When I saw this film the first time I remember being struck by the Green Berets thousand yard stare. This scene really moved me.

Saw the movie in theater last summer. I wondered why the Green Beret was being so cold even though they’re military like him. After watching the whole movie, I thought back about the guy and understood him. He’d seen it all.

Very similar to the scene in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) when Paul comes back home from WWI and visits the next round of eager soldiers at the recruitment classroom where he came from.

Deployment bars not service stripes. At least six months' deployed per bar. So three year's minimum deployed in Vietnam. Back then, called overseas service bars and tours not deployments like today. Well, that's what they look to me.

He’s in his uniform so he must have known he’d get all kinds of attention. Maybe he just didn’t care or maybe he wanted to have this interaction. Who knows how to read it. It’s a strange combination of being proud of your unit and hating the war.

@@Insecthouse Special Forces soldiers are a lot more discreet than that. They aren't called the "Quiet Professionals" for nothing. In other words, they are not "show-offs", and usually shun public recognition. I think this whole scene was just the filmmaker's fug up.

Most Vietnam war movies are garbage in the sense that they are filmed as if we already know the outcome of the war. Let’s assume this scene would have taken place around 1965/1966 this Green Beret would have been like, “Yeah, fuck commies. Get over there and kill them and bring western democracy to south east Asia!” If it were 1972/1973 he might have been more inline with this scene. It’s also the lie that Vietnam vets and those alike tell over and over again about the draft. According to the history channel and google only about 20-25% were drafted. Most Vietnam vets would have you believe they all were drafted… I say this as an Afghan Vet (wounded 5 times and two tours there) that loves Vietnam vets. These movies are garbage and they (the Vietnam vet culture) took on this whole persona…
