About the style quiz... I tried to take it but gave up. Many of the photos don’t show the clothing or style very clearly, some appear to be essentially the same thing, and the last question requires that the reader already knows designers. If people already knew all those things, they would likely already have decided on a style. Personally, I saw very little variety within the choices but that could just be my untrained eye. Is there a beginner version?

Everyone seems to be obsessed with LOOKING elegant or classy without actually BEING elegant or classy. Underneath the "costume" they still speak and behave in trashy/classless ways.

Exactly. People seem to think that making a lot of money, owning nice things and dressing a certain way makes up for a proper education and humility...and I don't mean education just in terms of school and college, but knowing how to act in certain situations and having general knowledge, being well read etc.

"elegance isn't just an aesthetic" - Thank you, Anna...elegance is a value, a culture...elegance is behavior, not simply a fashion choice. The fashion choice is an outcome of the values of "old money".

The problem with this trend is that people are not just dressing in a certain way, they are pretending to live a life they don't, pretending to be part of a society they do not belong to. And the worst part: some actually act snobbish and stuck up as if they were "high society" or "superior". This "quiet luxury" trend is everything but quiet. TikTok has the power to ruin everything.

This video is so correct. It’s so unnecessarily boring. Black women look incredible in bright colors. The darker the skin the more color and even prints one can wear. Why waste that wearing khaki from head to toe? Style is better than “old money aesthetic”. Have some personality of your own. Life is too precious to waste it mimicking someone else’s life, or what you believe their life to be. Enjoy yours and live elegantly in your own way.

The problem with the aesthetic is that people copy it to be trendy when they don't have the substance to back it up. What I mean by this, is education, manners, and kindness. These are things that 20-year old trend copiers can never obtain without true work. The whole trend comes across as lazy and phony.

I really hate that word "classy" it is elitist by benefit of the word class. Replace with the word refined, people of all economic and social positions can be refined. By using the word Classy, one is denoting that one class is better than others.

I agree with all your points Anna. I notice that this aesthetic is very typically European centric and doesn’t understand that the idea of elegance can differ from culture to culture for eg in South Asian communities bright colours are considered fashionable and many even prefer to wear bright yellows, reds, jewel tones and gold because it compliments our skin tone rather than beige or greys which tends to wash us out. A lot of affluent people in India do wear bright tones and these colours flatter us more and look far more stylish than the typical old money aesthetic colours. The idea of luxury and beauty is also largely dependent on culture too.

You can tell who is rich by their skin quality, their dress fit, their hair quality, and their demeanour is never harsh or hurried, they're always calm, with grace and poise, their facial expressions are not "ghetto", for the lack of a better word. You can see that they go to high end salons, that they look very clean and neat becaus ethey don't use public transport that exposes them to dust or dirt, they have this glow about them, and "old money aesthetic" can't bring that, unless you are actually from an old money family. Definitely a lot more than just clothes.

Perhaps you should focus more on your own “amount of growth” and not passive aggressively criticizing Anna’s first videos, which were just fine by the way and haven’t changed significantly.

I like how you mention how elegance is flexible because it is versatile and not a "one size fits all" formula. This was really informative and well said. I don't hate the trends but I also couldn't exactly put a finger on why I didn't like the trends either- but you perfectly voiced it Anna. Alongside that, the trends never show these women how to behave. Behaviour and mannerisms can completely change the image you try to put fourth.

As a person who is fat and at the same time in love with the elegance community, the quiet luxury trend seems to segregate themselves and that is when I thought these are just trends. I have watched Anna's videos for the longest time and one thing that this channel taught me is that the core of elegance is not just how you dress to the occasion but also your interpersonal skills. People tend to go for visual images and forgot everything about voice images. Voice images consist of how you speak and the content of your speech. Thank you Anna for this video. It gives a lot of clarification, especially for fat women who think that being elegant is only for a certain type of body.

I want to give my 2 cents here. When I started my transformation journey (also thanks to you Anna!) the thing I noticed more is that when I started to dress more feminine, with better quality clothes, better material, I automatically started to feel better and to behave better in social circumstances. For me everything that regards aesthetics is a tool I can use to achieve my true goal which is to be more kind, more feminine, more elegant, more passionate. In the end I hope that this trend will not stop at the mere aesthetic side but will help people to be more respectful and compassionate as well.

