Here's a little history of Thameslink on the Tube Map, and everything you need to know about the new version too.

Important note re fares: Between West Hampstead or Finsbury Park and Elephant & Castle or London Bridge the fares are the same as tube fares. But, if you travel further on Thameslink then the National Rail fares apply which are generally more expensive. If you also change to a tube line and travel off the Thameslink route in zone 1 then the mixed mode premium will also apply.

If you convert the RGB values for the colours to HSV, then colour used for Thameslink in the Tube Map is the same hue as the logo colour (333). H&C is slightly more towards red (357)

That link at Farringdon is Brilliant. I have been to many Brighton womens wsl games down in Crawley on thameslink and used to change back onto the tube by walking the west hampstead link, which was a flaming nightmare in comparison to the 10 second link at Farringdon. It is a brilliant little secret that is now no longer so secret thanks to this new map.

It's been years since I visited London, and back then it surprised me when I realized that there were "tube" trains that weren't on the Tube map. Getting from point A to point B had more options than I knew, in part because they were not all on a single map. I woke up to the fact that transport in London was not a single system but actually a bunch of systems that overlapped - and sometimes competed. While I have continued to marvel at London's wonderful public transportation and how the systems interact and cooperate, I also think that it would be more efficient to be owned and operated by a single agent. Keeping it all working together must be like trying to organize a boxful of kittens....

Coming by Eurostar to London from Brussels Thameslink is always handy to get to parts of South London. As my partner suffers from a little claustrophobia I like to use it as after crossing the Thames it largely is overground. Pleased to see it back as I have always used the Rail Network map in the past.

I remember when the Capital Card was introduced so that railway services came into the zones. It was the predecessor to the current travelcard and oyster. (Before it was the LT travelcard but it added the rail services in.) IIRC The map was the railway suburban services on one side with a central box which was expanded larger on the reverse showing the tube lines.

I'm not surprised. Since the first lockdown, I have spotted from my window that Thameslink is running more and more frequent. In March it was every 20-30 minutes, now its every 10-15 minutes. Along les frequent South-Eastern, I may say trains through Streatham Station are passing every 2-5 minutes.

TL on the tube map? Tick. But they've possibly overdone it for their trial. My guess is that they'll declare the map too cluttered and remove TL in 2022. Which is a shame. Like you, I was surprised to see the whole thing, rather than just the core. It does, after all, seem ridiculous to include Dartford on TL at 2tph when the other 8tph SouthEastern trains are missed off.

does seem really weird esp. in the SE. A vistor (once they can return) would look at this and go "So the only way to get to Lewisham is the DLR? Or to go to Dartford I need to get the DLR to Greenwich then wait for the Thameslink?" its actually mis-information to leave out the ret of main rail services at this point

If you put a line on the tube map, people will naturally assume it charges tube fares for oyster and contactless journeys. Some people might decide, for instance, to use Thameslink to go from St Pancras to London Bridge because it's on the tube map and it looks like an equally good route, without realising that Thameslink is going to fleece them with their pirate fares.

If we're going to have two trains-per-hour Thameslink tentacles on the Tube map, we should just use the Rail and Tube Map and ditch the Tube map. Even if it was just the Thameslink core on the map, the absence of c2c and other non-TfL lines with similar credentials for inclusion makes it look like marketing rather than mapping.

  • @fetchstixRHD

Hmm, I'd say the reason Thameslink should have been there to begin with was as it passes through central London and provides a useful way to travel across central London. Other than that [and the Moorgate services imo], if you added more than that then there wouldn't be any point of the Tube map by itself as per @@sihollett's comment.

  • @sihollett

    @sihollett

    3 жыл бұрын

@@fetchstixRHD Thameslink is there as it links stations already on the map at a high frequency and with step-free access. c2c (and other lines) does exactly the same thing. If you can stretch the tube map to cover Thameslink's core without it being redundant due to the Rail and Tube map doing the same thing more comprehensively, then you can add similar lines like c2c. The big issue is the addition of 2tph tentacles (often alongside more frequent NR lines) - they render the map just a poor imitation of the Rail and Tube Map.

