    Sorry for the delay. The individual pixels on the screen seemed to take forever to render. Before anyone complains, yes, the animations are oversimplified but that is irrelevant for any of the discussed points and simple is easier to understand.

    Yo this solved my screen tearing and "micro" screen tearing issue that I've been working on for a few days now. I wasn't a fan of the input lag from v-sync and fastsync wasn't getting rid of the tearing issue. You described what G-sync and Freesync do, and how the monitor's refresh rate should be set higher than the game frame rate in order to prevent screen tearing or frame mistimings. This is what helped me the most - I set my in game framerate slightly lower than my monitors refresh rate and now I get no tearing or micro tearing, all with no input delay. Thanks a million

  • @RocketScience

    @RocketScience

    6 жыл бұрын

    The short answer is no, it doesn't solve tearing. I don't want to come across as rude. If the explanation wasn't good enough, then that is my fault. However, if you're asking that question, then you definitely haven't understood how tearing works. Feel free to ask a specific question on a part of the video that you haven't understood or just rewatch the video if you want to know why it doesn't solve tearing.

    Sorry, I find this a bit confusing. I have a nice 144hz monitor that can run freesync but I have an nvidia card gtx 680 from 2013 which is a bit old now and I want to upgrade soon. Question 1 For now, if I play a more demanding game and only get 60 fps, from your video it sounds like it's better to turn vsync on, because in vsync the gpu is waiting on the monitor, but since my monitor is fast this is not as much of an issue because it won't be waiting long. However if I play a less demanding game like Rocket league or an old game like Call of Duty 4 and can get 180+ fps then I should turn vsync off or not? Question 2 Lastly if I upgrade I guess I need to buy an amd video card to go with the monitor? Or is fast sync with the new nvidias enough? They seem expensive now in comparison for the same benchmark.

  • @RocketScience

    @RocketScience

    6 жыл бұрын

    Q1: It just depends on how much the tearing bothers you. In Singleplayer/non-competitive games it's purely a matter of personal preference. With VSync on, it will stutter more when you're not able to reach the 144FPS that your monitor can display. With it off, there will be tearing either way but at 180FPS it's just 3 times less noticeable than at 60FPS. Q2: Fast Sync is only really useful if you can get high framerates. At 60FPS it will stutter just as much as regular VSync and it doesn't provide an input lag advantage there either. Freesync is just vastly superior at low framerates because it will stutter less than anything you can get on a regular monitor and it does that while keeping the input lag as low as possible. The AMD GPU line-up isn't that great right now but it might be best to wait until later in the year anyway.

    Rocket Science Cheers Rocket Science, I'll turn vsync on for now, I tested it and can't really *feel* the input lag, but I hate seeing the tears when turning. I'll also wait to see what amd puts out this year before buying. Thumbs up!

    Can you explain why i dont have tearing without Vsync or Freesync? even without a fps cap? So my monitor can output 144hz, and if i disable freesync and vsync and cap the fps to 142 then that would eliminate tearing? the thing is that i play BFV with radeon chill ranging the fps between 50-75 fps and still no tearing.. why?

Also, I have a G-Sync 165hz 1440p monitor, but I turn G-sync off because it makes the monitor REALLY hot, and it being a $700 monitor, I'd like it to last a long time so.... and I barely notice a difference with G-sync off anyways

    Geforce GTX 980.... multitudes beyond the recommended specs for rocket league. I run it at 250FPS all the time @ 1440p... when I have it set that high, but i have it set to 164 FPS because my refresh rate is 165hz. Wondering if 3 down is more beneficial than 1 down and why.

  • @RocketScience

    @RocketScience

    6 жыл бұрын

    Getting hot? That doesn't sound good but if you're paying for G-Sync then you should be able to use it or ask for a replacement. In terms of visuals I would recommend using G-Sync because even with VSync off you will have uneven frame spacing and stuttering in the ball. It's just that the higher the framerate goes the less noticeable it becomes. Meaning at 250FPS it will be pretty even but not as even as what G-Sync can offer. The reason I recommend locking 3 below instead of 1 is because of the testing they've done at blurbusters.com. The kind of frame limiters that don't add input lag (like the one in RL) don't ensure perfectly even frame spacing. That means that even though you will get avg 164FPS if you set the limiter to that sometimes a frame will render so fast that it is ready before the monitor is ready. If you then have VSync off you will get a tear. If you have it on then your input lag will increase. In their tests with Overwatch and CS:GO they had to set the FPS 3 lower than max to make sure there was never an issue. 2 will work too most of the time but I wouldn't recommend 1 even though they didn't test it for RL.

