The END of Screen Tearing

Screen tearing won't be a problem in live streams anymore. We now have THREE capture cards with VRR support - but it's not all hunky dory. Let's talk about how this works and what the future of capture cards looks like.
CORRECTION: Nvidia GSync COULD work with these capture cards over HDMI HOWEVER it requires HDMI 2.1, which very very few monitors currently ship with. This is still a silly limitation that FreeSync doesn't suffer from.

Hey there. At the 11:47 mark when you said you "cloned the capture out to the XR1 Pro", are you using OBS projector preview to do that? Or did you actually clone the output to HDMI and display port via windows/nvidia control panel, and then re-enable GSYNC on the display port display (monitor)?

I do wish there was some sort of frame interpolation or blending implementation for live streaming when dealing with uneven frame pacing. I know when editing and rendering a recording, having that feature enabled helped make the footage look smoother. Honestly ever since upgrading to high refresh rate gaming, my streams never looked as smooth as when I was locked at 60FPS. None of my viewers notice it at least, but when I watch my past broadcasts side by side, the difference in smoothness is obvious.

A few months ago I did move over to a dual system. To fix this, I connected another monitor to the gaming PC through the Elgato 4K60 Pro Mk2, at 60 Hz, and then run OBS on the gaming PC too, but OBS there doesn't do anything but show a full screen preview on the secondary monitor at 60 FPS, so the capture card captures the secondary monitor at 60 Hz and it's no tearing smooth 60 FPS capture while I get full 240 Hz and Freesync on the gaming monitor. It's not as clean a setup as I wanted, but it works and lets me stream and record a smooth 60 FPS while I get the normal function of the gaming monitor. And i haven't noticed any performance issues on the gaming PC cause of this as OBS doesn't really do anything but show the preview. And the secondary monitor on the gaming PC is just another 1440p monitor I have on the streaming PC, so it's not another monitor in the mix, just using another input on that monitor. It would be awesome to have a PCIe capture card with VRR and 240Hz at 1440p support to make it cleaner though.

(HDMI or Display Port) My setup is : Two monitors running the same way as before setting up the capture card, the Elgato HD60 X plugged in with a Display Port to HDMI cable (with the OUT cable disconnected) and an HDMI dummy plug (a few bucks on Amazon) Then you just duplicate your dummy monitor and your Elgato (which also acts as a dummy) Not clean but it work

@@EposVox Yeah but there wouldn't be a display there capture side - or a fixed refresh rate one. I wonder if the NVidia driver is capable of avoiding tearing when cloning a VRR output to a different output with a fixed refresh rate, which by all reason it should be able to - it has all the framebuffers, the outputs aren't anyhow tied together, they just scan out existing framebuffers as the driver chooses to. All they hypothetically have to do is to delay the framebuffer destruction and have a virtual flip chain on the secondary outputs rather than forcing a flip when the original output causes a flip. And they do have virtual flip chains fundamentally implemented for Fast Sync, they can do a lot of magic there.

  • @EposVox

With Display Cloning, it sends exactly what it sends to both outputs. There’s no option to buffer one but not the other. A capture card’s processing chip is effectively a display for all intents and purposes. Doesn’t matter that there isn’t really, it acts as one, so the side effects are still there. You’d need a whole intermediate capture/reproduction to buffer it, which is what the obs projector preview method does

It’s more expensive to manufacture and very much limits the market base. High end pc gamers are a very niche market. Neither cameras nor consoles/TVs support DP and there’s no way to convert HDMI *to* DP with modern specs, so it completely cuts off the usability of a card while also increasing manufacturing costs. Capture cards get so cheap due to mass production for a wide market, making something that’s both more expensive to make while also something you have to make less of because you’d sell less of just is a hard business decision to make. When HDMI generally keeps up, if just a couple years behind, no consumer company wants to. erm, no, The video you commented on very much showed it CAN have screen tearing, and I provided some ways to try to fix it.

It seems, to me, like your audio and video files are separate. Like you voiced over your own video. I found it super distracting and am just going elsewhere to find someone to help me fix the issue .

    In 2024 Nvidia supports freesync

Nvidia “supports” it the same now as it did when I made the video. Still doesn’t apply to the older capture cards. Gotta have HDMI 2.1 to use it. Doesn’t work with older freesync

So the Xbox is better for every Capture Card? That means the quality and the tearing would be better?!?!

Or, instead of spending a single cent, if you have an Nvidia GPU, you can use NDI Screen Capture HX. This is something that eposvox knows as well but he's running this sponsored video instead of talking about the free solution that actually killed capture cards on PC.

  • @EposVox

Ah, right, because my sponsor - *a web domain host* cares about what products or services I talk about. "instead of talking about" - you know I was the only one talking about NDI on KZread for YEARS, right? I interviewed its creator, whom I called "the man who killed capture cards" (mostly as a joke), have directly given feedback for features towards its development, just made a video about my massive studio overhaul moving all of my camera work towards it... but I'm making "this sponsored video *instead of* talking about it"?! Are you high? Do you need to call someone? NDI isn't a perfect solution. It's also not the solution everyone wants or needs, and it can't be used with consoles - which is what this video focused on for 85% of the running time. This video was NOT sponsored in ANY way by EVGA... or Elgato... or ASUS... since, you know, you typically don't have 3 sponsors for the same kind of product in 1 video anyway... and that has nothing to do with why I'm talking about this update. Holy fucking shit, dude.
