The Endless Nightmare Of Loris Karius
Спорт
One game. That’s all it takes to completely change the trajectory of a football career. For some, like Germany's 2014 World Cup hero Mario Götze, one game can propel you to superstardom. But there are others who aren't so lucky, and for fellow German Loris Karius, it took just one traumatic game for his promising career to crash and burn right before his eyes...

Tbf, this video brilliantly “highlights” exactly what was still in my memory in the events leading up to that final. The one where the ball slices through his hands and onto the crossbar, among many other comedic errors to goals. So, I was never at ease when he was number 1, and that final just sums everything up. I dont rate Mignolet at all, but Karius was another level of comedy. Thats how my memory of him was like.

He was elbowed by his left eye it knocked his vision out, anyone who has been hit hard enough near the eye knows how hard it is to play with. Same thing happened to me in a hockey game but with a knee, it wipes out your vision on that side, gives you double vision, you are so vulnerable. I didn't realise someone was pressing me until i saw them in my right eye, same thing would've happened with karius and the benzema goal. Then add on the effects of concussion, double vision from the collision then explains the bale mishandle. If you are still ignorant, try getting hit hard enough near the eye to knock your vision out, and play a game with that, you cant.

The big problem that actually haunts me about this situation as a Liverpool fan is, WHY did we keep Simon (useless) Mignolet for so long, 1yr after Klopp took over he finally got the message and went to Mainz to get Karius (we could have had Bernd Leno or Ter-Stegen!!!! who were both available at the time but never mind) Had Mignolet been ditched under the end of Rogers tenure and certainly early in Klopps, then we would never have heard of Lorius Karius . As it is, the bloke was clearly out of his depth in the first few weeks with Klopp saying 'He's not ready' He was NEVER ready because he was MILES off being a top keeper for a major club. Very unlucky but could have easily been avoided had Klopp listened when he arrived to the criticism Mignolet was already getting for poor performances. We only bought him on the strength that he had stopped a million shots for Sunderland on their way to relegation. WHY did we get rid of Reina, stupid decision.

I don't think Karius was particularly good for Liverpool prior to the CL final. He was OK, but not the level of keeper you want for a club as ambitious as Liverpool. Both Alisson and Kelleher are miles better than Karius ever was. I am sorry for him that he had such a nightmare evening against Real Madrid, but the plan was even before the final to find an upgrade, a clear number 1 keeper.
The worst part is, if the ref had done his job in Kyiv, Ramos would have already been sitting under the shower and Karius likely wouldn't have suffered the concussion. Whether Liverpool would've gone on to win the game is hard to say, but it wouldn't have been blamed on Karius.

He played another 14 minutes before the ref noticed that he was walking around disorientated and mainly spoke gibberish. He even said he doesn't actually have any memory from the game anymore. The idea that Karius in that condition should nonetheless be blamed for his lapse of rational decision making is insane.

If only he just told klopp he had concussion in the damn first place!
Im glad that you show his poor form before the final. I was sick to the back of my teeth in telling others that he has actually awful. Nobody believed me! Dont pretend you mdid.. nobody agreed. Nobody. everyone thought he was amazing.
I feel really sorry for the guy, life can be so fucking hard, but we all are more than our mistakes, which are human
Hard not to feel bad for the guy at this point.
I watched that game with my dad in Kyiv when liverpool lost I was crying my shit off
I hope Loris Karius will return!

Thought I was watching ALEXANDER there 😂
If he subbed himself off, I genuinely don't think we would of bought Alison, or at least as fast as we did afterwards, he wasn't too bad until that moment
damn, did not realize Karius was only 24 in that UCL final
Karius was a ticking timebomb. He had absolutely no business being a senior player at a club like Liverpool and was only no. 1 because Mignolet was also out of his depth and suffering a crisis in confidence. Karius was a poor goalkeeper at the top level, let in far more soft goals than expected in the 3 quarters of a season he had been no.1 to that point, without showing any real outstanding attributes to make up for it. He was all unshakeable ego, no focus and average talent. But he had this bravado which can sometimes trick managers into thinking they're worth investing in, whereas Mignolet seemed to be falling apart with stress and lack of self belief. Two bad options to start in goal in a CL final and Mignolet would have been just as likely to let Liverpool down and become a footballing punchline. They had Danny Ward on the books then as well, which just doesn't bear thinking about. The goalkeeper coaching and recruitment at Liverpool was clearly completely misguided at that time. Karius seems to have lost that bravado and ego now and accepted the narrative, trying to maximise what he can earn as a career backup. He had time on his side but the 2 subsequent loan spells at Besiktas and Union Berlin seem to have set back his chance for redemption a long way. At Besiktas he was 1st choice but was mostly awful for them, ending up a hate figure for the fans and used as a scapegoat by the management. At Union Berlin, a club the size he should have expected to start regularly for, he never really even got a look in. And where should he go from there? Down to 2. Bundesliga where he'd really have to knuckle down and shed his fantasies of generational greatness, hoping that if he can manage 2 or 3 solid seasons Mainz might take him back? Why do that when you can just earn £50k+ per week at Newcastle and rarely having to deal with the stress and reality check of actually having to play elite level football.
Very sad story.
i'm not a Liverpool fan (i support Tottenham), but i hope to see Loris Karius thrive one day. GK can have longer careers than other positions, so Karius still has time left - as Karius is 30 years old currently in 2024.

