This whole show has demonstrated how the hightowers are a thorn in the side of house targaryen....because the only major ppl that have died have mostly been targaryeons...as a whole it's been targaryens and 2 loyal soldier to said house... Daemon was the only one who offered a PROPER plan to end the war before it began killing dragons. Meleys and Caraxes would have taken down Vhagar. You reap what you sow. Also they should have sent other dragons even if it was to scout/observe - sending a lone dragon was the dumbest thing they could do.

Yall got it wrong. Cole and Aemonds plan was to let them send a dragon and attack it with Vhagar. Aegon was not supposed to be there. It was a trap. But Aemond used it as an opportunity to kill two dragons with one stone. Rhaenyra did not think Rhaenys was going to die she just didn’t want to send her closest advisor

I think that was pretty clear in s2ep2 when Aegon was bawling for his dead son and Alicent did/said nothing to comfort him, but it makes complete sense and is passed down because of how little Otto gave a damn about listening to her problems lol. But yeah, definitely better ways she could've handled telling Aegon to learn from others. It really wasn't necessary to add things like "maybe you'll be half a king your dad was" and "do nothing". Delivery is really important.

@@johans3164 No it's Viserys. He had so many options, Marry Rhaenyra to Daemon and name Daemon heir. Marry Aegon to Rhaenyra and name either of them heir. Or hell, he could've even changed the laws so that a woman can legally inherit the throne so Rhaenyra has a better claim. Viserys was not the worst Targaryen king, but he definitely was the smartest.

I feel like y’all missed it but the conversation between Aemond & Aegon during the council meeting WAS meant to embarrass Aegon…because he can’t speak High Valyrian lol. It wasn’t Aegon just wanting war - he literally couldn’t respond back in HV because he can’t speak it fluently (which Aemond knew.) I DO think Aegon can understand it for the most part though. Aemond wanted to embarrass Aegon by demonstrating to the council their “Targaryen ruler/the eldest son” can’t even speak the language the Targaryen’s are known for.

Rhaenys chose to stay because of Rhaenyra's situation. The little support she has needs her dragons to defend them. Rhaenys knows this. She represents the queen as one of her dragonriders so she can't flee. "If the Queen flees at the first sign of trouble, why should we support her against these overwhelming odds?" Also, as Aemond said, Rook's Rest is vital since the Blacks losing it cuts Dragonstone off from Westeros. The blacks must defend it. Lastly, Meleys is the Blacks best dragon. She's the most capable of harming Vhagar. Aegon & Aemond falling would be a huge victory despite the risk. Rhaenys knew this and bravely fought.

only fools would have attacked Vhagar alone. In order to kill Vhagar you need Meleys+Caraxex+some other dragon just to be sure. Even if you lose 2 dragons, but still manage to kill Vhagar, I'd say its appropriate outcome for the battle. Rhaenys needed to come back to dragonstone, get some help from other dragonriders and pretty much win the war right here, right now

@Kishinist in the books, it was implied that if it was a 1v1 between Meleys and Vhagar, then Meleys could have stood a chance. Yes, Vhagar is the largest and has brute strength, but she's also the slowest, and Meleys is the fastest dragon in the realm. I do want to mention that there is also Vermithor. He is the second largest dragon at the time of the dance and does pose a threat to Vhagar.

I just realized, with the two omens. The first omen when Alicent dropped the dragon, it broke off a wing, yet it was intact. Signifying Aegon’s dragon. At the end it was still alive, barely, with Aegon TBD. The second omen is with Rhaenys. When Aegon tipped over the dragon jug, it shattered completely, signifying Rhaenys and Meleys’ death.

You dont have to speak high valryian to dragons, thats just what they do. Its the same way a pet dog only understands the language of its owner. Most dragon riders and dragon Guards speak high Valyrian to their dragons, but they dont have to we’ve seen dragons can understand common tongue

I like that this show actually shows that it takes a long time to get from place to place. The passage of time is really felt. You can also see who's dragons are battle tested and who isn't. Meleys has really good strategy when fighting. Not the biggest but this claws and talons are super sharp.

It's speculated that she may have assisted in the Stepstones or in the revenge for Rhaenys' father's death on Tarth. Who knows? But she is the oldest of the Black dragons, so she's considered the most experienced in general.

