Actually we did this in the AF. When I was trained as a SF we were told the base, the planes, and everything we guarded was more important than some officer or senior enlisteds feelings. We actually had a few incidents with officers and higher enlisted. They would go and cry to the unit commander who would than let the base general know. Base general was hardcore and loved her SF. She had our backs 100%. It’s the weirdest feeling seeing a general escort some colonel to come apologize to you for him being an asshole. It was surreal

In all honesty, if someone is in the wrong, they are in the wrong no matter if they are an E1 or O1, or Chief of Staff, rules and regs and the UCMJ supersedes all ranks. And further more it pisses me off when someone legitimately tries to use their rank to get out of any form of accountability. Had a Lt Col, threaten me with his rank if I didn't lie for his PT test results, and that made me sick to my very core... (I'm not saying I stood up, I'm saying I lied because I was an E3 on a super small base where everyone knew everyone, and did not have a snow ball chance in hell with fighting it, it would have been my word against an O5's word)

Secondly you can have an E3 grade a PT test...It is part of the personnel job code for the USAF....Since part of their job is working on the gym on base....Secondly the only reason why I was counting in the first place, was because the way they did it is, one person does the exercise, and the other person that is also taking the test counts for that person, then when the time limit comes up the person collecting scores comes down the line, one by one, and asks for the numbers. Then once all the numbers are gathered, the person that was counting switches places and becomes the person taking the test, and the other person counting their repetitions, and the person that just did the sit ups is now counting. I didn't think that I would have to explain this. But please do show the link in R bullshit I would love to see it. Do other branches not do it like this, where you have a line of people taking the pt test, and they pair them up in twos, where one person counts the push ups/sit ups, and then switch roles after the time limit is up?*

This reminds me of a great story, once the great and legendary fleet admiral chester nimitz was being transported in a sea plane in san Francisco when it went down in the water. It wasn’t a terrible crash and they ended up transferring into a lifeboat wrapped in blankets for warmth, Chester was standing up for one reason or another when a brand spankin new 18 year old coxswain yelled at him and basically said “if you moved maybe we could get something done, and sit down you” basically the 1940s “sit yo ass down” to which nimitz did just that but as he did his arm was exposed just enough for the sailor to see the most amount of stripes he had ever seen. Upon realizing he had just yelled at the commander and chief of the pacific fleet among many other things he immediately turned red and stumbled to apologize to which Nimitz replied “stick to your guns sailor, you were quite right” and that is the mark of our greatest flag officer in the history of this nation.

"Don't confuse your rank with my authority" is actually a very appropriate response to an officer trying to pull rank while being belligerent and trying to circumvent the rules. You don't start with that, but if they try to pull rank, nope, you shut them down, respectfully. Anyone saying otherwise, like the butter bar doing the training, like knew who had them, and an officer can't be getting shown up by a pvt. Some officers need to be taken down several pegs. Being an officer does not mean you're god's gift to the world, it simply means who have to make the decisions and ultimate authority rests with you, nothing more. You're not better trained, better educated, none of it. Also, I'm an officer and constantly reinforce this to my enlisted. I'm not special, smarter, better trained, or anything else like that. I simply have to make the decisions and take responsibility when those decisions produce less than desirable results, and also provide a shit screen from higher up so they can do their jobs effectively.

Great post! Loved reading this detailed response. Glad there are still service members that actually have good insight on our military. As a former NCO and as of yesterday a retire LTC, one thing the new military should remember is "chain of command". In this scenario, the private should have went up to the squad leader, platoon Sgt etc. and notified his chain. If the officer felt disrespected in any way, it should have came the other way down. Officers are definitely not gods gift to the world, and we seen many Generals roofed off for recruit level mistakes. As an officer, I felt I should rarely have direct interaction with any private unless its a morale function for example family day, holiday meals, etc or directed to by the subordinates chain of command. Tony, really thank you for your service...

