"Water brings life, fire brings destruction". I feel like that falls under "the grass is greener on the other side" since water can also bring great destruction... and fire can bring life.
@brandonlyon730

Indeed, fire can be destructive and kill life but have bring forth new life as well. A forest fire for example can be seen as destructive, but it also an opportunity for old trees and plants to die off and there ashes will fertilize the ground to allow new trees to grow. Turning something old and decaying and turned it into a place for new life to grow.
@somedudewatchintv5297

While It's true fire can bring life and water bring destruction the natural state of the 2 elements are how he described. Most people won't have to experience a tidal wave or a huricane and those that do won't deal with it daily or anything. Fire needs to be tightly controled or it absolutely will destroy whatever is in it's path where water needs special circumstances to be lethal. Edit: spelling

I fully believe Roku knew Aang was going to mess up and needed to be taught the hard way why the elements should be learned in the correct order. Aang got the hang of Waterbending a little bit too easy and assumed he could do the same with Firebending, not understanding that a whole different mentality comes with controlling fire. You can tell that Jeong Jeong has seen a whole lot of things in his time in the Fire Nation navy that he wished he didn't. He also told Aang the *same thing* Iroh told Zuko in episode 1. Control of Firebending comes from breath control. That is the basic of all Firebending basics, but both Aang and Zuko wanted more advanced techniques before they were ready.
@sammydray5919
3 жыл бұрын
So Roku just risked everyone around Aang just to teach him a lesson the harsh way instead of even trying to teach him the lesson the normal way before resorting to something like that??? Aang could have very easily killed Katara and even if he didn't, he could have scarred her if she hadn't awoken her healing powers. He of all people should have known just how dangerous fire can be if not properly controlled. Yet he insisted Aang go on knowing he would fail and possibly endanger others. Wow that makes Roku look like an asshole. Either that or he genuinely believed Aang could do it and didn't expect a result like this. So in all honesty I dont wanna believe that Roku knew Aang was gonna mess up but went ahead anyway because it SEVERELY damages his character.

I think Roku was just flat out wrong. In one of the comics (spoiler alert) Aang gets sick of Roku giving him bad advice, so he cuts him off as a mentor. Aang was impatient and definitely not ready, and like any kid that doesn't know any better, he really screwed things up because of it. I'm sure this was a great and hard learning moment for him though, and he honestly needed it. Fire isn't just destruction, it's also life. Of course, most likely due to his time in the Fire Nation army and what he had to do, Jeong Jeong developed a really extreme and negative view on firebending in general. I don't blame him for feeling that way though, but I think that's also why he wasn't suited to be Aang's firebending teacher in the long term. Firebending is based on Northern Shaolin martial arts, which is an external style based on extending the body and long, aggressive techniques that explode and drive through the opponent. Shaolin teaches students to use their energy to penetrate their opponents, sending it forward. Like fire, it is aggressive, expanding, and extravagant. Katara with the healing FTW :)

This episode and the season finale really show how powerful a master bender can be. Trust me, you don't fuck around with the masters.
The line where he goes “you want to stop breathing?!” Cracked me up too.
the thing about Jeong Jeong's character is that he focuses solely on the bad aspects of firebending, so much so, that he completely forgets that the other elements can cause great destruction as well. yes, fire is living, but it isn't straight away a bad thing
The problem Aang has with the fire is that he tried to move it like air. Proof that he really isn’t ready.
its actually crazy how aang temporarily quits firebending like he says until later in the show

The show does a great job of showing peoples’ misunderstanding of fire bending. Jeong jeong saying that it “only brings destruction and pain” and later when Zuko and Aang meet the dragons they discover that it is meant to bring life. Throughout the beginning of the show, fire bending is thought to be evil because of what the fire nation did, but as the show progresses they realize that fire bending is just as important as the other elements.