Guys, Rhaenyra would NEVER have sent Rhaenys if she knew Aegon's army would send out a dragon like Vhagar to the battlefield since he usually protects Kings Landing lol. She didn't want to send Jace because he's literally inexperienced and also she didn't want to lose another son so quickly to war. She was completely confident in Rhaenys. NOBODY expected Aemond to show up, nor did they expect Aegon to show up. Losing a dragon is a MASSIVE loss for either side.

That's what bothers me. I feel like Daemon would've anticipated Vhagar would likely be there if he was still on the council. It would be a suicide mission for Cole to not have a dragon there since dragonstone is just across the bay and they should have prepared for that possibility.

I think that she knew that was a possibility, that's why she sent her biggest dragon. They were backed into a corner. If Daemon was there, he would have went with Rhaenys. In my opinion Rhaenys and Rhaenyra knew it was a suicide mission.

Rhaenyra didn't know the Greens would have sent a dragon. Her initial idea was to go herself. They all expect the Greens to keep their dragons at Kingslanding to protect themselves. It's why Aemond and Cole's plan is kinda ingenious. The whole attack on Rooks Rest is to lure a dragon out of Dragonstone, painting a massive target on Cole and the main Green Army. Only for Aemond and his tactical nuke of a dragon to annihilate any dragon sent by the Blacks.

I don't get where you guys are getting Rhaenyra and co thinking Rhaenys was going on a suicide mission. It's pretty clear that no one expected the Greens to give up their strongest defence of King's Landing and send them to a little castle battle.

My dad often falls asleep whenever we watch shit together but this episode was the first time he asked to rewatch a part because he missed the dragon fight

I normally have a similar problem with my mom, but she's normally really good about staying awake for House of the Dragon. She fell asleep while watching this episode though right before the Dragon fight. I had no issue rewinding for her to watch.

one of the things I've really liked is the bonds between these targaryans and their dragons. Specifically the scene of Aegon preparing with Sunfyre, like even Aegon has an otherworldly relationship with this living nuke. Really cool and gives him a little credit because at the end of the day he IS one of them.

I’m team black all the way, but I feel the most sorry for Aegon. People say he craves power when really he just wants love. The few times we see him truly happy is with his son, and now that his boy is dead we see that only his dragon Sunfyre fills that role. Alicent and the other green members act like Aegon owes them some huge favor and that he should be greatful, but he didn’t want that role, he screamed he didn’t want to be king. And now they all belittle him because he isn’t the perfect puppet. Aegon feels way too deeply and he drinks to numb himself from his front emotions. Alicent said literally the worst words to him when he asked for help. It was sad too when he just told her that he just moved the books and not had them destroyed, she really is a terrible mother.

She is the one who had beaten her son when he said he won't challenge his sister's claim. She is the one who said Aegon can bully his brother but just in private, he didn't have to do it in front of other people especially Rhaenyra's children. I don’t think that rhaenys declared herself dead, but she knew that she had to biggest dragon and was the best rider, she had the best chance to take out vhagar, and also it was her mission to make sure that they didn’t take the castle.

The scenes of aemond talking in high valyrian to his brother was to show us that aegon doesn't speak it and can say just few words which means he's unfit to be a Targaryen king, and he's more of a Hightower , he doesn't Care about his Targaryen blood or history

Not embracing his heritage as a Targaryen is one of them. A big one of them. ALL Targaryens know High Valyrian and are versed in their family's history. Aegon's the first not to give a shit. That says something.

I think Rhaenys wasn't going to leave without trying her damn hardest to kill (or at the very least severely wound) Vahagar. She knows that as long as Vahagar lives, the Blacks have no chance of winning the war against the Greens. Even if they all end up dead in the end, one house might go out "victoriously" and Rhaenys had made up her mind that it would be them. I also think that with her family separated (Corlys off to sea again, Baela at risk of being shot out of the sky at any moment, and Rhaena sent away to Pentos) there wasn't much left keeping her in Dragonstone. She fought bravely and admirably until the very end, and with all of her past years of warring behind her both she and Meleys may finally rest. ❤

Rhaenys was not going back a second time, when she turned Meleys around, they were heading back towards Dragonstone, which was across the water. That's why Aemond and Vhagar hid there.

