Michael Cimino on THE DEER HUNTER (1978)

In this archival interview, director Michael Cimino discusses the genesis of The Deer Hunter, how and why at the time working-class Americans were unjustifiably maligned by the mainstream press as being right-wing, the lasting scars that the war in Vietnam left them with, his intention to provide the film with a strong documentary appearance and how it was reinforced by specific lensing and editing choices, the management of the dialog and the music (some of the dialog was intentionally obscured to enhance realism), etc. The interview first aired as part of ITV's South Bank Show, hosted by Melvyn Bragg, on February 25, 1979.

Perhaps my favorite film of all time. Gut wrenching, some of the greatest performances ever given on film.

Cimino pulls no punches and he brings out the futility of war by demonstrating life in its cheapest, violent, senseless forms. The cast is second to none and the talent demonstrated deserves permanent recognition. TY Mr.Cimino and associates for a timeless, classic American movie addressing the horrors of war in its most violent form.

What a great interview. The reality of this film is so stark, because I knew guys like this, working in steel, hanging out in bars, being regular middle class people, they do indeed bear the brunt of responsibility for our stupid wars.
