I have a lot of these new school guard retention vids. They are heavy on important theory which is great if you are deep in to jiujitsu. But they dont give you simple repeatable live drills to do to train all the movements so i had to build them myself. Instuctionals now fall into two categories. Theory or technique. But they lack the nuts and bolts drills to bring the theory into practice.

It’s taken me a long time to get good at guard retention. I’ve always been fairly good at imposing my will upon people, which means I’m usually in top position. I literally had to resort to pulling guard just to get some practice from guard. It definitely would have been nice to start out with a focus on guard retention so I could master that first. It makes such a huge difference in the rest of your game.