Aegon tried to literally tried to learn from Alicent in that scene, and all she did was demean him.

25:52 At first I didn’t understand why she kept turning back but I think that’s exactly why. It was war and at that moment Rhaenys wasn’t a princess, she was a soldier. Her mission/duty was to protect the castle and do as much damage to the enemy as she could, no matter what. Plus taking Vhagar out was wayyy too important. Who knows when or if Daemon would return? Rhaenys had to keep trying right then and there. Besides, Meleys was doing extremely well in the battle. She absolutely obliterated Sunfyre and won that first 1v1 with Vhagar. She still had a fairly decent chance to do some serious damage. I think the outcome would’ve been very different if Aemond didn’t go for that sneak attack. The situation was extremely complex but I think that’s the core of it. She had to keep fighting no matter what. Rhaenys was my favorite character in the show and Meleys was my favorite dragon and the coolest looking one imo. I wish they had retreated, but I understand why they didn’t. Rip Rhaenys the queen who should have been.

it doesnt make sense. Vhagar is supposed to be killed by 2-3 dragons at least. Little castle is x1000 less imprtant, than Rhainys' and Meleys'

@@Kishinistno, Vaghar isn’t supposed to be killed by 2-3 dragons. The ‘historians’ stated that Meleys alone would take out Vaghar and she would have done a lot more damage or killed Vaghar if it wasn’t for that sneak attack.

calling himself King isn't exactly wrong if you look in the perspective correctly. Alicent was called Queen and Your Grance while being married to Viserys. So was Cersei and Margery in GoT.

Bruv. His Queen herself calls him prince and not king. So what right does he have to give himself a higher title than what his ruler gives him? There is a reason king consorts are called princes and not kings. King is a higher title than Queen, so if a Queen sits the throne, she cannot have her king consort be called King as that gives him more authority than her. And only a King and Queen are called Your Grace. King consort/princes are not called that so no, Daemon is doing something wrong.

I feel like Daemon demanding to be called “your grace” isn’t treason cause you generally would call a queen “your grace” in this world afaik and a king consort is basically that

Rhaenys had to defend Rook's Rest. It was mentioned that it was an important mainland area for Dragonstone/Team Black but I also think that she kept going to try to injure/kill Vhagar to give Team Black an advantage in the war to come. She stayed longer to confirm the kill and mission. She said it herself that her dragon has battle experience and the largest they had... but she went in knowing it was a battle to the death. I still wish they survived. Her and her dragon exchanging last looks hurt so much 😭 Fucking granny Vhagar with her sneak attacks and the plan to draw out a team black dragon worked. Theres so many things we could pick at on lack of planning and patience for both sides but the point of this fight was to show how devastating dragon war is.

If she flees it could be a bad look on team black and turn some supporters away. If she stays she could potentially end the biggest issue in the war (granny Vhagar) and save her loved ones from having to take on Vhagar. She could also be considering what everyone's been saying about why she didn't end it when she had the chance. Her death can also be the push and precaution that Team Black needs.

Wow y'all are good, It didn't clcik in my head that the dragon imagery being destroyed was foreshadowing. The one Alicent drops symbolizes Sunfyre being wounded and the dragon glassware that Aegon knocked over symbolizes Meleys dying. I didn't catch that the first time I watched this episode! Like, I knew who was going to die this episode because I'm familiar with the source material, like as soon as they mentioned Rooks Rest, I knew, oh yeah, they're going to die here. I just didn't catch the foreshadowing in those specific scenes.

I feel disgusting for even saying this but I kinda feel bad for Aegon. On one hand he actually seems to want to rule, we can tell from how he acted with the small folk. But everyone around him just sees him as a pawn and some dumb useless kid. Which he is. But no one actually cares enough to teach him how to rule. They just wanna use him

I don't think Rhaenys intended to die, she just knew that if a dragon has to go, it makes sense to be her. Rhaenyra is the Queen, Jace is her heir and Rhaenys knows that she would never risk another son. She knows that she's the best option, they wouldn't sacrifice one of the best allies and one of the biggest dragons for nothing. My guess for why Rhaenys turns around knowing she'll prob die is because she'd take even a small chance of ending the war here. She's been behind Rhaenyra's pushes for peace. She's willing to put her life on the line for a shot at killing Vhagar (her dragon did do a bit of damage after all!) or a more likely way of winning would be to kill Aemond. She takes the chance, knew it was curtains the second she sees Vhagar, but tries her best because theres just the smallest chance she can draw or at least seriously damage Vhagar for her team

