I really like this concept from just a self-defense standpoint. The vast majority of people do not have any self-defense training and practicing these setups gets you into a safe and dominate position almost immediately.

I recently started Jiu Jitsu after doing wrestling back in high school. First thing I noticed was, first off, how much less my own wrestling skill was to what I thought it was. But also, just how much more dangerous and risky it was to go for bread and butter techniques like double leg or single. Definentily agree though that in many scramble positions, I find that I have an edge on my training partners, and can end up in a better position/finish the takedown or sweep. After watching this, I really want to change my standup strategy to that of prioritizing arm drags, russian arm tie, and fighting for the underhook, and avoid shooting and going for doubles except in highly advantageous positions. Talking about how the slight and major changes in ruleset really effects the outcome and success of takedowns is very good to hear. If I want to focus on the past and actually become a high level wrestler, I should go to a proper wrestling gym or club. But now that I'm doing Jiu Jitsu, its time to move on, use the wrestling skills as a base, and not focus too much on trying to do the same things I did in the past.

Yes rear naked or also short choke if you cant lock ur rear naked up. Eventually at black belt you will just lock a rear naked on their chin and squeeze. Eventually armbar from back or triangle from back mount will be good.

18:30 This hypothetical speaks to my experience almost exactly. I've been an athlete all my life, and as a kid, me and my friends would wrestle quite frequently. Obviously we weren't grappling as much as a kid involved in wrestling, Judo, Sambo, or BJJ, but enough to have instinctual awareness of what you do and don't want to feel. Zero formal training, but I could perform a tackle on the average person because I had an aptitude built from playing American football. My first BJJ class was in my mid 20s, and so I went with all that I knew. Trying to "tackle" (double leg) someone who is sufficiently trained in BJJ is a terrible idea in my opinion. At best, you successfully get them down, but end up in their guard with completely broken posture. If not that, my experience is that you get stuck in a front headlock position almost every time. Now, maybe I didn't come into BJJ with as much aptitude as I thought. However, it's reassuring to hear Danaher speak to this sort of experience.

Interesting to hear from Danaher just how skilled Georges St Pierre is. Like Bernardo, he must've had to strip away any overconfidence that can come from what you already know so he had the capacity to learn more, even if it's just the smallest detail. That is largely why he's my favorite athlete of all time, and I think he is the P4P greatest mixed martial artist ever.

26:55 George St Pierre had always devoted a part of his training to wrestling. He had a dedicated wrestling coach, Victor Zilberman. John Danaher here is just perpetuating the myth of Jiu Jitsu, created by the Gracie's marketing plan. Brazilians always added techniques to their Jiu Jitsu from wrestling. Most of the no-gi strangles and leg attacks came from the "Luta Livre" school of wrestling. Even the 'Americana' takes it's name because it was learnt from visiting American catch wrestlers.

I really disagree here. I've never had a hard time holding someone down after a double leg and last time I checked a takedown is worth 2 points. Furthermore many tournaments give advantages for close takedowns. You can easily sit to guard from a bad double leg so its not a huge deal if the fail. Many times if you shoot a second time you can get a finish because guys often wait too long after theyve sprawled. Arm drags and trips are cool but theyre hard to get right. when I really need to put someone on there ass I turn it up mix in a lot of fakes and finish with a deep double or single. If I get put in turtle I have many reversals from there and even a few submissions. Everyone in competition always gives the back now just to avoid the points. I win a large number of competitions just because I can put asses on the mat with basic wrestling. I can't speak to the clames gordon goes toe to toe with elite wrestlers under adcc rule sets but I do know Bo Nickle put gordon on his ass several times when they grappled.

Did you know the rules of that fight? Gòrdan couldn't attack hell hook or pull guard...If your opponent is not afraid of your best weapons, the game is much more difficult.Bo would think long and hard before going into a takedown knowing it could be finished immediately.

@@alexcardoso4487 those rules had no effect on how bo took Gordon down. They were there to keep gordon on his feet to make the take downs matter. Gordon could have sprawled on Bo and done the things John talked about but none of that mattered and he got his ass sat down.

  • @letstalkcaliber704

@@stevena8719 dude its pretty hard to get up when someone has a body lock on you and if someone has a deep double than they can get the body lock. B comes after A. Do you eve. realize how much John makes from his instructionals? Did you ever stop to think "do I really need this?" You're watching an advertisement. John didn't show much but was just trying to tell you you need this new thing. What I'm saying is the art of putting someone on their ass and holding them there was perfected a long time ago and it's called wrestling. Rules sets and submissions aside wrestlers do extremely well in nogi because they force gaurd pulls and can avoid submissions with posture and base. I gave you a real world example where bo sat Gordon down several time even though Gordon was a bigger man. Gordon could have spawled and submitted him as john said was a problem only we saw in the real world the gordon couldnt. Nicky rod and j rod are just decent wrestlers and they've accomplished huge things in bjj in a short time. BJJ pays almost nothing so most wreslers stay in wresling or go to mma. Have fun being a follower and letting John think for you.
