in retrospect, drake was never putting on. he was hopping on to a new artists wave and bringing them to a place that is basically unsustainable for a new artist finding their way into the industry. his feature brings you so high that you find yourself struggling to get back to that height as a newer act with no true cult fanbase. it's not the help that people think it is, i feel like drake does this lowkey to sabotage new artists from taking any shine from him while simultaneously benefitting from the new wave they bring when they come out.

This comment reflect mine, and I agree... and it not just Drake this can happend with the like of Kanye West, Beyonce, Taylor Swift or any big artist... Hence as a small artist you have to build your fanbase, build your core fanbase, turn your core fanbase in a cult, grow before asking for big name features... be it Eminem, Jay-Z the only few big name features that bring you into longivity are usually Kendrick Lamar, J.Cole, Nas, and Lil Wayne, (even Justin Beiber to an extent) ... but stay away from pop, cult like big name artist too early in your career until you have a big consistent pull

Kendrick should’ve brought Drake to Compton and showed him what it was like to be black in America. We could’ve got to know Aubrey. Whats crazy is, the problem is just Drake. Because all throughout the 00s, IMO, if you listened to rap, there were 2 people 2-3 who you ALWAYS either heard a track from, or you heard them on somebody elses track: Wayne, T Pain, and Chris Brown. You couldnt listen to a single song practically in that time period without hearing one of those 3 at least once. And if they werent on the original, their would probably be a remix with them featured. Drakes problem is a bit of a mix. On one hand, dudes kinda like Kanye. Hes not signing people to actually build up a label. Hes more so signing a support team to help his own projects. You sign to him and youre music career wont go anywhere because most of your work, your lyrics, whatever, if its good enough, theyll end up going to him instead because hes the boss. The other is that hes kinda like Em in that, he overshadows the people hes on tracks with. When Wayne, Pain, and Brown are on tracks, they feel like they compliment the artist they are making music with. When you heard an artist with Em on the track, Em always feels like his bars are more powerful and overshadow the other persons. The big difference is, Em will actually tell the other person "hey, you should work on this some more". He actually wants people to improve, and this has been stated in many interviews with people that worked with him. Em also isnt singing someones praises heavy on social media so it doesnt feel like he tossed them aside once he was done. Because most of those people who listen to those songs Drake is featured, are Drake fans and Drake fans only. They listen, but will never check that persons stuff again. The last thing is that...Drake eventually betrays most people that have a close relationship with him. Most of these guys were too new that they never actually built up anything with Drake. But if you been around him long enough it seems everyone who hes had a friendship with in the industry, at one point he betrays them

What Drake(the industry) knew is they could have (some still did) gained love and made great money without him. Organic love is always better (more profitable) than temporary likes. Drake set them up in the long run to be able to say things like, "your first number one I had to put in your hand" and "everybody got a deal, I did it without one!"

At least 5 of those artists who apparently never charted before have massive fan bases and have absolutely charted in their respected countries. Gigs, Jorja Smith and Wizkid especially are absolutely massive artists in the UK, and Wizkid in the whole of Africa (home to 1.5 billion people). Just for context, I am 27 and Goggs had the biggest song in the UK before I started school. Literally around 20 years ago. Wizkid has been massive in the UK for around 10 years, and Jorja Smith already had a hit song (probably number 1 song, though I can’t be sure) over here before Drake. Drake takes existing talent and gives it to his fan base, he’s not helping anyone career, he’s siphoning their talent. Also, Sampha is from my hometown, Croydon. He had an incredible album around 10 years ago, He didn’t even record a new song for drake, Drake just used the same song that Sampha made when I was in high school. (Not sampled, used and put a rap over it).

As a Brit, I don’t think this curse applies to the U.K. scene. I don’t think the Drake co-sign backfired with any of their careers, domestically at least. He put money in a lot of money people’s pockets and not just musically but also in the acting world through the tv drama ‘Top Boy’ - that show meant a lot to the scene culturally, and those actors careers have gone to new heights thanks to Drake supporting the culture. As he know he was an actor and roles for Black British actors as slim so many leave for America. I say that to say, anybody who says Drake acted like a vulture and took from the U.K. without giving back, that’s 🧢. The history of him showing the U.K. love is well-documented back to the beginning of his career.

@@gamerguru2924 he did put in work in the culture though, both inside and outside of music, we can’t argue that he didnt. He did that as a Canadian rapper. I can’t a name a lot of Americans rappers who hold a similar resume over an extended period of time within the U.K.’s “urban culture” or whatever you wanna call it. Drake made that effort, he didn’t have to, he wanted to, the work is there.

@@nameisamine honestly, African American culture vs UK culture just feel differently about drake…. Drake doing all this while cosplaying with a team of writers and producers. His music not authentic it’s fiction. Like he has never lived these lives or have experienced watching someone he lives live the life. Yall might be ok with that type of poser behavior out there.

This was beautiful bro, and your last sentence echoes my sentiment. It’s become cool to hate on Aubrey, if he gives you a hot feature, it’s not his job to give you a whole career. Just as we can point out those who faded, we can also find many examples of those who took advantage of that opportunity. It’s probably 50/50. It’s sounds like it’s a curse because of the number of people but he’s worked with a lot of artist, and a lot of them are successful too. So what if it’s mutually beneficial and he gains as well

It’s a deal with the devil situation, I’d imagine many of these artists are desperate for success and are pressured by drake and those in the industry to accept. While it is ultimately their choice to do so, they likely didn’t realize how drake is until after dealing with him. A good comparison is how high schoolers are pushed into going to college no matter what, then ending up in horrid debt
