Dummy: Mexico has far more gun homicides than the USA but LEGAL gun ownership is strictly limited. Guns are illegal in Brazil where they have among the highest gun homicide rate in the world. Switzerland has an extremely high gun ownership rate and very low gun crime statistics. If you remove the gun crime in major cities like Chicago, Detroit, Camden, Newark, Philly, Oakland, Baltimore, Saint Louis our gun homicide rates are on par with most Western European countries. Not that you'll actually research this....

Popular vote is not fair to people who are not urban, or are not part of the (even slight) majority. Nor is it fair to small states. Which is why we don't have a popular vote. the views of small states and non-urban areas matter in an electoral system. Unless every state had an equal population, and there was an equal split of all demographics, (urban, rural, etc) a popular vote wouldn't be fair. Someone living in a high rise, or in a suburban area, for instance, probably won't care too much about whether pipelines and trains can just take people's land for their own. Because it won't affect them in any way.

It's called a 'voice vote' and congressional committees use it for the sake of efficiency---and because it's relatively anonymous. Your colleagues might know how you voted but your constituents are far less likely to find out. But if 1/5 of the committee disagrees with the chair's call, they will conduct a recorded roll call vote and get the exact number of ayes and nos. I assume that must have happened for at least some of these examples.

I mean, this call up your congressman stuff?? That couldn't have existed when the country was formed. It had to have evolved as part of phones becoming something that most people have. But what did the government do before then to factor in public opinion? Nothing? Is the government even factoring in public opinion in the first place, or is that part just a modern illusion to make us feel like we can do something about it? And if our opinion is supposed to factor in, why don't they set up an SMS service, where we can just have upcoming bill info sent to us and then we text how we feel about it, and it's stored in a computer? I mean, how has no one proposed such a thing in a serious manner if public opinion is supposed to matter?

I live in a country that has very strict gun laws (You need to pass a background check to legally obtain a gun and show that there is a necessity for you to own one, i.e. because you're a hunter, as well as undergo training to obtain a licence to purchase firearms) and I don't think that that calliber of gun laws will ever pass in the US, due to cultural differences. However, you'd think that it would be common sense that people have to have a clean criminal record and undergo some basic gun safety training before being allowed to own one. Nothing too restrictive, just the equivalent of a driver's license for guns. Will it completely stop gun violence? Of course not, since the amount of violent crime in the US goes deeper than every idiot being allowed to purchase a gun. But it would, at the very least, reduce it.

dog guy flawed argument. yes the terror watchlist is a bullshit. I remember reading about a three year old banned from a flight because he shared the same name as a terrorist. but then we have a valid to actually fix how the watchlist is implemented instead of this half-assed thing we've got now. remember the watch list isn't set in stone. if we can require background checks and watchlist crossover, then we can fix the watchlist as well.

As an outsider looking in, (I'm from Scotland), I just can't get over the power the NRA have over the government. It amazes me that in this day and age we still hear about mass shooting sprees and the fact nothing gets done about it. We had the Dunblane Primary School shooting in 1996 and that was enough to lead to change. Common sense prevailed and we haven't had small children slaughtered by a piece of shit with a gun since then. We have terrorists bombing us and trying to tear our nation apart, but we don't have mass shootings - enough is enough, surely the people can see the need for gun control?

John Undefined, that's a good observation. It takes time to bring in that many weapons and nobody would bring that many to a hotel room for no reason other than to do what he did. Your idea that it could have been engineered to get people to support gun control sounds extremely ironic. As if some guy thought "the best way to prevent mass shootings is to commit mass shooting", it's just ridiculous.

Couple of things - The 2nd amendment was created in 1791, 150 years before Hitler. It had nothing to do with anything he did. If you have evidence to the contrary, please show it, but I could find nothing linking the 2nd Amendment in any way to Hitler's actions. It was created so that the people of the US could defend themselves against the government, but it's based on a world that looked much different than ours does today. Imagine creating a law today that is expected to manage weapons created 230 years from now. It's ludicrous. Even so, I (and most other people pushing for reasonable gun laws) are not attempting to destroy the 2nd Amendment. We simply want to make it more difficult for untrained 19 year olds with mental health issues and well known racist behavior to obtain assault rifles.

