    While I liked the video, I don't like the theory of Ripley being a hero of destiny. In my mind, she's a hero of circumstance, a normal person caught in horrific situation by happenstance.

  • @TJJones-ck7gj

    @TJJones-ck7gj

    5 жыл бұрын

    Well, Circumstance is defined as "a fact or condition connected with or relevant to an event or action" and Destiny is defined as "the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future." So it's really just perspective and opinion of the viewer really. I'm sure Ripley would have felt it was circumstantial. But someone with a more reverent viewpoint could probably see it as destiny, like perhaps the company. Neither is technically wrong. And the more R. Scott adds to the prequels it certainly looks like events were moving that way. Still, an interesting thought though ^_^

  • @TJJones-ck7gj

    @TJJones-ck7gj

    @Stoneryoda 937 I could understand that, but it wouldn't necessarily imply a destiny. More so a genetic memory if anything. The same as way we have the kinds of predator/prey reactions with animals we've never met personally. Destiny would be more saying "Ellen Ripley was always meant to meet and destroy the Aliens. No one else save her would have or could have done it." In effect labeling her as a sort of chosen one to choose the simplest and most recognized of destiny's.

    That said, I don't discount the absurdity of the notion at all. If an entirely seperate colony of Aliens viewed her as a danger despite the original having been blown to hell on Acheron then it's a slight stretch. Unless we're assuming the Queens' telepathic abilities extend well beyond their control of the colony in their immediate area. Absurd again, but given this assumption I guess it's possible, if weak. Never said it was good writing lol.

    Agreed. The idea that Ripley and her blood line are destined to beat the Alien smacks far too much of the 'superhero' craze. I prefer to think of her as someone who survived multiple encounters.

    @@jhousdan Resurrection takes place in 2386 - some 300 years after the events of Alien 3. Sea of Sorrows takes place in 2497. The novel directly references the climax of Resurrection, with the Auriga crashing to Earth and destroying Paris (as in the extended edition). According to the Wiki page, 20th Century Fox initially wanted the novel to ignore the events of Alien 3 and Resurrection, but then changed their minds. James A. Moore said he was happy with that, as there were aspects of Resurrection he "really liked". Make of that what you will.

  • @chasefeller1279

    @chasefeller1279

    I think in resurrection the arigua crashed into africa or off the coast of africa and the end scene was of ripely in paris which had been decimated before that. There were a couple of inconsistencies in sea of sorrows like the year that ripely destroyed the nostromo (they used the date that hadleys hope was destroyed or vice versa) and they never touched on how the lv178 ship and mines survived the explosion from out of the shadows

  • @boblowes

    @boblowes

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@chasefeller1279Yes, there is definitely some confusion as to the final scenes of the Auriga in Alien Resurrection. It appears to crash in north Africa, and then you see Ripley-8 and Call in the ruins of Paris. I always assumed that either the explosion was so powerful that it reached across the Mediterranean, up to France and Paris but rewatching it, it seems more likely that the Auriga hit Africa, and the Betty altered course just a little, landing in Paris. There are some other inconsistencies in Sea of Sorrows, but we just have to accept these as mistakes.

    This was my theory from the very moment after completing Alien: Isolation - Ellen is purposefully misinformed. If Isolation is to be canon, that mean's they've hid many of the conflicts of Amanda with WY, so they've obviously brushed over and removed all traces of Ellen's daughter. And if you think about it, with all the hyper-sleep that goes on in the Alien universe, is it not possible to suggest that Amanda is alive and well? Ellen comes out of hyper-sleep in Aliens decades older, but having aged physically in no way. Born in 2092, and the events of the first movie take place in 2122, this makes her 30 years old. She then wakes up in the second movie in the year 2179, which now makes her 87 years old, despite still being 30 years old physically. Imagine that in Alien 5 - the rumoured movie that is now almost confirmed thanks to David Cameron's interview with IGN recently - we could possibly see the mother and daughter meet. Amanda could still be older than she appears in Isolation, but what if somehow she's gone through a similar 'hyper-oversleep'? Or even a multiple series of long hyper-sleeps? With this, we could essentially pass the torch from Ellen to Amanda in future movies.

    With all that deepspace travel and people being put in cryo-sleep all the time, I was already wondering about how this society works anyway. They must think, play and operate on so many time levels, it makes you head hurt. Have you ever read 'The Forever War'? Because that is what this mess reminds me of - in this novel humankind fights a very strange war with another alien species. They spend decades in cryo sleep, level an alien outpost, go back into cryo sleep and come back home decades, maybe even centuries later, rinse and repeat. The hero of the story is bypassing whole millennia this way and at one point, he arrives from a mission and the war is already over for a couple of centuries. So I guess with WY being the lying bastards they are, anything is possible.

    I feel like I'm in kind of a weird spot when it comes to the Alien narrative. The original trilogy, Prometheus and Covenant, and Isolation I feel were the ones that truly make up the meat of the whole story but a lot of the books, comics and other games (looking at you colonial marines) just tend to feel like glorified fanfiction. Don't get me wrong, for the most part, I find them great and they make for fun "what if" type stories, but they never seem to have something tangible enough to make me really see them as being able to live within the Alien universe proper. Maybe it's just me and my brain just doesn't work. Who knows. Either way, it would have been brilliant to see a proper game sequel to Isolation as it very easily has taken my top 3 games of all time spot and I felt the story added a good deal to overall narrative. In any case, glad to hear you well and back at it! Really love the content and the fact that there are other Alien fanboys/girls out there really makes me happy!