No one knew about the plan (Vhagar ambush) except for Aemond and Cole, not even the council. Aegon was pushed to go because of the way Alicent has been treating him. He never wanted to be king and he Expressed it many times , he even said he's not fit to rule. Yet they dragged him and made him King without even guiding him properly nor training him to rule. So I don't really blame Aegon for feeling frustrated especially when everyone is making him feel Insignificant, they just want him to sit and do nothing while they manipulate everything... I feel bad for him

Rhaanyra did not know Rhaenys was going to die because nobody knew that Criston had a trap laid out for them, Rhaenyra just wanted to handle things swiftly using one of the dragons but was caught lacking

Daemon's side quest isn't that wasteful because he already knows the Riverlands are key to winning the war since the Lannisters (and Westerlands) and Hightowers (and The Reach) are on the side of the greens. Harrenhal is the largest castle so he's trying to have another stronghold. In the first episode this season Alicent thought that Aegon would kind of get over being king but since his son was killed, Aegon has been acting irrationally (in her eyes) so she is lashing out on him. The plan was always to kind of make Aegon a puppet until he got some sense but when he fired Otto that's when he got her pubes all tinged.

That episode reeked of Death since the opening

Daemon is King Consort (husband of the Queen ruler) so yes, he should be called Your Grace if you accept Rhaenyra as queen.

No, Rhaenyra did not expect Rhaenys to die. If anything she knew Rhaenys and Meleys are battle tested and if anyone was going to survive a dragon fight it would be her. That's why she actually told her son he lacked experience she was truthful with that, if he had experience, she would have let him go. She came to the conclusion that it's war or death, sparing her son from battle is not on her mind, she sent the babies away, if she wanted to spare him, she would have forced him to leave too.

Dragons falling and exploding makes so much sense because they got organs full of fire

3:10 why would it be treason? The husband of a queen is a king. They even add the consort to make clear who the ruler is.

Rhaenyra gotta switch out of mommy mode and be the queen. There was nothing preventing her from sending both Rhaenys and Jace; Daemon said in episode 1 that one dragon is not enough for Vhagar. It's war time now, you don't have enough dragonriders to keep people sidelined because they "lack experience."

I didn't think I would feel pity for Aegon in this, but I do. Aemond's use of High Valarian during the council meeting showed that Aegon's understanding of the language is basic at best, it is clear that he didn't study it as well as his brother, just like he didn't learn many things, and then to have Alicent basically tell him he was taught just enough to be her, the council's and Otto's puppet, it was no wonder that he lashed out so foolishly.

I think some people are missing the complexity in Aegon's character. I think he doesn't care about the histories or ruling because he was never considered for that position. Of course he never took that seriously because Viserys probably didn't share the importance of it the way he did with Rhaenyra (his heir). If Aegon was prepped and guided by Viserys from the start, Aegon would have felt worthy/ important of something and he would've likely taken it seriously. When everyone thought Viserys would name Aegon as heir, remember how aimless Rhaenyra became. "No one is here for me." That's basically Aegon's whole life. Aemond is only more educated because he was bullied and that drove him to prove himself. And what people miss is that Alicent wasn't imparting wisdom in that scene. She wasn't saying shut up and learn. She was saying, shut up because you have nothing useful to contribute. I'm not surprised Aegon lashed out either...

"On accident", like Alicent wasn't moved by greed and envy against Rhaenyra. Part of it was an accident, it was an excuse.

Rhaenys put up a good fight she didn't want to go back home because she knew there would be a slim chance she could've beat Aemond and Vhagar and take out the greens wincon and she was willing to take that risk for it but I'm 100% certain if Meleys and Vhagar had continued to 1 v 1 head on Meleys would've won, the fact that she use her speed to fly under Vhagar then got caught, clawed her up, then manage to take Vhagar the second biggest dragon to the ground with her then manage to fly back up was very impressive,Vhagar only won due to cheap shot tactics by Aemond going behind the mountain and waiting.
