love this series. For me the most heartbreaking moment is when Kendall wants to come clean to her mom about the murder and she leaves home early without a goodbye to avoid having a meaningful conversation with her son. She is THE onion 🤪

Kendall is clearly bipolar and throughout the majority of season 3 was in mania, which (to no surprise) was followed by depression. He's actions made sense if you realize this is why he acted the way he did. He's an amazing actor and I think this was my favorite season so far!

Tom has been tolerating ridicule and humiliation episode after episode right from the season 1. It was only a matter of time that he would bite back and he did and also took Greg under his wing. He asked Greg who has ever looked after him in this fucking family and he himself also got the answer. No one. One episode ago Shiv said Tom is out of her league and now the table has turned. Am proud of Tom. He has the most beautiful character arc this season and what can I say about Matthew Macfadyen! He is a phenomenal actor.

It’s a great performance, but Tom is a total scumbag to everyone underneath him and has been grasping his way up the ladder using people as furniture 😱. His love of Shiv is his only redeeming characteristic, but Shiv like all the kids is incredibly damaged. I don’t think any of them can have healthy relationships 🥺.

Yeah I see the whole episode as a spiritual rebirth for Kendall. Death (near) + Water baptism (drowning/submersion in the pool) + confession of sins (finally sharing what happened with siblings) + love (finally getting the support and embrace from siblings) = rebirth I imagine next season we will see a “new” Kendall, who is now prepared to lead his siblings in their fight against their father.

She has treated him worse with every season, it all came to a head with Tom at the end of season 2 when they went to that beach and he questioned her wanting to have an open marriage on their wedding night. As for season 3, it was clear he had finally had enough. She had it coming

Watching Kendall near the end of Season 3 was really heartbreaking. From his downward spiral into substance abuse, realizing his kids have been neglected, admitting to killing the waiter at Shiv's wedding, and worst of all, he tried killing himself and his father couldn't give a shit about it. I hope it really turns around and he comes out on top with his siblings.

In the end Tom realizes his only real family in this group is Greg. Greg - looking like a little kid - smiles happily at Tom's offer, bursts out with "Who needs a soul anyway? Souls are boring. Boo Souls." I love those two. Also, Roman on his knees being comforted by Kendall mirrors his comforting Kendall on his knees hours before. And another also - Shiv toasts her mother;s marriage with water and at the end is oddly clawing at her stomach when she falls apart after seeing that Tom was the one who betrayed her. Was she preggers already?

I just pictured next season Shiv and someone else having an accident, maybe Roman. Shiv was injured (not as much as Roman) but at least she is awake now, so Kendall goes to the clinic and finds Shiv , angry and then in tears , she reveals she was pregnant and that doctors said she just lost the baby. Kendall offers calling Tom but Shiv says “Don’t” and the scene ends with Shiv crying in Kendall’s shoulders devastated. I know the writers will do a 1000 times better scene but just a thought

I think Greg has played the game the best, he’s observed both sides cautiously and chosen his allies even more wisely throughout the seasons . Now that he’s with Tom he’s gunning for a position of power that the kids previously had with Logan, and even more so if he makes the connection with the Duchess of Luxembourg. He’s learned what he needs to do to become a power player and is going all out against the kids with Tom next season.

Wrong. He lost his grandfather's support and his hundreds of millions of dollars. He hasn't played the game he's been played. He almost went to jail! He's constantly threatened by Tom, Kendall, his grandfather, Logan, Roman etc. He made a meme of himself while testifying before congress. He's literally the court jester. He hasn't learned anything, he's just repeating the bad habits of the people controlling him and while doing so he's becoming like them.

He is most impressive to me because of how he started. Tom was the opposite until his very last decision/betrayal. For now anyway. And even more, the kids are just rock bottom.

Is it just me, or we are about to witness a drastic change in Kendall along with other sibs? I feel like Kendall is now done dealing with all the things holding him down, he hit rock bottom, and now we are about to see him rise back to glory.

“Climate said I was going down,” says Logan. “Climate said I should just step aside. I guess I’m a climate denier.” Damn the way Logan delivered that line was one of the coldest double entendres in TV history insults.

Tbh I don’t feel bad for any of them except for Kendal. Everyone should have a listened to him season 2 and 3. They could have taken over several times had they just listened to him. Tom included.

I said the same thing. Felt bad for Ken. He’s been trying to tell them, but they wouldn’t listen. There was even a part during the scene when the camera is on Ken, and he’s looking at Roman and Shiv as to say “see what I’ve been trying to tell you”

I oscillate between feeling bad for Ken and remembering how despicable he is too. Like remember when he fucked those art girls whole career because he didn’t get his way? And he’s just a fucking douche half the time. The birthday party? Like I feel for all of them, considering who their parents are. But they all make they’re own awful choices too.

