I was going through a really hard time, my mother died suddenly and my friends came to town to support me. One the second night one of them wanted to put on something on the TV that was soothing and knew I liked anime. I hadn't even heard of Yuri on Ice but when the music started I sat up straight and for the first time in days since mom died I didn't feel miserable. I feel into the show because there were 6 episodes available, it allowed me to escape the grief for a few hours. I will always hold a very dear place in my heart for the YOI theme song, it's always a sweet happy feeling when I hear it, everything in my life just lifts.

Something I really enjoyed throughout this reaction series is Danny's enthusiasm for the romance. Not just because it is a queer romance but because it's a romance and self-discovery story that is known throughout the internet as something mostly women are excited about, but Danny spent hours watching these characters and though it's not a shounen show or even a high-stakes "sports" show he was enthusiastic and cheered on the romance, was INVESTED in it. I don't know many male content creators that are so hyped about romance anime, let alone BL ones. It's not unnoticed and it's incredibly appreciated.

Okay, let’s put things in perspective. The reason why the kisses in the show are censored is because the creators wanted to keep that Sport anime genre rank. If they had shown the kissing, then it would’ve also been marked as “Shounen ai” which would also make it be marked in Japan as not for kids. They wanted to “Make History” by attempting to do the unexpected and the censored kiss left people stunned upon release. That’s not to say it didn’t anger some people but it still worked in their favor. Oh and this includes them fanning the flames with the creative censorship of the bath scenes too. As a bit extra, around the time they were planning season two the creators had supposedly dropped info that season two was going to feature the Olympics… however, Russia was banned from the Olympic Games right around that same time due to the investigation and discovery of doping programs. Victor is Russian obviously, and if any athlete from Russia wanted to compete in the Olympics they were not to be allowed to represent their Country’s Flag on them and instead go in as independent. Russia made their own version of the Olympic Games after that from what I had been informed. So that’s probably at least one reason season two never really came about. Just someone passing along info that wasn’t asked for, love the videos my guy👍 Oh yeah, about the butts… the creators hired someone specifically because of his talent in drawing ass. Every ass shot was done by that person lol

27:26 If you think about dance vs. gymnastics and how the extreme physical activity stunts your growth, what Yuri is saying makes sense. He hasn't had a major growth spurt yet and because of the levels of activity he's maintaining, and probably won't have one for another year. It's gonna fuck up his center of gravity and he won't be nearly as flexible so jumps will be dangerous until his growth spurt stops.

This show was historic when it came out, especially for an anime that wasn't based on an existing manga. Its insane success is the reason why Mappa had the opportunity to start adapting the big shonens and become the household name they are today. It's all thanks to Yuri on ice even if people forget it. The thing that is so special is that it's realistic. Nothing that happens in this series is impossible in real figure staking, maybe highly uniteli but not impossible. The creators spent years researching for this show and it really portraits the sport SO well. Not only the correct jumps and competitions, but the overall trends and common occurencies in skating. Obviously Russia and Japan are the main players in skating also in real life (with the US), but there is so much more. For example the fact that Yuri does a quad flip, the same jump Victor always does, is telling because there are almost no skaters who do that quad. No skating routine shown in the series felt impossible and the way they change jumps mid performance is VERY realistic. There are some details that also show the dark aspects of skating. Yurio talking about growing up and not being able to jump anyone is a very serious problem in skating because you have these 15/16 year old kids winning everything and then retire as soon as their body changes. Or the way that Victor feels old at 27 and doesn't know what to do with his life anymore because competing after that age is dangerous. They even show how rigging happens in skating, with the way Yuri's last Eros program was underscored and how JJ got third even after all the mistakes while Otabek got fourth even if he skated clean. Stronger federations have more power and their skaters have an advantage even when they mess up. And obviously how they handles the romance and everything. They didn't classify the anime as a Bl, just as a sport anime which usually came with a lot of queerbaiting, so fans weren't expecting an actual kiss. They danced around what to show and not to show, probably because they had no idea how people would react to it, but overall the romance is present and it's not queerbaiting. The kiss broke the internet and no one was expecting it and no anime since then was able to recreate that. It was my first anime and I fell in love with it and will always have a special place in my heart. It's insane how much they could do with just 12 episodes, no existing manga and a studio that at the time was almost unknown. Nobody was expecting that level of success and its sales were CRAZY. It was in the top10 highest grossing franchisings in Japan in 2017, all franchisings not just anime. And fun fact: the Russian skater who won silver at the Olympics in 2018 in the ladies field was a huge fan of Yuri on ice and had the same tissue box with the dog. When she retired she gave the tissue box to a younger Russian skater who went on to win the silver medal at the 2022 Olympics. We can say the tissue box brings the Yuri's curse of the second place 😂 And lastly, one of the pairs did skate to the theme Yuri on ice during the 2018 Olympics and they arrived like in 8th place. The guy of the pair switched partners in the following years and he is now the reigning world champion in pairs. Truly legendary

