That dude wasnt trying to attack Maynard. Maynard acted like he was going to give him a hug as the dude was making the gesture with his arms up and then hip tossed him and took his back and choked him. Dude was an idiot for getting on stage but that was not someone defending themselves. I mean I dont blame him, maynard, but just almost seemed staged or somthing.

Speaking of stage crashers, do you remember when that guy ran onto the stage at a Stones concert, and Keith took his Tele off and clubbed the guy before he could get to Mick? And then Keith continued playing as if nothing had happened. Pure gold! 😆

I've been involved with the local metal, and music community more generally where I live (not as a musician, just a patron of the arts, so to speak as well as being occasional muscle for moving amps and other kit around) for over 18 years. One of the things I always loved about live music was the casual, close, intimate, participatory experience one used to get as a crowd member. Some of the first bands I saw in my local scene, WANTED people up on the stage with them, revelled in the chaos, loved it, loved getting close to the people enjoying the music. When Dimebag Darrel got shot, despite the fact that we aren't in America, despite the fact that the bands who were playing here didn't attract that level of psychotic stalker/killer, that shit ended. Its slowly, by degrees coming back, but not like it was. Everyone I know well, took his death about as well as most folks would take a dose of anthrax. That is only a slight exaggeration. It robbed everyone of spark. See, metalheads by and large, although considered by many outsiders as folk with darkness in their hearts, are actually usually bright and cheery folk, enthusiastic, energetic and realistically positive people. But the sun went out for us, the world stopped turning, and nothing was right or good in the world for a long, long, LONG time. I still get nervous when I see bands invite people up on stage at gigs now, where they even can. Its not permitted at many places now. Dime was a strong source of light, the photon fast fingers and picking, the majestic sounds he made... The hole he left behind in music when that bastard shot him is too deep, too wide to ever be even close to filled again. Fucking tragedy.

Not as well known is the Frank Zappa incident. Some guy thought Zappa was looking at his girlfriend during the concert and so got up on stage and threw him 15 feet down onto the concrete floor of the orchestra pit. Broke both his legs, spine, skull, and crushed his throat. Zappa pointed out that when you're on stage with lights shining at you, and the auditorium is in darkness, a) you can't see any particular girl, and b) you can't see anyone climbing on stage and so don't know you've been attacked until you wake up the next day and the doctors tell you. People complained when Taylor Swift freaked out over Kanye West getting onstage during the MTV awards, but as she said, all she could see was a silhouette of someone coming toward her that wasn't supposed to be coming toward her.

@@surfdigby not the same thing at all, but the zappa incident reminds me of a story about his pal, the great captain beefheart. He was playing a concert somewhere, on stage, and presumably he was tripping on something, because he said that he looked into the crowd and saw a woman's face morph into something resembling a fish, I believe. (Possibly the inspiration behind the grotesque creature on the front of the trout mask replica album?). So the captain straightened his tie, and walked straight off the stage, I believe it was a similar hight to the zappa fall - said to be around 15 feet or so. He survived, of course, but I believe he took months to recover and had lasting issues, again much like Frank. Apparently ry cooder, who was in the captains magic band at this point, watched the incident unfold and took it as the last straw and subsequently left the band. Crazy antics, but back the rock and roll really was wild. A lot more fun, but I'm not advocating anything quite so life endangering as those two examples. They were both lucky to survive, and Frank's singing voice was never the same. Though zappa was always more of a band leader, composer, guitarist etc, than he was a singer, he still had a voice that went very well with his style of music, when he was on vocal duty.

When Dime was killed, I lost all sympathy for anyone trying to do this. You just don't know what someone's intentions are and you can't take the chance. The world of rock performance changed that day. He was a lovely, kind, decent, genuine man who was executed at point blank range by a disgruntled "fan." My heart aches for Dime to this day and for all the people who were collateral damage of this one misguided assholes actions. 😭😔

I saw Pantera in 99 open for Black Sabbath. I still am in disbelief over what happened to Dime. He'll be forever missed along with his brother Vinnie. They'll live on forever through their music.

Dear Justin, I am beginning to believe that you are a clairvoyant.

