Race The Tube - Can You Walk Faster Than The Central Line?
We're back out onto the Tube to try out a couple of connections where we think it's possible to walk faster than the Central line!
First up, is the classic Queensway to Bayswater dodge, but after that did you know that Lancaster Gate to Paddington are exceedingly close, and can be easily walked? It's even an official TfL Out of Station Interchange as well, meaning you can break your journey between these two stations but still pay just the one fare.
Hit subscribe if you like this, and look at the other videos in the 'Race The Tube' playlists where we've done more!

I love this series. When the CrossLizPurpLine Train eventually opens there will have to be a race between the Central Line and Elizabeth Line from Ealing Broadway to Stratford and a race between the District Line and Elizabeth Line from Ealing Broadway to Whitechapel. Those would be good races.

You’re lucky you found a Central Line train Geoff; they’re in short supply at the moment. “Lack of trains” minor delays this morning. Must’ve lost one under the sofa this morning.

I wish you had more recognition, Geoff. I was in London for the first time last year. I absolutely loved it, and train system absolutely amazed me. Your videos make me so happy, the very best kind of nostalgia ♥️ keep going! 👏🏽
New Geoff Vid - yay. This'll be es-central 😉 viewing. 🚉
What a coincidence, we spent Christmas in London and had a hotel just in between Queensway and Bayswater. This brings back good memories. We love your series.
Love your videos! Always a treat to watch. You both are proof that you don’t need a ton of money to have a good time, or a sweet little adventure!
For years now, unless it's been absolutely hammering with rain, I've walked between Paddington and Lancaster Gate if I need to get to the Central line so it's good to know that it really is quicker. Thank you for that!
I do love they "cut and cover" lines. Bigger loading gauge and really interesting stations. I would often go a less direct route just to ride on the Met and District. Back in the 60s, if you were riding the last train, you might even see a steam hauled works train. Result! Ta G&V.

I really dislike the lines because they're always delayed due to old signals (usually Edgware Road which dates back to 1926!) and they go so much slower than other lines.
@ashleyw1393

ElvenSpellmaker i don’t think the issue is old signals that causes delays. More so that the top part of the circle has other lines that intersect at Edgware Road and Baker Street that have flat junctions.

Watching that reminded me how much I miss the tube right now, including rush hour. Never thought I'd say that! Great video again Geoff.
These have become some of my favorite videos! Keep it up.
👍👍👍Loved this vid, superb! It's made me get withdrawal symptoms for London and especially the tube. I need to come down and get a fix. I need to make a list of all the shortcuts on foot so I can save myself a bit of time and money.
This was actually really useful for me as all the tubes into paddington on 23rd of Feb where either part or wholely suspended. The walk from Lancaster gate to Paddington was a surprisingly short.
Following along in my A-Z London map book. Great video!
These videos always make me smile. If you're on the Piccadilly line and with someone you want to get rid of, abandon them on the line and say you'll meet up with them later at Brompton Road station. Magically, you'll never see them again.
You two are a brilliant Double Act. Lovely.
I did not understand why you do this. I just want to say thank you for sharing. It is a nice way to know a bit more about the transport network in the UK.

When I was in London last Saturday, having come back on the Central line from Stratford, I just decided to walk from Lancaster Gate to Paddington, though that was instead of changing at Oxford Circus and getting the Bakerloo line back to Paddington. I can't wait for the Bakerloo line edition of this, as the Bakerloo line south of Paddington is high up on my list of favourite Underground routes
@koipen

Also the most redundant - you could really cut out the entirety of Bakerloo south of Paddington without any major loss of connectivity - here's hoping for the Lewisham extension...
Loved the Lancaster Gate test! I do something similar when going into work as a GWR traveler. When coming from or going toward Bank, it always seems much faster to walk than take the Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus then change to the Central Line to Bank, or in reverse.
I’m hoping this is all building up to you attempting the original Race the Tube at some point
It was cool to see Viki walk by Sussex Garden. The last time I was in London, over 20 years ago, my B&B was on that street.

Great video. Will try it July August when we are over in London.

