That’s what many women do, doesn’t matter how long you’re married for. Your status or frame is questioned, her attraction for you is conditional based on how she can respect you. If she can’t she will leave.

When I was watching this episode and they showed the PM coming onto the set and everyone in the bar was cheering, it was one of the first and only times I actually felt disgusted. I literally scorned at every person I saw laughing in the bar. I thought I was just bein a buzzkill but I guess a lot of us can sympathize with someone being publicly humiliated.

Just a random rant... maybe someone else can relate? The wife in this episode really REALLY annoyed me. Throughout the whole thing she was acting so selfish, she never once showed any concern, support, or love for her husband or the princess hostage for that matter. Instead she was more concerned about what people were saying about them on social media.... seeking that her husband comfort HER and reassure HER instead of the other way around. So, in the end when I saw her go up the stairs like that, I muttered "bitch." What was he supposed to do in that situation given the circumstances? The one lady even said that if the PM refused, no one could guarantee his safety OR that of his family. So, at that point, he was not only trying to save the princess, but also his family from potentially fatal public retaliation. So all in all, he made the right choice and his wife should have been more supportive and appreciative of that sacrifice. I understand that the ramifications of that event would have been very difficult as a couple to work through, but given enough time, love, and patience it would have been possible. So idk, but that element of the story just really struck a nerve with me.

Yeah I pretty much said the same thing at the end but no woman could ever imagine that the "worse" part of the marriage vows would be her husband fucking a pig on live TV. With that said I understand why the writers went in this direction with the wife, to further create sympathy for the Prime Minister and to show that the human reaction from loved ones is not always supportive.

I agree with you. Him HAVING to have sexual intercourse with a pig makes it seem like he was being raped. Not by the pig of course but by the person who kidnapped the princess. It reminds me of cases where the person who has been raped lets the rape happen without fighting back for fear of their life and safety if the rapist has a weapon of some sort. He is left traumatized and the wife does nothing to support him. I understand not being able to see him in the same light as you did before but she didn't have to be such a bitch about it.

Omg, I never thought someone could think like me in this aspect. It really annoy me how the wife was so frustrate and acting like that when the one doing all the disgusting thing was him. I never knew why she was so piss off, when, in the end, her husband save the life of the princess on the cost of HIS reputation, not hers. It's stupid, because, all the people that saw the broadcast was like "Oh, poor man" "He's a hero" and things like that, but she was acting like she was the most damaged here. So selfish and stupid. When all the people saw her husband as a hero, she just was mad at him for doing what he had to do.

Had the opposite effect for me and I have watched very little Black Mirror since. I felt no immersion in the story because I wouldn’t be the kind of person to want to observe something like that. I don’t have that social media driven urge to perpetuate indecency or blackmail/torture of another person and it kind of shocks me that so many people do have that drive. I found the whole episode impossible to follow knowing I wouldn’t follow it in real life; especially when the stories are supposed to echo real world possibilities. I watched Hated in the Nation after it was recommended and that episode was much better than this one. I still wouldn’t have ever used the “DeathTo” hashtag but I found it easier to accept that a lot of people would use it, whereas, I struggle to accept that people would watch what is effectively broadcasted TV bestiality. Why would anyone choose to watch that??

I think that scene is the true test of how enslaved people will be to a screen (meaning those who watched it are part of the sheep-like crowd). I agree. WHY THIS. If they wanted people to get the gist of what this show centers on, they shouldn't have come strong. Because I just watched this earlier for the first time, and I was just baffled and shocked. I was the same as before watching it, with no clue what it's about, but now horrified and barely functioning. But besides all that, this was a REALLY great episode. The fact that it managed to keep me on the edge of my seat, with my heart pumping was extraordinary! And the Prime Minister's slow descent from denial, insanity and into bitter acceptance was such a rollercoaster. I really enjoyed his acting. I'll probably check out the rest, but now... I feel like throwing up. :D

What I love about "Black Mirror" is that while watching the show, you start wondering what you would do if you were in the character's shoes. And it turns out you're not exactly sure what your reaction would be in the face of adversity. This TV series raises so many questions we wouldn't be able to answer straightaway... I would say binge-watching "Black Mirror" might be a little harmful to your brain as after seeing just one episode, you need some time to chew it over.

