both a blessing and a curse I'm surprised they've added somany reskins of characters and haven't added classic veterans of Mario Kart like WIGGLER or QUEEN BEE

I remember him being in Mario Tennis for the N64. I loved that game. I never seemed to be able to unlock Donkey Kong Jr. but I remember going into a tournament, and he was one of the opponents. I was like "that ain't diddy, that ain't donkey, who the hell is that"

In fairness, Nintendo is incredibly inconsistent about this. They've flip-flopped between modern DK being the original (this is usually done in games where he's alongside Mario), being the son of the original (well, I think only Rare has stated this, and only in DK64), or being the grandson of the original.

Diddy Kong was originally going to be DK Jr but Nintendo thought Rare's design was too different so they asked them to change it to look more like his classic design or keep the design as a new character with Rare choosing the latter.

Found this channel few days ago and already seen almost all videos. I learn a lot of cool stuff from then and they are very well researched. Already one of the best channels i discovered in 2019

I thought Nintendo lore was Donkey Kong Jr IS the current Donkey Kong now grown up, and the original Donkey Kong is now Cranky Kong.

Rare flip flopped on it a bunch of times but I believe that Nintendo's current story is that the current DK is the _son_ of DK Jr., and that Cranky Kong/Original DK is the grandfather of current DK. It's all a bit of a confusing mess though, if you ask me haha

Yes, that is indeed correct. The DK Jr. from the 80's is DK from the 90's (and later) and the original DK is Crancy. Play DKC1 again and you'll read it everywhere in Cranky's lines.

@@petervandebeek5980 its been retconned. Even in the manual for Donkey Kong Country, it says Cranky is Donkey Kongs father. But somewhere along the line Rare retconned it so Cranky is now Donkey Kong's grandpa

Clearly, Mario must've still been salty after being defeated by Donkey Kong Jr, so when he joined Mario Kart, Mario saw it as a chance to get rid of him

A few missing details: DK Jr was supposed to be in DKC1, but Rare's redesign was so drastic that Nintendo made them turn this design into a new character, Diddy Kong. Also, DK Jr. was a Mystery Mushroom costume in Mario Maker 1.

Didn't know this. Honestly, I'd have preferred they just say Diddy Kong is DK Jr. It's weird that we haven't seen DK Jr in any of the main Donkey Kong games, and now Nintendo are the ones responsible for Diddy becoming more widely known than their own creation. They should retcon it and say Diddy Kong was the one that starred in DK Jr, just like Jumpman is now called Mario. King Koopa is now Bowser, Princess Toadstool now Peach. They've changed names many times, DK Jr can now be Diddy Kong. And he wasn't really DK's son. That was never outright stated within the games anyway, so it's fine.

The OG DK is Cranky Kong, DKJR is his son and (New)DK is his grandson. And Baby DK from Super Sluggers and Yoshi's Island DS is the (New) DK when he was a baby. And since baby Mario is racing with his future self (Ala Partners in Time), it isn't strange for DKJR to appear in the future to see the races.

Correction, corrections, dodododo: The DK we've had in MK64 onward (technically DKC 1 onward) is actually the DK from Donkey Kong Country and not the OG DK, that DK we have in this modern era is the son of DK Jr, and the grandson of the original DK, who is now: Cranky Kong. So really, DK Jr is rooting for his son after time traveling into the future.

The primary debate on the topic comes from "Is the modern Donkey Kong the son or the grandson of Cranky Kong?" Some games, like the Donkey Kong Country games and others refer to DK as Cranky's grandson. Notably, DK64 refers to him as Cranky's son. Some games, like Mario Superstar Baseball and Brawl refer to him as Cranky's descendant (or, more specifically, refer to Cranky as DK's ancestor). Nintendo really hasn't helped the debate any, as thev're been quite inconsistent on the topic, themselves. The Mario vs. Donkey Kong series acts as though modern DK has always been the DK of the 1981 classic, for example. It's a huge mess, and we've never really received any definitive, official answer that puts the debate to rest and clarifies all the inconsistencies and contradictions. Of course, since these are games primarily aimed at children to enjoy, we can't really expect the company to put much stock into the lore and consistency, since children generally don't care enough about such matters to dwell on, much less debate, them, they way we older fans seeking to make things make more sense do.

CLARIFICATION: Dk Jr is actually DK's father. Cranky Kong is the Kong in the original arcade game, Jr is the one in Jr, and Modern DK (aka DK III) is the one featured in 64 onwards.

Going through the comments I've had to realise that Donkey Kong has an extensive lore to its games on par with Dark Souls series. Damn Nintendo... just sneaking this stuff in. First with the Kirby games being super freaking dark... now with extensive Donkey Kong lore.