When my family visited London in 2019, we stayed in a hotel right between Paddington and Lancaster Gate. This gave us plenty of options for getting around. If we needed to get to, say, Tottenham Court Road, we would walk to Lancaster Gate station and get the Central line train. On the other hand, if we needed to get to King's Cross, we would walk to Paddington and get the Circle or City & Hammersmith line train.
That’s my only trick on the underground in the open ! In the 80s when at Uni down at Mile End Road always took the circle line, until I found out that Notting Hill Gate was so close to Paddington. Nice to see it proved 35 years later !
This is the content I strive to see.
Basically Top Gear for Tube nerds! Love it!
:D i like your videos and i am not from London, or even from UK :D and first week of February i was visiting it and lived street next to London St. and Paddington station and i used tube like you with those changes few times and each time had to wait many minutes at Nothing Hill :D
Interesting thanks to both of you.

Best commuting tip I ever had when I worked near Oxford Circus and took the train into PAD... they'd closed the Bakerloo for escalator refurb and a friend told me "just walk to Lancaster Gate"... loved that little walk. Even after they re-opened the PAD Bakerloo I still used Lanc Gate for the fresh air. :-)

FWIW if I had 5 minutes from Lanc Gate exit I could make a train walking really fast. I used zebra crossings and only one traffic light across Praed St on the west end of the station. Over'n'out from geeky ex-commuter.
Brilliant. Oh i seen that tom scott video. its very good. His comedy is also good. Citation Needed is especially funny.
The last time I was in London (2001) I stayed at the Thistle Hyde Park for a conference at the Hilton London Metropole. It was much faster to walk than take the underground! And more fun too! I did take the bus from South Kensington to Queensway at night to avoid walking across the park.
Loved this thanks both
i love you two so much
When I lived in London, I worked in the hotel on top of Queensway station, and lived on the next road, just down from Bayswater.
You could do a three-way race- land bus (no. 27), water bus (London Waterbus Company) and Underground (Circle/Dist/H&C and then Northern) between Paddington (Little Venice) and Camden Lock.
Can u bike faster than the Victoria line. Between green park to Warren Street
Vauxhall to Oval would be a competitive 'beat the Victoria line' challenge.
Hi Geoff - at the start of this, on the platform of Bond Street, there's a door behind you on the opposite side of the tunnel from the platform, the floor of which is couple of inches above the height of the rails and below platform level. What on Earth is that doing there?! I seem to remember they only crop up at a few platforms on the westbound branch of the Central Line between Bond Street and perhaps Holland Park? I've puzzled over them before, but no one seems to see them or know what they're for. Any ideas?
@proper_charlie
4 жыл бұрын
@@OneKnifeYeHand Quite probably. Given the stations I think these doors appear at were all part of the original stretch of the Central Line, I would guess they were built for some purpose, possibly now forgotten and now are left empty, because, let's face it, getting to that door is going to contravene several health and safety policies. I was looking at the TfL station diagrams to see if they were marked on them. They're not and nor do they seem to obviously connect to any other part of the station. I'm not even certain they're all on the westbound platforms at those stations, but I am sure the doors of mystery appear at more than one station on that stretch of the Central Line.

I found the City Mapper is so clever. My hotel was near Bayswater some time ago. Whenever the apps suggest me to take Central Line, it asked me to walk to Queensway!! Next thing: I ordered your books from Amazon!!! I will get them in April. Can I have your signatures when I am in London?. haha..
Green Park to Charing Cross? That used to be Jubilee Line. You'd have to stack things against the Tube to make it a contest though, such as starting nr Piccadily Ritz, and getting Geoff "lost" exiting at the Northern Line entrance.
Had time to pop into the Sawyers Arms in London Street. Always use that watering hole before heading back home to somerset.
The Lancaster Gate - Paddington shortcut is a useful one to know if you're going from somewhere like Marble Arch or east of there.
Should've done one where while both starting on an eastbound train at Holland Park, one switches at Notting Hill Gate to Bayswater and the other stays on the central line until Queensway and walks. But good vid anyway

