    At the 5:00 mark, Greg mentions how social media has taken us from "connected" to "hyper-connected", and then from "information overload" to "opinion overload." I think this is the #1 reason for all of the vitriolic, hate-filled communication we see today. We don't discuss ideas- we yell our opinions to the digital "faces" of our peers, all while prioritizing the wrong things (like winning the argument rather than winning a friend). While that's not full point of the video, I think it falls under the umbrella of essentialism. If we spend hours and hours throwing verbal rocks at others, where do our priorities lie?

  • @davidplantz2112

    Completely agree. Will Schoder talks about a lot of this on his explainer videos (Which are like philosophical deconstructions). His "Mr. Rogers and Power of Persuasiveness" is awesome watching. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kXh7xqaKorvcZbg.html I'd love to see Matt D'Avella sit down with Will Schoder because I think what they do on their channels crosses-over into each other.

    Totally agree. We go into these spats online thinking our opinions are right and it doesn't allow for healthy conversation. In-person communication is generally more forgiving... except over the holiday's with family.

  • @FearlessDreams

    @FearlessDreams

    5 жыл бұрын

    To be honest, I love this hyper-connectivity. I don't think it's a bad thing, I just think that we as humans are in the process of evolution with this new "thing" called the internet and we need time to adjust, but also at the same time to be tested. What is the most important for us? How can we use this connectivity to our benefit? How can we cancel out all the rest so we don't get buried under the ocean of ... stuff? Unlike the holiday with the family I think it's something we can control and actually benefit from. It's just that we need to learn how.

  • @smeddy7854

    @smeddy7854

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@FearlessDreams That's a solid point. Social media is not inherently bad- it's all about how we use it. I enjoy having immediate access to an enormous pool of talent and likeminded individuals, and being "hyper-connected" has worked well for me. However, social media absolutely contributes to the "less forgiving" speech we impose on our peers. I think you're right- it absolutely can change for the better, it will just take time and proactive measures from those who wish to see positive progression.

I feel for what I want to accomplish (living off of my LEGO youtube channel and shop) I need to outwork my competitors until I‘m in a place where I‘m successful enough to wind down without losing everything. I follow the same principles but considered myself a blend of stoic and buddhist. Through these principles I left my 6 figure job and downsized to a carry-on sized bag in pursuit of art and expression through 35+ countries. This has led me to become a "minimalist" professional filmmaker like you now. I thought about making a video comparing these philosophies, but my understanding of minimalism is low -- I hope you interview Ryan Holiday or Dalai Lama one day!

    These are also principles you find in Islam through Sufism and particularly in the notion of "Zuhd", asceticism is a huge common thread of these spiritual lifestyle (not talking about the vertical concept of "religion"), which I think is a reflection of the true nature of human beings. Just my thoughts but I think this is an important discussion in times of consumerism

    Great to find out there are other people that follow their way of living through Stoicism and Buddhism. I believe their traits have a sense of balancing each other out, therefore ourselves. I've crossed paths with brothers who study the 5% Nation Of Gods And Earths, which is also a way of thinking most commonly seen in the Afro-American community. The concept of "we are God", not in the egotistical or religious sense, rather in the sense of being conscious that everything starts and ends within oneself, is something to live by.

    I love how refreshing your content is with the vast variety of topics you touch. It is certainly a breath of fresh air to hear your honest opinion about things and your no-bullshit approach to technically everything. You are inspiring, encouraging and engaging without relying on buzzwords, false pep-talk and sounding fake. You are unique sir and I am very happy that I found your channel by watching your video about taking a cold shower for 30 days - that was when I realized that damn, this guy is up to something. You just gained yourself a new subscriber - I am almost through all of your videos - and a regular podcast listener. Thank you for inspiring me! A guy from Hungary.

    Thanks Matt M'Avella, it's at the right time that I watched your video. the part where your guest talked about the fact that we are saying "No" often, but not directly. And when not prioritizing our life, we are saying "No" to the esential things, it's just eyes opener for me. Thanks again.

    The thing is, most of us know to focus on things that are important to us in our lives. What we don't know is how to get out of that 9 to 5 Schedule that gets us to the point of being stressed out. Most people stay in that cycle, because that provides a stable income. Entrepreneurship may be the answer, but is also a lot more risky.

    This is top quality content. Thanks for that, I found it amusing. The way you put his voice over the astonishing video. The words you both choose. It hit me from the beginning just how beautiful this is and that made me stick through all the video and pay a lot of attention to the message. A really great way to approach life, I loved the idea of one basic principle that massively influences all aspects of life.

    4:35. This is where I slightly disagree. I think what’s changed has been the rise in power of Silicon Valley. They showed to the rest of the world that it is possible to make people work 70-80 hours per week and people are actually willing to do so in the name of productivity and professional value. Now that Big Tech has achieved this and literally has thousands of people working their lives away, the rest of the private sector has been copying this mentality and mindset and implementing it onto their workers. I’ve been passively looking at jobs posted on sites such as Indeed and GlassDoor, and I can’t tell you how many listings (even in the Midwest!) have a stipulation somewhere on the post or the application itself stating that overtime can and will be required on a regular basis. I would also factor in cost of living - many people now have to work multiple low-paying jobs just to make ends meet.

    The coal mine vs diamond mine analogy, for me, condenses most of what I've been reading about minimalism/essentialism. The trivial many vs the vital few...amazingly simple but profoundly important. Thank you for your effort in these videos! They are extremely helpful in prioritizing my life.
