The CRAZIEST HITTING STREAK in New York Mets HISTORY

In 1980, shortstop Frank Taveras was off to a terrible start, hitting barely above .200 over the season, and right around .150 over the last two weeks of work. And then, he got some unlikely help from, of all people, his wife, on how to improve and break out of his slump. And what followed was a hitting streak so absurd that it has to be seen to be believed... all because of a player's wife

Can I say that is a Heart warming Story? I almost wanted to cry hearing about it Could You do more videos about maybe how a wife help their husband or even how their husband helps their wife (like if she's playing in softball for an example even though this is technically a baseball channel) if you can find a story something like that that would love to hear it This video just had a way of warming my heart & I loved the story & it's nice just to hear some romantic stories verses about stories about drama all the time (it's just nice to have a simple break but I enjoy all your videos)

Two of the last three videos on JG7 have covered Ed Whitson and Frank Taveras. Both players were on the opening day roster of the 1979 World Series winning Pirates. However both players were traded away long before October. Taveras, like you said, was traded to the Mets in April for Tim Foli. Foli had a much better season for the Pirates than Taveras had for the Mets. In June, the Pirates traded Ed Whitson along with Fred Breining and Al Holland to the Giants for Bill Madlock and a pitcher named Dave Roberts (not the guy managing the Dodgers now). Madlock was allowed to play 3B again with the Pirates after the Giants had tried to make him a 2B. It allowed Phil Garner to play 2B again, which was his natural position, but benched Rennie Stennet who never really recovered from a broken leg in 1977.

"In the middle of the 1979 season, the Mets got Tavaras in a trade.." He was traded to the Mets on April 19th.. 11 games into the Pirates season and 9 games into the Mets season. Not the "middle" of the season.

Living at the other end of New York State, I became a Mets fan in 1979 because WOR was part of our cable package at the time. Being a fan at that time was rough, but a World Series championship in 1986 made things a lot better.

Small point to help you with future videos. WAR is not as simple as I’m about to make it out to be, but WAR does not compare one player to a league-average player, but a “replacement level” player. In other words, someone at the minor league level or a street free agent.

Taveras' wife is the real MVP! Thank goodness then-WOR (put an extra "W" in front of that call sign later in the '80s due to FCC regulations at the time) aired so many of the Mets' games back then so Taveras' wife had a big enough sample size to see what was wrong with his batting stance.

1 of 2 answers: footage is either hard as hell to find from the era (so sadly, this is about the best we'll get from games that weren't national broadcasts and preserved), or smaller chance, mlb is anal about vids from the era or something (remember, some of the nfl vids jg9 has done has had eras where he had to downgrade the video a ton because the nfl was okay with stuff from 2 weeks ago used, but not 20 years ago, because reasons).

@@mfm4205 It's the first one. Just the quality of the footage. Surprisingly, I haven't had too many issues with MLB footage getting blocked and copyright claimed (unless it's a recent game)

Frank Taveras might be better remembered for playing in 164 games in the 1979 MLB season, the 2nd most in MLB history(Only Maury Wills' 165 in the 1962 season tops Taveras' mark).

so number 1 without relying on tiebreaker games, then (since in 1962, dodgers and giants tied for first, played a best of 3 series to determine nl winner).

For comparison, Taveras' 1978 Pirates teammate was also on a new team in 1979. Mario Mendoza hit .198 for the Mariners posting the worst bWAR of his career, -1.7.

I love me some Mets history, but I believe the player shown at the 6:54 mark is Alex Trevino, not Frank Taveras (if that is number 29). The graphic from the original video of the game is wrong. Great video!

If you think about it, this makes sense. This was before everybody had access to video where they compare and contrast batting stances, you had to do everything from memory. The wife would be the only person on earth who was so obsessed with the husband that she would watch every at bat and notice that kind of detail, even if she wasn't an expert on the subject.

And since Tavaras played for the Mets during this streak.. and the Mets played at Shea Stadium... When are you going to do a video about the guy who was killed by a flying lawn mower while at the Jets-Patriots game on December 9, 1979? Or have you done one already and I somehow missed it?