    I'm convinced that Burke lied to Ripley about her daughter. I say this based on the fact that both Weyland Yutini and Burke often lie to get what they want. And in that case, they didn't want Ellen Ripley to dig around about her daughter (and to eventually find out what she did against the company). Their priority was to get Ripley to accept Burke's offer. And not to be tied down by anything else on Earth.

Something of a generations series from "Amanda" and afterwards chronicling such a journey and their family legacy of man or woman they basically all happen to become exceptionally good at combating Xenomorphs and basically become the bane of their existence through the ages.

    That bit about Burke maybe lying about Ripley not having any family left is sinister and vile, but I wouldn't put it past him. It's like, he'd say something like that to reduce Ripley's hopes of getting back to "normality", to nothing. And I love that depth of how the Xenomorphs sort of feel the pain of past relatives. It's like they're completely in tune with genetic memory or something. They remember pain and suffering from decades or maybe even centuries ago.

    I think, Ripley 8 dated Ron Pearlman and they made a child after the events from Alien Resurrection... And since she had a telepathic connection to the Xenomorphs as a result of being a clone from the Alien queen and the original Ripley, she inherited those thelepathic abilities to Alan Decker. Oh, and they should film the novels "Out of the shadows" and "sea of sorrows" to get it all canon ;)

    Hello Alien Theory!! I’m a huge fan of your videos and of the alien series and universe. I’m curious as to what if the company (weyland/yutani ) had gotten a hold of the xenomorph? Would they have been able to successfully control them and use them as what they called “bio-weapon”.

    In one of the early ALIENS comics which retconned ALIEN 3, Ripley was forced to return to the derelict. She fell into a opening in the ship and somehow interfaced with the ship itself. It also linked her to the hive collective and the Queen Mother. It later turned out the Engineers purposefully did all this so they can get Earth infested and be lead there to begin terraforming the planet.

    I'm very anxious to see what they do with Decker going forward... Sea of Sorrows ended on a major cliffhanger. That trilogy of books was well-written, and the audio dramas were great, the woman that voiced Ripley was a vitual copy of Sigourney Weaver's voice. In River of Pain, I thought the guy playing Burke sounded more like Goreman than a then-30 years older William Hope did, though. While we can figure none of Ripley's ancestors were part of the prequels (given no survivors going back to earth... unless perhaps there were unmentioned siblings), it would be interesting to know if perhaps someone from AVP was a distant relation to her. I don't care much for the idea of a "hero of destiny" either, as the idea of it all being circumstantial makes it more terrifying and tragic. Just my opinion though.

    The only guarantee we have of Amanda’s future is her appearances in the comics (which at the time of writing is the Alien: Rescue), since as you say Burke is an unreliable narrator when dealing with Ripley. It’s also possible that while Decker is a descendant of the Ripley bloodline, he’s not a direct descendant of Ellen and Amanda. A quick consult of Ellen Ripley’s Xenopedia page doesn’t say anything about her immediate family beyond Amanda, Amanda’s father (a man called Alex who doesn’t even have his own page) and second husband Paul Carter (most information about him comes from the Isolation novelisation). It’s possible she may have siblings, which would still allow for Decker to have enough genetic inheritance to be recognised as a Ripley. It is also plausible Burke lied about Amanda not having children in order to manipulate Ripley, so that she wouldn’t seek them out and have less reason to go back to LV-426. For all we know Amanda had children. Given her distrust of Weyland-Yutani and the dangerous situations she was in, it’s possible she stopped spending time with her child(ren) to protect them from danger and WY, another way she was like her own mother in that they lost out on experiencing motherhood.

    My theory is that maybe Ripley 8 could be why decker has a direct empathic link to the Xenomorphs, she was spliced with their dna over a hundred years ago after all. She had some kids and they got married and so on, continuing the bloodline until we meet decker.

    Assuming there is some "Destroyer" thing going on, and that Decker is a descendent in some way, I definitely don't think every single Xenomorph in the galaxy sees Ripley as "The Destroyer", only the ones on LV-128. They managed to survive the "attack" of Ripley and the crew of the Marion; assuming the Xenomorphs do share genetic memories, then it could be that some memory of her scent has remained in their shared consciousness for hundreds of years. I haven't read this book yet, though. I'm sure I'll draw some new conclusions once I do.

    🖖🏻OMG!!! AT You are the BEST! I have been waiting for you to talk about Allen Decker!!!! it’s one of my favoite stories in the Alien: Extended Universe! I have three theories about how he could be a descendent! (One is kinda silly but I will include it anyway! Ok 1. He descendent of Ripely 8 ( quite a few people have suggested this already) Cuz in the book Alien resurrection Ripley 8 is telepathically linked to the genetically engineered hive. 2. Amanda had child in secret and hid it for obvious reasons. And finally 3. (my wild silly theory) In Alien Out of the Shadows we meet Hooper and during the story he an Ripply hit it off. What if she slept with him and got pregnant? The hyper sleep would have slowed the pregnancy and what if they kept her asleep took the child? *Spoiler alert* in Alien out of the shadows they wipe her memory of having been to the planet. They could have wiped he memory of having a baby! I know it’s a silly theory but everyone one commenting on this Channel are very courteous and open minded! Keep the videos coming!👩🏻‍🦰

    I honestly don’t think there’s anything directly unique about Ripley or her genes. Rather, her name is something of power, in the same way the title of “chosen undead” is in dark souls. Ripley is the name of an alien slayer not because every one of them is a Ripley, but Ripley was the first, and the most famous.