I think it's pretty simple, the Donkey Kong Country series didn't exist yet when Super Mario Kart was in development and before those games happened Donkey Kong characters never left the arcade and therefore Donkey Kong wasn't part of the main Mario cast yet. Adding Donkey Kong Jr. to the game was nothing more than a retro throwback in 1992 people probably got about the same feeling back in the day as people got when characters like the Ice Climbers or the Duck Hunt Duo were added to Smash Bros Maybe it's hard to imagine, but Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. were on the same level during Super Mario Kart's development, and DK Jr. was probably chosen because he was more relevant as his game was newer (and just like Miyamoto stated, it was his 10th anniversary)

As someone whose favorite part of Nintendo EVER is Donkey Kong Jr. I appreciate your making this video and giving spotlight to my favorite underrated and forgotten character ever so much! When I found out years ago that DK Jr. was going to be in Double Dash but got replaced, I was absolutely livid initially. I don't have anything against Diddy and I adore him immensely, but finding out that my favorite part of Nintendo's history almost made it into my favorite game of the decade was like a banana slamma to the face. Also, if I wasn't already subscribed, your coughing over the abominations that are MORE worthless derivatives of Mario and Peach at the beginning of the video definitely would have caused me to subscribe, lol.

DK Jr. being left out by nintendo pisses me off more than any other forgotten Mario character. While characters like waluigi are at least consistent in spin off appearances, characters like birdo and spike are included in the games sparingly but still being used over the years, Pauline and King K Rool finally coming back into relevancy after many years of rarely appearing and characters like Wart and Geno who while it would be cool to see them return were only used once or twice so they're kinda not as close to us as other Mario characters. DK Jr was the only one who was just left out by Nintendo in the rain right after he had gotten his chance like wtf they actually went out of their way to remove him from double dash. And don't give me that DK jr is modern DK so he can't be in the games with him bullshit cause baby characters like baby mario appear alongside their adult counterparts in spin off games all the time. I don't hate Diddy though but he just doesn't cut it for me. He seems too cool and hip whereas DK Jr appears to be a more playful and cute child gorilla

It appears to be a bit more complicated. The Donkey Kong we know now, from Donkey Kong Country onwards is actually Donkey Kong the 3rd, as he is the grandson of Cranky Kong, the original Donkey Kong. This means that Junior is actually cheering on his son. There are several theories as to what happened to him. One being that he died, leaving Cranky to raise the modern Donkey Kong. However, it could be that they thought it was too confusing to have Donkey Kong's dad be referred to as Junior. There was a mysterious character called Fedora Kong that was going to be in Country but was left out. Some believe that this is the grown up Junior. I've personally developed my own theory. Look at what he's wearing...a leotard. What if Junior was a gymnast? This would also explain as to why he was home schooled in Donkey Kong Junior Maths. Instead of following in the family business, he got a scholarship to some fancy college with a strong gymnastics program and is now a successful gymnastics coach, perhaps at his old college. This would explain his absence and why DK3 was raised by his grandparents as Junior was busy with his gymnastics career, maybe he even competed at the Olympics or whatever the Kong equivalent might be. This would also explain why his most recent appearances have been sports based. He does love his son, but he was away a lot and his skill set doesn't fit with the family's adventuring.

Diddy Kong didn't just replace DK Jr. in Mario Kart: Double Dash, but in Donkey Kong Country as well. Diddy was initially meant to just be Rare's redesign for Jr., but Nintendo didn't like how different he looked, and told them they had to either keep the original design, or just make the redesign a new character entirely, to which they did the latter. The modern-day Donkey Kong introduced in DKC is actually DK Jr.'s son, with the original Donkey Kong from the arcade game now being known as the elderly Cranky Kong.

I’m sure there’s a million comments of this already but that’s not the OG DK in MK64, that’s his grandson, DK jr’s son. OG DK goes by Cranky Kong now

A nice video, though like many other commenters I would have liked it better had you acknowledged the DKC lore, which has Cranky as the original Donkey Kong, and the Donkey Kong Country DK as his grandson, making Junior likely to be DK's father.

I played DK jr when I was very small and I loved the game back then

Correction: Many times, you say that the Donkey Kong in Mario Kart is DK Junior's father. In reality, this Donkey Kong appears to be the same from Donkey Kong Country, which is Donkey Kong the Third. As Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong, and thus DK Junior's father. DK Junior is the father of Donkey Kong the Third, it seems. And while Cranky Kong did wear a tie in Donkey Kong for the gameboy, he still looked different than the modern day Donkey Kong.

Quick correction, modern DK's full name is Donkey Kong Jr. II. This can be found in Donkey Kong Jr. Math.

Jacques Offah there is no proof that Jr. (II) from math is Donkey Kong the Third. Junior (II) looks nothing like DKIII and is actually identical in appearance to Jr., aside from his pink colouration.

Saw him on the NES library for the switch, and saw him on the original Mario Kart on the SNES library. I was wondering who he was, so thanks!