Also the SSL low frequency had great potential to be the key factor in how much of a loss it was - doing the routes the other way around would have made it less "oh, I have to wait 6 minutes" (even if it was actually 1), and more "can you walk faster than the Central line" than the "can you walk faster than make the change".
Queensway/Bayswater/Notting Hill Gate was the nearest stations from my hotel when I was in London last November
I slipped on the road near the Pret-a-Manger at 2:55! That was during my trip to London, it was on my last day there... My sister's Oyster card was faulty then...
Great vid Geoff when are u going to do the least used station in east Yorkshire
I took the tube from Bond Street to Lancaster Gate then walked to Paddington yesterday when I was on my way back from Vidcon, would have been useful to know going to as half the tube lines were closed!
To commemorate the day the LizPurpCross trains finally start full business: How about Didcot to the City? Classic commuter conundrum! Didcot-Paddington-x-Lancaster Gate-Bank Didcot-Reading-Liverpool Street-x-Bank

Snaresbrook to Wansted isn't a bad idea. One walks and the other goes via Leytonstone plus Hainault trains are more common than Epping branch trains.
Wicked man your at my neck of the woods wish I saw you guys

I thought of a Northern and Victoria Line one, can you beat it from Oval to Vauxhall? Might have to run though
@Jack-dt9nu
2 жыл бұрын
or Clapham North to Brixton (also a run though)
You could do Hammersmith to Kings Cross, Circle/H&C vs Piccadilly
For the Northern, Camden Town to Mornington Crescent starting from whichever branch does not stop at Mornington Crescent (so you have to change trains at Camden Town).
I'd suggest Ealing Broadway-Hanger Lane and Roding Valley-Buckhurst Hill. Both of those could plausibly take longer on the Central Line than on foot.
Edgware Rd Bakerloo line to Baker st. Another good one..
Season finale for this series: Can you swim the channel faster than the Eurostar?
Everyone you said "Bayswater" I thought you were about to say "Basingstoke"! You certainly don't want to get those two mixed up! :)
For the Jubilee line, I'd suggest Swiss Cottage to/from Finchley Road
Can you do a Bakerloo/Central for Paddington too? I always chose the walk from Lancaster Gate (turning right out of Lancaster Gate) as I was generally guaranteed a seat all the way home/work at the time.
Any chance of doing a behind the scenes video of the Northern Line extension? You have the contacts in high places to do such a thing.
For the Victoria, Warren Street to Euston?
@zork999
4 жыл бұрын
If you are coming in on a Circle, etc train to Euston Square then comparing Euston to Warren Street would be a fair comparison. IIRC there is supposed to be a direct connection between Euston Sq and Euston soon without having to get out and walk aboveground. If they are starting from a Victoria Line train then the person that stays on will win easily. Probably the same if they start on a Northern Line train since the interchange at Euston is an easy one IIRC.
This was a year ago but it feels like so much more. I planned on going to London im May and unsurprisingly it didn't work.
Excellent
One I've tried recently. Travel west bound on the central. Is it quicker to get off at oxford circus and onto the Bakerloo to Paddington. Or stay on central to Lancaster gate and walk to Paddington. Inside the station.
I think there's also one between Holland Park and Notting Hill Gate. I've walked it often and been quicker than buses, so given the lift time at Holland Park and then the time getting back to surface at Notting Hill, I'm sure its just quicker to walk. Although this is only useful information if you're changing off the Circle/District and only going west one stop. But there we go
Hi Geoff have you done all the stations at Warrington west yet
From Bond Street to Stratford on the Jubilee line is definitely faster than the Central Line

Bond St. to Stratford is quicker on Jubilee Line. I've tested it out before on my way home. I went Central Line to Stratford then on a jubilee home.
The answer is obviously yes! This is fun
For the Jubilee line - the mainline concourse at Waterloo to the statue of Boudicca at the west end of Westminster Bridge.
Love to see the video very much. Especially I really feel the same when Geoff said, "Don't change at Notting Hill Gate to Baywater, GET OUT at Queensway" lol. By the way, what is the name of the music in the video using at 9:09 please? Thank you so much👍
A quest? West Ruislip to Epping, not necessarily all on the Central Line, yet using tracks. Against any other method? I'll get the winner a pint!
It was a long time ago that I went from the Circle to the Central line at Notting Hill Gate but IIRC it was quite a long walk between platforms. Is that the actual case or is my memory playing tricks?
Geoff, I commute every day and I feel confident I can walk faster than public transport. Not least because it’s usually cancelled. 😄
@Geoff Marshall - I think for the Victoria line, try between Walthamstow Central and Blackhorse Road
