since you mentioned the censorship of adult games, i'd love it if you made an entire video going into further details on this subject. there definitely seems to be a large amount of backlash against adult content these days coming from a lot of different angles. i think it's something that needs to be discussed more

Great video; steam has been pretty disappointing as of late for how they've been treating developers. I comprehend that it's predicated on the puritanical overstep by censorous legislations, but it's difficult not to be dismayed by it all. I haven't played anything by Illusion in some time, I may try and seek out a copy of Yuusha as I don't believe it received the same ire that it's predecessor did.

I am going to miss Illusion shutting down, I’ve been following all their games since the early 2000s I really loved their Des Blood adventure rpg series and Brutish Mine from when they started making games in their early days in the 90s. Illusion started making games in 1993 and in 2001 expanded to become a large studio. Their first games was Angel Army and Sei Senshi Mokkoriman on the PC-98 in 1993. Mokkoriman RPG was their first RPG game in 1994. Some of their other old 1990s classics include. I literally didn't know about Illusion quits. It hurts me so much. Many of their H-games are fantastic especially Koikatsu, because that game is having an endless possibility with character customization and that game indeed is a gem for that (of course with mods and HF patch, but still). It took me 3 months after this news being uploaded to encounter this video itself, I didn't even know about this.

Sadly there are things that I can and cannot say in a KZread video if I want to remain on KZread.

When you mentioned dress up I realized illusion didnt bother to tap a massive market. Back in the day I remember girls loving those dressup flash games. They shouldve made a SFW dressup koikatsu clone, remove all the risque clothing and sold it as a cute girl dressup game. Add a poser, add real life clothing brand clothes, add some share on facebook button, and Im sure people would love it. A bunch of bored moms sharing their cutely dressed up anime girl daughters online, or dressing digital versions of themselves up in clothes they could never afford. If a digital dollhouse (sims) can be big, so can this. Heck, work on some tech that lets you port your totally-not-koikatsu-models into sims, most of your potential customers would already have that game.

Such a pity, one of my favorite games of all time is Artificial Girl 3, the last game that Illusion tried to be immersive and have sets of animations instead of that bunch of 2-second loop animations that change by crossfading with the next instead of in fact transitioning from one state to the next. I mean, imagine that each time you made an attack in an action game, the game made a crossfade to show that attack animation and then another one to go back to the standing animation. By that, I'd say 3D Custom Maid 2 does a far better job, though I didn't actually play AI Shoujo because FPS is important to me, and on my PC it ended with an FPS similar to what is shown in the video. Since it wasn't sold to anyone that we know of I imagine they are rebranding to distance themselves from Rapelay. As for Steam, at this point, I have to say, if you want an adult game, why are you going to Steam? They are famous for having censorship policies... although considering that Karin's Prison is there completely uncensored I'd say that their problem is the Japanese underage look of the characters in many h-games. That's the only explanation I can find. The highly customizable games probably allow the player to make a character that looks underage and that's why they ban it. That's my best guess, but I think that legislation has to be passed to force companies to provide clear-cut explanations in their terms of service about what is and isn't allowed. The way these companies are banning and forbidding things and giving vague responses when asked why is intolerable.

I actually saw the news on Steam that the company was going away forever it caught me off guard. I was sad, but I managed to get the last remaining games on my July birthday since I brought one of their first game back in late 2020. I hope the new company will be in Steam in the near future so I can play new ones them once again ❤

some speculation from a member of koikatsu's discord said that is possible that this is the only way to rebrand and be free from the parent company illusion is part end of sales might be because they dont own their old games? idk despite what you said in the video, i read complaints from people that play their games being low effort nowdays, yes mods make their games better, but is the same problem with releasing broken/unfinished non adult games at $60 or so

The original Steam version of AI Girl was way better than the current one. Steam's changing censorship policies definitely played a part.

I'm seeing this video pretty late, but it was interesting! I have to wonder if the whole thing with Illusion shutting down and IllGames popping up might be a bit similar to the situation in the late 2000s where the American anime distributor ADV did some massive restructuring and became Sentai Filmworks (for all practical purposes). Sometimes companies will strategically sell assets to themselves or a new entity formed by them to make bankruptcy style proceedings work in their favor without completely going bust. I hope this venerable dev did something like that here so they can continue making games.

Hey there's a pair of games called OctoMassage and Inkling Heroes vs Tentacles that got removed from DLsite most likely from Nintendo's copyright infringement with Splatoon. Might make for a good inclusion in a roundup of fanwork games getting the axe if any more news comes from it. I mean if any fanwork gets taken off... those are PRETTY justifiable in how exact they recreate characters' likenesses. I'm not surprised even if I think copyright sucks.