This is my rant for Connor because he’s actually my favorite. Connor is obviously the most neglected by his entire family. His father gives him no mind, his siblings treat him like shit even though he loves them, and despite him being the eldest everyone looks down on him. His relationship with Willa at first was just a desperate attempt to be loved. But if you watch Connor move you can see he actually has the qualities in buisness his siblings lack. His relationship with Willa becomes more and more real and healthy as the days pass. And as his siblings scrap with each other he stays aside to set his own prospects up. Succession is all about the “losers” who are actually more powerful than you realize. It’s the story of Greg, Tom, and Connors rise up the ranks.

Check out the scene when Logan and Kendall meet with Adrien Brody at the beach and Logan has to say he believes in Kendall and talks about how he loves him. And it's all a show. It's the one thing Ken needs to hear from his dad, but the old battleax can only say it as a play with an investor. The 48 seconds of brutal silence after the exchange speaks volumes.

Yeah I mean there’s like 20 other instances in the show where the kids and Logan all publicly show affection for one another. It just amplifies how fake they all are yet it also shows how capable they all are of turning on a switch and being able to “act” like they all love and care about each other.

Yeah. As shitty as they all are, Logan in my eyes is an even bigger pos so I can’t help but root for them to take the old man down.

Despite the way he is portrayed on the show, Connor is the wisest of all the Roy kids. He has known his father longer than any of them and decided to stay away from Logan's games. Hope he gets a juicy storyline for season 4.

Also explains why she was so willing to toss Kendall aside to have Logan be more present at the wedding. Weirdly enough, she’s perfect for Logan. Maybe that’s why they got divorced

I actually think Logan was holding out some hope that Kendal could get it together and takeover but when he finally gave up and asked to cashout that’s when Logan decided to cashout too. I actually think it’s Kendall or none of the siblings still.

For everyone saying it was Connor who betrayed them. The inside the episode literally confirms it was Tom who betrayed shiv for good reason let’s be real

That would be so out of line with Connor's character, too. He genuinely loves his siblings and is a kind of surrogate dad; he also has no skin in the game so why would he leak their plans to Logan? Nah.

Kendall has such an interesting story and I think he's one of the best developed and real characters of the show. I personally think succession is the best piece of television ive seen and its due to the scene "this is the day his reign ends." there's a feeling of frustration everytime Logan undermines and manipulates the kids, especially Kendall, and that just makes that scene so much more powerful.

The fact he's even more obsessed with his image in Season 3 than he was in Season 1, and the fact he sabotages himself every turn for no good reason (like firing the superstar lawyer because he's so deluded that he thinks she's the problem) means he's just too annoying for me to appreciate

SO I am really looking forward to his rebirth from inside in season4(unlike his siblings, I can still see much growth potential in Kendall)

the entire premise of this story is HOW THEY ALL MANIPULATE EACH OTHER, the kids manipulate Logan and their mother, too. So, who's worse? They want to take Logan down for the business, for money...don't you think Logan knows that...so, do they love him? I mean, it's all right there at the end.

Roman really had all of the information needed to succeed but failed. He knew Matesson true intentions at Kendall’s party, he was there with his father at that final meet, and yet he said nothing and nervously waited until the final second to say something to Shiv. Smh I had hopes for all three at different points. Oh well. It was a fantastic season!!

I think Roman's main issue isn't that he is a moron, he can actually be fairly smart ; it's his low self-esteem, that gets him both paranoid and always looking for approval

I think given his conflicted feelings about going behind his fathers back and his sibling rivalry with Shiv (he did always get smug about undermining her relevance and leaving her out of the loop on business dealings) he was very reluctant to tell Shiv or anyone what his father might do. I think he knew once he said it and got the inevitable reaction, that it made the possibility very real and that he would get sucked into a backlash against his father, which he was very hesitant about

Logan knew this so that is why he kept dangling the carrot in front of them to keep them on his side as much as possible.

The subtle foreshadowing in season three was Tom frequently showing up in Logan's meetings. A privilege Logan uses to reward loyalty and show his approval. Towards the end of the season Tom is frequently in Logan's presence, but never appearing to be there for any particular reason.

Great analysis. One thing to add: Shiv was calling Tom to run a story on ATN about Logan being unwell and needing to step aside.

you're the only one who seems to remember that shiv specifically asked logan not to sacrifice tom! this is a great video, would love to hear more of your thoughts on the show!

