I love how horses can be so classy like this and then start rolling in the dirt in their pasture.

The horse's movements were in perfect time with the music which is just so cool, the choreography was well done, cute and fun. That horse didn't have her ears back at all and I can tell that she thoroughly enjoyed working for her master. Horses are big enough to rebel but a relationship with their human will make them supple enough to do anything asked. If she didn't enjoy it, you would be able to tell.

I was just watching the freestyle at the 2021 Olympics and I had to come revisit this video and saw your comment. I was noticing that some of the riders, like Charlotte Dujardin, would drop the reins completely at the end of their test, as Hans did here. That's a trustworthy horse!

Never have I see a better combination of horse, rider and music. Horse and rider are obviously enjoying themselves during a class most consider rather daunting. Playful music matches this horse so well and the execution is flawless, piaffes are straight and shaped properly with no creeping. Extended canter to pirouette in less than half the length of the arena is an incredible act of control. Wow, wow....wow.

aj gensel - You could not be more right! Everything was fantastic but the thing I really loved was her tail. She was enjoying the whole thing...immensely. To get that kind of control and still have the horse loving it is amazing.

I spent a good portion of my time specializing with ponies because I love their expression and attitude. Ponies either love their job or hate it and they will let you know! I've also found that "pony" is more a state of mind than size, I knew a 17hh Hanoverian pony, he hated dressage but loved him his hunter/jumper world. His owner had given up on him because he wouldn't stay in a dressage arena and he and I got along so well because I got him, I knew he was a pony in disguise and was willing to cater to that. Love this little pony, they obviously love this, he/she is having so much fun and it's just a joy to watch. Makes me smile every time I watch it.

aj gensel - I just watched it again...simply for the pleasure of watching her. (I'm thinking of her as a mare because "Nadine" is a female name.) I don't have your experience with ponies. I had a lovely little Welsh when I was a child and I adored him so much that I kept him until he died. I did have a Morgan with what you seem to be describing...a passion for finding the fun in life. I even "caught" him taking the jumps, just for the helluvit, when I put him in the training ring while I mucked out his stall. Sadly, this was in the days before personal camcorders.

Yep, I never noticed her name, but Nadine certainly is female, lol never paid any attention to anything but the horse and rider. The one horse I actually owned was a Morgan cross with the same love of jumping, he used to try to subtly leg yield over to a line a fences like he thought I wouldn't notice after I had retired him and like you I kept him just shy of 13 years when I was forced to put him down. He was the one that started me working with ponies for others, people just didn't seem to get they were more than a transitional mount. Our family had a camcorder, though it was huge, but they never cared enough to come to the farm much less film me ride so all I have are photos of him, but so many good memories like him biting an apple in half in my fathers pocket or his fascination with licking anything smooth, his amusing way of giving anyone who boarded him some comeuppence by letting them know if they forgot to latch a door or gate, he never went anywhere, he'd be standing just the other side of it and wait to be caught. Such characters aren't they?

aj gensel - Yes, Morgans really are characters. I love the story about the apple. It could have gone very bad...depending on the pocket. LOL My family definitely considered ponies "for kids" but I've always had a sneaking desire to have a real Victorian pony cart replica and the ponies to go with it. Since I've gotten older, driving is more attractive than riding and I can't help but think that an hour in the open air every day, would do me a world of good. Not to mention all the parade and event opportunities.

I don't know why everyone is hating on the dressage thing so much. Sure, those bits and spurs can be nasty, but the rider was sitting very still, didn't disturb the horse more than necessary, he gave it a pat on the neck when it did a fantastic job (at 2:23 ) which shows that the relationship with the horse means more to him than the points of the judges. And what a great horse that is! It obviously wasn't nervous or anything, notice how it's not flicking it's tail side to side anymore than every horse would? Now watch some other riders perform and you'll see horses that look so tense - there's no sign of that here.

@@nebulabunny8633 you are right that spurs, a heavy bit can ve bad. I personally never use them, however if used corectly by realy good riders who know their horse really well ans have a good bond its not harmfull. The horses mouth isnt pulled open in this video, he is foaming a little bit but not excessively so its not bad (there are a lot of informational videos about this). After the ride you van see that the horse is relaxed. I know the channel you mention and I agree that a lot of the things in dressage can be bad for the horse or even abusive but that is not necessarily how it has to be. When you start dressage you always want to the horse to work for you from relaxation not stress or fear or pain, it stays that way even in higher levels

Nadine is MAGNIFICENT!!!! How incredibly precious is she??? It's rare to see such perfect cadence with the beat of the music in the extended trot/canter, but she's a master. What a beauty. I'm glad she's retired, though. She's done her job. Bravo!