Never break character, you should of toughed it out. I was on a roving patrol for the camp guard when there was a real terrorism threat from the I.R.A. We were tactically moving around camp after midnight, fully armed, and my oppo behind me called me over as he had seen the orderly officer following us. I said, no, it's a fucking terrorist. So we walked him passed the assault course where we set a trap and ambushed him. He started saying well done lads, etc trying to calm us after issuing a challenge to him so I cocked my rifle and let the safety off, nick click on an SLR. And ordered him to the ground where we kicked him over and pulled the balaclava off his head. Pardon the pun, we did it just for kicks, my oppo was not comfortable with it but we didn't break character. Needless to say we got a lovely pat on the back next day from our RSM whilst the rest of the shift got beasted all day with no sleep for not doing their job correctly.

So, I went and called the CO to come down and get his new LT. CO must not of liked him because he sent the Sergeant Major down who hated all LT’s to run him off. I had a lovely encounter with a 2LT, brand new and fresh out of school. I was a 45K at the time (had maybe 2 years in, if that) working on an Abrams and in the process of pulling the breach block. 2LT started playing with the overhead crane controller for some damn reason. I tried to be polite and respectful; while I was in the process of getting down from the turret to retrieve the controller, the breach finally came off of the bolts and pinned the kid inside (nothing too bad, only broke his glasses). After we get the kid inside out of the tank, I (a lowly PFC at the time), started lambasting this 2LT like I lost my damn mind. Really long story short, he left and not long after, my squad leader, platoon sergeant and Chief appeared and started my ass chewing. I then had to go see First Sergeant, who decided to chew it some more. I thought for sure that I was going back to becoming an E-Nothing private. Top took me into the commander’s office and I got my ass chewed yet again. In the end though, no article for me...no extra duty and no loss in rank...just several ass chewings. Best part was that 2LT never came into the shop again and he avoided me (a goofy ass PFC) like the plague.

As an E-3 I had an incident with an O-6, the next 0-6 in line for 0-7 in fact! See, I'd given a hazard report to the COL's "Sexetary" 3-wks prior, with a suspense of 5-working days, to avoid sending it thru base distribution and incurring further delays I always dropped off and picked up my reports in person. Anyhow, the secretary lost the report, 3x! Now in those days we used electric typewriters and if you made any mistakes you had to start over because COL's didn't accept reports with either typos or correction fluid/tape smudges, at least that COL didn't! So naturally by the 3rd time I was pretty pissed and I proceeded to ask the secretary if she actually read the suspense date, you know, the big 1" high red ink stamp in the upper left hand corner, she proceeded to tell me she was busy and didn't have time to read everything that came across her desk, at which point my stupid ass replied "but isn't that your job"? At this point the COL (soon to be General) kicked his office door open, stormed out and said, "You, Airmen, GTFO of my office before you piss me off"! I responded by snapping to attention, saluting, saying yes sir, about faced and marched out! It was a block to the ramp and about 100 yards to get back to the control tower/fire station, and as I started getting close I realized there were 3 people standing there watching and waiting for me, my commander (0-5) ,the fire chief (E-9) and my civilian A/C (GS-10). My commander says "What in the hell did you say to that COL", I told my story, the chief just glared at me and marched off, apparently to pissed off to speak, and my A/C just shook his head grinning! See, in those days HQ would inspect us frequently, and one of the main things they looked for was busted suspense dates, 3-4 of those and you fail, and if you fail the squadron fails, the group fails, and the wing fails, and then you can look forward to a month long exercise with 12-hr shifts 7-days a wk wearing MOPP-4 Chem gear and doing firefighting exercises 3-4 times a day, dragging MA1A barrier webbing and cables, dragging firehose and 175 lb dummies, etc... and then a new I G. Inspection! So it was literally drilled into us to never bust a suspense date, so they really couldn't say much to me for trying!

THIS! I remember getting this "setup" by my senior DS in basic training as well. Fast forward years later to the dirty 630 and I was having a bad day on patrol. Pulled over a Major for rolling through a stop sign. Barely got past the formalities of who I was and why I pulled him over and he was flapping his gums off about who he was and how I'll get in trouble for attempting to issue him a citation. It was at that very moment where I blacked out and said the greatest words an MP could say to anyone (in a clam and firm MP voice), "Sir don't confuse your rank with my authority." Handed him the citation and the look he gave me was pure shock. 5 minutes later SPC Kirven was standing tall at the PMO getting a firm talking too. hahah! Good times!

