The Death Of Fashion Magazines (RANT)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Magazines are dead. Legacy fashion publishers can hem and haw over the value of glossy print titles in media nerd podcasts, but magazines are dead - or at least they are on their way out the door and with them the lucrative print advertising deals upon which many titles still heavily depend.
This does not mean that media is dead. Quite the opposite. People are consuming more media than ever before. An August study by Nielsen found that American adults spend more than 11 hours a day with media, up from 9 hours 32 minutes four years ago. In fact, media is having a renaissance.

Sadly, Vogue is like a catalogue now. Even the photoshoots are uninspired and a little bit too perfect... like a Macdonald's ad, it's souless.

I am used to reading Vogue UK. When I recieved an American Vogue for the first time( which was a few months ago) I tought it was a free catalogue that came with the magazine as a "gift". It took me a moment to realise that it was the actual magazine. It's sooo boring that it made me question if Anna Wintour still is the highly respected person she had always been. It geniunely looked like no effort was put in it.

I’m shocked and surprised at how expensive fashion magazines have become for next to nothing of quality. I used to read GQ and Esquire magazines and the quality has gone down due to over advertising. I can remember a time when magazines had very good articles and fashion spreads. Is it this way for the British (including France, Italy, etc.) counterparts of these magazines?

A lot of magazines started to “die” when they started to focus on being more like the ~influencers~ from the 2010s, more on what sells to the masses than what is creative. I’m a massive fan of print fashion magazines, been reading them since I was around 5/6, and that’s why it is so hard to admit a lot of them became boring to me around 2018. I honestly miss Franca Sozzani’s Vogue Italia, it talked about meaningful subjects using fashion and photography. Elle Brazil used to do something similar when they were still printing. They came back on digital this year and have been creating fashion/lifestyle content I actually enjoy reading. But, honestly, fashion has become quite boring in the past three years, and I completely understand if some editors sound loveless. Is quite difficult to find good interesting fashion, find and/or create good fashion content when you don’t have a lot of time to do so.

i want to see genuine critique of fashion. i want to see the more information about designers and why they do things the way they do, their references, their creative process and etc. idk if I'm making sense i feel it's worse in my country (South Africa) where we have great designers doing great things but absolutely nothing on them. we see their clothes but not their story. fashion journalism seems non existent here. i google "south african fashion journalists" and the second search that came up was about the non-existence of fashion journalism in south africa. 🤔

Phsycial mags will be dead for the majority, but for the minority that has experience with them, they will never substitute that feeling with anything else. Those are usually the people who care about in depth writings about collections as well. The community will get smaller, but closer.

I prefer reading a physical magazine. Vogue is incredibly stale to me. Anna Wintour needs to step down. My favorite fashion magazine is Allure. I have been very impressed with Michelle Lee as editor-in-chief. For a long time Allure under Linda Wells was quite frankly, boring. Now with Lee, I learn a lot. And it IS inclusive. It’s not just a buzzword. I find myself circling ideas, or cutting out pages. That’s how I gauge the success of a magazine. Another magazine I subscribe to is called Better Homes & Garden. I don’t think this magazine is in the UK. I like it because it focuses on interior design, and other things related to the home. I always ask myself: what can I learn from this issue? That’s how it should be for all the magazines. What’s happening is celebrity culture has made fashion journalism incredibly lazy. Unfortunately, U.S universities have siloed journalism. So the curriculum lacks depth. From what I’ve read history , philosophy, sciences, and art history are not part of the core for a journalism degree. That seems ridiculous to me. At one point I contemplated getting a Masters in Journalism, but I realized it was too narrow. I think that’s why fashion articles seem so juvenile.

This is a very interesting take and I never saw it from this angle so big thanks to you. For me, the issue is that I read so many magazines and a lot of them have the same damn campaigns across the board to the point it gets annoying. When I want to see good editorials there are specific magazines that market themselves as more of a photography mag (W-Magazine is somewhat in this boat).

  • @FatherEbenezer

The magazines should only go physical when it actually adds to the content and gives it context. Such as Loewe box and making it more of an event. When it's used right and word of mouth would do its job. Stop being a slave to such a rigid release schedule and spend the money on interesting physical experiences that are less frequent.

I mean, I started watching fashion channels like Clever and Chic because, unlike the magazines, it actually EXPLAINED the history of fashion in a way I could understand. I didn't even get that much from magazines, who expected you to know the brands were important because they were on print. Print is just a lot of gorgeous photos with puff and ads attached.

