effing Ukraine, but I digress. Here he seems to say (the lyrics are great!) that America is flawed, duh, but it's freedom was better than much else out there in the world, especially (this was 1985) communism, and we should work to change things when necessary, but remind ourselves to be grateful for what we do have. I salute this sentiment! The studio version is fire, too. (Prince was also a Jehovah's Witness, a sect that was quite oppressed in many communist countries, and this may come into play when considering his staunch opposition to that system.) "America" Yeah Peace! Aristocrats on a mountain climb Making money, losing time Communism is just a word But if the government turn over It'll be the only word that's heard America, America God shed his grace on thee America, America Keep the children free Little sister making minimum wage Living in a 1-room jungle-monkey cage Can't get over, she's almost dead She may not be in the black But she's happy she ain't in the red America, America God shed his grace on thee America, America Keep the children free Freedom Love Joy Peace Jimmy Nothing never went 2 school They made him pledge allegiance He said it wasn't cool Nothing made Jimmy proud Now Jimmy lives on a mushroom cloud America, America God shed his grace on thee America, America Keep the children free America, America God shed his grace on thee America, America Keep the children free Freedom Love Joy Peace Boom, boom, boom, boom The bomb go Boom, boom, boom, boom The bomb go boom. Teacher, why won't Jimmy pledge allegiance?