The series was supposed to have a follow up with a movie about Victor's past and probably a second season, but stuff got complicated. Mappa had a boom after Yuri on ice and started taking on way too many big projects and their animators were always too busy with the shonens. Then the pandemic arrived and hit them like a truck. The last news about the movie were from the end of 2020 when they said it was still in developement, but they took on even more projects after that, so I don't think it will ever escape the limbo. Not to mention how right now making a movie set in Russia is a BAD idea. Not only for the war, but because the Russian skaters were accused of doping in the 2022 Olympics and have spent 1 season and an half banned from the sport. Not to mention how they are payed by the government. So yeah, terrible time. Recently the CEO of Mappa also said that while the series was such a huge success and it started Mappa's rise to stardom, the studio at the time was so broke that the project had to be financed basically entirely by other people and those people got the majority of the money and still hold their rights to get the same % of the sequels. So even if a sequel/movie is super successful, Mappa would still not make that much money compared to what they make now that they have better barganing power with the inventors. It's tragic because Yuri on ice gave them the chance to become bigger and they did have plans for it, but it probably will never see the light of day. They should just sell the rights to some other studio so they can keep going, but I don't think Mappa will do that. It's just weird seeing a studio being known for the big shonens while their roots were in a gay sport anime no one would have bet anything on. It's sad tbh, but it was good when it lasted. The character designer for JJK S2 is the same that worked on Yuri on ice and I can see and can't help getting emotional. The positive thing is that this year FINALLY we had Yukuru Hanyu, the greatest and most famous skater who ever lived, who skated to History Maker in a show. It was glorious and something we as fans dreamed of for years because the song seems made for him. And still, even after all the hardships at Mappa, Yuri on ice still made history and nothing will ever change that

Okie adult figure skater and Yuri on ice fan here with some info: At 5:47 when you thought Viktor did the same jumps, they are actually different! The difference between a Lutz and a Flip is the edge it takes off of. Yes, they both use the toe pick of the right foot to push into the air (the foot that stretches back), but on a Lutz, the other foot takes off of an outside edge vs. the Flip where the takeoff is an inside edge. Very subtle difference. Also, both the lutz and flip toe off the same foot that lands. Then the toe loop after, looks similar, but is different in that it toes off one foot and lands on the other. At 30:02, the spread eagle is the part right before he takes off into the axel where his feet are pointed in opposite directions. Like second position in ballet if you know. It's not super easy to tell because of the angle they use in animation, but spread eagles are wide stances, about double shoulder width (to address what was said at 38:28) 33:06 There is a bit of "dance" in figure skating. Of course, less than in ice dancing, but there is dancing! Other than jumps and spins, skaters are required to include footwork sequences and choreography sections in their programs. Depending on the skater, they may choose to make those sections more artistic and dance-like. 38:00 Yes! Skaters will typically do the same two programs (1 short program and 1 free skate) for an entire season. They may change small things throughout like was mentioned in the show (ie. doing a triple instead of a quad), but it's the same program each competition. 47:15 So the stuffed animals. After a skater is done, people throw stuff on the ice (stuffed animals, flowers, etc). Then people, kids typically, skate out and collect all the stuff thrown on the ice before the next skater. Some skaters will pick one or two up if they're close enough when they are thrown and so they'll be holding them at the kiss and cry (the place where they wait for their scores). 49:59 So falling isn't the worst thing that can happen in a program. Each jump has a base value of points (for instance, the quad flip he was trying for is 11 points) and points can be added or subtracted based on execution. A fall is only a 1 point deduction. If at the point of impact with the ice (the landing, not the fall), he has made a full four rotations in the air, he may only lose that 1 point. 1:01:40 So this is wild of him ngl. For context, the free skate, done on the second day of competition, is longer than the short program by almost double. The free skate is 4 minutes 30 seconds max so there is of course the issue of stamina. Skating so hard for so long, you're bound to get tired, so jumps done in the second half are awarded more points than those done in the first half. Pushing most of your jumps to the second half will increase your score, but it's difficult.

The stuffed animals, even the dog tissue box, are all gifts thrown onto the ice by fans after the ice skater finishes their program. Usually famous skaters have a theme for gifts that the fans like to give. The gifts are all gathered up and you can see them in a few scenes on the bench next to the skaters and coaches when the scores are being read off. Ice skaters may choose their favorite plushy or flowers that the fans gave to them to hug while the scores are being announced. The fans all know about Victor's dog so they give him stuff that is themed after his dog. Yuri is a big fan of Victor, and that is why he had a dog just like Victor's. Most of the skaters like or admire Yuri. You can tell by the way they talk about him, or act when they know that he is there. I know that he was also training with some of them too, and they would often see each other during competitions. They often talk online and show up in pictures together. The fact that there are a few skaters that look up to Yuri, and the fact that he was able to be apart of so many skating competitions, shows that he is not as bad of a skater as they make him out to be in the beginning. There are some skaters that can skate like the cut scene, but that kind of skating is not really for competitions.

