You remind me a lot of how Wendy Williams think. She has always has said in her show. She can't be everyone's friend if she is going to talk about them on tv.That's her job and that's how she gets payed. Yes she can be over the top at times. But most of the time she is keeping it real. And I think in this time people rather be fake then keeping it real.

Apparently this is a documentary called "The Look" by Marion Hume. She was interviewed around 2019 by Tank Magazine tankmagazine.com/tank/2019/09/marion-hume/ - Michael Gross was very well-known in his day, but you may also want to check out Bernadine Morris who was one of the older journalists (You may think of her as old-fashioned) and there is also a great interview with Elsa Klench who had early success as a fashion journalist in the US with CNN - Link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJx1ztadj6S8l84.html - I lived for this show when I was a kid in high school. I majored in apparel design but I lived for the NY Times reviews Amy Spindler, Guy Trebay, Michael Roberts (English writer for New York Magazine) - lots of people who have either retired or passed away.

When you mentioned the part where other journalists look down upon fashion journalism when they themselves are influenced by fashion ; it reminded me of that one scene in devil wears Prada where Meryl streep's character scolds her assistant about the "cerulean" colour of her sweater and how it was important

I think it's important for journalists to talk about the collection in a way that leaves the readers/consumers to form their own opinion about the collection. Instead opinions are being fed blindly.

I may probably be naive, but in my personal opinion fashion journalists nowadays are not that relevant. What we see on the catwalk is usually not even produced. Most of the time you're going to get different items in the shops. Take as an example, Prada: her shows were highly conceptualised (ugly-chic) but in the shops, you could find the classic middle-class Milanese sweater or business bag. A fashion show is more about creating an event with good visibility on social media. Even in the past Franca Sozzani's Vogue Italia was all about well-established photographers making a visual and emotional impact on the magazine target audience. On the other side, as a brand, you sell a "social status", not a simple bag but something that people feel they need in order to be socially connected to a trendy tribe. As a result, the industry has been over-producing for decades over-priced items of low quality, polluting the world with sometimes not disposable garbage. However, the history of fashion is something else and someone like Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier will be considered more influential than other more successful multinationals of their times. Someone like Elsa Schiaparelli will be at the same level as Coco Chanel. It really depends what is your approach to fashion, if you're a student, a historian, a buyer, a consumer or a low-paid journalist (maintained by your wealthy family) attending fashion shows and other social events. But still, again the pandemic teaches us that nowadays anyone can see everything everywhere, live or on-demand. What's the future of fashion press then? I don't know, maybe catching up with social media and becoming something else, as they have been doing for a while so far, with controversial results.

I feel like it makes me learn so much about fashion. but you need to learn how to improve you editing skills and just making videos visually pleasing. Cuz i feel like thats how your channel will blow up. Also really appreciate the fact that you talked about how people in fashion industry do not really care about you unless you are white rich and (being british also helps). Idk why they always favor one opinion over another even though they aren’t listening to what the person is saying.

    1. I think confidence and objectivity are super important for journalistic integrity. But People like Andre Leon Talley with his encyclopaedic knowledge of fashion cannot be discounted just because of his dependence on magazines and Karl. The information that he adds to his articles that may be swayed by his relationship are to important for the industry. 2. The information about the designers even their charters are important when it concerns decisions about diversity, sustainability and working conditions. Even politics in my eyes. There are to many options to buy something from somebody who profits from or supports powers against you. 3. Am with you 100% on Robin and she herself often says her greatness comes from being a journalist, not fashion journalist, great knowledge without dependence. e.g her promotion at the post.

Keep doing what you're doing cause very sadly, what I now refer to as the '"'so called fashion world"' is just another damaging dangerous industry that has it's place 'as all the rest'... So you young man have so much & many,a multitude to write about,so go ahead don't stop & please even if it's a small magazine would be better than nothing. But of course there's definitely more to it all, though as you mentioned you are filled & fully passionate about the fashion industry.

@FashionRoadman I might just be late to the party, but I feel like the full lenght documentary you were looking for is «The Look - Episode 1 Runway Fashion Week Documentary»: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGGMsdqHiLjThKg.html Also: I am very happy to have found your channel! I very much appreciate your perspective and insight on fashion / fashion Journalism. My studies in London also went in that direction and I can fully agree with you on the variety of people with different motivations / ambitions entering into this industry sometimes also being - let's say - a difficult factor to «navigate». Personally I am also more on the socio-cultural impact that fashion has - if not creates. Long story short: Your channel is a breath of fresh air to me and I love the depth of your observations etc. Sincerely Seraina

A judge ought not merely practice innocence, but also the art of credibility upon which their profession rests. Isn't a journalist the same, trading in the art of credibility? In that regard, a journalist ought not be seen taking in substantial favors from a company.

If you’re black and female: forget it. Black men get on far better in the industry as they are deemed less of a threat to a status quo as far as fashion editors go who, in the main, are mostly women.

This is also why you see being openly gay is more ok in the industry, people are bigoted and associate being gay with a lack of masculinity and a more feminine behavior so gay men in their mind don’t threaten their pathriarcal view of masculinity and fashion feminine “shallowness”

I’m sorry to make it political, but fashion is political and the downplaying of the relevance of fashion in rooted in mysoginy. Fashion is stereotypical consider feminine so isn’t respect enough. And by the way even if a lot of fashion journalist would go around and go to happy hour with powerful and rich people they wouldn’t be so different From a lot of mainstream polical journalist..

Fashion journalism is so outdated, overrated and uninspiring now. With direct access to fashion through various channels in these modern age is there still a need for fashion dictatorship through the press? I for one can't care less about some fashion journalist's irrelevant huffing and puffing which is hardly more educated and certainly less important than my spending choices and power.