Nebula Bunny lol. I know this was a couple months ago, but I'm dying of laughter! Can you really not read a horse at all?? And Think Like A Horse is a complete and utter idiot. They are required to ride in a double bridle at this high level of dressage, and the horse is very obviously not in pain. He is fairly relaxed, has wonderful collection and awesome suspension, and you can tell he had a great work ethic. His neck is a little too short and tight for my liking, but that is not rolkur. This horse is a hardworking althlete, not a delicate little butterfly. So keep your mis-informed, biased opinion to yourself. Instead of ridiculous channels like Think Like A Horse and RaleighLink14, watch Shelby Dennis and channels like hers. Shelby is the most well researched, calm, reasonable youtuber in the world. She cites her sources in her videos and explains things how they are.

I started out in the gaited world & was too young to understand all the abuse that goes on, especially at upper performance levels. Tail sets, soring - wrapping the lower leg in a caustic solution to promote that horrible & unnatural "Big Lick" gait. It's disgusting. Gaited horses should be judged on their natural gaits, unfortunately flat-shod is not as exciting to the spectators who have no idea the intense pain these horses are enduring to put on such a flashy show. Nebula Bunny's comment about "foaming" had me chuckling. Saliva shows the horses mouth is well lubricated & he's accepting the bit. If you are going to rant about horse cruelty find some with some merit.

I do not believe you are correct. Some horses enjoy this and her movements were very natural. You can tell if a horse does not enjoy dressage or not and this horse clearly does. Besides, if you think this is abuse, then why suport it by watching it?

Boo11Bear You don't form an accurate opinion just by watching. If you think all forms of dressage are abuse and unnatural you clearly know nothing of the sport. Yes, dressage modifies and heightens some movements that the horse performs, just as dancing does in humans. It is all based on natural functions and abilities, and when done right posesabsolutely NO risk of discomfort to the horse. I will agree that quite a few riders don't know how to do it right, and the animals suffer from it, but your attitude is in no way helping the situation either.

What is amazing is how the horse has its ears forward and its tail is relaxed, it is truly enjoying this!! Hans Peter Minderhoud always gets the best out of the horses he rides!! Equis Nadine enjoys dressage, and this makes this test a joy to watch.

I always love to watch when a human and a horse can come together to create such a beautiful piece of poetry! This is an amazing routine and that horse LOVES what it is doing. The tail swish shows a happy horse. The fact that the ears are forward the entire time and have a bounce of their own to the music also shows the horses love for the dance! This horse is well taken care for and loves dressage! Bravo to Hans Peter Minderhoud & Equis Nadine! Absolutely beautiful!

Boo11Bear the ears of the horse were up and forward, tail relaxed, the horse was frothing and the position of the neck was comfortable. Most of the positions were natural. Dressage improves that natural movements. If you see a horse in its natural state, you would probably see it doing these kind of movements and positions. The horse was relaxed and was enjoying it.

And that right there, ladies and gentlemen, is why they call dressage "horses dancing!" Perfect music, a gorgeous and talented horse, and a highly skilled rider. Poetry in motion.

One of the best rides with regard to actually matching the right music and tempo to the horse I have ever seen. No speeding up during extensions or slowing during piaffe. Truly a joy to watch. This is what freestyle is supposed to look like. Thanks for posting.

Big Nebby Neb Wowwww copy and paste... so professional. And btw that horse is completely relaxed, if he wasn’t he wouldn’t be moving so smoothly and forward. As someone who has a horse who has issue with being tense I know first hand that this is NOT a tense. The horse also just has a short neck that’s not rulker because you can see his neck is relaxed as well. The rider has steady hands that don’t bump on the reins and the horse seems to be enjoying him or herself. And think like and horse doesn’t really have much science behind his opinions, that’s why they are called opinions. Your turn to try to prove me wrong

@@majorfabio6720 I think copy paste is a good option since so many people are wrong here. Those competitions are cruel and you can tell that the bit is hurting the horses mouth. Normally, horses don't have their mouth open. It's tail doesn't stop flicking once, you can see that the horse is nervous. And sure tHe riDeR gAvE iT A PeT bEcAuSe hE loVeS hiS hOrsE but so do jockeys after a race and destroying their horses legs.

Hans is an amazing rider by all means, but the horse is just a hair hyperflexed. I still love the video and song! It is my favorite song choice. Other than that minor flaw this was an amazing ride and I love it!