The reason why there hasn't been any major followups to Yuri on Ice is probably because MAPPA (the production company) is busy with their other projects like Chainsaw Man, the new Attack on Titan season, One Punch Man 3, Jujutsu Kaisen, Vinland Saga, and a bunch of other shows. And, Yuri on Ice being an anime original means that it requires a lot more work and commitment than adapting already existing manga series.

I really think the online fan interaction was what really made YOI such a huge hit. I remember when we had to wait a whole week between each episode and during that time there were so many theories, analyses, and memes that came out during that time. There were celebrities watching the show, and professional skaters doing the routines, it was all such an experience. I remember posts with theories about each new episode and when we got the "kiss" in episode 5 everyone was saying that the writers can't really be giving us everything that we want, if so they would be married in the next episode. And what do you know? They freaking exchanged rings in the 6th episode!

I love seeing the couple have wholesome moments but the rest of the series is so insane lol, I have a lot of gripes, but I'm someone who can't stand the majority of anime because of it's tropes n such so it's extremely notable for me. Anyway, it goes down in history.

This IP deserved so much better. It had a fantastic fandom, im 100% sure if more seasons or the movie was to be completely crowd funded it would exceed its goal within 48 hours. The wiritng, the characters, the music, the choreography, the romance for the sake of mutual love, is so top notch. There was pure LOVE (agape or eros) put into this series and the studio just dropped the ball so hard that it borderlines criminal. So many popular anime rely on battles and fan service but this? This is a masterclass on how to deliver a story be it by itself or a whole series

One of my favorite things is learning that they carefully animated each jump and skating technique based off actual skaters, even using Johhny Weir's ice slide in the bonus short. When you start watching you don't notice it, you think it all looks the same, but then you get into the show and staying really paying attention to these marvelous realistic details to really showcase the sport and each skater's individual style and strengths.

As a person who live in Russia i have to say that figure skating is a really big deal here. Our Figure skaters becoming to a country famous stars and you currently unable to get tickets to the show because the rinks are full. I personally have my Ice skating ideals. Evgenya Medvedeva for example. So we even have jokes that "To become The best ice skater in World is much easier that become the best ice skater in Russia"

One of the things that I find so interesting and compelling about the first couple episodes are the differences between the when yuuri knows people are watching, versus the way that he looks when he thinks he’s alone/ or with someone totally trustworthy. As someone who has struggled with weight issues, it’s like those issues have been perfectly characterized. You always feel at your highest weight to your self or imagine that everyone else does. He is characterized as extremely overweight in the train station and coming home, verse when he steps onto the ice with only Yuko watching him. Just an interpretation but that’s how I see the first couple of scenes in the first couple episodes.

32:52 It’s not TYPICAL, but there are times, basically certain shows and competitions where figure skaters are allowed to go all out with the dance routines. During the 90’s, there was a skater by the name of Scott Hamilton who was known for his dance routines and back flips. At one point, people were saying he had the fastest feet on ice (comparing him to Michael Flatley of Riverdance.). There also another figure skater by the name of Elvis Stojko, who did a LOT of rock and roll themed performances. Yes, he did Elvis Presley themed performances as well. ^^ The 90’s seemed to be a time where figure skaters were just letting loose and having a TON of fun. Did it tick the elitists off? You bet it did. But the skaters did nooooot give a damn. They were having FUN! 😂❤

yes exactly and the technical focus (aka just putting in endless jumps to get more points) rather than the actual artistry of combining the step sequences/dance moves with the jumps and spins is why many people kinda dislike the Olympics and stuff too. Because sure, you can do 20 jumps and get the highest score but to have a beautiful routine that incorporates those jumpes and works as a whole thing is a lot harder to do! That might also be the difference in your viewing experience from the Olympics vs. Minami (Beyblade boi) because Minami competed 'only' on national level.

1:26:00 with the censorign part: you're absolutly right. and that's the exact reason why we have never gotten a s2. YOI was supposed to be even gayer but it was censored to oblivion. they smuggled in that hidden kiss back in ep6 or sth but that was the reason we never got any more seasons. There was supposed to be a movie coming out instead but MAPPa has basically put that on infinite hiatus. it's hella frustrating knowing theyve basically canceled the whole show just bc the ppl who made yoi said fk it and gave in to the gay
