I hope his heirs follow Robert Jordan's widow's example and find another Brandon Sanderson to finish the series, but it's unlikely to turn out as well as Wheel of Time. When he realized he was likely to died of an altra-rare blood disease before he could finish it, Jordan reportedly started mapping out the rest of the series, prepared a slew of notes, and wrote key scenes, including the final chapter of the series. He did all of that while actively dying. I seriously doubt GRRM will do the same for ASOIAF because that would require he have a clue where the series is going and how it ends. Hopefully he has enough of his world building documented that someone can step in and at least create a plausible ending, even if it isn't GRRM's ending.

You can bet that if the Dunk and Egg TV series is a hit George will quickly shift his focus on writing more in that series. It's clear the last thing he wants to do is finish the original series. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if he has the next Dunk and Egg novella already written.

Back then, when I was a devout member of the German ASoIaF-community and we were in London to see George (I think it was 2012?), he talked about writing Dunk and Egg up to the North to Winterfell and the two of them being in Dorne. I believe he skipped Dorne but Winterfell and the Starks could still be a possibility.

Winds of winter isn’t coming thats just a fact but I don’t think he’ll even be able to get any dunk and egg novellas out in time for that show either. He’s literally going to do it again, let another show get ahead of his books. He really doesn’t learn his lesson at all. The man is insane.

I doubt he'll ever finish any of the books at this point.

Duncan and Egg are really good reads. Winds is never coming out from George. Perhaps after he dies someone will edit what he has written and publish it.

He’s said many times he pinned himself into a corner with how to end game of thrones that he truly doesn’t know what to write to tie it the ending. The fact that he was doing side story writing is because he has writers block on the main story. He’s old fat and rich who hasn’t finished writing the next book over the last 15 or whatever years. He’s never finishing it let’s just accept it.

The Dunk and Egg series would be perfect to engage with a writing partner. I get not wanting to do that with ASOIAF but for that more episodic and adventurous series getting a talented cowriter would be perfect

Just imagine how nicely things would've fallen into place if he could just finish writing in time.

I've tried reading every other GRR story besides Thrones. Including Sworn Sword and the rest of them. Some are fair, some are awful, none of them are in the same class as Thrones by a long shot. Everything he's written besides song of ice and fire is pure mediocrity. When you develop them into a TV show, the TV show is pure mediocrity. HOT D was a fair effort but who literally GAF about Targaryens? Their story is not interesting, except for the dragons, it's completely forgettable.

the "no one is safe" rule has been out of the window since about season 5 or something.

I genuinely think he doesn't know HOW to finish a song of ice and fire and I think it's because he's created to many plotlines and instead of closing them his mind just keeps making more. I once read somewhere that a dream of spring could actually end up being 2 books. He's right when he says he's like a gardener, he's a gardener with an infinite amount of land that he keeps expanding into instead of fencing it and being like now I have to actually tend to the garden that I've already created. I definitely think that both the show and book fan's strong reaction to the ending of GOT also has something to do with him being unable to conclude his story because amongst all those lies there were some specks of truth spinkled in (e.g. Bran becomes king). Also hink him waiting this long has added to the pressure because how much fans expect - the fact that there are fan theories that have resulted in people making videos spanning 20+ hours tells you that much. So in conclusion, what's keeping him from finishing the books? 1. wanting to expand the plot when now is the time to bring it all together 2. too much ground to cover in terms of addressing and concluding already existing plotlines 3. increased expectation/ hype from the fandom on the actual ending of the books from having to wait 10+ years leading to added pressure. I think Winds of Winter is his big hurdle, if he's able to actually finish it and put it out there (and people like it) then I think he will be able to write spring faster. As a procrastinator myself, there's a sort of guilt that comes from delaying the work you knew had to be finished already which then results in you procrastinating even more.

Completely agree. People forget that GRRM himself said when he writes, he doesn’t do an ending because it makes him lose interest and creative flow because he ends up restricting his creative process to the point that he stops writing. He gave GOT his ending and now has backed himself into a corner as he saw the backlash and can’t change it without causing contractual issues with HBO as he has promised that the book ending will be the same as the show. I suspect he is dragging his feet because he hopes the vitriol will die down by the time his last book comes out and he can figure out how to tweak things to make the ending more palatable.