Everyone has their “take” and definition of this so called trend. Personally for me, I see it as a modernist esthetic which I have always been about. There are as many definitions on this as there are content creators honestly. What is sucky about the human race is we have to categorize people based upon their appearance and what they wear, where they live etc. When I was in high school, I yearned for uniforms to level the playing field. But going to public school, it didnt happen. Its clothing people, you can lose it all in a fire 😂

I think the difference though is that you (and others) are on a journey to elevate yourself, which includes dressing more elegant, more feminine, etc but the clothing is only one part. You didn’t just put on more expensive clothes and magically changed who you are. But with this quiet luxury trend, a lot of people are just dressing that way to follow the season and be cool - it’s just cool now and next year something else will be cool. I have also seen a lot of snobbish and unkind attitude on quiet luxury influence content, where the message or tone has been negative towards people who like logos, flashy fashion and other not quiet aesthetic. Being unkind and looking down on people is never elegant. At the end of the day you get a bunch of people all having the same bags, clothes, watches, etc that are on trend at the moment and really not that quiet / if-you-know-you-know anymore.

@@s.a.4358 This is so true! You want to know something else that I feel is so fundamentally authentic? Go to a high school and check out these young women/students discovering who they are. Most of them will wear anything and not care whatsoever because its about what they are as a person. Especially in a rural area where kids (and many adults), have limited options. The most elegant, quite luxury, whatever the “trend” is, is followed by women who care what others think of them and can afford to do so. The most kindest, most elevated people I have met have been beggars/homeless on the street. They are vulnerable, authentic and yet elevated.

2 points: 1. I am Polish, and I like including cultural touches - I try to do it in a smart way (a small pattern, my granny's brooch, amber jewellery, etc). I also love seeing other cultures' unique traits - I live in London and oh boy do some people look stunning here! I am no ethnics expert but there is a difference to what people from different cultures tend to wear. 2. Colours, patterns and tailoring that elevate best different skin colours/body types. Did we all forget about this? Are we all going to wear white-beige-black blazers and turtlenecks, forgetting all these articles about what to wear to elevate our strengths? I like elegance and follow Anna since pandemic - but the elegance that brushes off our unique cultural heritage, our unique individual traits - this is not for me. I wouldn't like all London to look like the Roys. I love the diversity around

I'm Arab and I agree. I tried the whole dressing neutral in blazers and trousers yet in the gulf Arab countries, that is considered too simple and bland. Arabs love a bit of drama in their dress with patterns, unique colors and exotic pieces. I felt like a knock-off wannabe rich European than an elegantly dressed Arab woman. Plus it's too hot to wear blazers and turtle necks here 😅

Yes but this trend is a huge step in the right direction. Women getting away from the ripped jeans,, hooker outfits, hoodies, t shirts, sweatpants and other workout clothes and wearing dresses, skirts and pants of high quality material is a win for civilization. Fingers crossed if more people now dress this way it will put them in a mood to act civilized and elegant.

I hate tik tok, I had it installed a year ago and immediately removed it. As a psychologist, I can affirm that it is made to create addiction and has shown such serious consequences similar to the use of cocaine; people do not use their critical sense to filter what they see there. I absolutely love this. My mom is one of the most elegant lady I know too. (She is in her 50s) Before all this trend & social media, she is already embodying her true feminine elegant self. Over the years of being brought up by my mom, elegance isn’t just what you wear or how much money you have in your bank. It’s about knowing your inner-self, being true to your own authenticity and not “being easily moulded or influenced by others” / “copying” a trend. My mom knows herself so well that what she chooses instantly makes her look elegant, classy and sophisticated effortlessly. Most important thing, my mom always emphasise a lot about character building. The way we speak, how we hold ourselves, the way we treat others, being kind, compassionate, considerate and definitely always being true to ourselves. There’s nothing wrong in wanting to dress “old money/ quiet luxury” or any other trend. We can be inspired by it. But through the inspiration, we certainly need to find our own sense of style & what suits our character best. What matters most is when we’re truly authentic in our core being, being effortlessly ourselves is what true elegance & beauty is.

I am very blessed to have been brought to Anna’s Channel during covid. To me, what I learned from her- elegance is a personal development which comes along with learning about etiquette, how to carry oneself, being confident and dress according to the occasion, etc. It’s very less about fashion.

I hate the idea that we can only be elegant or classy when we wear neutral colors. This is a very narrow mindset. Thank you for the video!

I know. I not only like bright, vibrant colors, I also look best in them. I *hate* beige and pastel colors in general with a passion 😅. White is ok, but impractical. One stain and it goes into the trash - and I care too much about sustainability for that. And black is not very suitable for summer. If I can't be classy in pink or violet or turquoise, I'm out.

I tried to do the whole neutral color thing and I got bored sooooo fast! It felt suffocating and non expressive. I love elegance but I HATE being restricted to certain colors.