I stage dived at a school's band performance in the local community centre in my youth (while pished on cheap wine). There were about 8 people in the audience, and I leaped majestically right over their heads, landed on my face and broke my nose on the parquet floor. There was blood everywhere.

Justin, your good natured humor & empathy is what the world needs. Thank you!

The Robert Plant one was upsetting, but your observational witticisms are a much- needed, chuckle-inducing balm.

As a singer, the Noel G clip has always given me the cold sweats!! It’s the most unexpected and frightening way to be attacked onstage because, unless you stand with your back to the crowd the whole show, there’s nothing you can do to see it coming!

Justin, Jason here from West Yorkshire, UK. I have spent the past 2 days a bit down hearted about the very sad loss of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins (a band of which I've been a fan of for 23 years, and I've felt quite sad today about it, it hit me a little bit today). I just want to say thank you for injecting a little bit of humor, and giving me a little smile with some of these absurd stage take downs. (Taylor would have laughed, no doubt). Even with your live stream the other day, as I know you guys, Rufus especially, must have had feelings about it, you still put a smile on my face and helped me forget such a tragedy for a minute. Thank you for starting your channel, it is an escape for me from some aspects of life, and I enjoy hearing your views on life and music. Thanks man. :-)

As a fellow concert spectator, I can assure you that it's obvious the stage is off limits. I also manage not to go back stage unless I have a pass or was invited. Then I remained on the correct side of venders and concessions. Even while heavily intoxicated.

The best one of these I've ever seen was filmed at a Tool concert. Some idiot came on stage right in the middle of a verse. Maynard James Keenan gave the guy a hip throw and put him in some kind of Jujitsu hold...WHILE SINGING...and held him there for like 3 minutes before security came and took the guy away. The best part was that Maynard never missed a word.

Yeah, MJK and Keef lamping the dude with his tele are two of the more triumphant examples of artists dealing with this sort of thing.

This has been recorded happening at least in the 1800s. Classical music concerts were wild.

Coincidentally, I met an actual rocket scientist at a Darkness gig. Turns out we were practically neighbors. It’s not that rare when you live near Caltech and the JPL. I know others. Maybe we should all go to more Darkness gigs, so you can say Darkness fans are rocket scientists. Now that I think about it, I know some surgeons, too. I’m sure at least one of them has got to be a brain surgeon.

Even at hardcore shows with no barriers, I hate anyone that gets up and doesn't stage dive immediately... anyone overstaying their welcome infuriates me

As a former security guard, I had a gig guarding the dressing room of a band at an outdoor venue. Sounds easy, but those women were vicious. LOL. Love your content!

1:42 OMG! That's got to be downright scary for the performers (as well as disruptive for people who want to see the band perform). I suppose the worst case scenario would be having someone like the guy who shot Christina Grimmie managing to get onto the stage.

Being on stage is the most vulnerable spot to be. Anyone can get to you, drunk crazy people, angry ex girlfriends or boyfriends, or just a random nutjob. I love playing live but I do get a little anxious when someone starts to approach the stage especially after the whole Dimebag incident. Bottom line is that the stage is for performers and staff only.

Me too, I just play local bars ..some pretty rough as well, with all the metheads and nut cases these days , everyone packing a knife or gun as well, all it takes is some nut job thinking your eyeing his girlfriend or something stupid like that , I'm always scanning the room ...starting to take the fun outa it to tell ya the truth

@@dadnelson4008 you have to constantly be watching what's going on in the room (bar), which takes away from the fun, not to mention your performance. We had a fight break out in front of us Friday night (just past), and you automatically stop playing and go into self and equipment defense mode. Guitars, amps, PA's, and drums aren't fucking cheap. I just don't understand what some people call a "good time"?

This happened at a System of a Down gig, as you can see on KZread. The band is making a sound like burning dust, someone jumps up and starts wrestling with one of the band, and the "song" - the sound of burning dust - continues unabated!

This made me think of a totally different flavor of stage crashing when Jarvis Cocker crashed Michael Jackson's performance at the 1996 Brit Awards and got arrested. I wasn't aware of the whole incident until relatively recently--I assume it's much more general knowledge in the UK? What a weird whirlwind of events that was.

The best one I’ve ever seen is Keith Richards catching a stage jumper with a guitar swung like a baseball bat during gimme shelter. Keith batting 1000.