Tbf he did say he knew what he would write the next DandE novel about and it was supposed to be based at winterfell. He's even dropped some hints in brans visions. So I think he'll write it pretty quickly but there's probably some hints about the main storyline in the novellas

I believe his vision for game of thrones ending was the same as how to show ended but with the backlash of the show he scared to admit it and cant think of new ending so he stuck in

Nah, because George will actually write it well with proper build up if his ending is the same. But I'm certain Georges ending isn't identical, because D&D made up Arya killing the Night King etc.

Even with the same ending, he would know how to execute it. I don’t think he envisioned Arya killing the NK, nor Jaime and Cersei dying together happily? I do think he probably had Bran as the King, which many people hated as well. But with Bran, I think it’s more about how poorly he was written in the last 2 seasons. I don’t mind him being King if it’s done right.

Dunk and Egg have the luxary of being able to jump around in time. It starts when Egg is a child and ends with him a man grown. Maybe George doesn't "finish" Dunk and Egg. But we can at least tell the writers what happened at Summerhall if they want to end if that way.

@@kjellduteweert9262 exactly. It would be all that different from how house of the dragon is being developed. They have the broad strokes, they would just need to fill in the details. Also, they could just end the show after 2 or 3 seasons. They don't have to move past the written material.

We know of at least 2 novellas that exist in some form: The Village Hero which is likely to be about events of Pennytree & how it became a royal fief. It exists on the border of Stone Hedge & Raventree hall lands for context (Bracken & Blackwood disputed area). The other is The She Wolves of Winterfell - a working title but dealing with a succession crisis in the North when multiple Stark lords have died in rapid succession.

George has started a 4th novela Shewolves of Winterfell.

I'm totally keeping the faith in George. Alot going on and hid dreams of dunk n egg are coming together and truly i cannot wait...want winds of winter as well however this is his dream from 50+ yrs ago ❤

Worst part is that there are still two books left for the song of ice and fire. Winds of Winter is just the first. He needs to write a whole book after. He probably wont make it

Not to mention that there are no dragons or direwolves in the Dunk and Egg series, mostly about medieval knights, no magic, which means the show is significantly cheaper to make and was therefore chosen over other stories, like the GOT sequel for instance they cancelled.

I hope he lives long enough to finish what he would like. I'm scared to think of it too much.

I can't believe this guy :( I do think we will get Winds of Winter within the next year or two but feeling more and more like Dreams of Spring is something that will never come out or someone else will have to write it. Also I have a feeling that fan reception to Winds of Winter will be very mixed even if it is a good book, as the expectations are just through the roof at this point. (probably part of the reason he's taking so long).

Sometimes when you're working on something and get into a rut, working on something else for a while helps you when you go back to the first project. Maybe he should work on some Dunk and Egg novellas to give his mind a break from Winds of Winter and when he goes back he might see the path he needs to take.

I’m currently on a Storm of Swords and I’m excited to “finish” the books, however it weighs on me that there may not be a prize at the end and Gurm may never finish. Sad.

We just need to accept the fact that Winds of Winter is just a pipe dream..

There are so many other books, fantasy or not, that are great, you guys should explore your horizons. This channel, for example, could give a chance and make content related to other authors.

Perhaps his books 6 and 7 are nearly along the line as the series ending. And GRRM saw how people hated hated that. I hope I'm wrong and some days we'd have the complete series, whether by George or another author.

HBO needs to eff off with the speed running of the content. There's no reason for why they kept cutting down episode length and coverage. More and more each season.

I have this feeling that that Words of Wisdom post he did back in March was saying more than it did at first glance

The best, and most GRRM thing, that could happen is that he’s already written WoW and ADoS and they’ll be published posthumously to avoid any backlash, because they diverge significantly from the TV show.

I've had a theory for a long time he's got the whole asoif done but it won't release until after his passing. That way he doesn't have to hear a word of backlash of the ending.

He should give his notes to the publisher and let a ghostwriter finish his Song of Ice and Fire story.

I wonder if the pressure has just been too much and he just keeps rewriting sections over and over again, never happy with the plot?

I’m convinced that he’ll never finish ASOIAF because then it’ll go down in history as his “great unfinished work” and he doesn’t risk fumbling the ending and leaving people disappointed.

At least with the jon snow story, it would be straightforward without worrying about an ending. Let's face it. The writer is 75 years old yeah he a great writer, but he slowed down as he aged.
