    No matter how you feel about gun control, it's terrifying that in America, the first response for "What is a politician's main goal?" was "To get re-elected" instead of "To help the constituents".

    selfishness in the purest , to not be loser , failure . pathetic , instead of thinking about society , they think about their position , to be above rest of the people , be within the power , represent it , participate in masquerade . amazing how this delusion can absorb so many potentially great people .

    I'm an Australian. Ask me how I felt when prime minister John Howard banned automatic and semi automatic rifles. Go on! OK. I hated it!. I had to hand in a new Ruger Mini 14 223 semi automatic rifle. And for many years afterwards I hated John Howard. Ask me now how I feel now. Go on. OK. I agree with it 100%. What the hell did I actually need a semi automatic rifle for anyway. Australia is a safer place. I live on a farm and from time to time I need to use a rifle for vermin control. Can I buy a rifle if I want to? Yes. Can I buy a pistol if I want to? Yes. Will I be? No. Guns are for killing not home defence! If you have a bar fight or an argument with a neighbour in Australia, the worst that is likely to happen is a punch to the face. In America it's a death sentence!

If the National Firearms Act, Gun Control Act, Hughes Amendment, Brady Bill, and myriad of state/city legislation is not enough change for you, then it is no surprise you would allude to Australia's confiscation measure and expect to be trusted at all

    Dirk Bogan Oh yeah, the rest of Australia sees QLD as the most conservative state in Australia, and unlike the US who have 50 states, Australia (almost the same land mass as the US), has 6 states and 3 territories. So, when it comes to election time, unfortunately QLD is often the decider state...unfortunately. The problem is that the lifestyle of QLD draws the most annoying of our country men and women to live there (ie. the mega bogans). So unfortunately you have a concentration of neanderthals living there because QLD has the beaches and the sun - which, in a simple person's mind, is the ultimate in lifestyle (and apparently everyone else is jealous). The common reaction to how conservative QLD is, is that the sun fries their brains and they have no idea what is going on. For fuck's sake, they are the only state that has one house of parliament...whaaaat? No need for all those pesky checks and balances, just rush the legislation through so we can all go back to our XXXX and sun tans. It is largely believed by the rest of the country that the only reason Rudd won the 2007 election was because he was a Queenslander, not because of his policies; it was just QLD voting for their own. People in other parts of Australia think Queenslanders are weird and can't figure out what is going on up there. I've even heard some people say that they should be cut free from the rest of Australia, to float off into the Pacific to be their own country...tempting :-)

    It´s not the job of one regular working guy, it´s the responsability of a society, to organize and and to look after itself. If those people fought for a better life standard just like they fight to keep their guns, the country would be different. But i guess it´s easy for lazy people to simply buy an item to "deal" with a problem rather than fixing the problem itself. Btw thanks for the compliment on my age, you made me feel young again.

    Commonwealth96 So stabbings prove gun control doesn't work? I am curious to know how that makes sense... In Australia less guns are used in crime. Restricting gun availability makes guns more difficult and more expensive to get, meaning less guns in criminal's hands. Of course, this will take a while, as the US has decades of stupidity to make up for...

  • @westernalliance796

    @westernalliance796

    Of course, because every American is against any form of gun control. /sarcasm Poll after poll have shown that a majority of Americans are in favor of stricter gun laws. How Americans view other countries in terms of gun laws isn't twisted, your view of Americans is.

  • @ratofvengence

    @ratofvengence

    10 жыл бұрын

    Commonwealth96 Oh dear, that really doesn't work. You made one good point, which I agree with totally; mental health services are vital. Not that I agree with just locking them all up as you suggest. Smuggled guns? Why would a crim bother? According to the Dept Justice stats, over 15 million guns were stolen in the US between 2005 and 2010. That's where the crims get their guns from, the homes of the gun owners! Gun control reduces that supply, as PROVEN here. There are less shootings, less crimes involving guns, and NO shooting massacres. There you go, dots connected.

  • @ratofvengence

    @ratofvengence

    10 жыл бұрын

    Commonwealth96 The decline is because less households have guns. Yeah, getting the guns off the career criminals will be hard, noone said it wouldn't be, but 25% of the homicides in the US are people killing a family member! Nearly 1000 people die to gun accidents, MANY of them children getting to unsecured firearms. Yeah, just ignore the 15 million guns stolen, it destroys your point so lets hope it goes away, right?