We had an LT in the briefing with third party training and we had an LT saying something profoundly stupid. There were about 50 of us there. One of the E6's said "Sir, just shut up and push". The LT was shocked that an enlisted member would say this. He looked to the CO for top cover and the CO said "what are you looking at me for!? Do what the man said!" He was shocked, so he knocked out 20 four-counts and got up. He never opened his mouth again. From that point on he kept his mouth shut and his ears open and turned out to be one of the best leaders I ever had the privilege to serve with. A story my old E6 TL told us was he had a fresh LT hop in his JERRV during pre-deployment training and the LT said "act like I'm not here". My TL, an E4 at the time, said "sir, just sit down, shut up, and maybe you'll learn something". LT said "Excuse me!?" My TL repeated " I said, sit down and shut up and maybe you'll learn something!". The LT looked at my TL's TL (an E6) and said "Your SPC just mouthed off to me!" The E6 repeated, "Sir, sit down shut up and maybe you'll learn something!" The LT was dumbfounded, he couldn't really get out because the truck was already moving at this point. But when he did, he went and complained to the CO who said "Well, did you learn anything?" He too was quiet after that.

The MAJ had disrespected my soldiers, was wrong (and he knew it) with a later 'regret' voiced to me (close to a apology). The matter stayed between us where I didn't smoke him with his superiors. Once upon a time, my team, as part of a drill took "hostages" in a training room. The whole base was involved. The "hostages were new to the post so they didn't know who we were (and no one told them it was a drill before we busted in the door). So they believed everything happening was real, gunfire, food, negotiations, everything. We held them (men and women) for 4 hours, at gun point, tied up and blind folded. When the drill ended, we announced that the drill was over. We placed our "hostages" against the wall and began cutting them loose. Well, one was a brand spanking new LT. He decided was was going to effect an escape not believing it had only been a drill. As he made his move (still tied up), I pulled my knife back so he wouldn't get cut and in doing so I cut myself (minor on the hand). Well, that LT tasted the wall that day at the hands of a PFC. A glorious moment, that he could do nothing about.

I actually said the same thing to a Lt. Colonel at Westpointe in 1988 during graduation and again in Saudi in 1991. It worked once and the other time I got the Captain involved.

Back in the 80s, I was an E2 straight from Jump School at Ft. Bragg. Waiting in the Motor Pool to be released after my first "real" FTX (WHY can't the armory just check the Expletive weapons in already - I'm ready to hit the dorms!) Saw a dude look in the window (it was dark out, and I couldn't make out his flash on that beautiful red beret). Asked my Specialist "I wonder what the F he wants." As his eyes got huge, and he turned, I noticed that it was just a little EAGLE on the beret. The freaking Brigade commander stormed in and asked me "Do you know who I am" (not at the time!), and "What did you say?" (I fibbed). Needless to say, my desk was moved and I was ordered to never look out the window again.

My granddad was a MP with Co. A , 797th Mp's attached to the 3rd Service Command during WWII. He was clearing out a bar off base one night that the Division Commander happened to be at. The Major General asked under whose authority he was closing the bar under, my grandfather replied, " Yours Sir." My grandfather was promoted the next day from PFC to Sergeant E-5.

I was somehow very lucky with my insubordination... Lol I've yelled at a Sgt. Openly argued and disrespected a warrent while sitting down with my feet on the table while the the commander and Top were standing behinder. ,while sending first sergeant memes of her while she was yelling at me.(she was bad mouthing everyone when she was the only one who failed the evaluation) And on several occasions refused to salute a certain LT (chode). now never do any of this. But..... Lol i was in air defense and there they do kinda push the common sense that nomatter the rank ,if a individual is more knowledgeable about the task at hand then people of rank that know nothing need to just bow out... It's a thought that some officers don't respect but some are chill. I was a specialist ...... Everyone respects the mafia lol
