    i cannot believe how strong he is as an interviewer. He's vastly underrated He doesn't allow evasiveness or the usual tricks that government employees generally use. He really needs to get more credit for these skills- to the extent that i think he should actually have an interview segment from now on. I've been kinda thinking that before; but this video convinced me.

    there is this segment about gun control, where he both interviews a poltician who is agaons it and goes to Australia, where they have it since 1996. He did it for the Daily Show with Jon Stuart. It's actually amazing, although old. Comedy central posted it on their youtube channel, i think

    The Joker Old post, I know. But if you're trying to collect information on what terrorists are saying using a specific method, you are actively using that information to frustrate terrorist actions. With information like this leaked, terrorists could use alternative methods of communications and generally avoid information leaks. That means it's easier to organize successful attacks. Vague, I know. But I don't work in the NSA, so I don't know of any specific examples. I just know that I like the idea of religious, idiotic killings being prevented.

    As a non-US citizen, what upsets me about these conversations is the presumption that it is okay to eavesdrop on people's communications and collect data on the rest of the world, but not the US, and that's FINE. No, it isn't. If my government had such a power over the American people, they would lose their shit. This self-appointed role as the arbiter of moral values is simply unfounded and ill-deserved. No terrorist has yet killed as many people as the US has in just the first few days of each of their wars. Yes, terror is despicable and deplorable, but so is what the US does every single day in the name money and power

    It's kind of the point of a nations "spies" to spy on foreign nations, groups and people. Just like it's the military's job to fight enemies of your nation. An example would be deploying the military to replace police. The police should fight crime and internal disorder.

  • @shooflymedia1356

    @shooflymedia1356

    8 жыл бұрын

    ***** Again, you say that like it's all fine. That's "the point" of spies. What gives them the right? And your point about the job of the military isn't right either. The job of a military is to defend a nation. The US military actively engages in wars on foreign soil for completely transparent, self-motivated reasons

  • @Viktor16161616

    @Viktor16161616

    8 жыл бұрын

    I was not commenting on the US military but military forces in general concept. As for spies and what gives them the rights? The governments they work for. Do you understand why? It's to atempt to give the government early warning in the event someone is planing an attack or declaration of war in the worst case. Or in the case of war being the curent state of things, to give the military a tactical advantage in defeating the enemy. And that's just a bare minimum of what they are suppose to do. If not for spies the allies could very well have lost WW2, or at the very least failed operation overlord. Do you somehow live with the belief that war is not something that can still very much happen? When we no longer need armies, should that day ever come, we will still need spies.

  • @WellConditioned

    @WellConditioned

    " If not for spies the allies could very well have lost WW2" I must respectfully disagree with you on that point. Turing's breaking Germany's code guaranteed the loss, along with Hitler's massive blunder of a two-front war, neither of which could be interpreted as spying.

    ***** Oh yeah, no I totally agree with the fact that the majority of people are too lazy to investigate how how pretty much any of the government works/spends money. What I was talking about was the assumption that they did do some sort of surveilence, in order to keep law abiding citizens safe. I myself am happy to give them that power, as clearly some privacies must be lost in order to give the government, or a governmental agency, the necessary power to keep us safe. Perhaps many catasrphes in the country could have been avioded if certain calls were intercepted.

Gosh, how dangerous can he be if he doesn't even know what Pinterest is? He's definitely a sharp one & very sly; he'd have to be to run the NSA. If there was even the slightest chance that Oliver would get the better of him, he wouldn't have done the interview. He's so slippery in fact, that the tone of the interview is entirely controlled by him, so that the punchline/warning has to be added post-interview: "Don't worry, your vote /will/ be collected." I'd bet you any amount of money in any currency that the questions John Oliver asked were at the very least approved beforehand, if not straight-out decided for him (most likely a back-and-forth between parties). This is less an interview than an unrehearsed read-through of a carefully crafted dialogue.

    Good point, well they obv have guidelines and rules they have to follow but I think as you say some people will judge based on their own believes. I honestly have no idea where I stand on this, I feel like it could be better but I dont think it can ever be perfect. Some sort of online-security is needed, obviously, so lets just hope something that preserves our privacy a bit more pops up.

    The NSA is kind of like a Grunt from Halo, they rely on their breathing apparatus to survive. The courts being that apparatus, but its more like an inhaler. Every once in awhile the grunt takes a breath of the court's permission to invade privacy, then they go on with whatever they please.

    The court's job is to balance their power. The NSA can ask for whatever it feels is necessary, and the court can deny whatever it feels is necessary. If it was up to the NSA to say no to themselves... it wouldn't really work would it?

    anishannayya1 They are are collecting billions of data so that when say out of billion only 100 people (don't know who, don't know when) plan to bomb, shoot etc. they can have "some" proof? To me it seems like a waste of money, time, people, storage space etc. And before this began cops could still find connections between criminals most of the times. So I don't see how this helps.

    Well we can't predict whose going to become a terrorist or murderer so by collecting everyone's data, they can create profiles for people who are engaging in questionable behavior. For instance, a kid who has been watching Isis videos online, attending meetings associated with known criminals, buying guns with his credit card, and searching for terms like "how to make a bomb" will be a red flag and the government will start to watch him. It's actually a very smart idea since there is no other way to catch a terrorist or killer before they commit a crime except for watching what they purchase and search for online. That's how they caught those two women in Brooklyn who were planning an attack. They found two bombs in their house and caught them because they were searching how to make bombs on the internet and also purchased some materials that signaled a red flag. However the issue is that it can be abused and used for non-national security issues. Like for instance, blackmailing people or making it hard for them to ind employment, etc. it's very difficult to know if this is good or bad. It has equal pros and cons.

You may only invade privacy some of the time or some of the way, but it's still an invasion of privacy. That's not a balance. that is one side getting some or all of what it wants and the other not getting what it wants. Or let's put it another way. I want to set you on fire, you don't want to be set on fire, so we strike a balance and I only set half of your body on fire. I got what I want to some degree, you didn't get what you wanted, you just got burned.