Events: 58 killed - October 1, 2017 - In Las Vegas, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, sprays gunfire on a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, killing 58 people and injuring almost 500. Witnesses say the gunshots last between 10 and 15 minutes. Officers breach Paddock's hotel room to find him dead. Authorities believe Paddock killed himself and that he acted alone. 49 killed - June 12, 2016 - Omar Saddiqui Mateen, 29, opens fire inside Pulse, a gay nightclub, in Orlando. At least 49 people are killed and more than 50 are injured. Police shoot and kill Mateen during an operation to free hostages officials say he was holding at the club. 32 killed - April 16, 2007 - Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. A gunman, 23-year-old student Seung-Hui Cho, goes on a shooting spree killing 32 people in two locations and wounding an undetermined number of others on campus. The shooter then commits suicide. 27 killed - December 14, 2012 - Sandy Hook Elementary School - Newtown, Connecticut. Adam Lanza, 20, guns down 20 children, ages six and seven, and six adults, school staff and faculty, before turning the gun on himself. Investigating police later find Nancy Lanza, Adam's mother, dead from a gunshot wound. Only a few from a shockingly large list i found online

Look, we just want tighter laws to cut back on shootings. Yes, in the right hands, guns save lives. I am not denying that. However, if the gun shops slip up, that could end up in another shooting. I want to see this country keep succeeding, but the NRA is holding us back due to laws they put in order. Of course the NRA can keep existing, but it needs to have some power taken away. If numbers continue on trend (284 mass shootings in 191 days, average of 1.48 shootings a day), we will surpass 500 mass shootings by the end of the year. I am a member of the NRA yet this sickens me. bear in mind i am only a member cause I enjoy shooting guns as a sport and i have to be a member to exercise that sport at my local gun range. if it really comes down to it, if the only way to keep the world safe is to give up my guns i will. Gun violence is a serious issue that NEEDS to be investigated in full and if you are an NRA member who opposes that notion then you are a fool plain and simple. its not just cause there is a fully justifiable reason to study thus issue, its also because if you oppose this you WILL get run over by the bus of social change at some point. the difference is is that when that bus comes through (and it WILL come through) the difference between people being able to keep their guns and everyone loosing that privilege rests on the shoulders of what you do now. will you be responsible with that privilege or not? if you really do think guns are a RIGHT then fuck you and the horse you rode in on. it is, and always has been, a privilege.

@@Nippleless_Cage Throughout history, the right to keep and bear arms (which were typically swords before firearms) was reserved only for the nobility. The founders of the United States had a different vision, one where there was no nobility, where all men are created equal, where we the people have the means to alter or abolish the government should it become destructive to our unalienable rights. The founders themselves didn't live up to their own standards, but that doesn't mean they aren't good ones.

@@Nanofuture87 The founders probably didn't envision a country where people exercising the right to bear arms break into a school and shoot a bunch of innocent children, though. Or into a club and shoot up a crowd of innocent people. And if reality is so fundamentally different to their vision, maybe, just maybe, the laws that enable that reality should be changed.

Conservative principles in a nutshell: Ownership of guns is a constitutional right. Health insurance for victims of that right is a privilege.

Because you aren't entitled to own either, but you have the right to own both. Anyone should be able to get health insurance if they can afford it, anyone should be able to buy a gun if they can afford it.

willdoesthings why are you putting the two on the same playing field? Healthcare should be a right, not the ability to obtain it. If we have a difference in opinion on that fact, there's no reconciling our disagreements.

I would rather him talk about issues that need to be talked about and make money than to talk about garbage issues and still make money.

I’m a liberal! I support gun ownership but I have a questions? Why are people so opposed to regulations and tighter rules regarding ownership? Background checks, limits of magazine sizes and banning people who have or are suspected of committing a violent crime. Or allowing the CDC to study gun violence? What’s wrong with that?
