That was my take too. They can't be posed or really played with. They very clearly stated that 75% of the original trilogy's money was made off of licensing. Through the mid-, late 1980s the original trilogy made on the order of $4billion. Only about $1.2billion was in ticket sales. The rest was in toys, T-shirts, games, soundtracks, etc. Marvel was one of the beneficiary licensees. The sales of the original Star Wars comics really helped that company out in a rough times in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Even if the films did well, clearly they over-produce with every minor character. Manufacture the protagonists. The thing that gets me about these toys is the PRICE. A lot of them feel like they're too expensive for their quality and when you consider how many toys are fighting for attention in the aisels and what parents have to pick and choose, I can see where the whole argument over 'video games sell better' is coming from because you CAN get more play from a 50 dollar game than you will from a 40 dollar toy of stuff that a lot of kids aren't interested in. It may sound like 'video games killed the toy' but take into consideration that physical toys and games have been together since the 80s yet there were still so many popular line of toys that worked and made millions alongside games so what happened? This isn't something that just came into existence. The answer just comes to do kids really care about the shows and movies that these toys are spawned from and the answer is clearly NO. Kids don't fucking care and at the same time, it feels like Disney is more akin to the teen-adult collector market to pick up the tab as they remembered how the collector market rose up from the original Kenner Star War toys. The big thing about that was that NO ONE expected the value of those figures to rise the way they did and that goes for a lot of toys. No one expected them to be so valuable down the line given that kids rough house with toys that anything that survives that is a miracle. I have always said that Disney is trying to artificially create a 'collector market' with these toys and doing it in such disastrous ways. First, they flooded the market with these figures when that wasn't the case with toys that are infamous now. A lot of high valued collector toys were made in smaller batches which makes their value sky rocket because there are so few left in good condition. All Disney has done is create a world of pegwarmers that no one wants.

Toys like The Transformers or Skylanders sold excellently because they weren't that expensive, but you always wanted to own more of them because seeying the show/play the game either made you like the character/needed it for the game or you just liked the figure/thought their design was cool. Collectors enjoyed Transformers too because Hasbro realized there was a genuinely worth market for people who enjoyed collecting figures: they sold so well and for so long because Hasbro cared about making the franchise up to quality (for the most part at least). No company today seems to understand that consumers won't buy their stuff if it's not made with real interest or soul. These toys don't sell because there is no synergy between the movies and the toys anymore. Look at TMNT, the shelves are cleared 1 month before the movie even comes out. The normal see, buy, and play pattern is broken.

6:00 I think it's offensive to think kids shouldn't have quality toys, I think we did as kids because I had Star Wars Episode 1 toys as a kid. Made me not even mind getting a shot. I would've, even as a kid, been extremely disappointed seeing those ugly things. Kids can still prefer quality.
@CanaryGamesESC

Disneys main issue lately has been to not make quality but instead to cheap out on stuff and stay comfortably in mediocrity rather then try and make quality.
As a little boy what interested me about lots of movies and TV shows and their related toys was the tech. Star Wars had way cool ships, Stormtroopers, blasters, light sabers, etc. And same with Battle Star Galactica and even Buck Rogers. Not to mention Transformers and GI Joe. When I look at those clearance toys, they look all really bland and boring. There's nothing interesting about them. A cool toy or action figure makes you want to play with it even if you don't know anything about show it's from.
I wish Mattel would take the star wars license, they do great with the Jurassic line.

How many toys do kids actually buy though anymore at all anyways? I’d assume most kids are just glued to their phones and could care less about any action figure whatsoever…
It really is sad. I remeber when i was about 13 back in the 90s and shelfs in rows up on rows were filled with Star Wars, and was sold out as fast as they came. The glory days of toys and the joy it gave to enter a store filled with things you loved in movies were magical. Now they rott on the shelft as a testament how mistreated the franchises have been.
to explain: pop-it toys with the bubbles are fidget toys to start with. They are even more helpful if you happen to be on the Autism spectrum and frantically need a sensory normalization tool after a room of bright lights, loud people, and complex inputs leaves your head fuzzy and headspace cluttered with overload. the motion of popping the plastic bubbles back and forth in patterns is calming. It's also someone what useful for children, as they can have similar needs to fidget with things and practice motor skills. That's why "bubble wrap that's not bubble wrap" exists, WCBS.

Take into consideration that these toys are marketed towards kids but it shows that KIDS don't care or want these shitty characters, despite the people at Disney INSISTING that 'young Black and Brown kids will finally feel seen!' Black and Brown kids like cool shit just like White kids do and if you keep making the Black and Brown heroes lame as fuck, they won't buy them. Disney honestly thought that Black boys would buy up this BP merch second to the girls who had 'tough heroes' but the girls aren't having it either. The kids aren't asking for the toys, adult collectors don't give a shit and so they rot on the shelves.

You should take a look at the new Lara Croft toy. This version definitely isn't the Lara of the 90's. You can count on her clogging toy shelves right along with the toys in this video.
My mom taught me the addage that toys arent fun if you cant take them out of the package to appreciate them. Action figures were meant to be played with, the old ones could take a beating (I had my SW ones for well over 15 years), the new ones either look super cheap or they are designed to look appealing to collectors.

How long do places like 'Ollies' keep the unsellable toys on display, and what's their next stop after failing to sell at the discount stores? I'm guessing that they LITERALLY couldn't give the stuff away if they wanted to, and everything has to be disposed of so they toymakers can 'write off' the products on their taxes or whatever?