I am conflicted on this one. As the mother of two teenaged girls, I may have a different perspective. I definitely agree that elegance goes far beyond clothing choices, and forcing yourself into a monochromatic look just to stay on trend is ridiculous. Granted, I haven’t seen all of the “quiet luxury”videos, but I don’t think these people are necessarily claiming to be something they’re not. Most seem like young people trying to find their way in the world. Maybe they just like the style. They could do FAR worse. At least they don’t look like they belong on a street corner and they’re not wearing pajamas to the store. Clothing can make you feel better. We all know it. Maybe our current society would do well to start dressing better. Who knows? Maybe the true elegance will follow?

Exactly, I think its teaching people how to be appropriate for certain situations. When my mother was being raised in the 1950's girls and young women knew how to dress. It was evident in just watching films of that era. Rather than being restrictive, it helped elevate society. When one dresses well, not only are they treated more kindly, but they treat others in a more gentle manner.

I agree. For most young people, this is just another phase, experimenting, trying to find out what suits them. There is no need to think too much of it. This trend is at least better than sloppy, tacky ones. I am sure by next season, most people will move on to something else. Anna doesn't need to worry about other content creators invade her territory.

I wish is totally realistic what are you saying.. but here in California is a shame that you still seeing at all times of the day girls in Pj’s and shorts that they showing their butts hanging!! I always wonder.. Do they parents know? . If it will always be true the kids are dressing stylish either old money or “quiet Luxury”and trying to find themselves of style. I will definitely prefer anything that bad taste and “ Lolita Styles” for sure.

I agree with your analysis. Sincere kindness and gentle speech is absolutely essential to elegance.

Once again Anna, you prove how smart and thoughtful you are.

For the Gwyneth Paltrow example, what she wore and the color palette probably was a combo of what she knew to wear and what her legal team advised to her styling team. Their objective was to win her case and they're going to take any factors that would help. For anyone that's been selected for jury duty, there's a basic dress code including no logos or messaging. Any plaintiffs or defendants in a civil or criminal case aren't going to want to stick out in a way that would sway a jury or deciding judge.

I LOVE how Anna is non pretentious, and she definitely was the first to promote "elegance" concept, especially in this day and age where we are constantly bombarded with trashiness all over social media/TV 🤭

As a woman who has built a successful career for herself, I follow your channel so that I am reminded that in this masculine competitive world, feminine elegance will always shine through because it is more than just an aesthetic. It is a way of life, a home in the self for all women. Every point you made is 💯.

Don't forget that a trend is just that a trend, so in a couple of month they will be using whatever is trend at that moment, while elegance is a life style not a trend

Someone said on tiktok, "You can't be old money if you don't come from an old money family. You can't be stealth wealth if you don't have the wealth. Old money families know each other for generations, and you can't bs your way in private elite clubs by just having old money aesthetics with zero connections or respectable background." And a lot of people who are not it, attacked her for saying that.

Old money esthetics and Quiet luxury will only be a trend for some but it will always be a lifestyle/habit for the few.

That’s my style always. I don’t follow trends.

As a Gen Xer, I love this trend because it reminds me of the preppy fashions on the 80s, which were a much better time to be alive than today, quite honestly. A lot of today's fashion trends are just ridiculous.

As I get older (I am currently 25 years old) I have noticed that I really want pieces in my closet that will last me for many years. I don't buy clothes often and look for timeless and quality pieces. So maybe it does look like old money aesthetic but I know that I will wear it for years to come. I do feel more confident in myself when I wear more neutral colors. And to me, that makes a big difference in how others view me and how I view myself. I really enjoyed this video as you mentioned that having class is not only in the clothes that you wear but your attitude towards life in general.

if I had to wear beige everyday I would go crazy. Thanks for sharing your opinion on this, it has encouraged me think about it all a little more and I'm glad I choose colours and styles that suit me while always having elegance in mind with the values that I wish to uphold.

Thank you for putting this into perspective. So many people get this wrong. Elegance is a LOT more than just dressing expensively or copying the “old money” aesthetic. If you don't behave elegantly, meaning having good manners, being kind, polite, etc., then what you’re wearing will not be what people will notice.

Unfortunately I have seen quiet a few “quiet luxury” videos lately where the person was looking down on others who like to wear logos, flashy prints or colours, etc. That is definitely not elegant or classy behaviour, and also indicated to me that these people care more about trends and being “in” than about the minimalist / quiet aesthetic itself. My personal style is more minimalistic , neutral, etc so I guess I fit into this current trend, but that doesn’t mean I need to look down on others. Just this morning I saw a lady with a turquoise pixie cut and colourful glasses and I though she looked really nice. I would never wear her outfit, but I think on her it looked amazing and she also carried it off beautifully.