Same happened with AI games on steam. The dev of AI Roguelite (a game wherein everything is AI generated) attempted to release AI Roguelite 2D, a kind of sequel that played more like an action game instead of a text adventure. It was rejected because steam has made various updates and regulations on AI releated games because of copyright uncertainty etc. Thank god the first game is still available, it can be connected with novelai and chatgpt, and custom stable diffusion models can be used.

Good ole Gabe Newell has not exactly been shy about his distaste for Japanese adult games. As stated in the video since most of the banned games are of Japanese origin it's not a stretch to say they use their own interpretation of Washington laws to their own end.

Wow. A little part of me just died. I remember like almost 20 years ago* I randomly saw on KZread a trailer for the game Battle Raper 2. It looked cool (and sexy, obviously), so I searched on the web and found a download link. I know so many Devs who started as HS Devs then switched to Daz ( couple did Blender for a bit) just because they can get on Steam with a Daz3D game and not with any Illusion created game. Steam is a huge rev stream for many of them even with their games being in early access. One one man Dev team got enough from releasing on Steam his game that he could make it his fukk time job even without the money from Patreon who was having one of their "Seems Sus so lets Ban this page" phases they go though even few months.

Was pretty sad to see Illusion go when I heard the announcement. I remember a bit of the rapelay controversy from back in the day, and recall watching an x-play segment exploring sex games, like des blood and sexy beach. I was very excited to pick up Honey Select on Fakku (and laughed when you said it wasn't that good because, damn, burn, lol) and also picked up Koikatsu Party on steam. I didn't know about the existence of Illgames, and Honey Come until watching this though, so I'm glad there's still a chance for myself and others to experience these great games.

Illusion Games becomes ILLGames so not all hope is lost 😁 Steam has some blacklist in its algorithm. The steam policy may change but as long the game is on the blacklist - no chance even when a new release of the game would be allowed

I tried Koikatsu Party once, including with the mods, but I got bored with it. The expansion, being the same price as the full game, further turned me off of it. I did not care for Illusion personally, but I still think it's sad they got booted off of Steam. I am actually surprised Illusion did not get into the business of officially licensing their assets for 3rd party development work. I would love to see the DAZ get some much needed competition and because DAZ is far from ideal if you want to make less realistic and more stylized characters.

I mean, what people do in their private time is none of my business. But I don't think that anyone can justify playing Rapelay. I mean, rape of any kind is absolutely disgusting. But somehow, it's even worse that two of the characters are minors (17 and 12). Also, I'd like to mention that this is an amazing video. I've been wondering about the history of Illusion for a while, and you did a very good job of explaining it without being negatively biased and actually giving information.

Playing a rape game is no different than playing a violent video game. Sex and violence are linked in the brain, and have similar states and functions. So a person enjoying that game does not mean that they think rape is good or that they are future offenders. Even the fact that 2 of the characters are young isn't a problem, kids and teens are often shown getting hurt or traumatized in various adult media, especially horror media.

@@dragongirl2004 Eh... I'd say that a prepubescent child getting stalked and raped is, in fact, a problem. I don't have a problem with dark content, but it's the fact that this game involves children is what gets to me. I haven't played the game, so I don't know the full content of it, but it either implies or shows sexual assault towards a child. Also, to the best of my knowledge, it's not even for a good reason. There's no backstory, no psychological takeaway- it's just rape for the sake of it, which contributes absolutely nothing positive (in my opinion).

A disturbing development in regards how Steam treat game devs and studios... Also, yeah, Nexus mods sometime OVERCOMPLICATE things with mods that require mods for the mod if you want to use a mod that use assets from a mod... confused yet? There's more, UPDATES! For the mod that use a mod that require a mod to keep a game from crashing... less. I tend to stick to using straightforward, standalone mods like retexture mods or mods that actually fix GLARING issues like games made by Bethesda (there's A LOT OF IT, issues). With that in mind, I WILL NOT BE buying and playing Starfield on DAY ONE and just wait out and enjoy the SH*TSHOW from streamers that is OBSESSED with being the "first!". Funny that games from Japan tend to work as intended on day one like the upcoming Armored Core 6...

It really depends on the game. Most have no problems and Steam's system is very convenient.

Ngl I'm not upset at all. They made creepy ass games filled with SA and stalking and underaged characters. Hopefully we can get companies that are inspired by illusions games but don't put in that deprived illegal stuff.

Yeah honey select is pretty much xxx scene simulator the game, AI Shoujo and Koikatsu Party had more gameplay and an adventure story mode.