I want print magazines to actually do their job as a publication and give me something to enjoy reading not looking at. If I wanted to view images I would go to a curated blog of photography or visit a gallery, I want to check out a fashion magazine and see dicey articles and critical reviews of shows. It also does a disservice to the designers who think they can just continue getting away with shitty designs year after year, we see you wasting recourses!! BIG mistake.. look at how Alexander Mcqueen was covered when he was on the rise, he was picked apart for anything he did. I want that attention to detail back in journalism. I think its aspirational at this point though. Current fashion journalism will have to die in order to make way for the next generation, thats life! An end is just a new begining

We in Canada had Fashion file and fashion TV and we were really lucky to have Tim Blanks hosts the runway show. Tim would blew our minds with comments like on Issye Miyake show " one wonder if the designer heart and soul is really in the one of a kind garments at the end of the show." Tim got a lot of leeway because he was working for Canadian broadcaster which have very high standard in journalist and reporting. Most print fashion magazine like American Vogue and Elle are written not by journalist but copy writer. They write to the service of magazine editor. If a brand spend $$$ million a year on magazine ad, they would get write up of the designer and the lifestyle of the brand to further influence the reading public. No wonder the print media is trouble. There are very few journalist in the print fashion business that write with a critical eyes. And there only one left. an English journalist name Suzy Menkes. cheers

I used to love reading every article and learning new things, diving into the deep depth's of fabric's, shape, history, etc, now you get nothing, it's like a flick book, disposable trash not worth a second glance after you've scanned through it once. This is the same for every interest I used to enjoy reading magazines about, from music production to cycling and fashion, it's so sad, but I also realise I am part of the problem because I stopped reading them years ago, but now I miss them massively, I would pay monthly for a good quality, well written magazine in 2021, but there are none!!

I'd like to think it's a psychological thing, the appeal of physical/tangible publications. At best, electronic media can only engage up to 2 senses of sight and hearing in just about anybody. Physical materials can target those and even the senses of touch and smell ('cause bookworms love that, me included). Off the bat, the hard copy versions of magazines already have an advantage because of the variety of stimulation it can give off to a reader/consumer. And IDK, I feel like physical publications as an experience (pretty much compared to travels, concerts, and [let's not get far] fashion shows) seems to be becoming like a thing amidst so much electronic and digital content creation and exposure. While it's probably taken for granted by the general masses for the longest time, I feel like it's getting a new and interesting level of traction that might cause the physical magazine to stay afloat in overall relevance. Who knows, maybe a physical magazine might just be THE luxury among others.

You were generous including physical sales in revenue for media companies. Physical copies have a unique charm. I was thrilled when I bought my first Vogue issue. The feeling of holding something you like in your hands and knowing that it is yours to keep is unparalleled. Good video essay. I mostly watch Vogue for their Vogue Voices section. In the same vein, I'm sad to see the demise of independent fashion blogging. Pity they've been mostly replaced by Insta Influencer craze. Social medias deserves a good share of the blame in this regard. I reckon Givhan did an article on this too, how journlists are flocking to Twitter in a desperate attempt to give us some half baked review/impression first.

If big publications want to break news that’s not earth-shattering online or at least do photojournalism first online, I’d be OK with it if they were doing the deeper, more intelligent reporting in print. (I will speak mostly about Vogue since your video is more about it than other fashion magazines) One of the thing that enrages me is that it is 2020 and people still don’t count model’s Harper’s Bazaar,Elle and W magazines achievements like how they do with Vogue. These 3 are as much and more better than Vogue, it’s just that Vogue has had a long time of shine in the exact same time as the shine of the high fashion industry like from Coco Chanel time already who was one of the first high fashion stylists and continued until the 80s when in my opinion was their worst era ever since half of their covers were a beautiful woman’s face and that’s all, maybe sometimes a hat,a bit of makeup and a bit of expression; I would definitely say that they were terrible back then but actually they had all these new wave of Italian brands and the inside of their covers seem to be so much more interesting and pleasing than nowadays. Also,it was Cosmopolitan’s era because they too loved putting modes with ‘sex-appeal’ a lot but they didn’t put only the face but at least half of their bodies and they used to wear some revealing high fashion clothes or high fashion swimwear. So at least Cosmopolitan was better at creativity. Then they came to the shine in the 90s again with slightly different and better cover and high fashion stylists/brands and runway models only growing their status even higher along with fashion movies too and continued to grow until 2015s then it all kinda started to go downhill and now they are way too focused on the popularity of the celebrity ,like so many singers,actors,Instagram/tiktokers/KZread famous people who aren’t even into fashion a little bit or slightly not to talk about the September Hope Issue with the girl in white, obviously it’s good that they wanted to spread awareness but it’s Vogue and the dress was bad,not talking about how the photo (not saying photoshoot) was probably made in 20 minutes as maximum. It just made me feel uninterested, I obsessed read about the girl and she is doing amazing but the cover was so random that I wouldn’t have even felt inspired to look at the headlines.(Sorry for the little girl, not hating on her). They are getting too used on these people,it’s not bad using them once in a while but it’s too much. Also the fact that some of major modern day supermodels aren’t conquering the Big 4 magazine and it seem suspicious,I read on @HFconfession’s comments that some models like Bella Hadid,Cara Taylor,Yasmin Winjadblum and similar (I may have gotten 1 or 2 models wrong but you probably understand what category of models I am talking about) still don’t have 1 big 4 and someone said that it sounds like they are ,in their opinion’s , doing it on purpose. Not to talk about the big amount of advertisements they have thinking that we wouldn’t notice. And what about Teen Vogue? I literally unfollowed their Instagram page because they are too much about ‘teen exposure, finding themselves’ in a sexual way. I mean that I appreciated the period talks and I didn’t mind the first time warnings and similar but they started to get so much Adult-like as if they expect every single teen all around the world to have frequent s*x experiences at 14+, literally there were things like ‘how to talk about your s*x desires with your partner’ and it felt so out of place for me. (I am 16 by the way) Also they should put half of their singers they put on normal Vogue on Teen Vogue more often, not only everyone wants the classic Vogue to be about High Fashion and fashionable celebrities but also it would give them the success on Teen Vogue back, I remember loving picking magazines with my favourite actresses and other interesting articles on teen magazines until I was 10. At least they would have more space for actual models and creativity on the original Vogue too. Seriously, I don’t care about a model Vogue’s covers anymore unless they are mostly different from each other’s and good , I have been trying to concentrate a lot more on Elle,W magazine and Harper Bazaar but they still don’t get as respected as Vogue so I don’t really know my favourite models’ collection of those and I believe it’s a shame. Anyway you said what you said, I seriously could never spend 10€ for Vogue when they can’t even choose photo for their cover when there were some even better in the complete photoshoot released, not even talking about wanting to read it worldwide.