I guess it doesn't involve security guards, but Keith Richards lamping a stage crasher with his guitar is well worth a look as an alternate approach to security..

I remember Robyn Hitchcock pointing at the edge of the stage and saying "this side is my side, that side is your side" to a would be stage invader. There was no further attempt made.

In ‘79, in Pittsburgh, Yes were performing “in the round” and, during “Awaken,” a 6’ 4” hillbilly dude in blue overalls walked up on the stage and grabbed Jon Anderson from behind and would not let go. The lights came up and people swarmed the stage. People were popping out of the floor. This went on for several minutes until we saw a Billy club go up and come down on the hillbilly’s head and they dragged him off. Rick Wakeman put his arm around Jon and then the lights went back down and they finished the song, after which Jon chirped “It’s great to be back in Pittsburgh!”

Ive been lucky enough to play at Nottingham Rock City a few times, you sir are correct!!! i even ate all of our bands laid on meals once, they'd all gone for fish a chips so weren't hungry, then i saw the guy who cooked for us, ate the lot, didn't want to upset him.

Rock City is the best venue in the UK imo. Or at least, in England. Many great nights spent there.

I witness a seated audience get up rush to stage. 0 security. 2ft tall stage. Amazingly NO ONE jumped on or touched a single thing (although my arm was being pushed up in front of a stage monitor) Crazy stuff. Much love to you Mr. Hawkins!

The most awesome musician reaction to a stage crasher.... Maynard James Keenan. Went full bjj on the guy, threw him to the ground, took his back and held him in a near choke for the rest of the song.

Funny you mention Rock City- in 2017 I was in Rescue Rooms seeing Thy Art Is Murder. Neck Deep were playing in Rock City next door- turned out that they'd walked off stage as they'd had a fight with security. There's footage of it on KZread. Some 'quality' security at Rock City!

I am guilty of jumping on stage at a VAN HALEN concert in 1986 at the Worcester Massachusetts Centrum. I however was not trying to tackle anyone or cause any problems with their performance. I was very calm and not rushing. I was able to get a hug from Sammy hagar and a high five from Micheal Anthony before I was removed from the concert by security. I'll never forget the experience as long as I live. It was non violent and awesome. The only thing that sucked was I didn't get to see the rest of the concert. To answer Justin's question why I went on stage is I wanted to feel a one time connection with my favorite band.

I think it's been worse since it became more common to put a barrier up between crowd and stage with a "no man's land" in between. It's seen as an inviting challenge to get up on stage. Plus it killed off stage diving to an extent. Every gig I ever went to in the 80s and 90s had diving but no one got in the faces of any of the bands.

Personally when I go to see a band I want to watch their performance, the last thing I want to see is the performance interrupted and spoilt, here's to security doing their job. Great channel, great content, thank you Justin. 👍👍👍👊✌️.

These tackles straight off of the stage are insanely dangerous. You land wrong from a 5 foot drop and you could be a quadriplegic or dead. Props to security for putting their bodies on the line for something that's supposed to be a fun event.

Justin, I would really like for you to get the 'Like Subscribe and tick the bell' pointing the correct way round so that it corresponds with what we see on the screen. I believe in you. You can do this.

I used to do some ShowSec work. Depending on the band you could either have the easiest shift of all time or spend the entire night throwing pissheads back over the barrier. It was a laugh though.

It shows what happens to children when they get neglected. They become an adult and feel compelled to get the attention they missed out on in their childhood.

What's going to end up happening is that some stagecrasher will get tackled and end up with a life changing head or spinal injury from landing on a monitor or taking a tumble off the stage, there'll be a huge lawsuit, and then there'll be "measures to prevent this sort of thing", and it'll be one more thing that stops concerts being as enjoyable as they used to be for the rest of us.

The singer of Lamb of God was in jail for a while because he pushed someone off stage they hit their head and died. He had a trial and it was deemed he wasn't responsible.

@@soulcrusher807 I wasn't aware of that, however even though he was found to not be responsible, I'll bet his insurers, promoters, tour manager, etc have all made changes based on this. It's probably affected him personally too.

Amazingly prescient video! Shame it didn’t come out today really.