Under your argument, the government could ban radio, TV, and the internet because those things didn't exist in 1789 (the year the Constitution was ratified.) They could also ban Mormonism and Baha'i because those religions didn't exist in 1789. What an incredibly stupid argument.

    From what I can tell, gun control is really just A. Making people have to jump through a few more hoops to actually get a firearm. B. Limiting the selection one has on firearms, such as limiting them to a pistol for home defense, or requiring a hunting license to own a hunting rifle or shotgun. Jon Stewart suggested making other types of guns like assault rifles available, but only at shooting ranges. Making mentally-damaged people have to work harder to acquire guns is the point I see from gun control. A child snags cookies from the cookie jar? Hide the jar, or put it somewhere the child can't reach. "But the 2nd amendment--" says you have a right to bear arms. This does not say you're allowed to keep a nuclear stockpile under your house. If a pistol is all you need to defend your home, why do people need assault rifles or semi-automatic weapons and other stuff that's mostly used in the military? And what's the problem with more in-depth background checks? If I owned a gun store, I'd probably want to make absolutely certain the person I'm selling this gun to doesn't have a history of violence or mental instability. "But guns aren't the only way to kill people--" Yes, knives and hammers and all that are also used... But here's the thing: THE ONLY PURPOSE OF A GUN IS TO KILL PEOPLE. If that's the only thing it's meant to do, why shouldn't we work to make sure it's not put in the hands of someone who REALLY SHOULDN'T HAVE IT? Gun control might not be a fool-proof solution, but it's the best one on the table, and Australia has shown that it won't cause a nation to go down in flames.

    Gun control is not a bad idea, just make sure you regulate the right guns. In 2010 There were 11,078 gun-related homocides. 6,009 of those, were handguns Ie pistols. 1,939 were with an unspecified fire-arm(Ie shotguns and other, at least to my understanding, feel free to look this up, and tell me i am wrong). And 358 murders were reported to have happened with fire-arms. Rifles, of course mean, guns such as the always feared ar-15, AK-47, or Remington 700 or other "dangerous black rifles"

Also the Aboriginal discrimination is overly-exaggerated, yes there are those racists, just like in every country, but recently it has died down. About the new election, I'm not very undated as to how our new Prime Minister is. I'm pretty sure I heard he's Labour, which sometimes can be a bad thing. But I heard he's all for legalizing gay marriage, so that's off to a good start. I do hope he's not a racist, misogynistic, and religious-orientated Prime Minister that was Tony Abbott. And I don't want another bad Labourer where they would carelessly raise the unemployment by closing our jobs just to save a few trees. Even though in the Logging business you are required to replant the exact amount you cut down.

The police can be trusted with guns but the general public cant? Mhhm. You sir are a twat. Everytime you take away guns from countries the gun rate lowers, but the overall crime rate rises. It's like how the women of India signed petitions to get guns, because it's not the gun that kills , it's not the metal pole that kills. You think without guns mass murder will stop? Ever heard of homemade bombs? It's fucking easier than going into a mall and shooting up a dozen cunts. I bet you believe everything that the media tells you, you're one of those people. You know, they're going to take away every single gun now just because of ISIS. Does it occur to any of you that ISIS was funded by the US? How much information do you people need to wake up? Australia is a terrible country, I live here and I need to get out. You have police bullying a religious minority, the Australian government breaks their own laws. The funny thing is violent crime overall in Australia has actually risen while violent crime in the US has continued to decline for the last few decades. Disarming law abiding citizens does not reduce crime, it has the complete opposite effect.

  • @TheSecretCobra

    @TheSecretCobra

    fineblanket The reason the US has so many incidents at schools is because ignorant law makers think hanging a sign will stop criminals. Our schools have become convenient targets because the law abiding citizens are legally prohibited from defending themselves. When someone does decide to exploit that vulnerability for whatever reason, the school's protocol is to sit and wait (Shelter in place) until people with guns arrive, this is stupid. Overall violence in Australia is higher, as is violence in the UK, and other countries with extremely restrictive laws that make it illegal to defend yourself. Keep in mind these laws in no way stop criminals, because they break they law. The perpetrators of the Columbine massacre violated not only the then Federal 1994 "Assault Weapons ban", but also the National Firearms Act by manufacturing almost 200 explosives without paying a $200 tax for each one, (The NFA is from 1934). My question is do you actually feel safer without these over-hyped televised incidents even though there is actually more crime and more victims in your country because you are not legally allowed to defend yourselves?