You teach elegance, the full package. This trend is just that another fashion fad/trend. You teach the manners and mindset that needs to be included with clothing style. Old money does wear beautiful light, bright colors.

Elegant people are those whose manners are noble and not vulgar.

Years ago I went with a friend to a fine jewelry store on Madison Ave owned by his aunt. While I was browsing his aunt whispered to him "she must be wealthy,she's not wearing any jewelry". That stuck with me 45 years later . I keep it minimal,no costume jingle jangle. That's quiet luxury.

That just goes to show how much about wealth is perception and assumption. You could have not been wearing jewelry because you simply didn’t feel like it, but because of the belief in the mind of your friend’s aunt, she filled in that you would be rich. Perception and deception. That’s why I believe this old money aesthetic is bullshit. Just be yourself. If you have money, no need to show it off, or try hard to fit in.

After I changed the way I dress I started working at a job I had several years ago. The employees I knew from back then gave me compliments on the new style and how I carried myself. I just told them that I was trying to have and portray more respect for myself and I felt more feminine this way. I used to dress very nerdy and without much intent. It really is a mindset more than a trend.

It’s just elegant style. People calling it old money is juvenile. I’ve had this style for over 10 years. Recently someone told me that my style is old money cuz they watched few tiktoks and think they already know everything. Elegance is a lifestyle, it’s a state of mind and the clothes represent that. An elegant person does not want to offend others or demand attention. Attention is appreciated but not demanded.

one queen of quiet luxury is definitely Kate Middleton, she is always elegant, discreet and we can see she behaves with a lot of kindness

If a person has class deep down he or she will show it in the way they dress look act and speak. Anna is very right there needs to be more shows like this

Your gorgeous RED shirtwaist says it all😊. A ‘ quiet luxury’ aesthetic is just the cover on the book. If the content isn’t of value- then it’s like putting a hand tooled leather book jacket on a trashy novel. True elegance comes from within.

I’m absolutely in favor of this trend, even though it seems funny that it’s a “thing” now. I hope the result is that good clothing will make a return in mid-level stores, such as Nordstrom. It used to be where I could get quality fabrics in these stores such as cashmere, merino, and silk. Now it’s all man-made fabrics that don’t hang well. I still wear classic clothes I purchased 20-30 years ago and the quality fabrics still look good.

I totally agree with you Anna. It about attitude and a mind set not a trend. How you carry yourself and not how you dress yourself. Elegance is a 24 hour mind set.

Hello Anna! I totally understand what message you are conveying here. I’m from India and we wear kurti, sarees instead of shirt pants and dresses. Also embroidery and colours are a must. For us to be elegant here, I can’t imagine sporting neutrals. I think we can be elegant and at the same time can feature our unique personalities and cultures. Love your videos. Saree indeed is a type of luxurious elegant dress. So do Nyonya Kebaya. Seriously I can't imagine if Nyonyas from the Baba and Nyonya community (a.k.a. Peranakan) has to wear their clothing in neutral and to ditch all their colourful Batik Sarongs and Nyonya Kebaya LMAO (If you are not familiar with Nyonya Kebaya, maybe you wanna google up a bit. Malaysia Airline stewardesses wearing colourful custom-made Batik printing Nyonya Kebaya as well =D)

Yes!! One can definitely look elegant and classy while still being colourful, wear bigger jewellery, etc. I think the quiet luxury trend is very westen focused and discounts the traditional style of many places such as India but also African countries, many places in South America, etc where traditional clothes and especially festive clothes are colourful and ornate.

I also want to give an other example… I am from southern Germany and our traditional dress, which a lot of people wear for occasions and events, is also colourful and ornate (although less than a saree). However it is also clothing that people that are not from that region will sometimes wear out of context as a costume and almost to make fun, be sexy, etc. I don’t think people always mean it badly, but I find it very disrespectful to basically take clothing and decide that it is not worth of respect because it is different.

Beauty and what we wear is skin deep, but being ugly is to the bone. Eventually all the external beauty will fade away and all we will have is what is inside of us. Are we kind, gentle in spirit, sensitive towards the needs of humans and animals. Those elegant qualities will last till the end and show when the external is removed. Love your channel Anna!

Thank you, Anna, for your video! As a woman of color, I would also add that certain cultures (many countries in Africa) associate the black colour with death/mourning. In everyday life, they wear very colourful outfits (every colour has a symbolic meaning). The Quiet Luxury trend implies that people from those cultures cannot be elegant.

I love quit luxury and old money style. This is absolutely stunning and how everyone should dress, in my opinion.

