How Wong Kar Wai Made Chungking Express With $0
Фильм және анимация
Chungking Express has brought Wong Kar-wai international success despite all the difficulties and shortcomings of the project. In this documentary I explore the creation and style of the director’s highly acclaimed film from 1994 with footage from interviews and talks. Explained by his colleagues such as Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee, Tony Leung and his long-time partner and cinematographer Christopher Doyle.

Which, btw, is in no way a bad way of video essay about filmmaking. It says a lot when a single formula has lasted for over 10 years on KZread (yes, EFAP is 10 years old, goddammit !). And I wish for it to keep going for another 10 years. But yes, agreed that it is refreshing to see a change of pace from time to time.

Theres a million people who do "video essays" of WKW. You do the real thing. You and the guy who found the lens they used on Fallen Angels (The 6.8mm/aka the 9.8 + angle adapter)

@@sorenkairyeah it's just a documentary, there was no narration, no input, just editing. A little disappointing. The editing is great but it needs more substance.
The first time I watched Chungking Express was when I was 18 years old. I always felt it was cheesy and chaotic, like listening to a stranger recount their dream. Ten years later, I tried watching it again, and this time I truly recognized it as a masterpiece. It is a film for those who are lonely and ponder the meaning of love. If you don't empathize with and understand the psychological developments of the characters, it will be very difficult to grasp its true meaning.

Every once in a while, a rare event of astronomical infrequency occurs. This is one of those blessèd times that the inscrutable algorithm serves up something special to a jaded audience, thereby giving more exposure to a deserving creator. Keep going, dude. Keep going.

BEAUTIFULLY put together. I've only seen three Wong Kar-Wai films so far: Chunking Express, In the Mood for Love, Fallen Angels. I'm actively watching them slowly so I don't rush it and run out of them quickly.

I really like this short-documentary style that you managed to achieve. I think is enlighting to listen to people that were involved in the film, or people like Tarantino talking about it. Keep it that way man! Congrats.
This film has been in my top 5 since I first saw it in the late 90s. The 'other half' of the story, "Fallen Angels," is fantastic too.

I feel lucky to have been recommended this video. It has a very different style than other cinema video essays. It feels great to watch.
No life is complete without spending a few nights at the Chungking Mansions. =) Chinese cinema are so underrated in the West. Thank you for showing the English speaking world what they've been missing. Your videos are well written, well edited and "enlightens" viewers to something beautiful. Subscribed. I'm putting in a plug for my favorite movie of all time: "Light the Red Lantern". A movie in which every scene, every character, every shot and every word is perfect. Where Western cinema struggles to create complex female characters "Light the Red Lantern" does it right. Also "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is so very good. It''s like an "anti-parody" of traditional Chinese "Kung Fu" movies, which are good when taken into context. Chinese cinema is a "rabbit hole" where once you start watching it you can't stop.

Thank you for your comment! I have been deeply in love with Eastern cinema for a long time. Especially Japanese and South Korean, but in the last few years I've been watching many films from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and they're indeed very inspiring. I also hope more and more people will explore this world, because there are many hidden gems in foreign cinema from the last 30 years.

Chungking Express is my favorite Wong Kar Wai film. It's probably one of my favorite films, period. The fact that it was made like this is heavily inspiring for me.
Superlatives fail in trying to describe the genius of Chungking Express. Such a brilliant, moving, transcendently beautiful movie. Tony Leung and Faye Wong are perfect. The soundtrack is sublime. This is film in the most literal sense. You can practically smell the acetate wafting off of it. First watched it around '98 and if anything it's gotten even better with age.
What a fantastic video, thankyou

Just wanted to say, I'd never heard of Chungking Express or WKW until I stumbled upon your video just now, and this video alone has persuaded me to go see this film when it's showing in a nearby cinema in a months time. I love how you forgo the KZread "video essay" stylings for something closer to a traditional documentary, and your editing skills bring the whole thing together; it's a little piece of art in its own right. I'll definitely be checking out more of your work.