    Jose Santos Anything has the potential to be a weapon. In the case of Australia where Semi-Automatic firearms are almost completely illegal, CRIMINALS do not obey the law. While you could argue that someone with malicious intent could do more harm with a gun than a knife, violent crime has gone up not down, so if the intent at all is to reduce crime, or reduce the amount of victims it has failed miserably. THE FACTS SIMPLY DO NOT SUPPORT BANNING WEAPONS TO REDUCE CRIME. I can't make that point any clearer. I am assuming you are referring to Semi-Automatic weapons (1 Shot per trigger pull) and not Fully-Automatic weapons which even in the US are extremely difficult to acquire legally. To own a Full-Auto firearm in the us takes 12-15 months, a $200 tax, and around $15,000 -$30,000 or more for the weapon itself. Of course if you're a criminal or don't care about the law you can do it in your garage for about $100 in an hour.

    Homicides and violent crime in Australia were already on their way down before the legislation in 1996, and after the legislation was passed, they continued to fall at the same rate. Had the legislation made a difference, the decline would have been far greater. Instead, you have some politicians taking advantage of a massacre in AU and then, rushing to pass laws to make themselves look good, fully knowing that violent crime was falling, in spite of a one-off massacre. They did it to draw a connection between their actions and a better situation, or at least, to lure the voters in with a "post hoc ergo propter hoc" (correlation imply causation) fallacy.

    The rate of gun violence *did continue to drop* gradually after the ban, *just as it had been doing for years* before. The violent crime rate increased tho. Assault 150%, rape 22% and robberies went from sixteen thousand in 1997 to 26 thousand in 2001. Meanwhile the crime rate in the US decreased dramatically. Could this possibly be because bad actors knew people were rendered defenseless and only had the police as protection? Those not around while you're being attacked?

    Here's a thing for people who defend guns to think about: If we have the law of open arms to protect ourselves, why do more gun crimes happen here? It's made to protect, yet, somehow, it only allows easier access to people who want to commit a crime? School shootings happen often. Teens aren't going to get their hands on a gun easily if it's against the law, but if their parents have 5 and they've been out shooting for fun, they know how to use it and have VERY easy access to one! You're not gonna show up at your kids school with you gun and stop the shooter... You're just giving more people a chance to be the shooter. And if you're gonna argue saying "Well, they can just use knives to rob people, are they going to take away my knives too?!". No.. that's not the point. If everyone had access to an instant million dollars, everyone would be rich. I mean, there is no instant million dollars. People can still make a million dollars. But it is much harder to pull off. So yeah there CAN still be crimes committed by using knives, but it's much harder to hold up dozens of people with knives. Therefore, people won't do it as much.

    I guess if one was ignorant of most facts regarding gun rights/politics this might sound perfectly intuitive. But if you actually look at the issue than it's fairly clear that legal gun ownership does not inherently increase gun crime. If you're looking solely at the US this stands true and if you look at the rest of the world it stands true as well. For instance, the US has been experiencing downwards trend in all crime categories, gun crime included, for the past few decades. While this has happened, gun rights across the US are generally more liberal, gun ownership rates are rising and this is with the proliferation of concealed and open carry. Now let's look at the UK, in which in 1994 they enacted a handgun ban. Few years later, what do you know but handgun crime is spiking, along with murder rates. This seems woefully incompatible with your statements here above. Then there's Brazil, Mexico and Thailand. All restrict legal gun ownership pretty heavily and yet have massive amount of gun crime. Lastly, criminals can and do get guns illegally. This is factual. In 2011 in Belgium, there was mass shooting in which the shooter had grenades, again, grenades. Not a shred of a legal chance to own a grenade as a citizen and yet he somehow acquired one. Also even if criminals are by some magical force deterred from getting guns illegally, guns are not just used in defense against other guns. In the hand of a 5 foot tall 85 year old woman, a gun is going to help her far more against an assailant than just her bare hands.

    I can kinda understand why being politically dead is worse in the US than in Australia. Because if you are not reelected your successor will just roll back what you did. The problem is the 2 party system. Maybe they would bother growing a spine if them losing wouldnt doom everything they worked for.

