Opie & Anthony w/ Patrice Oneal - The Deer Hunter

Ойын-сауық

Opie, Anthony and the great Patrice Oneal watch the Russian roulette scene from The Deer Hunter. Arguably the greatest acting scene ever by Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken.

    Unforgettable. Changes the way you think about things. I never want to be anywhere near shit like that. De Niro takes it waaaay beyond mere performance...I was scarred just watching this; what would it feel like ACTING it...? Just wow.

    Yea my father was a Vietnam Veteran. He served two tours . One as a field medic and the other as a medic on an evac helicopter. Based out of Dak To. He hated all of these Vietnam movies. Apocalypse Now, Deer Hunter especially. He said they were some “a**holes made up story” about what the war was like. The only war Movie he ever said he liked to me was The Thin Red Line. But this crap, he really disliked it. God Bless our veterans.

    The head VC in black, was a replacement actor from the local area where they were shooting the movie. The original actor didn't want to slap the two captive actors, his replacement apparently didn't like the Americans being there and had no problem hitting DeNiro in these scenes, so DeNiro probably wanted to really hit him back after awhile. You can feel the tension. Great movie.

I can't stand people who bitched about how this never actually happened,. No shit, it's a damn movie, and you sit through 2 hours of filler just to see this part. Though I would argue there's no way they wouldn't have gotten shot at least once. It's equally funny in 2023 to listen to Anthony now make fun of Deniro.

    This scene never added up for me. HOW does he know he’s got one in the chamber, as Anthony so eloquently stated? It’s a six shooter. They put three bullets in, and clicked it twice. What if deniro pointed it at the slap guy and it clicked?

  • @RodneyD

    @RodneyD

    5 жыл бұрын

    ghostdog2041 That’s the point. Deniro didn’t know but the odds were high that the chamber was most likely loaded since the trigger was pulled twice. At that point De nior had no other option but to make his move. Remember they were placing bets so if the gun failed to fire on the 3rd try the enemy would’ve had to reload the gun a spin the chamber again and whos to say the enemy would’ve place 3 rounds back in the chamber. That’s why the enemy handed the gun to DeNiro after the gun didn’t fire on the 2nd try because it still was a 50/50 chance with one empty chamber left. Nobody knew If the chamber was empty or loaded ...that’s how the game works. The worst case scenario is Deniro would have to pull the trigger twice in the event that the first chamber has empty which in all likelihood wouldn’t have worked since they surrounded by machine guns and they both would’ve been quickly killed. Think about it... if you were in the situation would you place the gun to your head and pull the trigger again knowing it’s a 50/50 chance the chamber may or may not be empty or take your chances a pray the chamber was loaded and make your move?? Deniro had only one chance and he needed the 3 rounds to pull it off. The scene made perfect sense. He had nothing to lose. Either try or die anyway.

    I also thought that maybe the weight of the gun gives them an idea. They definitely watched it, and made sure they loaded it with 3 bullets bunched together. It would have been loaded with one bullet every other chamber as it's not sporting or exciting. Or with 2 together and one odd one. They were wondering together if the next one was the final empty chamber...because if it wasn't, then that's giving a loaded gun to a prisoner. That moment, was the only and best moment they were ever going to get.

    5 shot gun. I think the director and everybody in the scene would have noticed if it was a six shot.

    If it held 6 bullets, the next trigger pull could have been empty. 3 bullets 2 false pulls is 5 holes, was this a 6 shooter?

    Is it not hard to buy that DeNiro would let himself and Walken test the gun at those odds? When he could have done what he did at the start?

    Well, no, because he needed more bullets to subdue to of the captors while Walken grabbed the gun from the fourth. If he only shot the main captor the other behind him would shoot both of them immediately.

    In all the Vietnam documentaries that I have viewed, which include hundreds of hours of videotape footage, interviews of the soldiers who fought in the field ranging from The battle of the Ia Drang Valley to The Battle of Dak Tow, including POW survivors, not one of the veterans has ever alluded to or mentioned anything akin to this type of torture being perpetuated on American soldiers or any other allied countries of the United States. IT would appear that this is total fabrication by the Author and or director.

    Would’ve never known about this movie/scene if it wasn’t for Patrice. As boring as the movie is ACTUALLY. There are at least 2 scenes that make up for the rest of the 1hr and 30mins. (2hrs and 30mins.)
