The older shows tried to imagine what humanity COULD be, the new shows just takes humans as they are now and puts them in the future.

The discovery scenes look like something out of a star trek parody, not a real star trek.

Star Trek used to be written by well read, well educated people who understood the human condition and grappled with the issues of our existence. Now it is written by people who tweet a lot.

It's very hard to believe those non-TNG clips are actually from a professionally produced Star Trek program and not some kind of bad fan fiction.

Remember when you actually LIKED Star Trek captains instead of hoping they died by the next episode?

That “Captain” was acting like a teenage girl not a leader.

Then Barkley went on to head up a whole division of sciences in Voyager. Losing the stutter and becoming an excellent officer. Just because he had people who believed in him and saw his potential like Picard. It is easy to take on Riker’s initial approach, easy to shift a problem somewhere else. We never know how people will turn out if we never try.

Okay, I’ve never seen Discovery before, and holy shit that “this conversation is over” scene made me want to eat glass.

let us take a moment to think about how the sarcastic response of "he was an idiot" to the question about how a man you knew died under your command during the hearing about the event is literally psychopathic

I legit face palmed at the "he was an idiot". That is not a proper answer to how someone died.

TNG teaching me about Human faults, solutions to tackle them, emotional growth, maturity, in a serious manner.

I was just re-watching VOY and Barclay was in a few episodes. They were still helping him out, being patient and understanding while he relapses into Holodeck addiction while cultivating his better aspects. Even Admiral Paris was firm yet understanding of Barclays more unusual personality and theories.

As a teenager I related so heavily to Barclay. I too had crippling social anxiety and shyness and was so inspired by a future that would nurture and encourage me to excel and reach my potential.

Man, that whole Discovery thing really reminded me of the command of the submarine I served on, belittling people, never listening while just talking down to them, and generally just passing off the blame to the lower ranked instead of the leaders. As a Captain, it's your job to ensure people are developing and being engaged with properly across your entire ship, either through direct leadership on a submarine or small ship, or through several high ranking officers on a larger ship. If you have multiple failures, sailors who commit crimes, or more people leaving than staying in, then that is a direct reflection of the Captain and the way they run a ship.