Interesting video! I always imagined that the Donkey Kong seen in the Rare-games was DK Junior, with Cranky being the Donkey Kong from the original game.

Officially, Original DK (Cranky) is the Father of DK Jr. and the Grandfather of Rare's Modern DK.

I originally thought it was going to be Fedora Kong, the scrapped Donkey Kong Land character. Fedora Kong is an enigma, his purpose is unknown.

there is a theory that donkey kong jr is fedora kong. people say that donkey kong jr died in the banana wars and this theory states that donkey kong jr went into hiding and didn't actually die and now wears a fedora. this is because a fedora symbolizes father hood which would explain donkey kong jr being the donkey kong nows father.

The OG DK is Cranky Kong, DKJR is his son and (New)DK is his grandson. And Baby DK from Super Sluggers and Yoshi's Island DS is the (New) DK when he was a baby. And since baby Mario is racing with his future self (Ala Partners in Time), it isn't strange for DKJR to appear in the future to see the races

The effort put in to find a crumb of evidence that DK jr still existed made me chuckle. Like seriously scuba through beta, or zooming in on fans in a stadium on a version of Mario kart lol

DK Jr. never left. He grew up and became the current Donkey Kong. So in a way, he's been in every Mario Kart.

I was really hoping for kiddy kong when i clicked. DKC 3 is and probably always will be #1 on my top video games of all time, just above 2 and 1. Kiddy needs some love with his little pajama feet hanging off.

I knew about DK Jr because theres a local arcade that has it on one of those 10 in 1 machines. Also Billy Mitchell and his "legit" swapping of the Donkey Kong and Donkey King Jr arcade boards

It must be your age. Donkey Kong Junior was huge. He had a TV series where he rode around with a Fonz knockoff in a motorcycle sidecar, a breakfast cereal, all sorts of memorabilia.

In the Donkey Kong Country series, Donkey Kong as you know him, is actually Donkey Kong Jr. all grown up. The original Donkey Kong is actually Cranky Kong!

You're half-correct, officially Original DK is stated to be the *Grandfather* of Modern DK making Adult DK Jr. the Father of Modern DK (DK the 3rd). The only times Adult DK Jr. appeared was in Super Mario Kart and Mario's Tennis (Virtual Boy).

This reminded me of the game theorists video, that the current Donky Kong(From Donky Kong Country forward) is actually Donky Kong Jr. (Due to the life span of gorillas) The orginal Donky Kong had passed by the time mario kart would have come out, then in the theory of course, that means that every subsequent appearence of Donky Kong was actually DK Jr. having Dropped the Jr. Since His father had passed. (If i recal the theory correctly anyway, It's just a theory, of course, but an interesting one, and this video just reminded me of it)

I wonder if DK Junior pulled a Turbo like in Wreck it Ralph, and when his arcade machine was getting unplugged he jumped in Mario Kart . And then when he wanted some more action, he jumped into Mario Kart Double Dash, that’s when he realized he wasn’t in the roster so he got a foam cutout of himself, put it in the crowd. Then he reprogrammed himself to look like diddy kong, and ripped apart the og diddy kongs game files and made him a glitch.

I know this video came out before this happened but D.K. Jr. is playable in Mariokart TOUR and his name in the game is Donkey Kong Jr. (S.N.E.S.) with him have a 16-bit design

I'm quite fond of Mario's character in the Original Donkey Kong. He was the Everyman part of the working class. He would push himself to the limit to protect the ones he loves and to get the job done. His actions are understandable in Donkey Kong Jr. After the events of Donkey Kong Mario was not only angry at DK for kidnapping his girlfriend but he saw him as a threat and decided perhaps tasked to capture DK to make sure that he would never kidnap again. He would stop anybody from freeing him even a baby gorilla. Anger and wanting revenge are human emotions and Mario having those made him more human. Later he probably regret what he did. Perhaps his way to make up for it was through Mario Kart. Today he's mostly a blank slate to almost a disturbing level.

The Dk - Dk Jr snafu has already been pointed out but I think for SMK, Nintendo chose Jr. as Donkey Kong himself wasn't exactly "popular" until the release of DKC two years later. Jr. was really the only other DK protagonist outside of Mario at the time who is obviously the overall series namesake.

If I'm not mistaken, the donkey Kong from the arcades is actually Cranky Kong in modern games, and the character we know as Donkey Kong is Donkey Kong III

I know you say "father", but it's probably "son" since the primary depiction of DK now, the one from adventure, is the grandson of arcade game DK.

Here's the thing though. The Original DK from the arcade game is canonically proven to be Cranky Kong in the DKC Series. The DK we play as in DKC and Mario Kart and other Mario spinoffs is Cranky's Grandson. Donkey Kong Jr. is actually DKC Donkey Kong's father, not him.