That was beautiful!!! They were so in tune with eachother the whole time. The change in the canter paces were amazing!!! I love when they do the multiple lead changes. Beautiful!!!

I know this is late, but why would the horse be happy if it had a metal bit in its mouth and forced to go into unnatural positions with loud music and people screaming in its ears. Also the tail slashing from side to side is a sign that the horse isn't comfortable.

Cloudia Plays umm honey, I think you need more knowledge of horses. Bits do NOT hurt them and I can see the bit in that horses mouth, it’s not harsh. Second, unnatural positions?! Child, all eight of my horses necks are like that. It’s common and they are trained to do that. Third, it doesn’t give a shit that music and people aware screaming. If it did she would be spooking. Lastly,swishing a tail is a sign of enjoyment and pleasure. Just look at the ears. Based on what you just commented, I don’t even think you know what a horse is. K I’m done here Bye

Claire Clearman YOU NEED KNOWLEDGE. See that head? It is behind the 90 degrees line, first sign of rollkur, plus, no horse neck is like that, horse heads NEVER get behind the line naturally, as it HURTS THEIR NECK VERTEBRAE, CARTILAGE AND MUSCLES, you will absolutely never see a horse doing that, plus the open mouth Is another sign, foaming is too. That bit is DAMN HARSH, why may you say? It is long, longer means it Is stronger, stronger means more pain, and HELL I WOULS NOT LIKE TO BE THAT HORSE. Another sign of rollkur are unparallel legs, this is not "trained". Plus you can see the woman leaning back slightly. The tail swishing is not relaxed, it indicates irritation and pain. Get informed, dear, go see Think Like a Horse channel, please.

I know I will get some rude comments from this but,......This horse did a wonderful job. However, this horse according to classical dressage is not getting under himself. Lateral work makes this clear. His diagonal hind leg is not in tune with the diagonal front leg. His back end is left behind to catch up with the front. Its very slight but its there if you watch. In the canter he is not using his hind end to propel himself. He is to much on the forehand and he is cranked unnaturally at the 3rd vertebra instead of the poll. I'm not saying this was a bad ride. I'm just pointing out some flaws. Disagree if you must. There will always be someone.

Agreed! I noticed the same thing thing in the extended trot, lots of fore leg action while the back legs just dragged behind. If you want to see a really good dressage test, look up Charlotte Dujardin, and notice the difference, notably the relaxed tails of Charlotte's horses. This one continually swishes his tail, probably because the rider is jabbing him in the side with his spurs at every stride!

The rider is not jabbing the horse every stride. Yes I agree a lot of horses continually swish their tail bc they're uncomfortable, but some of them do just swish their tails. This horse doesn't look too uncomfortable. Some horses like Blue Hors Matine you could see it in her eyes that she wasn't really enjoying it

I think shes concentrated and a little bit under pressure for doing a giod job, by hereself and of course she feels the tension ofthe rider. She looks to me as if she enjoys most of it.

Yes. Thats the thing, from a Classical POV, most competitive dressage is like this. Totilas was loved world round for his flashy steps. But that flash came at the cost of good training. Even Valegro is not perfect, he didn't have the poll as the highest point. Go back to classical training for a while, and then we'll see happy horses in the rings again.

I can't believe I've never seen this pair before!! Thank you to whoever filmed this and uploaded it. They are adorable (and so happy) together! This mare reminds me of Blue Hors Matine, in her gorgeous movement and expression and just giving it her all. Just lovely.

Jeannie McCap not Rollkurred, but still way to far BTV. The poll should be the highest point, it isn't. The hindquaters aren't engaging in the extened trot. Better but not good.

The thing about horses, is that when they are in pain, they will show it. If they are upset, there will be head-tossing, rearing, bucking, whatever. I don't see a problem with dressage.

Jalyn Watson no, the thing is that when horses are in pain they will try to avoid it by submission, this horse has the head threw all the way back, foaming and opening it's mouth, they learn that by bucking and such it will only be worse and will also be punished, if someone told that to you, they know nothing, those words are spread by people who compete in these events and go by the easy, suffering way in order to skip steps. It also; hurts the horse's teeth, gums, tongue, mandible, lips, neck bones, neck tissue, back tissue, it stresses the horse and also makes ir be nervous and anxious besides from the fear they have. Rollkur is unacceptable and it generally uses long, painful and harsh bits.

Super cute and talented! The body movements of the horse really portray the emotions of the music!

I have a mare and a paint pony who swish their tail when they are relaxed in their back.

usually the top dressage riders have musicians make their freestyle arrangements especially for them - so I gather - it's unlikely that you'd be able to get this music anywhere ...