A key aspect is the artist's motivation for this act. During the transition from the couple's bed to the first time we see the newsroom (about 8:15 in) there is a voiceover talking about how his show at the Tate has been closed three weeks early - presumably for indecency of some sort. This whole scenario was designed to show that the public is far more indecent than his art show ever was. And by releasing the princess early enough to avoid the whole horrid spectacle, he demonstrated that the indecency was pervasive in their society.

I know why, it's because most of us have been conditioned to not even recognise individuals from that species (or in fact most othe species but especially these we commonly use and abuse) as 'individuals' aka someone with thoughts and feelings and that truly terrifies me. If we can be made so ignorant to others plight, we are safe from nothing and could be made to behave in any harmful way imaginable and it's so so easy to facilitate.

In one of the later episodes (I don't remember which, but I can look into it), I thought there was another UKN Easter egg that says the prime minister was caught sneaking into the zoo "again", and I had hoped you might mention that. The implications of the long-lasting psychological effect that kind of humiliation has on him are palpable, and it made me even more sick just confronted with just the suggestion of his downward spiral. Absolutely the best pilot for the series.

Unpopular opinion: if you were so disgusted by the broadcast scene that you fast-forwarded through it, congratulations: you would have been one of many who would have found the princess in time. I don't think it takes that much self-control to refrain from watching bestiality (pretend or otherwise). This is proof that our society is NOT so degraded that something like this could actually happen.

I see lots of comments hating on the wife and while I do feel what she did was wrong, I do understand why she did it. She knew that her husband had no choice but to do it, but seeing your significant other do something so disgusting, whether forced to or not, will inevitably lead to loss of sexual attraction. So before y'all start antagonizing people on this show, you gotta put yourself in their shoes, cuz this entire show is about the grayness of morality

If they ever were intimate again i wouldn’t doubt that’s all she would think of during

Well it’s not about sexual attraction. Believe it or not sex is not a must have ingredient for a relationship. If it were so then old couples or couples where one of the partner has some kind of disability that prevents them from having sex will not exist. It’s the empathy she was lacking. If it were my husband, I probably wouldn’t have been able to have sex with him again for a long time at least but sure as hell I would’ve been by his side, provided him immense moral support and wouldn’t have made this about me.

How the hell did an artist beat 2 bodyguards? In the episode, it said "heavy sedative, close range, each with a single puncture wound". Well, he's an artist, not a professional assassin. It's already hard to approach the princess and her bodyguards without alerting them, let alone sting 2 trained men at once with sedative. It said clearly "CLOSE RANGE", not shooting poison dart from distance like Teemo. The fact that 2 bodyguards were defeated like the way the movie described made us and the PM gang think that there was an organization behind all of these. Turn out it's a plot twist, a POOR plot twist. An artist who is passionate enough to kill himself for his art, is he passionate enough to train himself to become an efficient assassin? X DOUBT.

Re-watching this episode in 2021. I feel like the events of this episode mark the beginning of the dystopia. I have a theory that the artist who hangs himself, Carlton Bloom, was massively clued into the cultural zeitgeist. He knew the mass media addiction/consumption was coming, he did this because he wanted people to wake up. I think he forced everyone to watch their prime minister perform a disgusting act on TV so they would question their addiction to media. He told them exactly what they were going to see, and everyone tuned in anyway expecting to have a good time. The final shots of everyone realising how disgusting the images they’re watching confirms this for me. Have you also noticed that he is writing a suicide note or manifesto at the end, but in the epilogue they never talk about what the artist’s intent was? The media’s job was to spin this in a positive light, and sure enough the prime minister’s approval rating is up. The other episodes in this season show that the artist failed in his mission, as they’re about people who physically can’t look away from screens.

I love how all the beauty of this pilot episodes resides in the fact that if people hadn't been so rotten to the core, so corrupted, so not innocent and hadn't wanted to watch the PM in the act, they could have quickly found the girl laying on the bridge which could have stopped it but no, people were too busy watching their screens. The message of the artist is literally that screens desensitized us so much, that we're capable of letting that sort of thing happen.

It was the first episode of Black Mirror I ever watched, and I warn people about this episode when I tell them they should watch Black Mirror.