@@sihollett: Eh, I would argue that the crucial point is that TL crosses central London, and without that you wouldn't have Thameslink on the Tube Map. It provides a useful way to cross central London while relieving busy parts of the Underground (most notably the Northern Line - weren't the Bank works supposed to be coming soon too?), whereas it's harder to make a similar case for c2c seeing it skips a lot of the intermediate stops and these are further out (assumedly where crowding isn't as much of an issue on the District etc, and arguably they should be carrying more of the passenger share than c2c). Considering that the outer stretches of the Anglia Overground services (to Enfield Town/Cheshunt) and the Metropolitan line (to Chesham/Amersham) are 2tph as well (and that pretty much all the inner Thameslink routes which weren't 4tph are boosted by other services - at least until this year hit anyway!) I don't think that their inclusion creates a contradiction. In my personal opinion anything more than Thameslink (and maybe the Moorgate GN trains, but even that's a bit of a stretch) risks needing to include all rail services, but you're free to disagree 🙂

@@fetchstixRHD That Thameslink crosses central London wasn't used in any of the justification for its inclusion (nor other line's exclusion) on the Tube Map. The Northern line alternative - sure, that was an argument for it. But neither justify the tentacles. c2c's main benefit is that it skips a lot of the intermediate stops - it's why the service is so busy these days! It's not as if it should be on the TfL map, or that its absence is leading to people not finding it (arguably too many people know about it!), but that the reasons for including it are pretty much the same as the reasons why Thameslink's core has appeared on the map - high-frequency, step-free, alternative to a route already on the map. The 2tph bits of TfL services absolutely belong on the map of TfL services (called 'Tube map' for marketing reasons) - they are also just a handful of stations that are part of a wider network. The previous map had the following 2tph off-peak stations (ignoring services not shown): Chesham, Amersham, Reading, Twyford, Maidenhead, Taplow, Burnham, Slough, Langley, Iver, West Drayton, Acton Main Line, Enfield Town, Bush Hill Park, Cheshunt, Theobalds Grove, Turkey Street, Southbury and Emerson Park - 19 stations. The Thameslink tentacles add Mitcham Eastfields, Hackbridge, Carshalton, Sutton, West Sutton, Sutton Common, St Helier, Morden South, South Merton, Wimbledon Chase, Haydons Road, Tooting (13 on the Wimbledon/Sutton loop alone), Purley, Coulsdon South, Petts Wood, Orpington, St Mary Cray, Swanley, Deptford, Maze Hill, Charlton, Plumstead, Abbey Wood, Slade Green and Dartford (11 'Kent Thameslink') - 26 in total, plus South Croydon is peak-only and New Southgate, Oakleigh Park, New Barnet haven't even seen their peak-only service start. 30 low-frequency stations is still a tiny fraction of the map, but well over half of the stations added by including the Thameslink brand (49 total) to the TfL map. And if we include stations that are on the TfL map already as they are served by TfL services, there's 31 (Norwood Junction added) low-to-no-frequency stations out of 65 Thameslink stations on the map - a little better, but still 48%. The other services that boost Thameslink tentacles aren't shown on the map for just as arbitrary a reason as the tentacles are on it (marketing a brand). Other than the Sevenoaks-Blackfriars service, of course (which, while provided by Thameslink, doesn't go through the core - the peak-only extensions to Welwyn GC not occuring yet) boosting the Catford loop service.

I really hope we finally start getting some of the promised Thameslink services which are yet to materialise. The 2tph service from Maidstone East to Cambridge via London Bridge and St Pancras being the most notable example.

Pantone is the color reference of choice. (not RBG) - most offset printing is (CMYK) - I think a concierge service is in order, I have a headache thinking about all the train / tube options in London. Amazing.

Nice one! I’ve used Thameslink since 2008! Also handy for Luton and Gatwick Airports, Farringdon will connect with Crossrail, West Hampstead is handy for Jubilee to Canary Wharf. St Pancras for HS1, City Thameslink for The City. And London Bridge for its connections and the Shard. Love St Pancras and it’s handy for Kings Cross and Euston

Probably an unpopular opinion, however I believe that Thameslink doesn't belong on the tube map as it's a non-TfL Rail service. Using the same logic that applied to Thameslink, you might as well add all the other mainline rail operators such as SWR between Waterloo & Clapham Junction/Wimbledon as they provide useful links between mainline stations, which would basically copy the London's Rail & Tube Services Map.

Actually, the pay as you go fares on Thameslink are not the same as on the Tube. It is slightly more expensive to take the former than the latter across the same zones and it's significantly more expensive to combine them in one journey than use only one of them. So it doesn't function as "just another tube line" in terms of fares.
