I really liked the backstory and general aesthetic of the early games. They felt exactly like a product of their time, the 90s, and I mean that in a positive way. It was the difference between Kazuya being possessed by an actual devil vs. it's some inherited genetic quirk he got. Also love the music for the earlier games, although I can never find good answers about what genres of EDM they are.

Man, this is probably my favorite game of the PS1 era. I bought an import copy from a DieHard Games store near Tacoma, WA (had to get a ride because I was 14 at the time.) Went on to play it pretty much non-stop with a buddy and we got to know every combo, every link, and every quirk by instinct. I feel as though everything coalesced in this one in a way that really hasn't happened since in the series. The music, graphics, controls, and world was such a defining leap over the first game, even from the very start. How could you not be completely enamored by the intro video on the PS1 version? I think Tekken 3 is universally known as the high-watermark of the PS1 Tekkens, maybe even the series as a whole. But that one just never clicked for me, I was so ingrained in the timing and feel of Tekken 2 that Tekken 3 felt completely alien and I couldn't dedicate the time to reprogram myself. I never really continued with the series after that, but it's good to see Tekken 2 remembered so fondly by a lot of people. Also, "Be In the Mirror" is god-tier music.

Man, this one had me feeling nostalgic. TEKKEN 2 was my first game ever that wasn’t some old pos that my Dad happen to have on his old Atari. It definitely got me into video games in the first place. Apart from the select screen, I’m still trying to figure out if the differences from my memory are arcade and home differences or just my faulty memory.

So just for fun little fact, While Kazuya technically was the first to do a proper sidestep via mist step, however he wasn't the only character that could move to the side in T2 while stood upright. Heihachi also could, but not via a mist step, we all know his nowaday HAHA run away move? BB3+4 I believe. Well he doesn't laugh in this but Hei could do it in this game that let him essentially run off and sidestep at the same time. These were the only two moves that let you avoid the flying devil laser provided you didn't hit devil out of it or run behind him.

But that heihachi intro stuck with me until I saw it again in arcade history of tekken 5(the one that made me a fan) and it would go down in history as one of the coolest days of my life.

My FAVORITE Tekken after Tekken 7 :D We used to play at this place that had ps1 consoles hidden inside arcade cabinets (and you approached the counter, asked for a game, specified time and 1 or 2 players and the lady running the place would go in the back, turn the console on, pop in the disc, then come up the front, turn the tv in the "cabinet" with one of the remotes (she had an entire bundle held together with rubberbands), open the front flap of the cabinet, pull out a pad or two and write down how long you'll be playing. And like 2-3 times a week after school we'd drop there for 1-2h session of mostly Tekken 2 (but also sometimes 1 or 3 and Souledge, MK trilogy, Toshinden 1,2 and 3, Street Fighter EX and whatever other fighting games they had). Oh, and sometimes on weekends with other friends too. We probablty spent enough money there to buy our own playstations :D

Kazuya has a move called Mist Step done by tapping forward that has him sidestep left or right based on how many frames its held (its basically random). Its because of this move that he was the only character who could sidestep in tekken 2. It seems like you think the crouch dash is called mist step

Tekken 2's arranged soundtrack is often outshined by it's better selling younger sibling but I heavily encourage anybody who hasn't listened to it to give it some time. The songs aren't the "rock, vocal orchestra and wub wub" that we know tekken for now. Emotionless Passion is on the prime example of that but other equally strong are Jun Kazama's arranged theme and Yoshimitsu's arranged theme.