I think the series will end with Logan, as always, winning. The cost of that victory, though, his family. He kicked then to hard and they'll never come back to him again. His Succession: none at all.

i honestly think Shiv deserved Tom's betrayal for all she and did to him and how he was treated by the Roys, although Shiv seems to love him in a screwed up way. He didn't betray her for Logan, he betrayed her for himself. I'm sooo excited to see how their marriage plays out next season, I hope they don't get a divorce though

Without that they did not have a supermajority. Tom could have contacted anyone in that room with this info... Gerri, Frank, Karl......

This was a fantastic analysis. I think a breakdown on Kendall's birthday party would also be beneficial. Even though this season seemed dull in terms of his Arc. It was also a character study on Kendall. The birthday party. First culminating with the kids entrance to the party through their "mother's womb". As they all traversed said party. They became ensnared in his mind. Hence why the bad vibes became tantamount. Each of the siblings became key personality traits as they literally existed in Kendall's mind. His birthday party. Roman portraying his ruthlessness, Shiv back to being the voice of reason and his compassion and Connor refusing to take off his jacket and exhibiting his insubordinance and naivity. All of Kendall's excess is portrayed in his presents as he searches for the present his kid's got him. Which you touched on. But beyond that. There is also a culmination of nostalgia and the need for meaning and something sentimental and solid to hold onto. Hence why at the end of the episode. We find him wrapped up in an A-Team blanket. And his assistants attempts at finding a He-Man lunch box. Resulting in an apartment filled with them as Kendall searched for the perfect exhibition of something meaningful from his past.

The part about the present was interesting because I don't think there was a present. Notice how his ex-wife told him the wrapping had rabbits on it. That was her slighting him for killing there rabbit when he told his assistant it was ok to give it bagels.

The more I peel back the show the more I love it. I've already rewatched multiple times to pick up on more stuff; fascinating writing by Jesse Armstrong and terrific performances all around.

I feel so betrayed I was certain there was going to be an episode 10. Oh the heartbreak I felt when the truth finally sunk in.

There was a set episode 10, but it was scratched due to delay and pandemic shooting schedule.

You definitely need to have more Succession chat-ups. Strong work.

As a fan, I too wanted Kendal to have learned his lesson beginning of season three, but realistically his arc of Egocentric to Humility over the course of the entire new season was one for the books. In the end, I loved it and I've watched that switch in the season finale three times already. Like you said, a masterclass in writing.

Please keep talking about Succession during this off-season. You really seem to have insight on what has been going on these past three seasons. Excellent analysis. Can't agree more.

I know this is old, but I think the reason Kendall didn't find the present was because there was no present. Notice how his ex-wife said it had the rabbit wrapping. She was pointing out his neglect to take care of their rabbit.

Kendall was and has definitely been the most capable. Plus, he’s still a good person or at least a protagonist. The choices he makes within his control are of the best intention. He’s arrogant but he’s not a bad person like Roman. He does have a lack of self awareness. He’s not incompetent tho, idk what ur on

Theyre all bad people who happen to possess good qualities; Kendall's are just the least offensive -- which would be great if his actions weren't completely motivated by what people think of him. If he's able to get his head out of his butt (and process his trauma), I'd love to see him in his element again.

@@milkflavored Kendall’s flaws mostly end up hurting himself tho, whereas Roman and shivs decisions are deliberately made to harm others. When did Kendall intentionally do something to harm another character who didn’t already harm him?

Thank you, I needed this!:) Succession is not a tv show, it's truly the masterpiece. And cast is insanely good, I would literally give Oscar all equally to Logan, Kendall, Shiv, Tom and Roman. I haven''t had an impression not for once not for a second that they actually act haha, their performances are surreal.

This is a really great breakdown of the season and moreover the merger with Mattson. Normally these types of videos are dead wrong and miss on the many nuances but you did a bang up job here and packaged it nicely for some who may have missed details of what was going on and why.

I might be one of the few people to say this, But I think Logan is right. none of the siblings are fit to run Waystar no matter how you look at it. He gave them all tests and they all failed. in the end they are spoiled and incompitent for the position and will drive it to the ground. unlike Lukas.

Logan built the company, why does he have to hand it over to anyone, unless he chooses to, it's his company. These writers did a great job getting everybody picking and choosing who they want to win, instead of looking at why they even need to be fighting for control

agree 100% YES, YOU'RE 100% CORRECT and they tried getting Logan out since day one, so who's the bad guy? Logan says it at the end when he's talking about "love." I mean he started the company, they can make their own damn money. Were the kids ever successful at any position in the company, what have they accomplished?

