My 5 star prediction for you would be Role Playing by Cathy Yardley. This book feature characters in their late 40's who are both gamers. Because they are mature, you get to skip silly, petty drama but you still get a ton of fun. There's a lot of strong representation & diversity in this and there's an incredible balance of humor with heavier topics. These two start off building a friendship and it so strong and wholesome. The way the romantic feelings finally emerge feels really natural and I think even stronger because there is that slow burn. I picked this up randomly and was delighted by how much I enjoyed it, so I think and hope it's something you like, too!

The Perfect Marriage was terrible and I decided to pass on You Shouldn’t Have Come Here (and I was glad because I have since heard mostly poor reviews on it). But on the note of you liking the trope of Horror Movie, I am currently reading Jeneva Rose’s new release Home is Where the Bodies Are, with that same trope. So far so good, but I’m only about 100 pages in. As always, can’t wait to see your reviews!

Unlikely Animals by Annie Hartnett (because it’s charming, and hilarious, and sad, and tackles serious issues like grief and addiction) Also, the Sentence by Louise Eldrich, because again it tackles serious issues in a quirky way

Okay I responded to the patreon survey but I also REALLY want to rec The Silence That Binds Us... bc it's a powerful & accessible book about the way depression/mental health disorders, racism and other oppression cycles silence victims--but told in a way that fosters compassion and empathy for the victims and their inability to speak out. And then it illustrates the ways that silence perpetuates those cycles, and encourages not only victims, but allies, to speak out in order to break the cycles. It's one of the best books I've read this year and I feel like readers of all ages (YA+) and all genres will be changed by reading this book! Just can't say enough good things! TW: suicide

Herc by Phoenicia Rogerson is one of the best retellings I've ever read. It's told through vignettes of all the people who encountered into Hercules throughout his life, so it almost feels like an E! True Hollywood Story (though it's not a transcript). Plus, the audiobook was a full cast and incredible.

⭐🌟⭐ Our tastes in books only line up partially so idk if it'll work for you, but if you want a short story scifi, Sleep Donation by Karen Russell was a 5 star for me. Its a dystopian setting where people donate their sleep in an insomnia epidemic...hence the title.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ think you would love The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker, where two mythical creatures meet each other by chance! Magical/folktale-y, love and friendship, NYC at the turn of the century---it's got it all. I also think you would love The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden (if you like reading books with a main character who is a nurse during wartime). Magical realism, deep bonds of family and friendship, and a quest to solve strange goings-on and save a life. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

i HATED the perfect marriage omg and i find i usually like the same books as you. it did have that writing where its super readable but i say be wary haha. as for a book recommendation, i'd say natural beauty by ling ling huang if you haven't read that already! it's a speculative/horror/fever dream/lit fic vibe that i think you'll love (i also loved books like bunny and how high we go in the dark which i saw you also loved and this book gave me the same feelings as those). and beyond the weirdness wtf-nature of the plot, there's discussion about unconditional familial love, the immigrant experience, ideal western beauty standards that i ATE UP and think you would too

While I generally liked all of the books, I had to push myself through books 1 and 2 of Stormlight and honestly not sure I'll finish the series. Not to say you won't like them-- I think you will! Brian Feehan's (2) books. The first one i Harmony of Fire, and the second one is Harmony of Lies. I got them based off the cover, but also i liked his mom's writing. I think you would like these books because there's "elements" of magic in them, but it's not like "wand magic" and the second one takes place in a haunted house! (i think you'd really like the second one) and you need to read the red one before the blue one, because character building.
