I have a 10 year old Acura with 210,000 miles on it, and all i've done are oil changes; I can list all my maintenance records on a single page. I don't know if having a car that required this much care and feeding should be celebrated or cursed. This much documentation would probably just remind me as the owner that I had a money pit that I should have departed ways with years ago.

Jeff Faller it was most likely preventative maintenance. Refreshing bushings, refreshing the cooling system, trim pieces...etc. Mind you, every oil change, every coolant flush, every brake fluid flush, pad change, etc has been documented since 2000. These cars are rock solid , the current owner didn’t have to do 85% of the things in that binder, but he did. And that’s why Doug is reviewing this specific car.

Had one. Waited on a list for 18 months for it leading up to spring 2000. Best car I’ve ever owned. Here’s a quirk/feature to mention: Everyone who bought one in the U.S. received a 2-day driving class at BMW’s performance center in Spartanburg, SC. All expenses paid but airfare. There they gave you an M5 to use so you could learn what the car could really do from a performance perspective. It was awesome, just like the car. Always regretted selling it.

In the late 90's/early 00's, this is one of the best looking BMWs, with the E46 M3 and M3 GTR. The E38 was not as beautiful as those, but it wasn't as ugly as its successors, especially the G11/G12 with its massive front end. I would say that the E60 was also beautiful, but not as much as the E39. That beauty and the powerful, good sounding V10 engine were the only good things going for the E60.

Everything is so solid. So well built. The quality is not replicated in more modern BMWs Ive driven. I think the engineers at the time were inspired and loving what they were doing. Armatronic you're 100% correct but I think it's still an anxiety-inducing car to own. I had the v8 m3 and just the thought of the rod bearings giving out gave me anxiety. I replaced them as a preventative measure and they were nowhere near needing attention. 100k miles at that point. The thought of your engine being a grenade isn't good. It's just sad the old cliche "they don't make them likes they used to" is true. The Germans could make a car that goes 500k miles no problem, but that's not good for business. So they made the service life into a science. It will die when they want you to buy a new car.

We had an e39 528i it was the best and most reliable car we have owned. On a trip it was fantastic, smooth, quiet and just ate miles. Had a great trunk so you could take a lot of luggage. I am amazed how this car has retained a modern look. The one you had could have been a new model and it would look good to me now. Great review I have an e90 M3 now which I love but would not mind one of these in my garage as well 👍

Ferrari only in the 90´s they start to install automatic transmitions exclusivelly for american market it makes no sense only having brakes to control a powerfull car ,in the 70´s even the F1 cars had clutch and shifter ,now only shifter .i was thinking a powerfull car without shifter would feel like a go kart for kids ,regards

I own a 2020 BMW M2 competition. I love the layout of the interior, where all the different buttons and switches are placed… all the small little details My car feels like it took so much from old BMW (like this car here) in the best way possible. BMW found a way to keep those same design details and improve them. This 20 year old car feels so similar to my new car. I can’t say the same about a Chevy or a cord or even a Mercedes. I can walk into any BMW of any year and the interior will have the same general layout plan. Examples of what I mean: - the placement and design of the interior trunk release button - the slight tilt in the center console towards the driver - the HVAC controls. The overall layout and design has stayed the same but made more modern - the Board Computer (BC button) - the design of the steering wheel and it’s buttons - the shifter and how it displays the orange light - the orange lights inside - the gauges and their design I could go on all day listing examples but I truly love how their cars have been a continuous evolution of the same great design. Not trying to start from scratch every few years