Well I definetly agree with your statement, even if it hurts my soul to admit it. I've been a huge fan of print magazines since I was like 4 or 5, but latetly there is nothing really appealing about them anymore, I feel like I only come across adds when flicking through their pages, they have no actual content what so ever. Thats why I think that smaller-independent publications are leading the way, they actualy share knowledge and interesting reflexions. This is the aproach that all magazines should take, creating valuable content is key. Also I think it is great how creators as yourself are starting to build patreons and magazines as an alternative way to learn about fashion. And as someone who is hoping to deep their feet into the industry when I finish my studies I find this discusions very helpfull. So actualy, thank you!!! Pd: I'm super excited for your magazine!

I truly hope your magazine does well, it's been a while since I've read an article or review on fashion that is constructive. Honestly, I think print magazines have become more of an aesthetic rather than an informative body of work, which is why I agree with you when you say that the passion is no longer there. Elite magazines such as Vogue are using their elite status as a crutch to compete with digital media, the only reason they're staying relevant is by producing content that is mediocre and easily consumed by mass media. My question is how can fashion journalist set themselves apart and compete with these magazines to essentially reach an audience as large as Vogue without creating a niche market?

I can absolutely confirm. There used to be a lot of value in fashion magazine, now it just appeals to the lowest common denominator. IMHO, people just stopped buying physical editions and their digital counterparts are lower quality, lower effort and more prone to clickbait. Anyways, great video man.

I’m late to this party, but the points in the video still hold true 3 years later. I think a lot of people who are interested in fashion in the more studied way that Roadman (sry, I don’t think I’ve heard your name yet) describes-i.e., more serious and in-depth, not superficial or celebrity-obsessed-are not only quite numerous, but also starved by the big magazines for the discussions and criticisms they crave. That’s why they’re happy to pay for subscriptions to media that will deliver what they seek. (This is the trend in _most_ media industries right now, not just fashion media.) Also, personally, I think the difference between digital and print media is in the type of product it delivers. Print media, being a tangible object of material culture, is better equipped to carry “art” because people tend to regard art at tangible. Print media can leverage this widely held assumption by presenting artistic fashion photography, creative layouts/fold-outs, even playing with the texture of the paper. The print magazine becomes an piece of art while also containing art. While digital media _can_ present artistic images (art and music videos are a good example), it tends to be better suited for delivering articles because words and ideas are already intangible (just like the digital medium), and the function of digital media relies far less on its form than print media does. Plus, the immediacy of digital media allows writers and readers to keep incredibly up-to-date, as well as interact with each other. Despite the above, I should make clear that I don’t want to limit either print or digital media to offering only certain types of art/articles. But there’s a saying about literary genres that I think gets across the point: “It’s not that a particular genre is incapable of doing something that other genres do; it’s just that some genres are better equipped to take aim at particular targets.” (Think about the difference in romantic poetry and romance novels... XD) These are just some of my thoughts from listening to (most of) the video. Cheers!