    What I find most interesting is that if you actually examine the crime statistics of Australia, it is clear that gun deaths and homicide rates were already in a steady decline before this legislation was enacted in '96. After the ban was enacted, that steady decline continued at roughly the same trajectory. If someone was to claim that the ban itself was responsible for the decline in homicide rates after it was enacted, they would have to show a marked descent in the overall trajectory of the statistical decline punctuated in the year 1996 when it was enacted. However, this is not the case. You can also see in the statistics that there was already a steady decline in deaths by firearms starting as a trend as far back as 1969, and the legislation of '96 did not accentuate that average rate of decline in any noticeable way. The pattern was already there and well on its way. Now here is the really interesting part. Look up violent crime rates in Australia. You will see a steady increase in violent assault crime since 1996, with a continued upward trajectory at a steep rate. What the statistics are really saying: 1. Gun deaths and homicide rates were already on a steady decline well before and after the gun laws were put into affect, with overall decline rates altering hardly at all with the passing of the legislation. 2. Violent crime rates are on the rise after the passing of this legislation. From these numbers, I can't be certain that this gun legislation can claim all the credit for declining homicide crime statistics... That is simply not true. 1. The trend for homicides was increasing from 1991 to 95 as shown in your first link. It dropped from there, other than a spike in 2001/2 due to a gang war. Our total homicide rate WAS 1.8/100,000 it is now 1.0/100,000. 2. the rising trend of violent crime was established well before gun control. Your link only shows from the time gun control started, you make an incorrect assumption the trend started there also. Gun control also saw a major drop in the number of successful suicides, as the easiest and most foolproof way was removed. RoV

    ratofvengence 1. I am not talking about micro trends, but macro trends in homicide rates. IF you look at the graphs, you will see a steady decline over long periods of time. Look at the bigger picture man... 2. I did not say that the rising trend of violent crime started with gun control. Once again, if you look at the larger trends, that too has been on a steady increase for a long time, however you do see increases in percentage gains after 1996. The point here is both trends were well on their way, and gun control really did not affect either one. But it is definitely not doing anything to halt violence.

    Justin Hammonds Do you actually live here Justin? It isnt dangerous at all. All those 'statistics of crime' that you state to make Australia seem more dangerous without guns does not actually represent how we feel in Australia. It is safe, and i would leave my country if people wanted guns in supermarkets or in my children's school.

    "In 2005 the head of the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn, noted that the level of legal gun ownership in New South Wales increased in recent years, and that the 1996 legislation had had little to no effect on violence. Professor Simon Chapman, former co-convenor of the Coalition for Gun Control, complained that his words *"will henceforth be cited by every gun-lusting lobby group throughout the world in their perverse efforts to stall reforms that could save thousands of lives"*.[39] Weatherburn responded, *"The fact is that the introduction of those laws did not result in any acceleration of the downward trend in gun homicide. They may have reduced the risk of mass shootings but we cannot be sure because no one has done the rigorous statistical work required to verify this possibility. It is always unpleasant to acknowledge facts that are inconsistent with your own point of view. But I thought that was what distinguished science from popular prejudice."* "

    You might need to explain why total gun deaths in Australia dropped from over 500/yr to less than 200/yr, even though our population increased by 26%. You will also then need to explain why the total homicide rate dropped by nearly half.

  • @dtroy15

    @dtroy15

    ratofvengence And I'll explain it the way Mr. Weatherburn explained it: There were a number of other factors. The homicide rate in the United States has also dropped by more than 50% since 1980. Meanwhile, burglary rates in Australia climbed as they continued to fall in the US. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Burglaries_per_1,000_pop.svg consider this: Alcohol abuse kills more people every year (in the US) than guns, and recreational alcohol use serves no practical purpose. How many people are killed in the US by all rifles combined? (including "assault" rifles)... Drumroll please.... 323. (in 2011) Whereas "hands, fists, and feet" killed over 700 people. Furthermore, people (children especially) are more likely to be murdered in their own homes than in public, suggesting that we should address societal issues to prevent mass shooters before a ban on "assault" rifles. seriously, falling out of bed kills more people every year than assault rifles. Roughly the same number of people die in texting while driving incidents as firearms homicides.