Ah. That's what I was thinking and figured. I could recognize some of the songs, but it did sound like a musician or artists had premixed the track for this particular dressage event. Well to whoever mixed the track, it was brillantly done. thanks for the info though. :)

some of you seriously need to research and ride Dressage if you havent so your tiny minds can understand what is happening here. that horse is great and so is the rider. Dressage IS BASED on the horses natural movements (stallions specifically)...Go to the Vienna School of Dressage and learn a thing or two. IMO all equestrians should begin with Dressage to ride better

we all have our own preferences on what you should start out with to ride, It's really a matter of what you plan on doing with horses. I started out with hunter and I find it helps get you started with great eq for jumping buy for people who aren't jumping I agree dressage would be a good start

Pernie Sweemmer actually, they are right... and of the current equine disciplines dressage is, one of, if not the oldest and is the least harsh on the horses health. I mean there are horses in dressage now that would be a decade past retirement age for pretty much any other discipline. It is even common for injured ex-showhorses to participate in lower levels of dressage movements to help strengthen and renew flexibility. While there are still improvements to be made, dressage is still moving faster than most western disciplines in becoming more humane to the horse.

YES! I completely agree. You have to learn how a horse moves and how to communicate with the horse if you want to truly know how to ride.

I can totally see why people would think this is horse abuse. This was a quite nice ride, the rider seemed to use less pressure than other people often do in this sport. Still, the bits they use are way to harsh, even if you use them carefully. It's not necessary to use a bit that big, if it's possible to ride like that with no bit at all. It's quite common for Dressage riders to put more pressure on the bit the "better" they get. But it should be the opposite. The better the rider is, the less tools and pressure he needs to ride good. Many people do not strive to even last five minutes in the competition world, because some people do horrendous things to their horses, just to win a ribbon. If you only ride to win competitions, than you should probably play tennis, or do some other sport where no animals are harmed for the pleasure of people.

I love this! The horse looks so relaxed and you can tell its having fun! Its movement matches perfectly with the music!

Aren't horses just amazing, that they do these kinds of things? I'm blown away every time.

I typically don't like seeing a lot of these types of events simply due to varying forms of mistreatment that often find their way in (and this could be said of any sport!). However... it must be said that this horse moved like butter and transitioned flawlessly! It was great to see that it got a little "break" about halfway into the song, as well. I'm sure it took a ton of training to get it correct!

Everyone's hating on the horses head position but I'm just going to put my statement out there that my horse naturally carries her head like that. With or without a bit she has it high and tucks it automatically. She was raced and then was a brood mare so this wasn't from training either. This horse looked a lot more comfortable than most and the rider did not seem to be pulling as much as many I have seen who ride dressage.

Mango & Mish Exactly! Compared to an abused horse, example Totilas, the neck was in a very natural position. In fact, a hunter/ lesson quarter horse at my barn (the horse as my profile photo) that has not once done dressage, does that a lot.

Kittys.equii_clips she was BTV. Watch the extened trot. She should have been given more rein and encouraged to reach up and under with the hind legs. Instead move movment upfront, and the hindquaters weren't engaged. If a horse dips BTV on their own, ok, but look at the reins. She is being held at that spot. You cant tell from this angel , but she probably has a bit of a "hollow back" from not rounding.

Okay when I look at the comments I see two sides I agree with. Yes dressage is good. Yes, that bit is massive, however, being used correctly. Yes, the horses neck was at a position which could obstruct breathing. Yes, spurs were being used correctly. And yes, I'd say the horse was doing something it was use to, and something it was good at. No, I do not condone this ridding.

It’s actually more comfortable for a horse to have that head set while being ridden as the horse becomes round over its back and can support rider better.

Lucie Wodskou in self carriage or when ATV, yes. BTV can mess a horse up. The easiest way to tell if a horse is ATV or BTV is to look at the poll, it should be the hightest point. The highest point on this horse is the middle of the neck, he is overbent and BTV.

Boo11Bear Actually, the horse was enjoying it; Ears perked forward, tail was calm and relaxed, and rider was gentle and didn't yank on the reins. When horses are in pain, they will show it. If this horse was in pain, it would have bucked and thrown its head. The rider is good to this horse and in return the horse is good to the rider. Just my two cents.

