    I love that y’all picked up on the symbolism behind Zuko and Iroh cutting their hair! To shed a little more light, I’m reading Rise of Kyoshi rn, and there’s a paragraph that goes into this: “In the Fire Nation, hair was heavily linked with honor. Sometimes the losers of an important Agni Kai would shave parts of their head bald, laying patches of their scalp bare to symbolize an extra level of humility from their defeat, but the topknot was always sacred. It was never touched except in circumstances akin to death.” I believe them cutting their hair WAS akin to death. Death and rebirth with their new identities as Earth Kingdom refugees. Super interesting!

  • @kirahimee

    @kirahimee

    4 жыл бұрын

    Am ber it also likely draws from some of Japanese history as well! Topknots were usually associated with nobility or the samurai class in feudal japan, and like you said cutting one off was a way to renounce your status or honor. I know the inspiration for the fire nation also takes from Chinese and Korean culture,but that's less of my specialty lol

So they probably have a limit to how much energy can pass through their body without harming themselves. Also, During sozin's comet, Aang was visibly in pain from having to redirect Ozai's supersozin lightning bolt, while Zuko looked more in control and tempered when Ozai hit him with a regular lightning bolt.

Unnecessary retcons, pointless subplots and love triangles that go nowhere, turning bending into superpowers and demystifying them completely. 1 good Book of Korra doesn't match the entire series up with Last Airbender. The Avatar has to travel to each nation and learn the elements again in each new life in order to understand the other nations and not just the one they were born into. His job is to keep the balance and he needs his own personal experience to do that, not just the memories of the past. Also it takes time and discipline to control the Avatar State. Aang has no control over what he's doing when he's like that.

    Azula is finally here, and her "Tides" monologue did such a fantastic job introducing what kind of character she is overall! She has presence and she's someone you shouldn't cross or disappoint. I remember this honestly made me feel so excited for this season because now we had such a frightening foe in play. No offense to Zhao and Zuko, but the both of them combined are basically kittens compared to Azula (as you can see lol). With that said, she's still no match for Iroh xD As for what the General did here, I understand how desperate he must be in wanting to end the war quickly, but this was basically the wrong way to go about it. His treatment of Aang at the end there was also pretty downright horrible. He was essentially using and emotionally manipulating a child just to force him into the Avatar State. Aang may be the Avatar but he is not a tool for someone to toy with. Seeing Aang crying like that broke my heart. Angry Aang is scary but this was like both scary and sad at the same time.

    Yes but unfortunately her statement is foolish, since, as depicted in the episode before this one, you basically cannot mess with the ocean. You don’t get to go somewhere unless the ocean lets you, ya feel me? Azula is basically saying she’ll kill the captain for nothing, just because he was telling her an important piece of information which he very clearly knows more about. If I was that captain, I woulda been like “alright, if you really wanna die a horrible watery death be my fuckin guest.” I wouldn’t even care if I got turned into a lightbulb after saying that 😂

    @@cecethequietlizard8706 LOL oh I definitely feel ya! Even so, I still think this moment was a very strong introduction to her character. It not only shows she's someone not to cross based on the Captain's fear of her, but also her need and demand for perfection no matter the cost...which as we know later, it is what causes her downfall because of how fragile she really is. When that illusion of perfection for her breaks.

    From just one interaction with his sister, Zuko got a whole lot more depth. He acts like a real abuse victim and shows signs of wanting affection from the abuser and making excuses for their behavior at the first sign of being let back in. Also, it's nice that this episode makes it clear that it's not just the Fire Nation military that the group has to watch out for. General Fong is so thirsty to get the war finished that he wants the Avatar to act not the bridge between worlds, not the medium among all four nations, but as "the ultimate weapon." Each generation of Benders creates something new. The Avatar State can't give someone knowledge of something that doesn't yet exist.

Since the fire nation takes a lot of influence from Imperial Japan, and modern day Japan wants pretend that part in there history didn't happen as much as possible due to all the horrible things they did in that era (colonialism, mass genocide, destruction and war, etc) so having a shows antagonists be basically Imperial Japan wouldn't sit well with them.

    There's been a Japanese dub for Avatar since at least 2008, if I remember correctly. I think it ended after book 2 and then they picked it up again after a few years. A lot of people are talking about it now because it's easier to find the full series online, with places like Amazon Japan hosting their dub.

    They coded the Avatar State in this episode as a nuclear explosion. The way the gale force winds pushes all the dust and Earth back, and the vacuum and negative pressure that the shock wave created brings all the air _back_ in towards the explosion with the same force. It's exactly what happens by a mushroom cloud right outside of the "instant vaporization" zone, it's on video and they animated it to look just like it.

    Because they were trying to draw out the Avatar state. They weren't trying to KILL him, just pressure him. Not like they could've predicted he'd go out of control, and as shown earlier, their side has suffered significant losses. At that point it's pretty much a "we're willing to try whatever" scenario.

  • @johnwalker1058

    Probably in their perspective, they're also just war-weary and tired of fighting endless battle after battle with the Fire Nation. They are presented with what seems like a nice, convenient shortcut to ending the war, finally, once and for all, by getting towards figuring out a way to force the Avatar into the Avatar State on command. Plus, probably very few people, if anyone, knows that the weakness of the Avatar State is that the Avatar ceases to exist and forever breaks/loses the reincarnation cycle if the Avatar dies while in the Avatar State. So, it's not so much about turning on the Avatar, but they probably see it as getting a way to make up for the Avatar being gone for a century, and then having a shortcut to replace the long and difficult road of mastering the elements, while trying to end the war earlier so that fewer of their people die and lands of their kingdom are lost to a colonizing, war-mongering nation. - - - (Yes, what they were doing is wrong, and "just following orders" doesn't justify it. This was meant to be an exploration of where they might of been coming from. But yes, an explanation =/= a justification.)

    Sometimes you forget until it's staring you in the face like this episode but... these are just kids. Aang, Katara, Soka, Zuko, and even Azula are just kids and they are going through a war and have trama. This show also does a really good job of showing that sometimes the adults in your life , like Zuko and Azula's father, are not there with the best intentions. With Horikoshi-sensei being really open with his references and inspiration (Naruto, Star Wars, Marvel specifically with Spiderman, etc), he would have no real reason to lie specifically about Avatar. I mean, why deny Avatar specifically compared to the rest in which he openly mentions? Obviously Avatar has eastern influences in the story and they took things from Asian cultures to implement so it is not that unbelievable in that regard when you consider those factors. Reincarnation is obviously Asian influenced, Also Avatar was not widely known to be available/translated for areas like Japan until later on. Many Japanese have gone on the record of saying they were also unfamiliar with Avatar as well (for example: it was more recently available on Japanese Netflix around 2018). He was more likely inspired by Naruto since he has openly stated Naruto being an inspiration. Todoroki has similarities to Gaara from Naruto. Also potentially things like Flame of Recca and Hitman Reborn which are more popular in Japan with some of those 'Avatar-like' similarities. At least I will give him the benefit of the doubt especially based on him crediting his other sources very openly.