Also a Tottenham fan but I really wish he succeeds as well. Funny how other club's fans want the best for him and not Liverpool's lmao.
I have seen clips of many great keepers make terrible mistakes. It seems nobody is immune. But that does not mean that some are not generally more reliable than others.
Such a shame he had good potential
I think mentality and emotional control / stoicism is vital for success in any field. Sadly, one hit took him out
Professional goalkeepers must watch what’s happened to Karius and be terrified it could happen to them
When you lose a game, you can always blame it on the Goalkeeper.
I wonder if the ones who ridiculed him online are the same who posted sad songs for Enke ?
he was out on loan for my team Beşiktaş. Such simple mistakes he would make. Us fans dumbed him "armless"... :)
I wish bro the best and hope he proves all the doubters wrong 🤷♂️
2014 cup hero my friend
Ramos being a poison once more
There are top footballers including Cristiano Ronaldo who miss season defining penalities but get over it and the mistakes are mostly forgotten a season or two later...But for Karius digital media ruined him by specifically not burying the ghost of past
Never understood why Simon Mignolet was benched in that game for Karius... Rumours said that he had the same agent as Jurgen Klopp. Whatever must have been a nightmare for the youngster...
I’ve only ever played American football, but I suffered a bad concussion during a game. Even after two a day practices for months I didn’t know which side to line up on the hall. I was a tight end and kept trying to line up as wide receiver and on defense. I even got into a fight in the sidelines with a guy who said hey to me and wound up breaking his leg. Don’t remember any of it. When I was at the doctor I thought it was Wednesday and it was a Friday. I could not imagine playing at the highest level of football against freaking Madrid as a goalkeeper which requires split second decisions and full field awareness. They said his concussion was an “explanation, not an excuse” I’d sure as heck like to know what an excuse would be. Death?
As a Manchester United fan I thought he was excellent against us in the final, he had to deal with 10 shots on target, it was the midfield and defense that let him down.
It is really sad if his downfall was almost all due to that concussion in the Madrid game. Really makes you wonder if those mistakes happen without that, I don’t think they do
What did Mario Goetze do in the 2010 Wordl Cup? Unless I’m mistaken he wasn’t even on the squad.
The concussion excuse would carry more wieght if Karius hadn't shown simliar ineptitude on several occassions prior to the UCL final. As it stands it appears to be a well meaning story concocted in an effort to take pressure, abuse and even death threats(🤦♂) off Karius. The guy would be best advised to take a No1 place at a lower league club to game regular game time and get his confidence back.
Actually Karius quite an handsome man
He'll forever walk alone
nice
I don’t think it was just one game, seems like repeated failures over the course of many games that led him to where he is. In fact, the concussion was a perfect excuse, but he didn’t perform well even after so I think he’s not an elite player (like neuer) and probably never was, besides his one good season in Bundesliga. He’s been able to make a career for himself and make good money and have a life many would dream to have. He should be grateful and proud and maybe from there he will be able to play even better, if he is driven
I played in goal until I was 60 years old in Sunday leagues. We lost my last game 4-0 and I played what I considered a great game, even the ref said "good game Gordon" after I made a save similer ( if only a little similer) to Banks save in The World Cup. We could have lost 10 nothing. But it means nothing when you lose and nobody cares lol. Such is the life of a goalkeeper.
and liverpool fans proudly say you will never walk alone. Hmmm......
Gerrard : id rather go to hell than be in purgatory
Poor guy.. Probably developed PTSD because of that night
That Dude is free from any talent, he played about 200 Football matches in the last 14 years 😳