T.F. Schroeder Totillas is in Grand Prix.. his previous owner used rollkur on him, and the rest of his mounts. It happens behind closed doors but there are pictures of people doing it in GP warm ups post the ban.

xxcolourmecrazyxx maybe so, but not every rider does this. Now that we know more about how hyperflexion affects horses, and now that it's illegal, it happens less often because it doesn't truly teach collection to a horse-it just teaches a headset. This horse looks very relaxed, as oxMalenga said. Most dressage riders are trying to get their horse to be supple, light, and willing to work, and rollkur just doesn't achieve that.

xxcolourmecrazyxx every horse? I ride dressage. My horse rests nicely on the bit in a lower, relaxed frame. No horse where I ride is over bent or tense through the neck. What discipline of riding are you interested in? Do you over bend your horse? Also, some of these horses have very large, muscular necks, which can give the impression of being over bent.

I have watched this about 20 times since I first found it! Thank you so much for posting it. Your camera work is just fine! That extended trot! I get goosebumps! Truly a great example of the unity between horse and human that can exist. I even love the moment when she says, "Huh--whoops--what did you want? I thought it was time to canter?"

So wonderful, brought tears to my eyes ❤❤❤

Oh really??? maybe the average teenager equestrian tries - I wrote TRIES - not to hurt the horse he owns / rides. Do you have any idea how many horses end up at the slaughterhouse because of not fitting saddle, low riding skills, poor posture of the rider (yes, if they put a bit more body weight to one side of the horse back the result are spine problems of the horse) ... and so forth. I did not mentioned the 'training" methods which would be illegal if done on human athletes.... at least in Europe and North America.... Looks nice though - during competition.... as long as you don't know what hyperflexion does to the horse... and how the horse was trained to perform as showed in competition...

+Josey Green Do you drool or foam at the mouth when you are thinking?? I thought not. Neither do horses. They don't lick and chew when they are thinking either. Excessive drooling is either pain or an attempt to calm down after stress (just like in people. Ever had the sh*t scared out of you? You'll find your mouth goes dry)

+Josey Green The foam in the mouth can be from the relacations....but not every time. A too hard hand or when the horse is too deep or just can't breath right because it's to short, it can't swallow the saliva. Then it coms out of the mouth as foam. So not every horse which shows foam is relaxed. In this video we see a horse, which isn't active with his hindleg (watch the piaffe), which shows pain or a lot of other things through his tail. Also we don't see much activity in the croup. So in this performance is a lot not okay, but this is normal in this leage and this is really sad. We don't see a right piaffe or passage, it's just something the horse learned to do with his legs

Valerie Wolf Valegro is a gelding and both Hester & Dujarrdin are known advocates & practitioners of LDR. Allegedly LDR isn’t as harmful as rolkur, however similar issues are visible to the practiced eye. A horse that seems to curl under during collected movements, especially in piaffe. You can clearly see Valegro attempting to gape against the bit during the Rio Olympics in slow motion footage, but he’s unable to evade excessive pressure because the noseband is too tight.

She actually looked very relaxed. If you notice her ears flop as she does some movements, I wouldn't pay much mind to the tail... I have never seen a grand prix dressage horse that doesn't have a lot of tail movement haha

It's a matter of the horse and their behavior. I used to ride a thoroughbred that would do that no matter what. Majority of the time, she was swatting flies off her hind-quarters.

i am talking about Valegro' tail, in my reply to another comment. he bends just before the poll, its not ideal but he is not overbent.

Simply superb and wonderful to see that both horse and rider in this combination are relaxed and enjoying the routine. As a Dressage Announcer for many years here in Australia I would have loved to have been the announcer at this event.

what a great horse and rider relationship... the pat on the neck after the extended trot verifies what was already evident with the musical choices ... very sweet... and a talented team :)

This horse can't be trained the right way, hyperflexion I guess. It may be true that it's forhand works great and that's what makes all the selfmade experts out there scream "ohhh cute" but his hindlegs are pretty weak and the head is hold unnatural. As a consequence of wrong training, again I quess hyperflexion, the horse doesn't put weight on his hindquarters.

Nebula Bunny oh, ok. Rollkur is what your saying. Yes, i agree this horse was probably trained with Hyperflexion. I say probably because i don't know this horse and have not heard of this combo before this video. So we agree, Hyperflexion was the most likely training method, i think?

I don't see anything "cute" about how tightly tucked and behind vertical that horse's head is. He's stiff as a board through neck and throat latch. Ugly.

Not since Blue Hors Matine's lovely performance have I watched such a stunning free-style. Mr. Minderhoud's hands are so soft. His cues imperceptible and Nadine's exquisite movement just plain captivating. I could watch dressage all day and never be bored. It is the ultimate bond between horse and man. Just lovely!