I mainly go to hardcore shows in more intimate venues where audience members getting on stage is generally encouraged, but it’s a very different thing once you get like 5-10k people together. I’d love to see you react to some footage of hardcore bands playing like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Foxy Shazam, Every Time I Die, The Chariot, etc. That chaotic shit 😏

Back in the early ‘90s we used to stage dive, but it was never about ‘being onstage’ or mugging the musicians. Security never bothered us about it. I was pretty skinny at the time, so one night at an Alice Donut show the crowd kept putting me back onstage despite my best efforts to get back down, and the singer took to shoving me back off the stage. I think after the second time he shoved me offstage I finally was able to plant my feet on the floor & enjoy the show. Not once would it have ever occurred to me to bother the band. It was just part of that time. These guys jumping up AT the band are chowderheads. Stage diving ended when Kurt Cobain died - probably a little bit before that.

I have seen many people entering football pitches while attending matches but I haven’t seen this kind of geniuses at concerts yet. This reassures me about the kind of crowd I have been surrounded by and this video made me laugh 😅

I saw Metallica in Melbourne in the early 90’s. Kyuss were supporting. The lead singer dived into the crowd and security wouldn’t let him back on stage thinking he was a mere punter. Everyone stopped playing, hilarity ensued.

Totally makes me think of Abbie Hoffman at Woodstock (?) during The Whos set to rant about some yippie hippie shit. Pete Townshend? “Get the fuck off my stage”. That sums it up brilliantly.

You could have included my favourite - the keef episode with the guitar smash.

I wish you had used the Maynard James Keenan hip toss take down of a stage crasher. Brilliant move and he just held the guy down face planted to the stage for the entire song. Btw I didn't see any of your stage crashers. What is your history with them? Once again a great show my friend. P.s. I have been trying to find used and new records of The Darkness with little to no luck. Was your distribution mostly overseas?

The best observation you missed about the slash one was that he continued to play and finished the solo! There’s another angle and it’s brilliantly recovered and the security guard proper tackled him! No sympathy for these idiots

Not quite a stage crash but Ian MacKaye probably pushed me back into the fray at a ground level Fugazi show in the late 80’s. One of the best, funnest shows in my show history. It was a small, small venue. Good times!

@@GIBKEL I'm sure. I never got to see them live but they were regarded as a top notch local band here in the Baltimore/ Washington area. Same with Bad Brains

@@ryanedwards4512 I think they still tour occasionally. It was the only time I got to see them and it was on the ‘Repeater’ tour so it must have been 90’. A long time ago but I will never forget. It was loud, rowdy…but in a communal way where there were no hard feelings and no low blows in the mosh. The only other band that sounded that good and that loud was 11th Day Dream at the Double Door in Chicago in 96-97’. They ripped! So much fun. I hope you get to see Fugazi some day. I’m not a big concert goer as I’ve always lived in the rural world of Mt. but for brief periods. I got to see Jeff Tweedy play acoustic shows at his wife’s bar in downtown Chicago. We did fly out to see Radiohead in Seattle for the Moon Shaped Pool Tour and the sonics were outstanding. Makes me wish I got to see more of my favorites. On horrible immune suppressant drugs now for MS so my future of Covid and big crowds is probably over. What a drag it is to get sick!

@@GIBKEL I would love to see Radio Head live. The best show I've been to was Beastie Boys in Glen Burnie Maryland. Porno for Pyros would be second. I hope you get better. I'm thinking about seeing Tool next February I hear great things. In the late 80's and early 90's Baltimore and Washington DC had a lot of great venues that popular rock and punk would play Network,930 club, Hammer Jacks,and Michaels 8th Ave.

Black Label Society. Guy get on stage while Zakk is doing his piano only rendition of "In This River". For those that don't knowbit was his tribute to Dime. Needless to say, security were not gentle with him.

When you had beer thrown on you during a song you handled that ass and the situation with class! That could be considered a form of assault

Why would anyone want to get kicked out of an awesome show and possibly arrested instead of experiencing some amazing music live

Last vid I watched of your was someone through something or was fighting, and you stopped the music and refused to play until it was resolved. So I bet you are an expert on this subject

People used to stage crash all the time in the 60s and 70s.. I think that's something that should probably stay in the past.. too dangerous.