I would also try different internet browsers And stuff like GSync off/on to see if anything makes a difference.

    If I've understood the question correctly, you are asking if the lack of screen tearing and low input lag are worth reducing your fps. First of all, you are not seeing 300 fps when playing. The 300-400 number given by the game is not how many frames you see on your screen but rather how many the game can output. How many frames you see is the refresh rate of your monitor (or less if the game can't output that many(the 300-400 number)(not a problem for you)). So if your monitor's refresh rate is less than 75hz a higher refresh rate is definitely an advantage.

    What about vsync on but capping frame rate to one below the monitors refresh rate? I read in a post that this will reduce input lag since vsync is processing the exact amount of frames, taking into account the one frame buffer.

  • @RocketScience

    @RocketScience

    6 жыл бұрын

    That is true in theory and has been verified to work on multiple games. It's not as great as it may sound though. First of all if you cap it to 1 FPS below your refreshrate you'll get 1 guaranteed stutter per second. And RL's internal frame limiter doesn't ensure perfectly even frame spacing so it doesn't work with that. It will require a different frame limiter and that won't be without input lag either. Should still be lower input lag than just putting on VSync but it would still be significantly more than you could get with VSync off and high framerate.

  • @deadfishthesecond

    @deadfishthesecond

    Rocket Science thank you for responding. I use rtss to cap the fps and haven't noticed any stuttering yet, but it's possible that I've just become used to the effect as well. I had another question: do you know if there are any differences in input lag between using a ds4 controller with native support vs using an xinput program like ds4Windows or steam? I swear that it feels different using native support (more responsive) even though I'm pretty sure i have the settings of each matching each other as far as deadzone and sensitivity. Thanks again for responding!

  • @RocketScience

    @RocketScience

    6 жыл бұрын

    RTSS is actually the exact program you should use iirc that's the one which still manages the lowest input lag while keeping the frame spacing stable. The stutter on 60Hz only happens 1/60th of a second and on 144Hz it's just 1/144th of a second and the rest is smooth so it might be hard to tell. I haven't tested it myself. About the DS4Windows thing. That's one of the things I want to test with my highspeed camera. It's a bit further back on the priority list though and I need to get a DS4 first so I'm relying on Patreon to make purchases like this a non issue.

    vsync increases input lag because it will buffer X number of frames ready to send to monitor and drop newer created frames in excess i believe. so its more input lag to have vsync because you'll always be viewing older buffered frames rather than the most recently made one.

Freesync tends to have a smaller fps range in which it works (e.g 48 - 120, instead of like 30 - 144 with G-Sync), so make sure to check your monitors specifications to make sure it supports Free-sync up to 140.

    I noticed that the temperature of my CPU exceeded 90 ° C, this can be the cause of tearing in a game? Thank you

  • @durjam3734

    No, but it could cause the cpu to throttle (purposely slow down to lower the temp and avoid hardware damage, which could intern cause a lower framerare which then make the tearing more noticeable

    I was experiencing tearing with some games. I turned V sync in the game off and turned it on in the nvidia control panel. Games run smoothly and perfectly now.

    I have no clue what's wrong with my set up now. I have a GTX 1060 6GB with a 4k monitor that have 4ms, and 60hz. Rocket league plays better on my 1080p 144hz 1ms. Game says it's getting over 100fps on the 4k but I can see that it's not, feels more like 35 or 45. sometimes I can tell it's getting 60fps but most of the time it's not.

    I don't really understand what you think is wrong with your setup? 144Hz is way better than 60Hz. Once you're used to it, 60 is going to feel terrible. You might have felt like 60Hz is fine when you weren't used to 144 but once you get used to the smoothness it's hard to go back.

    I'm guessing that maybe VSync is forced off in the graphics driver or some other tool that can manipulate settings. So even if the checkbox in the game is on (and you hit apply) then it might still be off. If VSync is actually on then tearing can't happen. It's not like G-Sync is a more reliable version of VSync or anything. It only has the benefits mentioned in the video.

    Steven Lai thats an old ass card bud. Get like a 1060. The tearing wont be completly gone but having over 100 fps on a 144hz screen makes it less noticable