I agree 100%. I remember a line from season one that went something like "the entire world is open to you, but you choose to play in the backyard." Think about the vast wealth and connections the Roys have. Any one of the siblings can go anywhere in the world and do anything they want - but all three of them are wrestling in the mud for the keys to the Waystar CEO nameplate, a responsibility none of them are fit to bear. I don't blame Logan for turning over Waystar to an outside entity, it's just a smart business decision at this point.

WONDERFUL RECAP OF ALL 3 SEASONS! I'm SO addicted to Succession since season 1. Dying to see season 4 (I pray it's not the last as there's so much juice left, I think). Yes, please continue the reviews 🥰

Great analysis, what did you make of the scene with Logan having a UTI attack and summoning Tom to help him in the washroom. I believe Logan called him son and Tom referred to him as Dad.

Both Will and Adam both wrote on SNL. So interesting. That’s like John Mulaney and Bill Hader coming up with a show like this. Speaking of Bill, he actually has a show that’s gaining steam in the dramedy genre

Actually, Will Ferrell is not involved with the making of this show and is a producer in name only. He and Adam McKay owned a production company together; Adam McKay has been producing without Will but was legally required to credit Will on any projects. Will got so tired of this that the partnership has since dissolved.

Will just didn't want to be involved in so many projects. It was just too much for him from what I read. There's more to it than just that according to McKay (including a role he cider someone else over Ferrell for) but yeah, McKay just wanted to continue producing at a volume that Ferrell just didn't have a passion for.

I totally missed Tom calling Greg "Sporus".

Jeremy Strong's acting reminds me a lot of young Dustin Hoffman's style in the 60s and 70s

Very insightful breakdown! It’s easy to miss some of the minor details from earlier in the season that connect back to the finale. This season finale was brilliantly written, especially the ending scene (gave me chills). It was nice to see Kendall, Shiv, and Roman share a moment and come together, but we know Logan is always a few steps ahead. I anticipated he would’ve considered that his kids would try to stop the acquisition but I wasn’t prepared to see Tom walk in! He played his cards right and is now in a favorable position. I’m excited to see how season 4 plays out, especially for Shiv and Roman! I’m curious if the sibling trio will last or if they’ll try to fend for themselves. 🤔 Such a good show!

Also another reference I kinda saw was a trojan horse idea of Logan almost letting them have this false idea of majority rule voting.Thinking that they’d won, only for Logan to expose the horse being the divorce agreement changing.

You made the series make sense… each season being a different siblings shot at the big show and the father using their connections for his benefit

Yes. I didn't really notice that either especially since no matter what is going on Kendall is always the one having some type of major crisis. Shiv could hold her own if she wasn't so immature and petty. Roman is the most grounded but he sucks at making real long term decisions. And Connor, Connor is getting married so that's nice lol.

Great video, but I don’t think the next season will be the last. The show will stay focused on the family dynamics, but pivot from being about who will inherit the company from their father, to the kids on more or less equal footing and trying to get one-up on each other. Logan can easily fade into the distance (or even die), but the kids will keep fighting each other because that’s how they were raised. And this is the key to the genius of Succession. It’s never been about the company to anyone other than Logan (it’s always about the company to him; that’s his first born). To everyone else, it’s about their internal pecking order. You can take away their father, you can even take away the company, those kids will keep fighting each other because it’s all they really know.

Kendall got what he wanted from the start of the season... Rom and Shiv on his side against Logan.. So in a way,, Ken won..but lost for now.. Great set up for season 5! I really enjoyed this video. Please do more on Succession! Thanks

So, father competes with his kids "I win" and mother sell their rights to get a flat fot his new love... No wonder they all have issues. Those parents are disgusting and always taking revenge against their own children, the mother clearly takes back at them for choosing dad at the divorce, so now she only cares about herself and not being alone, staying with a guy that is most interested on what he can get instead of her. And those who like that much Tom, I don't get it, he's always looking for what he can get for himself, as same as mom's new husband

I really don’t understand the sympathy for Tom so many people seem to have, he uses people as furniture 😱

I have to say, I was disappointed with season 3. I felt like it was fizzing out. But the final episode completely turned out all around. It made the whole season. I can't wait to see how season 4 shapes up

I feel the complete opposite actually. I felt pretty bored throughout s2 except for the very end but I was interested all of s3 and that finale was my fav so far.

Your explanation gave me a much greater appreciation for the show