I really agree with a lot of the points you're making! Another thing I think most mainstream magazines are doing - even Vogue, is creating a domestic environment (Vogue India for example) that focusses mostly on celebrity and influencers. I feel that's definitely impacted sales because it seems to be equating fashion designers and fashion models to influencers. Further, I also think that considering that print as a medium itself is dying, people are now also moving towards more cohesive magazines or books on fashion (Virgil and Samuel's books selling out) and are investing into a yearly book or a yearly/half yearly magazine vs a magazine that has a new issue every month and doesn't really do much as most of that information is already easily available on the internet and hence, the attention span for the monthly kind of content seems to be gone completely.

I dont think that there is necessarily no future for print magazines, like of course I agree that they are less in demand than they were before as people can access the same things and information online risk free and at no cost, and can return to it and view it at a much faster rapid rate. Due to the algorithms of social media, and the ease of accessibility of social media, it means that we are less used to seeing things that are actually 'new' or 'different' to what we are very much likely from our history to like. (I feel like this actually puts is in quite a dangerous space, where we are trapped in a bubble of our constructed digital media consumption. Which is sad) Anyway that aside, it means that I think if we are to consume a print magazine, it would have to be much more niche to our interests have some kind of purpose, because simply reporting 'fashion', collections or upcoming trends is now irrelevant news when we can watch these shows ourselves, see images immediately after. They need to provide us something new, or give us that sense of belonging that people are in search for, so I think integrating into particular subcultures may be the best way to keep them thriving. Furthermore, there are actually LOADS of digi/ print independent magazines, that thrive off of the work if upcoming creatives. Magazines such as Vogue, Elle, etc primarily have in house photographers, stylists or work with famous / established ones through the top agencies in the industry. But there are thousands of people who create and shoot editorials, this kind of creativity is not dying any time soon. Therefore those who work in this sector are actually the heart and soul and fuel to such publications. This sort of community is self sufficient, but again is also it's own bubble. And I also have a few problems with how this means that those who work for free on editorials are basically paying for the magazines to survive. Anyways thank you to anyone who actually reads this it was kind of just a thought dump and I probably should have clarified my thoughts before I started typing hahahha!

You are so right about reviews - I've actually stopped reading them because I was sick of them simply being descriptions of the show. I want to know what the writer thinks about them, and I want some criticism when it's due. Bored of all the pandering because of advertising dollars or whatever. Bring back some critical thinking and some constructive criticism. I live for a less than favourable Cathy Horyn review!

Yes I really do agree with your opinion about print magazines it's really disappointing of how everything nowadays is shifted to a digital platform. I think the reason why the journalism industry is dying is because of the growing fast trends made by youtubers, influencers on instagram and tiktok. And for Gen Z it is easier to catch on through social media than finding things out in print. With access to a phone it's like we don't have to go out and buy a magazine to view content. For improving the printing industry in fashion content writers have to find more diverse and authentic content that is not on social media yet in order to get the message out to Gen Z.

Well, I'm an intern digital editor turned guest writer at GQ Taiwan, and I can understand what u're saying by mentioning the quality of works degrading and stuff, but honestly, this is just how the industry works. I would love to write a whole essay about fashion shows in detail (u can check out my page on the GQ website), however, by the end of the day any criticism on works by big brands (for example bashing LV) are either not going to pass or the audiences are simply just not going to be interested. I'm a Gen Z myself and I'm wishing to rly change the world of journalism, to a place where I can share my authentic thoughts and produce quality content. That's y recently im also thinking about tryin to start my own youtube channel since at least that will be a platform of exposure where my ideas are allowed to flow in freedom.

Literally , i hate some magazines just put meaningless content in which, in my opinion , fashion magazine is democratic because ordinary fashion lover can also obtain fashion news through public fashion magazines not just about the people that works in fashion industry .And for me , i am the guy who is second person i mentioned before , i desire to obtain fashion news and deep essay , for other content about celebrity or advertisement i just feel boring . Fashion is a creative industry and fashion magazines are included. Obviously ,fashion magazines like vogue can't be called creative.

no because this applies to editorial content as well! Even though Vogue America has like the biggest platform ever and could easily pull any designer or catapult any emerging designer into relevance they choose to produce lackluster repetitive content that revolves around celebrities or is just something you’ve seen way too many times like its so basic compared to what print magazines did many years ago - like the editorials were actually memorable and in some ways revolutionary

I'd gladly buy a proper printed magazine, like a quality one with proper analysis of fashion as a reflection of the society, the floating signifiers within the field, intersections with politics, music and literature, criticism and praise, beautiful imagery as well why not. Probably even keep it for years in my bookshelf. But if it's like you say, in a day and age when we can all see the shows online and get direct shopping links from designers own ig-pages, "trends" whatever sharply defined thing they once used to be - aren't anymore, etc., why th would I give 10 bucks for Anna Wintour to tell me that "red is gonna be big this spring". It's borderline ridiculous. I'm surprised they haven't gone bankrupt already.
