    The scene in which Kendall's son wanted his grandfather to read him toddler books forced Logan to accept that he has no male heir apparent, so he looked outside the family. Logan didn't want children; he wanted sharks that would attack and defend his true love, Waystar/Royco. Logan found what he wanted his children to be in Matsson.

    I don’t think you can assume that Tom is dismissing his marriage like Shiv did. One reason he betrayed shiv could be to get her to respect him because he still loves her, and by putting himself in a more powerful position it’s the only way to get positive attention from her

    No, Tom loves his Sporus more. He’s already castrating Greg for marriage 🤣 But in all seriousness. In Logan’s “game”, the only love anyone has is for power over Royco. It’s painted well when Tom is upset over his wife getting offered CEO and when he constantly asks Shiv “but what’s in it for me”. Tom does truly love Shiv but realizes that Shiv loves power for herself more. Shiv even ironically admits that she doesn’t love Tom and Tom only loves her because she’s way more powerful than him. The show beautifully paints how greed can twist people into sacrificing family/love for power. It’s fucked.

    I don't agree with the video's take that he "dismissed" his marriage or that he did it to get respect from her. Tom seems to genuinely love Shiv and wants the kind of happy healthy white picket fence marriage that his parents probably had, in conjunction with fulfilling his own ambitions. But he's been shown again and again that his wife doesn't love or respect him, will neglect him at every turn, and would likely stab him in the back if she had to. So Tom just got there first. He chose power over love because it was the only option truly open to him - for me his decision was as justified as Kendall turning on Logan in the S2 finale (for very similar reasons). The thing is Shiv probably will give him more positive attention now because her understanding of love has always been informed by unhealthy power dynamics.

    Would be great. But, Kendall has nothing but his word. Logan will ensure Kendall's word is viewed as that of an immature, drug addicted son trying to hurt his father again just because he is unhappy with a business decision. Logan has all the advantages when dealing with his children. Discrediting any of them is easy, because they are all horrible people, thanks mostly to him, and their mother, who emerged this season as equal to Logan in being a horrible parent.

    After re-watching the first two seasons, the great reality that drives this show is Logan Roy is a business genius struggling with the fact that he raised four children who are woefully incompetent at business. He constantly tests them - often cruelly- and almost every time they fail. In all the big meetings, they are all paralyzed to voice an opinion for fear of disappointing their father.

    I still think Logan loves Kendall, the way he was reading story book to his grandson, felt like he really loved his son. The way he was asking for him at the time of Panic room scene also make sure that he cares for him. Logan was also concerned about his company, as he should be . In all fairness he just wanted his successor who can lead his empire with all full frontal, because there are people and companies who are waiting for them to make one single mistake. After seeing Mattson, he was bit depressed because he knew that none of his kids will be able to match Mattson’s intelligence and business sense. and therefore they are not ready to face the real world.

Initially I loved Succession, then a few things had me sort of back off from it, but then season 3 eventually drew me back in. I think the humor sometimes comes on strong and causes me to miss some things, but a re-watch of it has been very worthwhile so far, and is making me appreciate it much more. I like to think of the succession question as a secondary theme, if not a red herring, serving as a mere frosting on top of the emotionnal and psychological core of the show. Kind of what hacking, capitalism and conspiracies were to Mr Robot, which basically had a 4 episodes long epilogue to conclude the characters arcs and actual main topics of the show. As there is no coming back into the CEO race, and considering there is only one season left, we can't expect many turns of events, but mostly linear character development. So I can see the whole thing ending quite openly with the Roy siblings having enough and finally preparing their exit. In the end they will renounce having anything to do with Logan, and begin to deal with their own issues on their own terms (Roman might have the hardest time with this, which would be super interesting). All of that in parallel with a bleak commentary on the business side, with Tom and Greg engaging in long-term careers only to eventually become the new Frank and Gerri of Gojo-Waystar-Royco. That or they won't even be taken seriously by Mattson as they will now be in competition with outsiders for their positions. Or maybe Tom will step out after Shiv's redemption, or Greg will backstab him, who knows, who cares. In the end what happens to Logan and who he chooses to succeed him will probably not matter either considering Mattson is about to eat him alive, alongside his legacy, and he clearly doesn't give a damn about any Roy, Wambsgans or Hirsch. So the Roy kids going to therapy would probably be the best part. Anyway that's my "happy" ending proposition In the bad ending everyone is miserable, maybe someone dies, and Mattson still wins

  • @drgonz0id

    @drgonz0id

    2 жыл бұрын

    The "who will be CEO" question is simply a jumping off point. The heart of show lies in the dynamics between the characters and the themes around power, greed and capitalism. The Tom betrayal and Mattson entering the scene add more intrigue to the business plots. Though it's more interesting to consider how the shakeups at the company will impact the family. I think who takes the throne is ultimately sort of irrelevent.

    Great recap. I see the battle between the kids and Logan scaling further into the public sphere now that they are completely compromised interenally.

    After watching your previous video, I watched the last episode of 3rd season. Amazingly I absorbed so much more. Can’t wait for season 4, do you really think it’ll be the lsat season?

    I don’t think Tom sees Shiv as expendable. He loves/loved her, but she just keeps breaking him down and treating him like shit and he is slowly beginning to stand up for himself and do what’s best for him

    I love the breakdown you did with Kendall. Spot on! Disagree on Tom however. He actually truly loves Shiv unlike Logan but Shiv has emasculated him and belittled him so much he is full of resentment. It was only a matter of time before he started acting out passive aggressively. Shiv should have seen this coming.

    the last scene where tom lays his hands on shiv was allegedly improv'd, so might be a case of unintentional symbolism.