Anna.. I have been watching your videos for several years. I am a senior on a very limited income and I love what you are doing. I think it was Tim Gunn who referred to " the slobification of America." We need you to bring style and elegance back. I agree that doing it with grace and humility is important. Please continue to educate us. You have a niche ( one I love) that will not attract everyone but I think it's very important to keep informing us about elegance, attitude, style and absolutely - fashion. I have learned to elevate my look and I feel good about it. Also working on elevating kindness and compassion. Thank you for all your videos.

I noticed with the trending aesthetics that they tended to be more like a costume of the wealthy, or elite. Very snobby and full of oneself. Yet, elegance and classiness involved etiquette and manners, wasn't as exclusive, and emphasized education and politeness. It reminds me of back in the day, working at a very upscale restaurant. We had high net worth patrons. But, there was a stark difference between those acting wealthy and those that were truly wealthy. "New money" or those acting wealthy were rude, crass, and full of themselves. Those that were elegant, or truly "old money" were polite and never had a bad word to say, and were the staff's favorite patrons! Classy, elegant people are what the world needs more of.

i noticed that too when i was bombarded with short vids of old money aesthetic with just literally compilation of images of the old riches being compaired to new money. i find it "not it" coz it cheapens as it mainstreamed esp for the younger gen as now anyone can claim they're elegant just bcoz of aesthetic w/o the wisdom of it or refining their personality

For the most part of my life. I purchase what I like. Yes, looking back at photos I think what the heck was I thinking. I was brought up being trained in class and proper manners. My goal is to be the best version of me. I’ve been following you in your early days back when you were interviewed on TV. I recall the not so nice references they made at your expense. In one of your videos you made reference to choosing the best man to provide for you and future children. I was very impressed. As you are correct. Ladies, we give so such of ourselves. You have always been genuine & direct. I’d always viewed this “Old Money/Quiet Luxury” trend as a terribly watered down version of the elegance you’re teaching. I remember when you were starting, you unapologetically talk about bagging elite men and I loved that about you. I totally agree with you. I often get told I am elegant. But I am not rich and I have never been into designer labels or clothes. My style is pretty boho actually. But I think people mainly see me as elegant, because of the way I carry myself and I think it is also about attitude. I always try to be kind to everyone and have genuine compassion for people. I think these qualities are elegant. You can never be elegant ,if you have a bad attitude or are mean and rude to people. Elegant people are friendly, gracious and kind. They can relate to anyone, they do not act superior to others.

being elegant is not a game. it is a core belief that you don't have to convince anyone of anything...your comfort in who you are and what you stand for is the Elegance in life

My only concern is how people jump on these trends, but are so confidently incorrect on some things, then they use such misinformation to think they’re actually going to fool the real rich that they’re one of them. For example I see posts on TikTok that go, “3 brands that scream Old Money: 1. Chanel 2. Polo Ralph Lauren 3. Brook Brothers” yet the actual old money stay away from brands.

Oh yes. The truly wealthy (if they care about clothes at all) often buy unique quality boutique things that come with no labels on them anywhere or it is custom made and tailored from scratch. So inaccurate.

I'm so happy you told all this, Anna - this is exactly what I feel about this "trend". "TikTok people" treat elegance so shallow, like something you can just buy, because it's in fashion right now. I’ve been waiting for this topic ! I started to see so many « old money aesthetics » out of nowhere, although I love to dress preppy & romantic/bohème it got overwhelming. Whereas Anna has been teaching us elegant etiquette since years

About Iris Apfel, she is interesting in that she popularized "maximalism", which is a current trend. I think it's a tricky aesthetic to pull off with elegance. It seems like it only really works for older ladies, imo.

It's really a mindset that one embraces as one is more mature, one starts caring less and less what others think as one lives longer on this earth. I've met younger, eccentric types who can pull it off too. Of course it all depends on the social/business sphere one works.

Once you choose hope, anything's possible.

Honestly loved how you push individualism and being true to yourself in this Anna! I also loved how you admitted your mistakes in the past videos and said that people misunderstood you, I remember thinking negatively of you at first but since you actually admitted your mistakes and critiqued against the old money trend, saying how it's very constricting and lacks context, I love your channel even more. Honestly, the fact that a lot of youtubers like you are admitting that these aesthetics don't seem to be for fun anymore and are just oversaturated, simplified versions of what they were meant to be is so true, you can be an individual but no one can really fit into an aesthetic!! Also I love how you said anyone can be elegant, a rich person can dress classy but not act elegant while someone who's poor can be dressed "shabbily" but be the most elegant/ classiest person you know!! I admire how you said elegant is about character!!
